40 years is a lifetime. Does the punishment fit the crime? Our justice department is know for handing out the time for many convictions. I guess the overall issue is don’t to the crime if you can’t do the time. However, if I was in the same situation, I would do the same. If and if he completes his time, what can he offer society? I have run into people that have done 20 or more years and they are worthless. Most of these people can not function in society any more and even more become a ward of the state. So like a few of the others statements, give these people the option of choosing to end their life or do the time. I can’t blame him.
So the outcome, he is going to be put on suicide watch. The state/government has to protect their INVESTMENT. No body, no cash. Are they going to watch this guy the entire 40 years. Who’s to say he will not succeed. If he really wants to kill himself, he is going to find a way and do it. Simply put, then where will the crooked a% system be. Lastly, I truly believe that if a person is sentenced to twenty years or more, why not give them the option of death. These long sentences promote torture, homosexuality, disease, and much, much, more. How does longer sentences for certain, and I mean certain, crimes help society?

How did he get the razor blade in the courthouse? He must be a county inmate (I’m assuming), so they don’t get searched or go through a metal screening before coming to court. But I’m confused. His lawyer says he saw his client do something with his arm, and later on in the text they say the defendant had an object confiscated before the hearing.

some of these posts on here are comical! but i do agree sh!t 40 yrs thats a long time cause i always said if by any bad nightmarish situation, i was ever sentanced to prison for a long a$$ period of time they might as well kill me in the courthouse, or they going to be delivering a dead a$$ body to the prison

UMMMMMMM, ok I live in Dallas. Crazy stuff is ALWAYS happening with the jails and trials here! I agree that 40 years IS a long time. They never said what he did. HOWEVER, WTF was you thinking about slitting your throat in the courtroom. Did you actually believe you would cut deep enough and bleed out fast enough to die??? This is aint tha d*mn movies! Then you getting rolled out of there TALKING!!!!!!! That was just a dumb move. You could have tried to get shot or something rather than the drama of a cut throat. Now WE, the TAXPAYERS have to PAY FOR: the clean-up of YOUR BLOOD, YOUR hospital bill, and YOUR extended stay in the TDC system. DAM*IT! Next time, try NOT breaking the law.

Penal system chaos. It’s fricking dispicable. Where are the checks and balances? Where’s this guy’s meds? Thank God he didn’t try to harm anyone else. I can’t say I feel too sorry for him, he seems to have mapped this thing out, I guess. However, this kind of behavior is entirely too costly for the already plummeting economy. I know times are desperate, but geesh.

A better reply to the sentence would have been to make the state prove that forty years of being isolated from the community was in the interest of public safety.
In any case however, this man will serve atleast some of his time in a mental hospital.

DALLAS — A suburban Dallas man used a thin blade from a safety razor to slit his throat in an apparent suicide attempt Tuesday in the courtroom where a judge had just sentenced him to 40 years in prison.

Marcial Anguiano, 47, of Duncanville, was taken from the Dallas County courthouse on a stretcher with his neck covered in bandages, state District Judge Larry Mitchell said.

Anguiano, who was talking as he was carried out, was hospitalized in stable condition, Dallas County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Leach said. The blade cut into muscle but did not strike an artery.

Anguiano took the stand Tuesday and said he hoped to be sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to aggravated assault for cutting his niece with a butcher knife. But the judge, influenced by the defendant’s five previous prison stints, instead sentenced him to 40 years.

“He looked up at me kind of quizzically and said, ’40 years?’” Mitchell told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “And I said, ‘Yes, 40 years.’”

Anguiano immediately pulled out the razor blade and “put it to his throat hard, and blood started gushing out,” Mitchell said.

The courtroom bailiffs rushed the defendant, handcuffed him and led him to the holding cell adjacent to the courtroom, where he waited until paramedics arrived.

No one else was injured.

“If the bailiffs hadn’t intervened, he was certainly capable of causing his own death,” Mitchell said

Ok Im gonna have fun with this one: number one it was a flesh wound, no band aid required, I would have stuck a pretzel on it. He knew he was going to prison for a long time, thats why he pulled that b.s. Now he gets to use state tampons , the wrapper says “do something good with your period”, or “have a happy period”…..how about “when keeping it real goes wrong”. That flesh wound will never heal, dudes gonna use him like “pez” candi head bent like 4:15 and booty passed for cigarettes. I know Im going to hell for this one.

The judge should have let the victim of the assault cut his throat. Would have saved us a whole lot of taxpayers dollars. Or better yet, he should have cut his own throat BEFORE he assaulted anyone. Fool.

That’s what we need more of. I mean, the whole penal system can “go green” by letting these fools off themselves. No electricity was used in this, and TX is very hot this year so that’s really saving energy!

Hes was out on parole for a prior charge of buglary. While out he assualted his sister and then turned and stabbed his neice in the chest and through her arm. (disabled for life) Marcial was messed up in the head.
This bastard deserves everything he gets. His a sorry piece of work for trying to make people feel pitty for him by attempting to slit his throat.
He had the knives in his room. Waiting for a reason to use them. He kicked the door in to her home and attacked his sister. Then went and attacked his niece.

After attacking the women, he ran from the cops for almost a month. Later caught by Walmart security shop lifting.

He is sc**. Nothing but it. Just one of those smooth talkers that were able to talk his way out on parole. Only to reek havoc on the people around him.

I know the facts, and what I say is the truth. His sister is my mother in law.
