Bakari Kitwana Asks:  Cornel West

What challenges face Black Leadership under a Barack Obama Presidency?

We caught up with Dr. Cornel West in Cleveland, Ohio last week in the midst of his crisscrossing the state to help get out the early vote for Barack Obama. Dr. West has been publicly critical of the Obama campaign and how Blacks might fare under an Obama presidency—given the tenor of the campaign trail that increasingly assuages white fear and anxiety of a Black president.

Dr. West has been particularly outspoken about Obama’s strategic omission of Dr. Martin Luther King’s name from his nomination acceptance speech at the DNC. Here West talks about the fallout from his critical comments in August, his mixture of support and criticism, and his views on what an Obama presidency will mean to Black American Leadership.

<br />

Cornel West is University Professor at Princeton University in the Center for African American Studies. The author of the 1993 groundbreaking Race Matters, his forthcoming book out next week is entitled Hope on a Tightrope: Words and Wisdom (Hay House, 2008).

Dr Cornel West hit it right on. We have to ensure that we put pressure on Obama once elected. There is no better time for change than now

The change obama speaks of is not realistic in my opinion. I doubt it if the senators n congressmen are going to tow the line that basically will take special interests money out of their greedy hands. The people need to do much more than elect him president, they have to elect non corrupt people to public office on all levels. I dont think voters have that level of focus…if they did the system wont be s corrupt as it is now and bush would have been allowed to stay in office.
In any event time will tell.

I agree with Cornel on many points and disagree with others, over the past many years. Obama is not going to be the “black” peoples president he will be every ones presidents. So, anything anyone wants him to do for help poor & disadvantaged black people (and black people as a whole) he will do to help all people. So, to say “we” need to put pressure on him is nonsense to me, pressure for what purpose, to only help the schools in Harlem and Oakland and East St Louis, but ignore those in the Spanish Harlem or Kansas, or Phoenix? Obama wants to help everyone, so those black people who think they can now get a “hook up” or a pass, you are sorely mistaken. He wants to help everyone, because he will be the president of everyone! And if he does that, black people will have nothing to worry about. He knows inner-city people, parents & schools need help, just as everyone does regardless of color. I am voting for him because I think he can help this country as a whole and as long as he does that, Black, White, Asian, Indian, inner-city, middle class, suburban, and everyone will win (except maybe the overly rich). He cannot do everything he is saying, no one can, but he can at least get things in the right direction. I am not voting for him, because I think he give “us” something special. Vote Obama!

Dr West is correct Obama getting into the White House will be a huge victory for us as Blacks psychologically..BUT Rome wasn’t built in a day! And Obama can’t be expected to work miracles overnight for just Blacks..he is working for progression for All people. And he will need ALL of us to support his efforts long after he gets into the White House..Our civic duty doesn’t end at the polls..

NEWSONE, THIS INTERVIEW WAS VERY INTERESTING. I THINK TWO QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ASKED TO SENATOR MCCAIN, THAT COULD BREAK THIS THING ALL THE WAY OPEN FOR SENATOR OBAMA. ARE YOU FOR ALL AMERICANS? HE MIGHT SAY YES, THEN YOU ASK WHY DID YOU VOTE AGAINST MAKING DR.KING BIRTHDAY A NATIONAL DAY OF CELEBRATION?

I THINK SEN.OBAMA IS THE MAN FOR THE JOB IN THIS HOUR THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A LEADER WITH A NEW AND A FRESH VISION TO MOVE THIS COUNTRY IN TO THE NEXT LEVEL. THIS IS BIGGER THAN US AS BEING THE BLACK RACE, THE WORLD IS LOOKING AT US (THE USA)WE AS A PEOPLE NEEDED TO START LOOKING AT THE BIG PICTURE.

Response to my fellow Blacks who are “Obama Bashers” – My life experience is the best reference to helping you to understand what I am about to say.
Poor all my life, but worked hard as hell and went to top schools, grew up five different locations in the S. Bronx NYC (“while” still the murder capital of the US for 20 years straight). I had a gun to my head, a knife to my throat, was mugged 5 times, sited for death by gangs twice, caught in several crossfires, but never joined a gang and never carried a gun, and by God’s grace, never got hurt. Then to help my mom I spent 20 years in “the” most racist division of all the military branches, Gulfport MS (2 known Klan headquarters, home of Jefferson Davis)Klan were in the ranks and the city sponsored parades.
My hate for oppression made me speak out, I was a constant target, AND I NEVER MADE MUCH RANK EITHER! I saw Black males in that “secretly” white supremacist environment (my school and military) only made rank or got scholarships when they kept their MOUTH SHUT! But when we made it (only because we avoided the traps and the grades couldn’t be denied), we “effectively” fought the oppression, NO EXCEPTIONS! BLACK FOLKS (including Dr. West) DON’T GET THAT! They CONTINUALLY INSIST THAT WE SELF-DESTRUCT BEFORE WE GET IN POSITIONS OF POWER! Why don’t you look at Obama’s history? Why don’t we realize that despite his influences he has supported and addressed the main issues of the poor (Blacks)THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE – Children, Education, Jobs, Elderly, Health care, CIVIL RIGHTS LAWYER! BUT NOTHING IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU!? YOU CLAIM TO BE SO KEMETIC AND AWAKE ON BLACK PLANET AND FAIL TO REALIZE REALITY, AND RELENTLESSLY ATTACK THE OPPORTUNITY HIS CANDIDACY PRESENTS – UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE. YOU INSIST THAT OBAMA VOICE OUR SUFFERING BEFORE HE IS IN A POSITION TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT – CUT OFF OUR NOSE TOO SPITE HIS FACE AND OURS. I SUBMIT THAT YOU ARE MORE ASLEEP THAN AWAKE.

I am very concerned with all of the black people that are voting for Barack just because he is a black man. What happened to voting for someone because they held the same spiritual views that you claim to stand on? Just remember that he stands for gay marriage, he stands for women having abortions. He walked away from a black minister that was teaching the truth. Let’s get real here. If you walk away from your principles to be “number one”, what else will he abandon?

Lets continue to support each other in hopes that we rise as a people.

    Quote—
Each day celebrate life! Let memories be the driving force for your will to succeed. Never look back on your yesterdays as a desire to want what was, but rather accept what is now as it is now. The best days of your life is lying ahead of you. Live everyday with great joy celebrating now while all along pressing forward with a smile knowing that it only gets better by each blessing moment. Lay down your worries, fears, doubts and despair. Enjoy the gift of life while you’re still here, it only gets better……

So stop stressing yourself over all those little nothings and live. Everything will piece it’s self together by and by. Don’t be a stranger to your life, live it……….celebrate!!!!!!!

More then putting pressure on Obama there needs to a renewal of the pressure we put on ourselves, our families and the people of our communities.

As long as we keep telling our children “college is not for everybody” whites will continue to out attend and out graduate us.

In my house not attending and not graduating college is not an option.

I don’t agree with everything Dr. West say, but at times he bring the real issues of blacks to the forefront. Yes we have to do what we can (VOTE) to get Sen. Obama into office however we need to broaden our minds, and understand that the office he will be filling is not for one people.

It’s been that way for to long, like any other black in this great U.S.of.A I fill our time is over due. Yes we want to hold him accountable while he is in office, but lets be fare at the same time. Maybe one day it will click as Dr. King, Min. Malcolm, Dr. West, Dr. Cosby and many others have been saying for years education is the answer.

If a better life is what we all want, then it start with education. If were not getting out of bed until 1:00 p.m. to look for a job how much can the man do. Realize when he helps one poor he helps all. Some blacks need to get pass this color thing. Before you Obama to be responsible for you be responsible for yourselfs.

I think what Mr. West is saying makes a lot of sense for this particular topic, however; i think once again we are investing too much energy and time in areas that do not make a differnce either way. The president is not the king of the country or sole controller of America. He is merely a civil servent. The president is just a spokesperson, a C.E.O. of the buisness called, “the United States,” for the financial stability of America and her people. He is there because all of the people who actually run the country can not all at once give a State of the Union Address. Their agendas are colored, modified, and, typed so the president can reveal them to us on television. The president may be able to recommend, but; if oil tycoons, real- estate wolves, big retail pigs, and other enormous buisness dogs know that a particular venture will not present a gauranteed profit, the president will speak for them. So what if he is a black man. Firstly there is no race on earth registered with the United Nations called, “The Black Race.” For us to continiue calling each other that should further let you know that there are more important things we need to take care of more immediately than applying so much focus on an issue that’s really so popular because of media influence. We are so knowlegde less and with out wisdom, we are so cultureless and multi-Godded that the media with its evolved science of trickery and mental in fluence, could easily have us overly excited about a chicken that can’t fly. I conclude this by stating that change will not come near us having a “black” president. Change will come when we realize that individually we will go nowhere, but; together we can fly to mars. And I mean “together” in every aspect and sense of that word, no chapters, no sects, no half heart medallions, strict will and full participation. I will leave you with this: The only way to get your belongings back from a bully is to take it back.

I agree with everything put forth by the brother and I have tremendous respect for him as being in the vanguard of the Black struggle. However, I think one important factor is overlooked and that being: it is not so much as Obama is consciously addressing the needs of whites as he is addressing organized power. Blacks are not organized to the point of speaking with one voice on any life-giving matter. If we were we would be recognized and dealt with as such.

Its a mistake to feel we need to put preasure on Barack Obama. I believe he will do the right thing for everyone. Black and white. His focus on the middle class is right where he needs to be. He’s not gonna be able to fix everything in a 4 year cycle. He’s gonna need 8 years in the white house. Were gonna need 8 years to prepare the one who will take over and carry his mantel. We will need 8 years to dispell white myths about a black man governing. Calm there fears. Because we alone cannot vote him or anyone into the white house. If we have an all now approach our victory will be short lived. We need to take these 8 years to organize our ground game.Get more people elected in grass roots politics. We must remain inclusive in this enviroment of inclusion Barack has created. So we can grab Schools boards and city council seats then we can pogress to congressional and senatorial seats. So when the resources come into our community. Where we determine their use. Barack can’t change everything or right all wrongs in one presidential term. If we expect that we will surely be disappointed. Or we may become the rope which is used to tie his hands. The republicans lay in wait with their argument that Barack is only for black folkes. They are looking to play off the white fear and provide the great white hope. Like a Mitt Romney Sarah Palin..This is chess babe and we gotta play it that way. What Barack has done is open the door and given us the tools. Now its up to us to effect political change at a grass roots level. So that a black man being president becomes an after thought.

    OBAMA/BIDEN08

I believe that once OBAMA is elected we together must Change America…it’s not for Obama to do alone everybody has to bring this change into being!
This election is truely a Historical Event but as MLK Jr. dreamed now’s the time for this dream to be made manifest but we must as one people help bring this about!
Who are we to put pressure on Obama we best be supporting him and not trying to dissect him and be so deep; afterall he deserves respect because he’s our leader so don’t downplay Obama or rebel against his leadership because he’s doing us a favor by accepting to take on this grave responsibility, now we need to get on board and do our part!

Vote for Obama because it’s best for All not just for your four and no more…or for your two now that’s all we need to do!

    OBAMA/BIDEN08

Well with this being my very first time voting for president, I am very glad to have a black Canidate. Dr. West opened my eyes to some new issues as well as put a deeper understanding to others. I agree with him when he says we have to put the pressure on him now and when he gets elected, but we also need to focus on us as a people and other offices!! OBAMA YALLL!!! GET OUT AND VOTE!!

I respect the opinions of brother Cornel, he is definitely correct in that Barack will be faced with enormous pressure if elected to the white house, but there is no better time in our history for a change. At least he seems like a politician who truly cares and understands the plight of the middle class and poor of the country. I wish the Obama family and our nation well in this quest to make history and change the way our politics have been run for so long.

To be a well spoken negotiator you must be of sound mind. I believe Barack Obama has more sound judgements for the policies he has put forth. But he has much plain to cover if he’s elected.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shawnre24/ shawnre24

This brother Dr. West is deeper than the Matrix trilogy. In fact, I listened to his commentary there also.

It is huge for Obama to win this country’s nomination. Here in Houston the statement is pretty big for local votes and nationwide Democratic votes. People are showing that they want change.

I admit that I hadn’t followed the lack of Rev. King’s name in the acceptance speech and I can’t say that I even know why. I do know that they struggle of African Americans hasn’t been much of an issue specifically. Specifically, I’m not sure if it should be. However, I feel that there should be the utmost concern of all working class individuals and others below the line. When it comes to Americans living in poverty, it’s not about color anymore. It is about survival. I believe when all “minority” people are upheld then Rev. King’s ideals, along with the Civil Rights Movement, are being upheld. Not only would President Obama benefit from revisiting the importance of that movement, our people will benefit from it. Pull your pants up, at least, when applying for a small business loan (I’d prefer all times). Stop giving people reason to FEAR you. Respect someone other than yourself and NuNu. These are hard times in which everyone is affected. Even Billionaire T. Boone Pickens has been hit hard. His losses are more than many Americans will see over the span of their bank accounts.

On another note, I pray that President Obama gets the protection that he needs. I don’t think that our government should take it lightly at all. As a matter of fact, I believe that they should go out of their way to bulk up security for the 1st family at this time. I can’t help but think that someone wants to be a fool of this entire presidential matter. Overstood?

Don’t just Barack the Vote, turn it all the way over!

    Tieuel Legacy! aka Shawnre’…The Devil’s Devil’s Advocate

i am black man that have waited for longtime for us to come up as a people and to come together after all Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did for us and the fight that others have done for us to get to this point i served in the Marine Corp and i am proud of america and i dont look at red or blue i look at usa as a whole and this is something we need we dont want anyone to play the color game because i voted for barrack obama because he had a plan to help us get our enconomy back and health issues solved its history in the making i am so proud that we are here and i am here to see it.

This is our time. I am glad that my sons can see this day. That my grandfather can see this day. As a woman of color and a mother I am so so so proud to give my support to a black man who I know will inspire my sons. Even as I type this I can’t help but cry. For all those that fought for this day and died for this day, who cried, bled and prayed for this day, all I can say is REST EASY . They lit the torch and we continue to carry it on.We are their legacy!
Now when I think about black history I don’t have to only visualize black men and women in chains or beaten or used and abused. Now it is as if in this single moment all the chains are gone. So again I say to all those we have lost along the way over hundreds
    of years …….
REST EASY, REST EASY , REST EASY !!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/md_honey_04/ md_honey_04

I basically agree with Dr. West however I concur with MesomorphicMan. I do not think that we as African Americans should look to Barak Obama as our savior. He has merely helped open the door to allow Black Americans to make the changes that we so desperately want. I do not look to Barak Obama to solve every problem that African Americans face, but hopefully he will provide US with the resources that we need so that we as African Americans can solve OUR OWN problems. If anything Barak Obama being the first African American president of the United States of American should encourage all of us rise up and make a conscious effort to solve our own problems instead of waiting for him to do it for us. WE have opened the door for ourselves by refusing to ride in the back of the bus, refusing to receive education in segregated schools, refusing to eat in BLACK ONLY restaurants, refusing to be beaten, lynched, and castrated, refusing to not be able to vote, by registering to vote, and by standing in line for hours to cast our ballots. Now we must ask ourselves will walk through the door or will we timidly stand outside and complain as others so desperately fight for the CHANGE we need??? Barak Obama 44th President of the United Stated of America!!!!!!
