The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released its most recent unemployment data. We knew that Black folks (especially men) would be at the bottom, we just didn’t know how bad. Well, it turns out that the numbers exceed even the most pessimistic predictions.

Black unemployment shot up like a rocket during the month of August, rising from an abysmal 15.9 percent to an even more shocking 16.7 percent. Much of the increase was driven by Black male unemployment, which rose from 17 to 18 percent. Black female unemployment remained steady at 13.4 percent, and Black teen unemployment experienced a dramatic increase from 39.2 percent to an astounding 46.5 percent.

If you were white in America, the month of August was pretty good. White unemployment remained consistent across the board, and went down for white males. Overall white unemployment dropped from 8.1 percent to 8 percent. White males saw a decline from 7.9 to 7.7 percent. White women and teens saw their unemployment rates remain unchanged at 7 percent and 23 percent, respectively.

The Obama Administration has a serious problem. Every time the numbers show that chronic Black unemployment has reached crisis levels, I think back to the Obama Administration’s delusional assertion three years ago that a “rising tide will lift all boats” (that targeted economic policy would not work as well as a general policy that helps everyone – after all, he is “everyone’s president”).  Well, I’m here to report to the Obama Administration: The tide not only missed our boat, but Black folks are sinking to the bottom of the economic ocean.

One of the most telling signs of racial inequality in America is the fact that African Americans are not only subjected to the very worst economic circumstances in the country, but we are also not allowed to be upset about it. Middle class Tea Partiers can gather in Washington to complain about health care, wealthy white folks can get upset about a tiny spike in taxes, and white Americans can remain justifiably outraged over a measly eight percent rate of unemployment. But when African Americans say a word about widespread and virtually unprecedented economic suffering in the presence of a Black president, we are referred to as Uncle Toms or told that we are demanding too much.

Perhaps it’s time to grow up and get a political education. Instead of being pacified by a beautiful statue of Dr. King or appearances by President Obama on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, it’s time that we force all of Washington (including Obama) to have their “Beyonce Moment” : Say my name. Let me know that you are with me in my suffering. Don’t force my people to live in the socioeconomic basement in painful silence so as not to offend a powerful Black man from an Ivy League University. The call to consciousness within Black America is not a matter of attacking or hating President Obama. It’s a matter of getting the Obama Administration to admit that they were wrong.

Like wide-eyed children, we trusted the Obama Administration and their Wall Street-wired economic advisers to incorporate policies that would make life better for our people, in addition to the rest of America. Well, the evidence is clear and the verdict is in: Those policies have not worked. The president would be wise to let go of the charade, admit that mistakes were made and profess that it’s time to take the country in another direction.

Additionally, African American leaders who continue to work to elevate the Obama campaign without demanding true reciprocity in exchange for the Black vote risk being perceived as political slum lords. Again, this is not to say that one does not have the right to aggressively campaign for President Obama. But it’s another thing to present the president as “the really cool brother you should vote for.” Instead, addressing administration policies and gauging their sensitivity to our community’s needs should be mandatory before simply pulling out the “Black man card” for the next election.

One of the most painful challenges of demanding our rights from Washington is that we are forced to confront the possibility that the Black man we loved so much may not have our best interests at heart. Also, with every mention of Black unemployment comes the predatory glance of blood-sucking Republicans, who are waiting with open arms. Finally, there is the uncomfortable reality that we are harming the progress of one of the greatest Black men in American history. To have Obama in the middle of the government that has played a powerful role in building this cesspool of political neglect is like a slave’s best friend guarding the master’s house on the night of the revolt.

In spite of our respect for Obama, there must come a time when our love for Black folks must supersede any quest for personal or political gain. There must be a time when empty excuses  go out the window, and where African Americans engage in individual and collective action that will get us out of this hell hole. Times have gotten too critical for us to worry about protecting Barack Obama or anyone else – I just want to protect our people.

In my opinon, the most truth filled and thoughtful article I have ever read from the Dr. He comes close to even admitting his own error in judgment with this one. The fact is, Obama does NOT have our (poor, working or middle class irrespective of ethnicity) best interest at heart. Very few people attempt to change the system from within the system by aligning and surrounding himself with so many who have helped the system along for years. All you Obama apologists who want to cast blame everywhere else, it is indeed time to wake up. You have come up with every reason for his compromise with Republicans except the obvious one. HE IS ACTUALLY WORKING WITH REPUBLICANS TO MAINTAIN STATUS QUO.

Turn off the mainstream media, they are on the payroll. You think you’re going to hear truth from people like Sharpton, Shultz, Cooper, Blitzer or Hannity? These clowns are making MILLIONS by making you think this fight is really between Reps and Dems. This is a war of the mind and war between the rich and poor. If you don’t see it that way, then you have simply fallen and can’t get up!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

The first step in waking up?

    Opening your eyes.

Dr. Boyce Watkins wrote an article entitled “Black People Must Be Given Reasons to Support Obama.”
As of September 2011, we don’t have one.

The reasons I didn’t vote for Obama in 2008 are the same reasons I had after meeting him in 2004. Like Dr. Cornel West, I lived in Cambridge Mass and had a front row seat to the “making” of Barack Obama. Barry didn’t care or connect with Black communities in Greater Boston back then and he never would as President.

In fact, Obama’s addiction of avoidance when it comes to ordinary Black people who aren’t rich enough to matter to him started way back…long before the myth of hope and change. Yet Obama, with a major assist from a racist liberal media determined to perpetuate a plantation mindset in Black America pimped race to become President…with absolutely no intention of keeping any promise he made or claimed from MLK’s Dream.

It’s not shocking that our communities are suffering and Black families are falling through the cracks into poverty. Neglecting a living thing always results in decline and eventually death. What did Black America need from Obama? More than money? More than entitlements? More than empty words and toothy grins for the cameras?

    The truth.
    Honesty.
    Respect.
    Dignity.

Obama hasn’t delivered ANY of these things. Yet all of us in America, including Black America drowns in debt of wasteful government spending and failed Obama economic policies. What have we gotten from President Obama as Black people?

    Shame.
    More Debt.
    Fewer Opportunities.
    Silence.
    Neglect.

Kanye West accused President Bush of not caring for Black people after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. An economic tsunami has ripped Black communities in America to shreds, destroying 15 million more lives than the worst of the New Orleans disaster.

Bush waited 3 weeks to notice what Katrina did to Black communities.

    Obama waited three years.

The only “change” we need in America starts in the White House in 2012 with a new President.

The reason is a lot of these blacks folks are lazy and don’t want to work. They would rather collect from the government than get off the couch eating chips and soda watching talk shows. They are having more gets just to get more money from the government. While the black fathers are off making kids with other women and not supporting any of them. The problem isn’t the government it is the lazy blacks that don’t want to work but complain they don’t have a job. Take responsibility for a change and stop looking for someone else to blame. I have a job because I work hard and am not lazy. Case closed.

The case is closed. So is your mind.
Negative Black stereotypes that Barack Obama and the LIBERAL media profit from are why tens of millions of Black families are suffering.

You got your job because you work hard? I agree. Intelligence didn’t play a role.

I got my job because I have the depth of character, education and humanity to realize that the people you talk down to and about deserve a chance too…wonder how you’d have fared if you were Black?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

I don’t take anything Buffet says too seriously. He is one of the main people who have destroyed this economy while all the while trying to pretend as if he is trying to save it. When is the last time you have ever heard someone on the winning team say hey, lets fix it so things are more level or that I’m losing more? Buffet has been popping this “tax me more shyt” for 30 years now because he knows it’s actually never going to happen. Bill Gates has now caught on to the gimmick and is now doing the same thing!

Okay people, one we as a people Afro-Americans are so hateful towards one another that the increase of unemployement is on us. We look at others and see what they got instead of being happy for one another we just throw a bunch of hate in their way. Now not all of us do that but if one makes that mistake it efforts us all. We need more black leadership, our Black Men are going to prison by the numbers, in the schools the children that are recieving low test scores are helping to build the prisons. It is up to us to stop unite and get it together, parents need to be more involved in the schools, if you are not working there is no reason why your behind is not involved in your childs school. STOP THE MADNESS. We view the world like it owes us something, when in tale we owe it to ourselves to take a long LOOK IN THE MIRROR and start to really believe we were once great Kings and Queens and once your mind take hold there will be no stopping what God himself has planned for our future.

Blessings everyone. Feel free to pass the Love around.

Dr. Boyce your short bus left a long time ago. You are so behind its not even funny. People like sell black folk in the dream that some magic negro is going to solve all of our problems. You are failing your black people Dr. Boyce. Please people stop wasting your time listening to Boyce, Sharpton and the likes. Your are a proud people. Obama can not teach us to support black owned businesses or to stop killing each other. Every town I know has a library which contains books in them. Inside these books are words which unlike the doors to knowledge and knowledge is power.

Learn economics, learn about the political system in this country, stop flocking to Gov. jobs. Invest in stocks bonds gold silver. Thats how people attain wealth. Not by more food stamps. Obama and his camp know you have no place else to vote because you depend on Gov. NFL and NBA players make six figure salaries, so does little Wayne and the like. Where is their money going to. Why don’t you harass them for jobs.

You my friend are an idiot. I know plenty of people that worked hard and lost their jobs thru no fault of their own. I know of a black lady who has a master’s degree and still looking for a job. you should count your blessings instead of tooting your own horn and putting people down. you may find yourself without a job one day.

    Where’s your picture?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

You might be missing the point here. This is not about begging for a handout. You are FORCED to pay taxes on damn near everything you do in this world, don’t you think you should have some say in how that money is spent? You are obviously on point about supporting black owned businesses, but even in that, you are asked to give up a portion of your earnings to fund a government that is more than willing to make life a bit more fair to other groups while neglecting those same needs for Black people. Now to be honest, I don’t vote for any of these bums and therefore I don’t expect/want anything from them except the ability to go about my daily business of taking care of myself with little friction. However, there are people that have a vested interest in the way Government is run and Dr. Boyce is simply saying if you do have that interest, stop being afraid to speak up, and stop childishly labeling others who are willing to.

All the things you mention (investing in stocks, bonds, gold and silver) can be nice mechanisms to keep pace with inflation, but I wonder if you even realize that those games are ALSO rigged and a lot of the people that Obama rubs elbows with are at the root of that as well.

Lastly, why should NFL, NBA, Little Wayne and others be responsible for employing anyone?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/itsawrap1911/ itsawrap1911

Its funny…I read stuff like this and I wonder do these educated people actually pay attention to the going on in Washington? Tavis, Cornel, now this. I mean it reads nice and all but its not put into context. What can our president do? I kept reading about his failing polices in the article but the present doesn’t make policy, he provides direction, the congress makes policy. And this congress is not willing to follow the presidents direction. Usually a president sets an agenda, his party in the congress writes law to enact it, and the minority party, adds amendments to that policy, so that they can get what they want out of it, even if they really don’t agree with it, our government works. BUT when Obama was elected his opponents decided they no longer wanted government to work. You had a minority republican senate that filibustered EVERYTHING so that NONE of the policies that would help the average American would pass, so you know they not going to let the stuff that would help us pass. Obama was able to get a few things through when they still had a filibuster proof majority but that ended at the beginning of 2010…now everything the dems are able to pass HAVE to be so stripped down that they dont really help black folk…and we are supposed to be mad at him for that…come on now…Yeah these educated men are going to get more hits and more attention by calling out the president but this aint helping the real issue. One thing I can say about the the Tea Party is they did things the only way you can make change…they got organized…they got loud…and they didnt go after the people they liked…they went after the people they didn’t like, they went after the president, harry reid, Nancy, and other dems in the house. Black folk act like inauguration day was it, and from then on out our problems were going to be solved by “Barack the magic Negro” to quote the Tea Party. If black folk are really angry about this, do the same thing…get organized…get loud…and go after these republicans that are really the cause of these problems…go after the do nothing coward democrats…but dont continue to do what we as black people always do…which is turn on each other and take down our own…the Tea Party would never do that.

Both of you are wrong, when President Obama was elected Black people were so hopeful when he became president; you must have thought racism would be over or something only to find out three years later that “Black unemployment rose to 16.7 percent – twice as high as it was when Obama assumed office”. Of course, this problem was not created by President Obama, but when he was running for office his campaign slogan was change you can believe in. President Obama talks more about children, the military, and healthcare than anything else, none of which have anything to do with the economy. He is a good speaker, but he has used diversionary tack ticks to keep peoples’ minds off of the real problem, unemployment. Black people talk about President Obama hopefully as if they really are not politically educated on his economic achievements. Sister how dare you, I am a Black father whose children are by the same woman and I have helped raise both of them. You dam right the government is responsible for my unemployment. I have a bachelor’s degree and you think the government is not responsible for unemployment. I have been looking for job every day for over two years and I’m supposed to be lazy? I have a bachelor’s degree, I wait everyday for a chance to go back to work, but Black unemployed is 16.7 and that’s my fault. You take responsibility sister and learn how to stop hating Back men, how many baby daddies do you have?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Money_C211/ Money_C211

Exactly how can a president target blacks to be employed more than other races? What makes you think by not supporting Obama that the next president whom most likely will be a Republican do better to decrease the black unemployment rate? Look into breaking down the unemployment rate and see the background of the individuals to see if there is a consistent link between them, such as no higher education, criminal records, etc.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/alpha111906/ alpha111906

The rich get rich(er) by not sitting around complaining all day. They get rich(er) by making Washington work for them. They get rich(er) by not assuming the POTUS is the King of the world. This is a three branch FEDERAL government. Obama is not responsible for your health or education. Obama is not responsible for your resume. Obama is not responsible for your job interview. Obama is not responsible for your lack of ambition. Every position in the government is arbitrary. Not one bill or speech by the FEDERAL government will effect the economy in the long run. The economy is made of people. Not machines. People like you make me sick. Get off your lazy butt and make a change if you think you know everything about the economy or what Obama is or isn’t doing.

The last time I checked, there were 535 members in the house of congress (legislative branch = makes laws)….1 President (executive branch = EXECUTES laws) and 9 Justices (judicial branch= interprets laws). The constitution establishes balance of power and individual states rights. This means that the president is powerless on economic matters without a compromise from the House. The last time I checked, this wasn’t the United States of Black People. We are still the minority. The Majority is going to establish AND push their agenda. If you want to make a difference, get a movement going to push (Y)our agenda. Get out to vote. You can also introduce bills. Yes YOU as an ordinary citizen can introduce bills.

YOU as an ordinary citizen can create your own job. YOU can get a grant or a loan and start a business. YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT FOR OBAMA TO HIRE YOU. Obama can’t make the companies hire you. The company is going to hire if it is in the best interest of the company. The company is not going to hire you just because you are out of a job. The company is not going to hire you just because the Fed lowered interest rates. The company isn’t going to hire you just because they pay fewer taxes. You have to make yourself marketable. Sitting on blogs all day and complaining is not getting you that job. It isn’t helping black people. It makes you look like a loser.

By blacks showing that we are not dumb enough to ride with Obama because he is black, and by showing that we are not dumb enough to always ride with the democratic party, we might be able to gain leverage like the gays, jews, and latinos do. If you noticed Obama was able to do things for them, why not us? And he is the first colored president, dont you see the irony???

He is half white half african ( his dad is from Kenya) who was raised by his white sometimes racist grandma in hawaii, how can u related to that? He is not the decendant of slaves like we are. He has passed agendas for ever race except ours, you can blame the tea party if you want too, but they are not the real problem, the problem is the political system, democrats and republicans and there supporters so actually you are part of the problem and dont even realize it. New York Fed names 2 new directors

    (AP) – 6 days ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said Thursday that two business leaders will join its board of directors to replace outgoing members.

The bank said Glenn Hutchins, 55, co-chief executive of the Silver Lake private equity firm, will replace Jeffrey Kindler. That term will run until December of next year. Kindler was CEO of drugmaker Pfizer Inc. until the company’s board ousted him under pressure from investors in December.

Macy’s Inc. CEO Terry Lundgren, 59, will serve the rest of the term vacated by General Electric Co. CEO Jeffrey Immelt, who in January became chairman of President Barack Obama’s jobs and competitiveness council. The term ends in December.

Both directors are “Class B,” meaning they were elected by the Fed’s member banks to represent the public on the board. Other classes of directors are elected to represent the interests of banks. The two board seats have been empty for months. Immelt left the Fed board in March, while Kindler left the board in December.

Bank President and CEO William Dudley said Lundgren and Hutchins bring important knowledge about retail and technology. Hutchins sits on the board of software company SunGard Corp. and is a director of the technology-heavy trading exchange, NASDAQ OMX Group Inc.

Lundgren has been in the retail business since 1975 and became Macy’s CEO in 2004.

As a person who has been around the world 3 times and understand how governments work, you are exactly correct. This is not about political parties against each other, this is and always has been about money. The only president who tried to turn the political steering wheel was JFK. Persident Obama has fallen victim to the establishment, the rich. All politicians do for their financial supporters, not for the voters. Political supporters pay large sums of money and provide financial favors to politicians. Once elected, those in office are in debt to them, not the voters.

    Panther,
Again what exactly can any president do that can specifically target blacks to getting employed without discriminating other races?? How can a president force private companies who to hire? With republicans in the house and senate with the power to block any legislation by Obama do you really think it would pass? The president needs to provide guidance that helps the hiring for all Americans, not just one race. If he came out with speeches just to create jobs for blacks only, then the chances of a 2nd black president would be slim to none because the white folks whom does more of the voting in this country anyway would only think this black candidate is only going to look out for the blacks if elected. Blacks need to start taking responsibility for some of this mess themselves, if you’re unemployed don’t just wait for the government to put something in place to get you hired, market yourself get some more job skills.

I like Dr. Boyce but this is where he loses me. I see Asians and Arabs, a smaller minority than we are, quietly building their economic resources and cultural imprint since they don’t have the strength of numbers like whites to frankly, demand what some conservs would term “handouts” and “bailouts” but a finance professor encourages us to put most of our chips in demanding government alone fix our problems. Face it, aid to black folks in almost any substantial form is a political third rail as far as the white working class has always been concerned. I agree, we can and should request help but only after we have identified a solution to centuries of educational, skill and financial underdevelopment we only began to shake in the 60s. We now have grown men with crim records and few skills that translate in the new IT driven economy. Priority one must be the end of “gangsta” and “bling” culture and all the misgivings our young carry about getting an education. Unless you’re dealing with the internal neglect of our so-called rich and the failures of black communities (and Dr. Boyce) to champion financial literacy versus attack Obama, you’re blowing hot air.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/About-Dat/ About-Dat

That’s too hard, they think they can curry favor with racists and win some more chips. What they don’t understand is all groups except blacks came (willingly) to this country in search of wealth and they organized culturally among themselves first or became “white” to get access to it. Our road to success must be different. We must change the cultural perception of black people before we will be taken serious. They apparently think racism died with Dr. King. They won’t tell you what the black community or what they personally can do, only what Obama can do (all by himself).

Thank you. It’s basic Govt 101, basic Soc 101. They don’t get it. They stand united, defiant and loud and conveniently ignore their contradictions. You have Negroes on here arguing incessantly about white conservative issues like those issues are issue 1 in our communities. The good news is 90% of our folks get it, the 10 people who make the rounds on here don’t rep our masses. Thank heavens!

  • Fred Bauer

Didn’t the TEA Party argue that these very things would happen under Obama’s policies? They will certainly not fault you for complaining about the economy, especially the lack of opportunity. Maybe it’s time to look around and ask yourself if they were right. Maybe it’s time to ask where the minorities have the most opportunity and what party dominates those areas.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VYSZEAH3KFNRUCZGTJ6KOQHKYU TellsItLikeItIs1234

Maybe if the black community wised up and stopped the mass exodus of black children dropping out of high school they might find those numbers will decrease. How much responsibility should the rest of the country, meaning the taxpayers, have to take over a decision that is entirely in the hands of the parent(s) of these kids? You cannot get ahead when you drop out of high school. Job opportunities are tight enough for people with experience, skills, and advanced education. A high school drop out has eliminated his/her choices with that one decision. A 30% graduation rate, or a 70% drop-out rate in most urban areas among black students is a drag on the local economy and the state in which they live.

Stop making excuses and start demanding black parents keep their kids in school.

  • Andonia Papastathis

This article is just scraping the top of a much larger issue. The real issue is why aren’t black folks doing anything to improve their own situation. Why are 1 in 4 black men in prisons? Why are black women two times as likely to have a college degree than black men?
Yes, black men and women need to take to the streets of Washington and let their voices be heard. But they also need to take to the streets and take advantage of the opportunities available to them…like getting an education, either through books or hard work, in order to improve their own situation.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pantherg08/ pantherg08

This is beyond job skills do you really think that so many black people out of work is because they dont possess job skills? Whites are never going to vote for a colored presient again anyway so whats wrong with the first colored president to make a impact specifically for us? He has done for other races and groups but not ours is that not discriminating against us? Do you know what he could have done, yes it would be controversal but our circ**stances are unique, he could have done something about illegal immigration which would free up jobs for our people, he could have tried to do something about the unfair drug laws in this country that has had so many of our people stuck in the system, if he wasnted to try something that would really work he could have tried to fight for some kind of reperations in the form of free college. I know wht your gonna say that he could not do that but the Indians got them right? Yes black people need to take responisbility, but we also need to realize if your going to play this politial game you have to play it right, and riding with the democrats all the time is not the way to play it. Im not for either party, hell I beleive the whole system needs to be destroyed, both parties are in it for themselves but people wanted real change, real action must be done.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pantherg08/ pantherg08

There are just as many racist democrats as republicans! If we wanted to really be taken seriously, then when need to stop being so predictable and politically ignorant. I know all about our black struggles through this contry just like you do, but im not blind either. Also to add to your point Obama is not black, his people were not brung to this country like our people were so im glad you realize that Obama is not one of us at all!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=20102823 Derrick Witherspoon

That sounds like something a racist would say. Are you a racist?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/About-Dat/ About-Dat

If we want to be taken seriously, we need to stop being naive about the power of racism in politics. You talk about post ’60s elections minus the”realignment” election, so that’s why you hold your position. I don’t put faith in political parties but one side is paternalistic, the other is pathological. We had 5 years of the Great Society, and 40+ years of right leaning politics so it does make a difference. Also, sorry to tell you, historically whites don’t see “light skin, dark skin, you’re from Africa, you’re from Chicago” they see BLACK. Sean Bell was NYC American “black”; Amadou Diallo was West African “black”. When the cops shot them to death, they didn’t ask for birth certificates.

Excellent article. However, what is the best method in which to get the message across. Marching? There must be a better way. I believe one of the must underappreciated (overlooked) aspects of the black experience in America is our numbers. Yet, I think of the Spartan 300 and realize you can do large things with small numbers (minus the killing).

“How much responsibility should the rest of the country, meaning the taxpayers, have to take over a decision that is entirely in the hands of the parent(s) of these kids? …” TellsItLikeItIs1234

Exactly. I live in a NYS upstate town (full of colleges) but yet full of “poverty.” I can not help but think that the whites in charge WANT/NEED black folks on Section 8, Welfare, Food Stamps, WIC because it increases their monetary budgets and beefs up their political resumes.

This city just hired a school superintendent at $250k+ but children at her previous district and this new district graduate at a 30% level. Mind you the median salary for this city is $30,000 a year.

This same city gives out Section 8 housing/welfare to young girls as young as 17 (with baby) which does not HELP the community in any shape or fashion because it fosters crime, immobility and just plain ignorance.

This same city is so into entitlements that parents don’t have to buy school supplies and bookbags, they are provided by social programs. They don’t even have to buy Christmas presents because those too are provided by social programs.

This same city is small but crime ridden, gang ridden, drug ridden and soon to become a chocolate city. Yet, the democratics and folks like Boyce want to tell you that you deserve more entitlements from the government.

This needs to stop. Every entitlement is not a gift from God, rather a noose.

I’m a older white guy who has watched our nation go from a kind of nice place to live to one where vitriolic discourse is more the norm than the exception. I can’t say that I ever fully trusted politicians. If I did, then my multiple trips to Vietnam and the proclamations from inside the Beltway corrected my naivety. Truth became more of a gray area to more of a clear black and white statement.

And I truly hate feeling this way about my own country.

Biased political commentary and “mis-speaking” seem to be accepted as the norm. My God, it just gets worse. We can’t pray, we can’t say the Pledge of Allegiance, we “can’t tell” until Washington tells us it’s okay and heaven forbid we attempt to protect the homeland. PC is a dagger in everyone’s back. Dialog is squashed and big brother is all around. This is Saturday. My bank has used every communication device to track me down about “unusual” spending habits on my debit card. They froze my account and cancelled my card to protect me. Now don’t get me wrong. I really do appreciate their zeal in protecting both of us from fraudulent activity. But I can’t help wonder just what it was about that $19 charge at a Chinese take away that set the crime squad in action. Even I like to clog my arteries from time to time.

Just my wandering thoughts after reading this commentary. The message wasn’t the reason for my interlude here. It was the civility that shocked me. Thank you for supplying comments without forcing my blood pressure beyond the stratosphere.

Ha,ha,ha,wake up??? What a joke ?? Black’s on a large scale like to be sleep, abused and dumbed down by the racist.distorted media. Then have the nerve to wonder why it keep’s happening over and over. How many years this slave type abuse has been going on and black’s on a mass scale still don’t get it.Black’s on a large scale were souled out during the 60′s were set up to be put in the current condition of being enslaved to an outdated slave type paradigm of dependence upon racist, eurocentric world wide domination and control. It’s a wonder ole massa has not pull the plug completely on the existist of black people in this country.A vast % percentage only option has become ? We are living in the last days. That is the same ole spookism, boogie man trick, ole massa would always play on ole darkie slave from long time ago.Yall’s negra’s bettaran be’s good, cause god and ole jesus going to get you and might cause me to beat yall every day instead of just on weds. All black’s have to do for real freedom is stop watching tv and buying all this slave type junk from china and start going to good will and buy everything used they can get their hands and just start from scratch and stop chasing after some materialistic america dream turned nightmare.

Painful and poignant to read. But I’m sorry to say that your journey in the future will be painful; because you are going to need to come to some very painful realizations. For example, you will have to acknowledge that the state of the black family is bankrupt; it’s bankrupt because of government programs which incentivized its bankruptcy. Black males are not encouraged by the black community to value education, or to value marriage, or to value fatherhood and parental responsibilities. Black males have been incentivized through government and social/cultural influences to remain the perpetual adolescent, jive-talking and mimicking cheap mafia imitations and street thugs! I’m sorry to say that the coming “growing up” period will be painful and traumatic for ALL of us. When flash mobs of black youth encouraged to think they are ENTITLED to their own personal rage take that misguided and bankrupt attitude into the community, the rest of us will suffer too. They are not entitled to their rage in the least, but truth is the first victim in propaganda wars. Think of it: Courageous men and women put their lives on the line in the last century–PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE–for these street thugs who gather to victimize people because they aren’t given MORE from government? They have EVERYTHING, because their BETTERS from earlier generations worked so hard for them; what do they do to repay those better angels of the black community? They drop out of school, show their asses in droopy drawers, gather in mobs to victimize others, and complain that the government isn’t giving them something more. And, to see adults in the black community cheering them on with arguments here? It’s patently pathetic. Black women long ago grew up, got an education, moved on, left their men behind in large numbers. They had responsibility for their CHILDREN after all. But they have been raising those children alone for 5 generations now. It’s not working out so well anymore, is it? The Black Community needs to stop the madness. Incentivize black families, education, and parenthood, not more government jobs programs. Stop feeding the insanity, when it is only destroying the black community. During the 20s, 30′s, 40s, the black family survived because they recognized family as the core unit, not the government. Those families nurtured a generation of leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They fought for black equality; now you’ve got it. What are you doing with it, except demanding government give you something?

A well-thought-out and mostly correct post. However, “Barack the Magic Negro” is not a construct of the so-called Tea Party.

Rather, “Barack the Magic Negro” is a term first applied to then-candidate Obama by movie and culture critic David Ehrenstein in a Los Angeles Times op ed column of March 19, 2007. According to Ehrenstein, the “magical Negro” is a non-threatening black hero in the popular media, usually the cinema, who was invented to ease feelings of white guilt over slavery and racial injustice. He is noble and devoid of sexual motives, and appears suddenly, out of nowhere, to magically solve the problems of white people.

We must stop blaming the “Tea Party” for virtually everything. In fact, people of all colors participate in the Tea Party Movement – which is not, by the way, a political party. It is rather a way of thinking, and it is a way of thinking which concurs with everything else you have written in your post.

Easy to blame the one may at the top without accounting for the obstructionism from the other side.

I don’t blame Obama for the black plight. I blame us as a people who turned out to vote for him as President, but didn’t take the time to vote in mid term elections. That’s given us the Tea Party. If we want better results from the process, we have to be engaged in the process.

While the numbers for whites are better, they aren’t by any means “good”. Just better than ours. The fact is, the tide has only risen for the rich whites. Everyone else is in a holding pattern with us.

Lets put it in perspective. Do we believe that our chances are better with the individuals who want to curtail Social Security, unemployment benefits, Medicare and Medicaid in the White House.

If we want better from our President, we need to be better ourselves. We can’t get any of our agendas advanced without giving him the tools he needs to move forward on his initiatives.

  • http://www.facebook.com/thunda.man1 Thunda Man

We should be worried about who would replace him if he doesn’t return. None of these Right Wing idiots are fit for the position.

And none of them have the Black community on their radar.

Specific recommendations that can actually pass through this Congress and become law?
    1. Presidents aren’t Kings
    2. Presidents can’t change local ills (both government and personal)

Easy to complain, but what would you do? Easier said than done.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/juicygirl580/ juicygirl580

We are in a sad state, but we also have to remember that blacks were in a sad state long before the 2008 election. Black people have have been in a sad state since we were brought to this country as slaves. The president is not here just for us because he’s black. He’s here for every body that’s fallen down. You have to remember he did not grow up with a silver spoon either. He had an absent black father ( that later past away) and came from a single mother household like so many of us who have struggled and made it or struggled and are still struggling. There is a serious war in this country between the haves and the have not’s and the division is greater, because there are serious economic conditions that were inherited and that worsened when the stock markets fell again and again and again. Not to mention the European market impact. The wake up call is now that there are over 14 million people out of work – a great deal of them happen to be white so the panic is on. You see there have always been a large percentage of unemployed black people. You just did not here it in the media over and over. Nobody wanted to talk about that not even black media.

The philosophy that Republicans have proven over and over is that they will not support the President in any fashion. It does not matter if he comes up with a great idea, their idea, or Abraham Lincoln’s idea – they want him out of office so that they can go back to the way Bush was doing everything – and we all know how that ended. The non-support of the President is what is hurting the unemployed and poor, but we are not the only ones that are poor now. White folks are on tv everyday talking about living in their cars, sleeping in shelters, being evicted, only eating one meal a day – something that people of color are exposed to everyday.

And businesses have always hired people because of tax incentives, so people will be hired at $4000. a pop + other tax write off’s. But as of today the republicans said no to that too. They don’t want to invest money to make money in anything that has to do with Obama. So no one will be hired until the house signs the bill. They want to take away medicare and medicade. This will impact so many minorities – not to mention our community’s seniors and children. Right now Obama is the only one on our side! None of the blacks that have been in office for years have been pushing any kind of agenda to bring jobs to our communities and you see that the republicans are definitely not putting anything on the table to even help their own. As the comment below states, unless you have your own ambitions to do something for yourself – then you will be sadly left behind thinking that somebody was suppose to do something for you and they didn’t. The person that is trying to do something – you are killing the messenger!
