Every February, people throughout America take 28 days to learn about, remember, and celebrate the contributions of Black people to American society. During the more than four centuries that have passed since this nation took its first steps toward existence, people of African descent have been an integral part of the American story, playing key roles in the political, cultural, and scientific progress we’ve enjoyed thus far.

The Origins Of Black History Month

Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which historian Carter G. Woodson conceived in the second week of February because of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass’s birthdays (Feb. 12 and Feb. 14, respectively). It was expanded into a full month in 1976.

At NewsOne this month, we’ll celebrate Black achievement with profiles of historical figures, photo galleries exploring pivotal years in modern Black history, trivia quizzes, original pieces on the many facets of our history, and more. But we’ll also be doing something different: Celebrating the achievements of little-known, everyday folks who are making contributions to their community on the local and national level. They’re called GAME CHANGERS, and you can take a look at them here as we roll out all 28 over the course of February. Be sure to check back often!

A final note: Over the years, there has been much debate over whether Black History Month is necessary, and whether its existence is counterproductive to recognizing “Black” history as simply American. This month at NewsOne, even as we celebrate, we plan to explore and engage with those criticisms as well. We hope you’ll join the conversation and share your own opinions with us in the comments.

lol Splash BlackPlanet.com has turned into bashBlackPlanet.com and praise everyone else esp. with the addition of NewsOne. I’m shocked actually because I believe Kathy Hughes (TVOne)meant well. My two cents is that there are too non-blacks working for them and Blacks who are like Roland Martin, Christie, April Ryan and Michael Steele.

@BlackPlanet.com The executive level and moderators need to really take a look at what has happened in its first 10 years on the “net.” It’s beginning to feel uncomfortable here for a Black person who has ethnic pride.

We as black people should NOT be jumping up and down shuckin’ and jivin’ because of this ONE MONTH that was designated for us. Who in hell is society to tell us when we start celebrating each other and when we stop? AND WHY do we have the SHORTEST month? Damn all that…MY black history started for me personally on AUGUST 3, 1978. Now I dont know when it will stop, but it damn sure wont be Feb 28th!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH “CaliFemme23 AND Wind Chimes” MY QUESTION IS WHO DECIDED WHAT MONTH WOULD BE BEST FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH??? AND WHY JUST A MONTH??? BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT BLACK HISTORY IS BEENING MADE EVERY SINGLE DAY… IS THIS JUST ANOTHER FORM OF SO CALL CONTROL OVER A PEOPLE THAT JUST CAN’T BE CONTROLLED AND WITH GOOD REASONS… IT MAKES YOU WONDER WHEN WILL ALL THIS DUMB MESS END…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/WindChimes/ WindChimes

    Great question.
@Black_Queen09 This is Wikipedia’s explanation of the honor we have in America to celebrate our blackness, and our history we have in America – from Africans enslaved in America to African American Blacks of today. The celebration is not our existence as American citizens, but why we are who we are (a new breed of Africans called American Blacks just as South Americans, Puertoricans, etc. evolved over time from the era of African bondage), AND our contributions as we co-exist from bondage to freedom in OUR country we call home.

WIKIPEDIA: Black History Month is a national annual observance for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States, Canada in February, and the United Kingdom in the month of October.

The remembrance originated in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as “Negro History Week.” Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln, and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass. Woodson also founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

I understand Black History is every February but I personally celebrate it every day. Black History is 365 to me.

This is great! We need to know and reflect on this EVERY day so when ignorant “historians” (like Newton Gingrich) make false claims, we have the knowledge to challenge them. We also need to teach our children so that they can walk with pride and confidence. Keep up the good work.

Thank you to those who mission was for Black people to have our FREEDOM, we have that but as with anything some of us are so free that they’ve become FOOLS ,not cherishing and taking advantage of our FREEDOM. Black History Month is EVERYDAY IN MY LIFE. I strongly suggest folks purchase Life Upon These Shores ,Looking at African American History 1513-2008, by Henry Louis Gates Jr,. The book is coffee table material with hundreds of pages if beautiful pictures of Black History as well as our story told by Henry Gates. It is an heirloom of our history and it’s an excellent tool to teach our children our history with. Black folks you won’t go wrong investing in this book.
