I have to comment… being skinny or fat has NOTHING to do w/ your health.. it’s if you eat well and take care of yourself… God has a number for all of us and being skinny or fat doesn’t matter trust me… My great grandmother died a big woman, but she died over her 90′s… a skinny person can have all the medical problems a big person has… my aunt wasn’t overweight when she was diagnosed w/ diabetes or high blood pressure… you can eat ANYTHING you want as long as it’s in moderation, and the more times u eat during the day you’ll actually see results of weight loss… I lost 10 lbs eating regular foods 6 times a day… no exercise whatsoever… I don’t think her comment was serious it was a I’m just saying moments… She knows what she has to do and THANK GOD she is still alive and not dead to another pointless death… there is no sure fire way anyone of us prolonging our death… you guys sound a lil silly… God already has your num… #ijs didn’t we lose a great singer and he was on the treadmill when he died??? You’re right people can be big and still healthy, but the chances of that are “slim”. However, I think people lose weight for the “quality” of life they’d like to live. I should know I’m in that process now.
Quality…i mean getting out and being active, keeping up with your girlfriends at the mall without stopping or searching for benches to rest on…amusement parks and being able to enjoy the rides not just the vendors. Now, God is ultimately in charge of our time on earth…but i think we contribute to shortening that time with our bad choices both physically and spiritually

We weren’t meant to be that way. And I beg to differ with you….All of my mom’s 9 brothers and sisters are still living well into their 70s and 80s.

I find it funny that people are saying if she had been skinny the bullet would have gone past her. Skinny or fat, a stray bullet is a stray bullet. If she had been skinny and IN THE PATH OF THE BULLET, she STILL would’ve gotten hit. Furthermore, I don’t think many people realize that the reason there is such a high number of obesity in the black, latin and native american communities is because most of these groups live in poorer areas where it is harder to come by more healthful food–and I am not just talking about fast food. If you go into a grocery store, most inexpensive foods are pre-packaged or “quick” fix food such as Hamburger Helper, Macaroni and CHeese, etc….these foods are loaded with sugar, sodium, fat, and are dense in complex carbohydrates. However, they are cheaper, so they can be bought in abundance which meets the needs of a family of five. Also, these foods are more attractive for a parent who works and is short on time versus a meal that is carefully prepared.

Also, have you checked out the price of FRESH vegetables?? Especially the organic kind? They are expensive as hell–and the cost rises when they have to be imported from other countries or when crops are damaged by weather.

Don’t get me wrong–I agree with you Califemme that people need to get in shape and eat more healthful foods. I also realize that there are people who are just not motivated to change, but old habits really do DIE HARD.

Also, as I mentioned, I used to be overweight, and had the damndest time getting it off. When I finally discovered why I was not successful all these years, my doctor made mapped out a strategy for me that was based on my problem and it worked. It was very hard at first because there were some foods that I had to ban from my house (french bread being one of them). But after some time, it worked–along with medical treatment for the underlying problem. I have kept the weight off for over seven years.

I think that people can be very cruel toward others when it comes to weight. It’s like obesity is that last target of discrimmination that is allowable because it transcends race and class and demeaning fat people is therefore acceptable. It’s not. Try putting yourselves in those people’s shoes.

Azrael3, When I say ‘I go harder on them’ that doesnt mean that I am condescending, rude or disrespectful toward them. Let me give you a tiny bit of my history if you will…I am from the south, born and raised so you KNOW I’m all aware of the horrible eating habits of our black people being is that the south is the modern ‘foundation’ for A LOT of eating habits. I don’t so much go hard on anyone for being overweight, I go hard for the lack of ambition or drive to change it. I am a VERY thorough person when it comes to anything I set mind to. I weigh 180lbs at 5ft9 inches height and I have to GO HARD to stay as such.
My thought process is if you REALLY want to do it you will and NOTHING should be an excuse. Glands, DNA, thyroids..That’s BS to me. Don’t get me wrong, I know genetics can play a part, but not in obesity because no one is born obese, it is cultivated so forgive me if im not extremely sympathetic.
Yes it is harder to come by organic/healthy food in ‘poorer’ areas, BUT again, thats no excuse because I dont live in the suburbs. It is EASY for me to step into ANY grocery store and NOT buy cooking oil, sugars, cookies, red meats or pork. ( I dont eat any of the mentioned). The average person doesnt know that JUST stopping the consumption of fried food, red meat, and soda without, I repeat WITHOUT exercise will automatically drop weight. I know fresh is always higher in price but is buying a combo meal from a fast food spot anywhere from $4.99-6.99, or a box of something from 2.99 up to double digits numbers anymore costly? Especiallly when health and finances play a part.

I agree with you though, each and every person is different and needs a plan mapped out especially for them. As I stated before, I’m hard on those who are overweight, i’m hard on those with no motivation. No one needs a pat on the back or ‘push’ to loose weight…I mean one’s heart pumping slower than normal should be motivational enough.

Elaborating on what I said; I’m not against losing weight. I have lost almost 100 pds after switching to a vegetarian diet(was once 275 pds, now i’m about 185 pds) This was something i did because I love animals and don’t feel comfortable using my money to support their slaughter. I don’t care what others are eating because what you spend your dollars on is your business. So I find it hilarious that meat eaters will jump on hardcore vegs saying they have the right to eat what they want and then turn to a fat person and tell them they need to put down the donuts. I have had people I care about pass away suddenly. One of my best friends in high school (a track star and VERY healthy) fell out and died during track practice at the age of 15. Her COD was never determined. My cousin in law, a 24 year old Marine, died suddenly of a heart attack. My now best friend was thrown from her car through the windshield onto a freeway and was almost hit by several oncoming cars. She broke every bone in her legs and feet and only through God’s grace did she survive and walk again. I have been robbed at gunpoint, my life threatened in my ear.

Now I said all that to say this: When the Lord comes calling for me I’ll be damned if I’m going with a belly full of bean sprouts! I wanna die of a weed/cheeto/cookie dough overdose because LIFE IS TOO SHORT FOR RICE CAKES. If diabetes doesn’t kill you something else will. Genetics and medical problems can play a HUGE part in weight. That is what happened to me; it was very hard for me to lose weight…my body would not continue dropping until I got tested for endocrinological problems and other issues. Once I was properly diagnosed, my doctor told me what foods were likely to keep the weight on or make me gain. I had to adjust accordingly–and this was in my mid- to late-20′s…The same thing happened with my niece; she got diagnosed with the same condition (not sure if this is hereditary) and she had to make changes.

I guess because I had to deal with weight due to a medical condition, I really try not to pass judgement on anyone who is overweight. HOWEVER, I agree that people should take responsibility.

Carolinagirl: you are correct that there are rich/middl-class people who are obese. However, studies have shown that obesity is more of a problem within poorer communities. THAT SAID, the American diet as a whole is horrible, as is our overall lifestyle. Even other countries that never had this problem before are now facing it with the introduction of American food. Also, there is less walking, more time sitting at the office desk, etc. It’s not just european countries either–there was a report done years ago on how certain segments of China, Japan, etc., were experiencing a fattening of their people because of the change in their lifestyle.

Also, have you noticed that the most fattening foods can be eaten with your fingers–convenient for when you are driving (and I have found that if I am eating while tasking, my brain is not registering that I am eating, so I don’t feel full)? Also notice that there are more liquor and fast food places per sq. mile in lower/working class areas than in upper/middle class areas? At least, this is true in Michigan, which happens to be one of the fattest states in the country. There is something to this…

If you think that-being overweight or obese-is not born into a family where everyone is overweight-you need to try that one again. Because-noone is wanting to be overweight-its more things that come with being overweight and obese. And it do run in your family. Stress is the number 1 cause of weight problem…not food alone. When someone is stressed out what do they do? They turn to drugs,drinking,smoking,and food. Nomatter how healthy you think you are eating don’t mean you are eating the right foods. If you don’t grow your own food-your not eating healthy. And some of the south might go under your terms but,not in the part im from. We grow our own food and thats something the south is known for as well as the north. Some of the Carolina people still grow their own food…have their own chickens,cows and pigs inwhich they kill too eat and catch their own fresh water fish. Alot of food has so many thing put into them to make them grow fast and that also make the weight differents as well as other things. Its not the food you eat alone its what the FDA/government put in the food to make it grow. And some people blame the south for bad food habits-when up north in New York and places like that-got all that grease in their food and bad eating habits as well. I can put money on it that-where ever you eat in the CAROLINA both North and South you got a choice of all different types of food to pick from. What get me is that some people say that-its the south and in poor areas that have the most overweight and obese people and thats NOT true. Look around at the rich people and how so many of them are overweight and obese…and their weight go up and down. They eat right-so whats the problem? STRESS-thats the problem. Ask your doctor which one hurt you the most food or stress and if he is a good doctor who know his work-he will tell you stress. Once again no disrespect-just my respond back to you.

It’s the same thing with the liquor stores around Detroit; on every corner there is one…there is no escaping it. My second point is something that has been researched not only by the government, but also by the Journal of the National Medical Association and other groups. I don’t think that any of these organizations are “blaming” poor blacks for their obesity; they are simply trying to understand it because it is directly related to high mortality rates amongst blacks (as well as Latinos and Native Americans) and any change in behavior to stop this is a good change, in my opinion.

What you wrote was well put. I used to be extremely overweight years ago (I wrote about this in other posts, so I won’t go into the details). It was very hard, but I worked to lose the weight. I regained a bit of it because of the very issue that helped caused the weight gain, but I refuse to give up on myself and be complacent. I WORKED TOO HARD TO LOSE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE! LOL.

You are right about trying; that is the key issue. When people do not try or give up, that is the saddest thing.

That is exactly what I’m saying. Whether you’re fat, skinny, black, white healthy or diseased doesn’t matter. My great grandfather was given 2 years to live (stomach cancer) almost 20 years BEFORE I WAS BORN. He died when I was 17. Why? Because 2 years from the day he was diagnosed was simply not the day God picked for him. Health is (not COMPLETELY, but relatively) irrelevant. When you were born God picked a day for you to die and He’s not changing the date just because you ordered salad instead of curly fries. If you’re supposed to die of a heart attack at age 55, that isn’t going to change. It was your time…it was already written.
