Ex-Police Chief Convicted For Lying About Torture Of Suspects

CHICAGO – A federal jury has convicted former Chicago police Lt. Jon Burge of perjury and obstruction of justice charges of lying about the torture of suspects.

Jurors delivered their verdict Monday. Burge now faces up to 45 years in prison.

Burge was accused of lying in a civil suit when he said he’d never seen or participated in the physical abuse of suspects in order to get confessions.

The decorated former lieutenant had testified in his own defense, pitting his word against that of five men who claimed Burge and his officers shocked, suffocated and beat them in the 1970s and 1980s.

Burge was fired from the police department in 1993 over the alleged mistreatment of a suspect. He never was criminally charged in the case.

    Police Terrorism (brutality) is a national epidemic. The Federal Government needs to take a stand. But they will not because terrorism by police of the Black community is public policy. Its not about bad apples.

    The purpose of the police in Our communities is for Containment. Not to protect and serve when it comes to us. Not saying all police have that in their heart when they join the force, but the purpose of the organization they are joining is to contain the Black Community. We need Our own Security Forces.

    And what about Political Prisoners OBAMA! He needs to grant them all clemency. They were fighting against a known racist, apartheid government, brutal to the Black Community. Our Brave Warriors that fought against it on Our behalf were either assasinated, exiled, or Locked away. We have over 100 political prisoners still languishing in U.S. prisons. We are a sorry People if we continue to allow them to remain there. We are not Free, and the Struggle is not Over!

    I dont usually comment but Police Brutality has been going on for a long time. Obama is a start but the Police still assault and assassinate minorites and it goes mostly uncovered by major news stations. I was assaulted by cops and the only thing that happened was I got the fake charges against me dropped. When will we as a people band together and fight back?
