ARLINGTON, Va. — President Barack Obama is paying tribute to the determination of the U.S. military this Veterans Day, from those who served generations ago to today’s troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere around the world.

In a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Obama spoke directly to veterans and families of the fallen, saying there’s no tribute or praise that can match “the magnitude of your service and your sacrifice.”

Obama pledged to do right by all veterans and their families, saying: “America will not let you down.”

After his comments, the president and first lady Michelle Obama visited the section of the cemetery where fallen troops from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are buried. The Obamas surprised family members there and spent some time talking to them.

Earlier, Obama placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Obama’s first Veterans Day as president comes as he nears a decision on a revamped war strategy in Afghanistan. It’s expected to include sending thousands more troops into the war zone.
