OK, here’s the good news:  The Economy has turned the corner.  Our nation created 162,000 new jobs this month, leading to the first period of substantial job growth that we’ve had in a year.  The unemployment rate has remained stable at 8.8 percent….wait….sorry, that’s the unemployment rate if you are white. If you’re black, then that means that you’ve signed up for the “Negro Unemployment Package,” which means that your unemployment rate actually went up from 15.8 percent to 16.5 percent, nearly double that of white Americans.  If you are a black male, you will find that your unemployment rate has risen at an even more dramatic pace, from 17.8 percent to 19 percent.  But don’t worry – you’ve got a black president, and he’s certainly not unemployed….at least not yet.

Most of those who read my articles know that I am not a fan of unconditional Obama-bashing. I praised President Obama’s work on health care and I’ve loved the way he’s been sticking it to the Republicans over the past three months.  I have also fought against disingenuous attempts to undermine his presidency, being led by Tavis Smiley.

Click below to view GALLERY: The Unemployed

But enough is enough, and one thing that President Obama absolutely MUST do is stop acting as if black unemployment is going to be reduced when he takes steps to help the entire economy.  The idea that a “rising tide raises all ships” is as illogical as Ronald Reagan’s theory of “trickle down economics.”  In his fundamentally-flawed approach to helping urban America, Reagan argued that if businesses were supported with tax cuts and subsidies, this money would “trickle down” to the poor.  Reagan obviously knew very little about how capitalism works, because companies aren’t going to trickle down anything if they don’t have to.

RELATED: Obama: “We’re Beginning To Turn The Corner” On Unemployment

By embracing economic policies which presume that racial inequality isn’t a priority, President Obama is creating a huge Achilles Heel for himself within the African American community.  While Obama doesn’t have to endorse the idea of specifically targeting jobs toward the black community, he could aim resources toward the communities that have been hit the hardest.

Obama must also do something for black teens, who are facing an unemployment rate of over 40 percent (nearly twice as high as white teens).  I would love to see him make use of funds for job training, the creation of green empowerment zones, and supporting small businesses who may want to hire these youth.  The bottom line is that whatever the president and his advisers are doing right now, it is simply not working.

RELATED: Unemployment Rate Held Steady In March As Employers Added Jobs

I want to see President Obama succeed, and I am even willing to allow him to play the games that he’s been playing.  While listening to a presidential historian on the radio today, I was firmly convinced that publicly targeting his initiatives toward African Americans would hurt Obama’s ability to get re-elected.  At the same time, the president must send a clear signal that he and his team are interested in helping those who are suffering the most during this recession.  Black unemployment, even in the best of times, is as bad as white unemployment in the worst of times.  This has got to change.

On January 21st, Lloyd Blankfein left a peculiar voicemail message on the work phones of his employees at Goldman Sachs. Fast becoming America’s pre-eminent Marvel Comics supervillain, the CEO used the call to deploy his secret weapon: a pair of giant, nuclear-powered testicles. In his message, Blankfein addressed his plan to pay out gigantic year-end bonuses amid widespread controversy over Goldman’s role in precipitating the global financial crisis.

The bank had already set aside a tidy $16.2 billion for salaries and bonuses — meaning that Goldman employees were each set to take home an average of $498,246, a number roughly commensurate with what they received during the bubble years. Still, the troops were worried: There were rumors that Dr. Ballsachs, bowing to political pressure, might be forced to scale the number back. After all, the country was broke, 14.8 million Americans were stranded on the unemployment line, and Barack Obama and the Democrats were trying to recover the populist high ground after their b***h-whipping in Massachusetts by calling for a “bailout tax” on banks. Maybe this wasn’t the right time for Goldman to be throwing its annual Roman bonus orgy.

Not to worry, Blankfein reassured employees. “In a year that proved to have no shortage of story lines,” he said, “I believe very strongly that performance is the ultimate narrative.”

Translation: We made a s**tload of money last year because we’re so amazing at our jobs, so f**k all those people who want us to reduce our bonuses.

For Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., retirement probably can’t come soon enough. After the latest round of compromises, capitulations and castrations of the Senate financial reform bill, it’s looking increasingly clear that Dodd is simply no longer willing to fight for real reform, assuming he ever was to begin with.

Dodd’s latest effort at creating a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency would render the regulator utterly powerless, but it’s not the only issue Democrats appear willing to sacrifice to Wall Street campaign contributions. Right now, just about every other major element of the so-called Wall Street overhaul seems headed for disaster.

It is not up to the government to fix anything for black people. It is up to the private sector to hire, and the private sector won’t because Obama is black. The private sector will treat black people the same way it has for the longest. Black people spend 1.2 Trillion in America each year. It is time for blacks to be more entrepreneurial and to circulate their wealth back into their communities instead of relying on whitey to give them a job. Whitey is only going to lay you off and will hide behind a euphemism. Equal opportunity does not exist in America.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Monte_Brown/ Monte_Brown

I did not vote for Obama. I would not vote for Obama, but I will not blame him for what has been going on in this country for the longest. Obama simply can’t fix institutional racism. That is asking too much. What is he going to do? Say a great speech? Fire and Ice.

    @Monte_Brown
I agree with you. We can take control of things if we would stick together. We are so quick to cut each other down. I am college educated black man with 2 businesses and I get very little business from blacks. In the poor black areas, it seem drugs have taken over as the main source of making money. And it is killing us. It seem black men feel if they can’t be a rap/singer or a football/basketball star, the next opening is a drug dealer. Now Obama can’t solve this issue. We have to. We have to support black businesses in the community. I read Black Enterprise Magazine and I see a lot black doing a lot of wonderful things and it need to spread everywhere and not in certain locations. That why i am not looking for Obama to solve our issue. We have to set up and show that we can better.

I’m sorry, I am so sick and tired of the black community shoving all of our problems on Obama. When has it ever been required of a president to do anything specifically for the black community? Just because we have a black president does not mean we need put all of the problems we face in our community on his shoulders. When will we as a people start to take responsibility for ourselves and stop looking for others to do for us? By the way the last time I read the constitution no where did it say that the president’s job was to cater to the black community.

Obama has an agenda for the Palestinians, the Israelis, Gays, Immigrants, but no agenda for the most marginalized population in this country(along with the Indigenous People). That is because we gave him a pass and didn’t demand anything and still don’t demand anything. We were just happy to have a black face in the white house(still doing the bidding of Imperial white power). And when we do make demands, Black folks jump up and say “he’s not the President of Black people, he’s the president of America”- Bullsh!t.

We have been making demands of this country since slavery and we’re expected to stop just because we don’t want to make Obama uneasy?

Me personally, I am and always will be Pro-Independence for Our People. There is no future in remaining subjects of the U.S. government. We are an internal/domestic colony in this country. This country is going down yet we want to stay onboard. It’s foolish. But I understand the mindstate of the oppressed. Harriett Tubman tried to get Africans to leave the plantation but many didn’t want to leave. Masta provided food, clothing, shelter(as meesed up as it was). They feared the unknown. They were so used to being dependent on Masta, that they didn’t have faith in themselves.

Africans are the Mothers and Fathers of Civilization. We built this country. Not just by picking cotton, but by designing the capital and white house, creating all kinds of inventions, showing the slavers how to till the earth, raise cattle, etc, etc. We have the talent and skills, but we have been so oppressed that we don’t believe in Ourselves anymore.

The answer to Our woes is Independence. We tried integration and look were it has gotten us. NOWHERE. We are worse off then we were 50 years ago.

If you are serious about the upliftment of Black/African People and want a future for your children and their children,Check out: http://asiuhuru.org/

I don’t think it’s the president’s job to take care of black people as population. Bush didn’t. Clinton didn’t and so many others. PEOPLE are unemployed in America and Canada as a whole, so the president and prime minister of those respective countries need to do something about umemployment. With respect to black people though, i think we can all agree that black people need to do more to help themselves! go to school, get an education, build a strong social network within the black community and beyond and strive for employment not just to be an athelete, rapper or trapper. i know it’s cliched out, but y’all know it’s true. we should not expect the president to do that for us when we as a people barely lift our own hands to do anything for ourselves other than hate on everything and everybody who does not agree with us or buy the latest clothes, weaves, jewels, shoes, and cars. GET IT TOGETHER!

Majestik7 is the only person on this thread that is making sense. This is what Black people have turned into in the millenium? All of you can make excuses for the president all day with “he’s the president of America” if you want to but, why didn’t anybody respond to the fact that many groups in America such as gays, Latinos, etc got help from Obama but he won’t deal with blacks? Today’s black people are just too fat, dumb, and happy to deal with when it comes to getting disrespected. I blame your parents actually. Majestik7, hold it down. Later for these so-called educated Toms and Thomasinas.

    RESPECT bassman21!

When Our struggle to uplift Ourselves was at its height in the 60′s, the U.S. government sabotaged and destroyed it. Check out COINTELPRO, it is proven and doc**ented. Since the military defeat of Our Movement, the U.S. government has gone great lengths to keep us from ever getting that organized again. WE changed the entire social fabric of this country and the powers that be never want to see that happen again.

What we see happening since then ie, the illegal drug economy, police containment and terror, mass incarceration, lack of resources in Our communities, is all part of what’s called Counter-Insurgency. This is a War against a Peoples Movement for Liberation. It is no coincedence that crack and the all the other ills we face, started right after the military defeat of Our Great Movement. The purpose was to cause disorganization and demoralization. That is why we see that lack of Solidarity in Our communities. BUT it is OUR problem and WE WILL solve it. But we first must know how we got this way and who Our enemy is as well as allies.

The U.S. Government IS, ALWAYS HAS BEEN, AND ALWAYS WILL BE OUR enemy. No matter what Black face occupies the office of President. Obama is camoflage for white power/imperialism to carry on its business. I see it working everyday on this website. Black folks don’t question anything the Obama adminstration does. All we do is make up excuses for his imperial policies. OBAMA is worse than BUSH because at least under Bush we knew Amreica cared nothing about us. Now because we have Obama we think we have reached the promised land.

Don’t fall for the okey doke.

Respect and Peace to you, Majestik7! I know what’s up with Cointelpro and Blackdesk. I was a kid in that era. By the time people started understanding what was going on, a lot of people were locked up, split apart, or dead. These brainwashed morons will believe anything just to feel good. Like I said, Majestik7, I blame their silly parents. None of these people will protect themselves that’s why white Teabaggers are spitting on blacks and they don’t have a problem with that. They don’t read, that’s why they don’t know that their president has given money to others already. Oh, I forgot they will have to do research outside of their jobs, so they won’t do it. Hotep, Majestik

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Khalif2000/ Khalif2000

Actually, Black people need to do something about black unemployment. Do you want the President to pick out your clothes and take you to the job interview. Do you want him to erase every time some little knucklehead hollared “F School?”

He can’t. His new policy for blacks is “Pull your effin pants up, I wouldn’t hie you either.” Sure white people tend to suck, but white boys can’t get office jobs with tats and piercing and sagging jeans, why should you.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Monte_Brown/ Monte_Brown

Mita1364, Kissing whitey ass will get you nothing but fart in your face. I don’t care what whitey think, and what they think has no power over me. I am gainfully self employed. I earned my bread by the sweat of my brow and I’m eating. I don’t kiss no ones ass to get along with them, especially not whitey. There are as many black people on planet earth as their are white and even more so. We must build our own economies of scale and make what “whitey thinks” irrelevant. If you keep doing the same think over and over again and expecting different results, you are insane.

Brother, what the hell are you talking about? The Black people who are looking for work aren’t getting high. You have the nerve to bring up the KKK when you sound like a teabagging idiot yourself. We all know the community is in chaos, but what’s the solution. Also, most of the Black community voted for Obama, the least he could do is return the favor. Just like when the Moral Majority Christian Right voted Obama’s idol, Reagan into office. What did Reagan do, he looked out for his electorate. Do a little research.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

Okay now, what I am going to say might not agree with the black majority, but here it is. President Obama is the President of the United States, not the President for Black Americans in the United States.
He has to show that he is impartial to every racial group in this country. If you remember correctly, the majority that did vote for our first man of color as President was not the black majority. Not to say I am siding with other races but this man has to come off as an equal to all not just one group.
The economy and jobs are hurting every racial group out there. And this president is doing so much he can do and he has so much on his table from racist Republicans and tea baggers to the pro black front thinking he is not doing enough for black people.
This man has inherited one of the most damaged situations from the former president before him. President Obama is hard at work trying to help out all people!!!
Don’t get it all twisted thinking he is not doing enough for the so called black community.
Yes unemployment is so high that it is rampant and clearly the black people that are actively looking for decent work are not the ones commiting crimes, doing drugs and other ill refute things. It is just the job market is so bad that basically no one can find a decent job, this is not a racial thing but an economic thing!!!
Talk like this from our people will not have this President re elected in 2012 — DO YOU WANT THE OLD TYPE OF REGIME BACK IN POLITICAL OFFICE???
PEOPLE NEED TO BE SUPPORTIVE OF OUR PRESIDENT NOT KNOCK HIM DOWN BECAUSE PEOPLE THINK HE IS NOT DOING ENOUGH FOR BLACK PEOPLE!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cubsfan1973/ cubsfan1973

THIS IS FOR THE IGNORANT BLACK PEOPLE OUT THERE, I HOPE YOU HAVE A BRAIN AND COMMON SENSE TO SEE THAT THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS, BUT YOU HAVE TO EARN IT, NOT EXPECT ANY HANDOUT!!!

Fix the black job situation??? How about blacks fixing their own mentality about a job?

    Follow these commandments:

    1. No, the boss DOES TELL YOU WHAT TO DO as long as you are ON THE CLOCK.
    2. You do not have the same rights as veterans. When on a probationary period, ACT LIKE IT.
    3. Breaks are 15 minutes, lunch is 30.
    4. If you work in telecommunications, TURN YOUR RADIO OFF.
    5. Do not clock in, then go to breakfast. Work starts when you time in. It usually stops 10 minutes before timing out, not 30 to an hour before.
    6. Do not wear overly tight or sexy clothing to the office. No, we are not jealous. This is the workforce, not the bedroom.
    7. Taking off because ‘they made me mad’ only makes you look bad and hurts no one else but you.
    8. Personal conversations with co-workers should be done on breaks, not while customers are waiting for assistance.
    9. Yelling across the room is a No-No. You know your momma raised you better than that. There are other more subtle ways to get someone’s attention.
    10. DO NOT FEEL YOU CAN LOSE YOUR PROFESSIONALISM WHEN DEALING WITH OTHER BLACKS.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Monte_Brown/ Monte_Brown

Ediejones, you and some others are making it seem that all black people have bad work ethic and that is just not the case. The problem is not with the work ethic of black people it is the fact that blacks don’t control their dollars, yet they can if they shifted where they dropped those dollars. Stop trying to turn black people into suck ups. We are not white. We are not prone to that suck up mentality.

Black people should work towards building the BLACK ENTERPRISE. Ediejones, do us all a favor and just shut the f**k up. For real. You are sooo frigin gay. Shut up. Don’t tell people when to have conversations.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/odoggz/ odoggz

Obama doesn’t need to fix the black jobless issue, BLACK PEOPLE without jobs need to fix the jobless issue. Go back to school, take up a new skill, something. There is still money to be made, independently. If you can’t have this mentality, you’re not fit to survive. This is not Afghanistan, this is America, opportunity is everywhere if you just create it and get a hustle going. If you don’t put that fire to your own butt, you’re just asking for handouts, in my opinion.

I definitely agree with you on that and many other matters that you have bought up. With the same enthusiasm that we had while on the campaign trail i have thought to myself to promote the messages that you too have taken up under the banner of Justice,Equality Freedom all shallow sounds if nothing promotes these dynamics. I am a returning student of 55 a woman first and an observer of the same history that dooms us if we don’t pay attention to it. The fact does remain that our country culls from the most brilliant minds and they don’t look like you and I. I have kept my liberal roots but sometimes Conservative outlooks seem most stagnant and unrelenting to my senses. I do see a lot of your points but until our politicians and elected officials stop doing the ID(being greedy and selling out for causes that aren’t beneficial to us or our people that are in need) try to obtain their superego statuses we shall not prevail just food 4 thought my friends! I write articles about DC in Photos for Culture and Society in the Examiner and as soon as I promote an issue about the black community I get pulled over by channel execs this is the only way that our messages get through to those that do read and comprehend whats actually happening~ Wake up America everything is not ‘HUNKY DORRY”

I dunno. I wouldn’t have any problem if Obama came up with a way to help black unemployment. If it would really help black unemployment.

And that’s the real question. What exactly do you think he can do?

He has no money, for anything. So, spending is out of the question. Talking to employers? And say what, that they haven’t already thought of?

The government has no clue as to what ails America. So, looking to them for answers is utterly pointless.

The real answer is when you go to apply for a job, ask THEM!

What could I do, to help expand your business?

    LOL

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Monte_Brown/ Monte_Brown

Momono3, the next time you pay someone to do something and he takes you for a ride, don’t complain. If you want to take shot at work ethics, reflect on the bad work ethics of all races. Not all black people are how you describe them. You just don’t know how to hire the right black people. I’ve never been taken for a ride by a black person, but white people and other races try to do it whenever they get a chance. Come on now with the bulls**t. There are some self loathing people commenting on Black Planet.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/OthelloCyber/ OthelloCyber

XL_611, that doesn’t make any sense. What kind of Ayn Rand bull-pucky is that. The government has major sway over the economy. They set monetary policies and initiatives that directly effect our economy. Put it to you another way — if the government (particularly the military) didn’t build the internet and guys like Gore and McCain didn’t lead the charge to make it publicly accessible, Black Planet wouldn’t exist, Bill Gates and Steve jobs wouldn’t be worth half as much as they are now and the Google boys would be earning peanuts as math professors at Berkley. And don’t get me started on water facilities, the Homesteaders Act and many other government policies that have spurned economic growth.

If anything, the US government has bent over backwards to please Corporate America (and now global corporations) and have gotten little to returns.

The government doesn’t know what ails America?! WTF? That’s the government’s job — to fix big problems for the populace.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

I’ll tell you what doesn’t make sense. If the government was so all wise and knowing, why major financial institutions have a major collapse, every 10 years? Why did we go into a major recession, as of late? Why is social security in the red? Why does Congress have to borrow money to pay the interest on the deficits they run? Why do we have deficits in the first place? If they can’t generate the revenues for their spending programs, where do they get the idea they can borrow money to do it?

They have the capacity to tax every dollar in circulation. Yet, they can’t figure out how to pay for their programs. Other than to pretend someday they will.

THAT, is what the government is good at.

    LOL

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/momono3/ momono3

Montebrown, if the subject was ALL RACES,I would have commented on all races but it was not. The subject was the black job situation so that is what I commented on. And with you being self employed I don’t think you are even qualified to comment, unless you have hired all blacks and they do none of the thing I mentioned. But I highly doubt that, unless you are talking about blacks who work for Gates BBQ. Now those black people hustle for that black man, so do blacks who work for Russell Simmons, and that is because those two black men don’t play. They know how some blacks can be and they nip all that “back from break late, personal conversation going, bad attitude, non-professionalism” in the bud.

This is so true alot of black Men here in Michigan that want to work can’t seem to get hired and when its time to hire people its mostly all whites and one black and you know the black is not getting hire they just pick one to say face it a mess here they need to bring affirmtive action back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There could be a lot of reasons behind blacks not getting hired, instead of whites.

If an applicant feels very deeply that despite their qualifications, they’re not going to get hired because they are black, this might come through in the interview somehow,in some un-intended way.
They might show it in body or facial expressions, that they feel badly or are having negative feelings, somehow.

The interviewer might pick up on this “negative energy”, and that resonance might tell them any number of reasons for their negative feelings and never consider it might just be anxiety about their race.

Any sign of discomfort or difficulty expressing positive energy or what, is going to count against you and in a way neither the applicant or interviewer is consciously aware of.

And yeah, there are people out there who will use any excuse to exclude a black applicant.

But then the interviewer’s job is to find reasons to exclude as many applicants as possible and narrow it down to the one that gets hired….

    LOL
