I really don’t see what the big fuss is about .They are African Americans who paved the way for several others after them.How many People can say that they have done the things these people have done. Dennis Rodman was once a NBA player who showed the world no matter how different he was and horrible he was he was still able to do his job.I’ve seen several kids wear his jersey back in his prime.Look at T.O people scream and yell for him now and he isn’t known for his good behavior. Yeah O.J simpson committed a crime but he set records and he his legacy still lives on especially to those who watched him.Should we do away with the video footage of this man doing his thing on the field. .Give me one thing that Rupaul has done negatively besides be himself.He had as show of his own on VH1 for a minute.Being yourself doesn’t make you a bad person nor a horrible role model.it’s showing kids no matter who they are they can overcome obstacles in life to be successful no matter what the world labels as a bad person…They need to get over that. This is one time the NAACP stepped in at the wrong time. There are several other incidents going on in America that they need to stand up for.These people did not break their necks to be degraded.How many of people in Black history in history books had clean slates.Malcom X sure didn’t .They can only say this because these three people have lived in our time and we are the ERA of judging.Hell if the paprazzi existed then there would be no history according to peoples views.Look at whats been going on in Chicago and teen violence.Look at how many black schools are deprived of certain subjects that the future generation of Black America will need to survive.Teen pregnancy,Black youth dying because of HIV/AIDS and the list goes on. At the end of the day they where in positions doing well and succeeded. Thats more than what half of us can’t even come close to.They can miss me wit this one.

Of course, these ppl mentioned in the article would be used as Black heroes of our history by the opponents of the “chess game”. They would never use Liberace, Larry Bird, Tiny Tim as examples of serious heroes/heroines of history to their impressionable youth. It is important that parents or parent — grandparents — neighbors reinforce our history. I think what they are aiming at is on the lines for… a more historical role models for BLACK HISTORY. You have to understand that this is a reflection towards/with OTHER PEOPLES children in a public view point. Im not saying that what they did was absolutely wrong, but come on… you have to admit this would be seen as to make a mockery of a historical event… even though it should be looked at every day and not one month out of the year. Its seems the only time that black history is taken seriously. The problem lies in that UTLA (United Teachers of Los Angeles) would only “insulate” and protect these teachers. Unfortunately, there are MANY educators of LAUSD with the exact same mind-set in how they “perceive” black people. [Head nod] at Sista MoniQTee—she hit the nail on the head. Because this school in centered in a poverty-stricken locale (the lower east side, not Watts for correction) with a low tax base and high crime, many educators do not even want the “combat pay” just for coming into communities such as this one and do not hold ANY “level of expectation” in educating black children. There ARE black parents that DO do “what’s going on,” but unfortunately, there are not enough black parents that WILL assemble to voice their displesure and criticisms to the school administrators or to the head of LAUSD—Cortines.

This is elementary school. Middle school kid’s couldn’t be so naive.

I would much rather see a more inclusive selection of icons during Black History Month than to continue with reflecting on the “select few” that are deemed “good” usually by Blacks. I mean if I see any more Black History Month events that only focus on people like Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King, Jr. I’m going to scream. Roas did a good thing that launched a larger movement but she wasn’t the first Black woman to take a stand on segregated buses but because she had connections and not an unmarried pregnant young lady hers is the story told and elevated. Martin wasn’t the one originally slated to take the helm of the Civil Rights Movement rather he got thrust there since he was heterosexual (of course it turns out now that we find he was also a womanizer). OJ’s mistake was dropping a Black woman after becoming famous and opting for a White one instead. Rodman just plain has his own style but has issues and his White wife wants out. Just to add to the mix, Tiger messed up marrying that golddigging White woman. Patterson (of New York) is jut a hot mess; damn being blind is one thing but being arrogant and stupid just won’t do and now his poliical career is over and his “friends” are bailing out. RuPaul is doing his own thing and doing it well and quite frankly stands as a role model of being proud of who you are no matter what others say and that is a message young Blacks need to hear and understand. I’d much rather watch RuPaul’s drag race than America’s Next Top Model; not because I think drag queens or the gay lifestyle is a good thing but because I totally disagree with the entire modeling industry because it promotes the exploitation of women and creates a bad self-image for women.

Initially, I thought they should be removed from any school that a minority attends…but then…what kind of message would they send the white students about minorities? People who use the excuse “I was just playing around” when it comes to other races celebrations usually end up going too far. I am not saying these people are racist but they wanted to achieve several things: 1) they wanted to get a rise out of the African-American community (check!) and 2) they probably have no respect for black history month in the first place(double check!). My point is any reasonable, mature, and considerate person would have known better. That being said, if you are tired of hearing about people complaining about racial discrimination I think we can AT LEAST all agree that this was inappropriate simply because of the fact that it was disrespectful (hopefully).

Let me first say that these teachers should be fired! I think that we miss the point when we talk about O.J.’s and Rodman’s past heroics or Ru Paul’s right to make the choices that Ru Paul has made. The important matter is the intent of these teachers. They intended to diparage the history of African Americans. They chose O.J., Rodman and Ru Paul as negative symbols, notwithstanding their virtues, innocence or past accomplishments. It was started because the power that be , for years did not include any positive role model in the history books that were people of color. Now I know in this age of enlightment that we feel it’s okay for people to mock us. We have decided to except what white people say as ignorance or a joke. If a brother or sister made fun of your family would you except it or stand up and say it’s not right. This is the same thing. These teachers are making fun of you whole racial family. This was no mistake. I’m a child of the 50′s I still remember Sambo, Uncle Remos, Buck Wheat and all the other mockeries of our people. Like it or not these three are black and they have made history:
Rupaul for being a drag queen, having his own show and having a career in the music industry.
Dennis for being a #1 rebounder and being a sell out.
OJ for being a sell-out and being the first black man that I know of that got away with double homicide, shutting down a highway in a slow-speed chase and being a football player.

Years ago I was ridin on the Wilshire bus in LA readin a book. Remember the flack Farrakan caught for saying that Hitler was great? The Jewish people didn’t care that Hitler had accomplished some incredible political things in a very short period of time. Alright, first lets remember that Black History Month was started so that history could be balanced to include us as black people. That means (usually)the things that have made a significant difference in history. Not good history or bad history, but history. That being said, these children were a part of a parade. The teachers should have shown respect for our struggles by providing positive representations of our history. The fact that they didn’t can’t be avoided and should definitely be questioned; and those questions should be asked while they sit at home WITHOUT pay.

Right and wrong aren’t very hard to see here. These teachers were wrong and they knew they were wrong. That can’t be questioned or shouldn’t be anyway. I can think of one way to fix all of this. Just include us in the history. We have earned our places there. This country “America”, after the natives to this land were killed, maimed, and herded to the center of the country; this country was built on our backs. Blood was shed, bodies were crippled, and spirits were broken. Through all of this we overcame the ignorance that others tried to force on us. We overcame the loss of our own history and created one for ourselves here. That should be acknowledged and celebrated.

These teachers knew all of this and decided to “even” out the history lesson for that parade. They were wrong, it was not appropriate and they knew it.

HELL YEAH those teachers should be fired and denied unemployment as well. Those teachers knew exactly what they were doing. It is time for people to make this world a better place and respect each other regardless of color. Teachers are not only educators of children, but so are their parents.

Dennis Rodman was a bad boy off the court but at the same time he was one of the greatest defensive players on the court. I was a pivitol part of championships for both Detroit(BOOOOO) and DA Bulls. And OJ Simpson was a great running back in College and the pros, he did win the Heisman. History is history, good bad or indifferent. Yes OJ was a role model before he was accused and acquitted of double murder. Dennis Rodman was a great basketball player, but, I don’t ever remember him being a role model, not a good one anyway. Ru Paul is Ru Paul and he makes a beautiful woman, by the way. But, these are black men and they will forever be a part of our history. Our children should know the good and the bad. Without any doubt these teachers need to be let go. It’s not all about the photos. It’s about taking advantage of these kids who don’t really know. What stands out in my mind is the Poor Judgement they used in choosing these role models for a Black History Month Celebration, in which they gave their students pictures of them to parade around. We need to be outraged about the poor judgement they displayed. Our children have enough negative subliminal messages coming their way throughout the day. Do we really want our Teachers: people we trust to give our children the best education, as well as, be positive role models to them to make judgements like this one??? Everyday I drop my son off at school, I feel at ease with his teachers. These three teachers can not be trusted!!! Its one thing to acknowledge people for who they are (the good with the bad). Lets be real! Parents, We know the images that we want our children to have. Right now they are children and sooner than later they will be young adults making their own choices in life… for now lets be parents and care about what our schools are doing. Black History month is intended to ba a celebration of the accomplishments of key African American movers and shakers in moving us forward as a racial group. Without any disrespect towards the 3 in question, I do wonder what was the intent of the teachers in choosing them. When I think of great African American leading figures throughout our history, these 3 do not come to mind (not to take away from their individual successes in their fields).

Obviously the teachers knew and conspired together to either disparage or mock Black History Month. Who know their true motivations except them. Nevertheless I think the Black Community should be offended that OJ Simpson and Dennis Rodman were included. There are many Blacks alive and passed that could have been chosen. There are black Scientist, Doctors and Lawyers known and unknown that could be used as role models for our minority youth.

Nevertheless, despite poor judgment and insensitivity I think we would be better served if the Teachers apologized and were required to do a public project regarding great but unknown Black Historical Figures and place these projects in their classrooms and other public arenas. They should not loose their jobs over this incident. They should also be required to read and write a report on the books Slavery by Another Name by Douglas A Blackmon and Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington.

I think something good can come from this incident of insensitivity and we need not over react.

I feel the teachers acted in concert to mock black heroes and the innocence of impressible young black children.. The teachers should be fired as this is a form of racial prejudice. There are blunt and subtle forms of prejudice. I would suspect that the black parents that wasn’t offend or through that this incident was overblown are not educated black folks. As any educated black person or educated non black person would be able to see the racial prejudice, mockery of our impressive, postiveness and accomplished black people. Simpson, Dennis Rodman and RuPaul are not the people I would want our young people to emulate or believe these people represent the best of the African-American community,” I do believe this was intental and a way to show negativeness about black people to our young black children. Black history month is a opportunity to show the world that there are positive, successful, accomplished and wonderful black people that one can be proud of and want to emulate. We do not need anyone to represent black folks in a negative light. To me putting O.J. Simpson, Dennis Rodman and RuPaul in the Black history celebration is like telling these impressible children that these are famous black folks you can emulate, be a criminal, do a lot of negativeness and display bad behavior as we don’t expect much from you black children/ black people because we expect you to be negative because the color of your skin, which makes you no good.

Even with the positive, high achiever and successful black people that anyone would want their kid to emulate, as there are still the prejudice non blacks that want to say something negative or show are heroes in a negative light just because they are black people and the color of their skin is different.

Thank goodness there were children from other classes/ non- prejudice teachers at the school that displayed photos of more appropriate black role models, such as Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman and President Barack Obama, Gabriel Blackson.

I find it interesting, that they only show the reaction of the person who thought that this wasn’t an issue. If you as a black person can’t see the problem, then you are the problem.

Were those pics in the video the actual photos used in the parade? If so, I would question the motive of those teachers also. Why was there a pic of o.j. in a courtroom getting tried for murder instead of playing football or rodman in a basketball uniform instead of pic of piercings in his face? What other photos of black people were carried in the parade besides those 3? If you don’t see the racism in this, you just don’t get it.

Black History Month is about celebrating the achievements, accomplishments of Black role models within our community. Not about people who cannot necessarily provide a positive testament or who have brought disgrace to themselves. Now how can Dennis Rodman, Rupaul and OJ stand as a testament of what is positive about our community and what are you telling children when we provide them with these images?

Some of the parents did not see nothing wrong with it meanwhile the three white male teachers definitely conspired to do this. This just show how some people do not have a brain, are plain stupid or can’t read between the lines. I can see the truth and I would not be surprise if those three teachers are connected to a racist organization with an agenda. How would I know? The beauty of the internet and television. A program came on stating that certain white supremacy groups covered their tracks by blending in so no one suspected who they really are. They don’t for example walk around like skinheads anymore, they hide any marks/tattoo on their body that could expose them and dress like the rest of us. From there they make it into any jobs where they can plant the seed of hatred around as the teachers done. A perfect example of how they do that is using OJ Simpson and Dennis Rodman who both dated/married white women, beat them and one was murdered. See what those teachers saying? That old phrase….action speak louder than words speak volumes. When I went to school in Europe we didn’t do black history once month every year like here but they teach me through out my school year (10 months) about famous Black writers and poetry writers from the motherland, Russia, South America, Canada and the Islands, inventors, scientists even soldiers. Why are we not seeing more of this kind of teaching in Black History here in the US leader of the world to give inspiration to our children? I bet they don’t teach that 60 million black people died in slavery while being shipped to America, South America and the Caribbeans drowned, became seriously ill and thrown off ships or started a mutiny and get killed. This I was taught not by a black person but a white European.

I disagree with the young mother in the video, Rodman and Simpson were former sports celebrities that’s true. However, it is the intent that counts, these teachers purposely made the children carry pictures of a convicted criminal, an irresponsible former basketball player and a blatant homosexual. And another thing it is the job of all parents to teach their children and the one thing black parents should do is started black history in community centers for young people. They can go for 3 hours on Saturdays or 1-2 hours on the weekdays after school. This is how we did it back in Britain so when any child/children started school at the age of 5-7 no racist teachers can teacher some bs and tell them this is their true history. I for one know because I been there and a teacher was reprimanded by the headmistress (she was white)for failing a student who said Egypt is in Africa. Because of an encyclopedia (written by famous white men go figure) which had an ancient map of the world that child got an A+ and an apology from the teacher with the stern headmistress as witness! It is funny speaking on Black History, I watch the past month go by and there was no information concerning black history on TV,unless you have TV ONE or BET,All the other channels showed everything from the Kennedys to other cultures nothing about Black History. To me this is nothing but a classic example of hypocritical the NAACP is. They have this “fantasy” image of blacks when in reality it’s just the personal taste of bourgeois(i think i’m spelling it right) people. Just like the situation regarding the late Rosa Parks, for years in school we were taught that she was the icon that led to the boycott for civil rights, by going to jail for refusing to give up her seat. So many others had the exact same experience, but because they were, if i’m not mistaken, women on welfare, or in other words they didn’t have the prestige or social class so they didn’t matter. And it was bias since the late Ms. Parks WORKED for the NAACP. They only function when it’s a celebrity or economically upper class blacks but the average blacks they could care less. And I don’t care what the spokesman said, THE FACT THAT RUPAUL WAS GAY AND TRANSVESTITE WAS EXACTLY WHY THEY WERE UPSET. The NAACP and these so-called “black leaders” are so petty about the slightest things that tarnishes their image, yet not a damned thing do they do about the problems in the black community that needs to be dealt with. I do not agree with the teacher’s giving students pictures of RuPaul, Dennis Rodman, or O.J. I don’t think that they need to be fired for this though. They need to be repremanded and be talked to reguarding racial incident. I am NOT going to blame all whites for this situation though. There are whites who are not prejudiced and there are also whites who teach our black children that do a great job with our children. I will be quick to defend those who deserve it and quick to admonish those who don’t. My wife is white and a school teacher. She participated in a walk to read event at her school where she went to talk to 4th grade girls. She presented a lesson on Madame C.J. Walker to the young girls in that class. She shared the drive that she had as well as how she was self taught in her field. I went to tape the lesson for my wife to use in apply for National Board Certification. I was impressed with all the knowledge that my wife had researched and presented to these girls. So, for those who say that white’s don’t have a place in teaching our youth, go watch and observe those “white” teacher’s you are so quick to criticize because you never know they may be the ones that are truely empowering our youth to try and make something of their lives.

The purpose of Black History Month is to uncover the history and the wealth of knowledge that has laid dormant within our community. These teachers used poor judgement in selecting the pictures they did. As an educator myself, and as an African American, I found it appalling that they did what they did. However, we need to get to the core of their thinking. Why did they select these persons when there are thousands of African American role models to chose from. I would say that who they choose, are not the best role models in the world, if at all. Evidently, these teachers did not like their jobs too much.

The teachers were out of line and need to be punished. Black History Month was created to highlight the achievements and accomplishments of outstanding African Americans. The three that were picked did have achievements and accomplishments, but were not appropriate picks for the elementary school students and the presentation at hand. I am an educator and I had the students select their own African American to study and present to the class. There were a few picks that were not appropriate and I had the students reselect. Teachers are held to a higher standard because we are doing a job that is the foundation to all other industries. Learning is essential and these teacher will be sure to learn a lesson due to their ignorance.

I have said it once and I will say it again, black history is just that black history. DO NOT discriminate against your own kind because if you do then you may as well put on the white sheets and white hood of the KKK because then you are no better then they are.

The Jedi Mind Trick! At the same time the OJ trial was going on there was another trial going on that was very similar. It was a very rich White man and who was sprung over a beautiful black college student. The world has a history of black oppression. Not one word of this trial was broadcast in the public forum. The white guy was guilty as sin, the caught the hit man his hired who promptly snitched. Where was the outrage? It took 3 yrs for them to finally send the guy to jail after he was found guilty. We have racist all over american especially on the nations police forces. This teacher should be fired and get a McJob. I was a honors student and i remember telling my teacher that i wanted to be a fighter pilot on career day, and i was promptly told that i needed to look into construction. This sort of s**t is still happening every day in our schools.

Yes these teachers obviously knew what they were doing, and had a pretty good idea of how it would be received. No matter how they try to spin this now, the intent was to poke fun at the parade they were being forced to participate in.

2. For what ever reason, these teachers have not come to terms with their own racial bias. (Not everyone grew up with friends, school mates and Army buddies of another race)
3. They are being asked to plan and participate in a function they do not believe in, (A school parade celebrating Contributions of Black Americans should have been voluntary).

Just as important is our response after the fact. You can get Mad as HE** or you can laugh and move on. If you fire them they will have a platform and every goofy reporter will want an interview! This is not the last time something like this will happen. Do we want to give these type of people national attention every time they act juvenile? MOVE ON.

I don’t think you read my post completely. I am not defending the teachers in LA, or making excuses, in fact I start by saying “they knew what they were doing” … this statement is not a defense.

My comments are my evaluation of the facts: 1) you cannot change attitudes until you understand how they are formed. 2) a dramatic response will only attact more of the same, (after all, OJ, Dennis and RuPaul were on a school board pre-approved list). 3) Why would you want someone who doesn’t appreciate the intent of the festival to be in charge of any part of it?

If all you want to do is complain then O.K. just go on and complain. But if your bag of ideas is empty when it comes to fixing the problem you will not improve the lives of anyone. I do not want my children to have to face the same prejudices we face, but it will not happen over night.

These 3 teachers are an indicator of how wide spread problems are. Do you really think they would do this if they didn’t have some quiet approval that it would be OK? WAKE UP! Fire them? That won’t happen, all three were on an approved list, but even if it did, how will you replace them with teachers that don’t have the same ideas? At least these guys have been out-ed.

I’m open to ideas and ready to be corrected. You tell me how to improve these attitudes?

Who is anybody to say what is a positive or negative role-model. Maybe some gay or transgender black students look up to Rupaul. other than being gay,which should not be considered offensive in todays times, Ru has always kept a positive image and carried himself with dignity. Denis Rodnman, aside from the recent drug rehab crap, was a very talented athlete back in the day. The same can be said for O.J., whom was found innocent of the charges against him! Regardless of our own personal opinions about Dennis, O.J and Ru, it would it is equaly as stupid and offensive of black people to deny them their talent and their place in black history. They have achieved just as much as some of the cliche’ choices for black history month that people seem to deam more appropriate. By saying otherwise, we only replace one form of ignorance with another!

That moron Jenkins is the one who should be fired. First of all, everyone can’t be a Mandela or an Obama, but all three of these guys made a positive impact on American culture, whether the idiot Jenkins wants to admit it or not. To say that these teachers made a concerted effort to demean Black History week sounds very paranoid and, I think homophobic as well. Other than OJ, the other two have never been to jail for murder or robbery. RuPaul is definitely a role model for any man who wishes to express his feminine side…come to think of it, so’s Dennis Rodman, and I’m not being sarcastic, because many young men have committed suicide over gender identity issues. No, I think Mr. Jenkins should remember that the good old NAACP is the same organization that wanted to boycott “The Color Purple” and made life hell for another positive role model, Whoopi Goldberg.
