I talk to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton on a regular basis.  In fact, I spoke to both of them on Sunday and Monday.  I have to start off by telling you this so you’ll know that my perspective on these two individuals might be a bit different from others.  I am never on board with everything that another person says, but I’ll admit that getting to know these men behind the scenes gives a point of view that others are not so quick to understand.

RELATED: VIDEO: MSNBC Reporter Mistakes Jesse Jackson For Al Sharpton

Let me explain:  You see, mainstream media has an issue with African American men, particularly unapologetic African American “leadership,” (whatever that means).  You probably can’t think of one strong African American advocate who has not been made into a clown or had his dirty laundry aired in public.  This is not because black “leaders” have more dirty laundry than others.  I argue that it’s because the media doesn’t protect the images of black public figures the way it does for their white counter parts.  If you dig into the past of almost any respected white “leader,” you would probably find a whole lot more dirt than the media has presented to the American public.  But when it comes to Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan, all bets are off.

With that said, I think it should be made clear that neither of these men are perfect, and neither was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  In fact, Dr. King died a very unpopular man and his heroic legacy was only restored after his death.  America has never loved black people who’ve pushed the envelope and forced America to look at itself in the mirror.  It is for their struggles and commitment to fighting for something greater than themselves that I will always respect Rev. Jackson and Rev. Sharpton.   In general, I believe in respecting my elders, for their contributions pave the way for the rest of us.

There are also deeper issues to consider in America’s fight for fairness.  One of the things I find most interesting is that people who complain about men like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton aren’t doing a damn thing themselves.  They will stare at the TV as armchair quarterbacks and complain about this and that, all the while, they aren’t doing anything to advance the causes that they expect their “leaders” to promote.  I get the emails every single day:

“We had a lady get shot in our neighborhood, and where was Jesse Jackson when that went down?  Naw, he was on TV making his money.”

“Al Sharpton wasn’t in California when the black man had his rent money stolen.  He only cares about himself.”

When I get these emails in my inbox (I get tons of them), my reactions to people are the following:

a) Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton nor anyone else can be in all places at once. Even when you travel constantly to do as much as you can (exhausting yourself in the process), there are still going to be incidents that you simply don’t have time to address.  The “Super Negro” Theory for Civil Rights must be abolished.

b) The person who is doing all the complaining in their email is usually doing absolutely nothing himself. So, my first response to the person who asks me why I’m not doing this or doing that is to say, “As soon as you send me a list of all the things you’re doing to help black people, I’ll send you a list of my own.”

My response is not meant to belittle the person’s comment or to attack them.  It is to remind them that this fight belongs to all of us, not just a few figure heads that we see on TV.  The Chicago Bulls were never a great team when the players stood around watching Michael Jordan take all the shots.  They were a great team when everyone got the ball and everyone played a role.  Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream doesn’t just live in a fantasy, it lives inside of you.  So, as you get tempted to complain about what others are and are not doing, or find yourself upset that their strategy doesn’t match the one you’d endorse, find the time to get involved in the fight yourself.  You might find that it’s far more difficult than you think.

I can’t front. Coming up in NY back in the days with Yusef Hawkins, the Central park jogger, and police brutality in general, Rev Al, Alton Maddox and C. Vernon Mason were the ONLY local voices that stood up. For that I will always have love for the Rev. However, I am troubled by his seemingly transition into the political arena, because it effectively hamstrings people who really want to truly fight for justice. Let me say, that I never agreed with Al’s tactic of civil disobedience, but the man did an admirable job of informing the grass roots about what was going on. Anyone who remembers WLIB and the Slave theater on Wed nights, knows what I’m talking about. unfortunately, Rev Al has become a shill for the Obama administration, which has caused me to lose a lot of respect for him. AT the end of the day, I know many of our people don’t like the man, but I will always respect him for his bold stance he took back in the late 80′s. Alton Maddox was unjustly, disbarred at the behest of Guiliani back in the day, because he used to murder these lawyers, and they didn’t want to tangle with him during the Tawana Brawley case. I urge EVERYONE to go read the overwhelming evidence against the officer and subsequent cover up in that case, and you will plainly see why Sharpton, Maddox and Mason were despised men back then.

    @BigWillyLandis

In their defense, all they are responsible for doing is making people aware of what’s going on.

@JazzWatch. I think the wrong approach is to see who will be greater than who. MLK is no longer here, and can’t do anything for us now. I would agree their role is not as strong as it once was, but I contend, that if MLK were here today, he would probably be just as marginalized. Trust me, if you look deeper into it, these men are a sign of black men in general. I defy you or anyone to name a black man who has stood up for us, who didn’t get smeared, discredited, maligned etc. We better stop falling for the tricks of our enemy.

Civil Rights 1st! Then those two SNAKES in the physical forms of Black Men! Who are those two CLOWN’S standing up for AND/OR speaking for? Me? You? Them? Us? I’ll be 53 years old, this upcoming April & I thank my god, I’ve learned NOT to believe in man & always a higher being! I feel so sad for the folk’s who BELIEVE they need, another to speak on their behalf, in a personal sense, outside of a professional Doctor or Lawyer, but Jessie & Al? Please. I tell young folk’s all the time, “One Does Not,” have to follow anybody, but can walk the road’s toward’s success with everybody else, going in that direction! All Jessie & Al EVER does is instigate, start-up doubt, point fingers 99-9% of the time it’s alway’s race bating, trying to Play Human Being’s against Other Human Being’s based on RACE! I hope Jessie & Al Fades away & disappear like a pimple off a fat man’s A** & if future so called, “Self Appointed/Self Ordained,” Thugs in Suits’ slither out, hopefully they won’t be given the time of day, yet attention like the ignorant, mislead, foolish a/k/a 4 generations of suckers I’ve seen making them shysters $Rich$ in the process! Sharpton & Jackson are TWO who should go down in history all right! AS THE BEST TWO CON-MEN OF THE MILLINIUM!!!

You know something, everybody is following somebody in this world. Even if you don’t openly profess it, some person’s perspective has appealed to you, and you have incorporated it as your own to some degree, no matter how much you deny it. Let me say this, during the Central Park Case, Rev Al conducted his own investigation, and from his interviews from the nurses that attended to the jogger that night, they said, that the jogger was in a state of shock, but claiming that her boyfriend was the one that did it. While all NY media were ready to lynch these young men, Rev Al was bringing the truth. These young boys were railroaded to the highest degree. None of the DNA matched these young men, yet they were convicted. Well we know the story, 10 years later it was conclusively proven that they were innocent. So who was guilty? It was easy to label 5 black kids from the projects out “wildin” and roaming the streets like a “wolfpack” Rev Al was the ONLY voice speaking on behalf of these young boys. Even that handkerchief head negro Charlie Rangel wasn’t touching this case. Al has been on the front line doing this type of work for DECADES. He did the same type of work exposing the inconsistencies in the Yusef Hawkins trial. Nobody else had the guts to do the same. Its not about following anyone, but if someone is advocating for you when your innocent, and EVERYONE else is turning their back on you, that man should be applauded, in my view!

I AGREE WHY IS PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT JESSE JACKSON AND AL SHARPTON… BE FOR REAL THEY ARE ONLY MEN… WHERE IS THE FAITH THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE IN GOD… GOD THAT IS WITHIN YOU THAT IS… IF GOD IS WITH YOU THEN WHO CAN STAND AGAINST YOU… THE COMFORTER LIVES WITHIN (INSIDE OF YOU), THAT’S YOUR PROTECTION AGAINST ALL WICKINESS…

_A_, Crispus Attucks, Nat Turner, these Brave heroes were great. and Al or Jesse cannot fill their shoes either……

The tricks are more prevalent since now the President is doing (or not) solving the problems that We haven’t done, except turn on each other…..

Farakahn is the closes to what I call a TRUE leader…..

Okay Dr. Boyce….whatever you say. The more I hear you and read what you write, the more I believe the saying, “BIRDS of a feather flock together.”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

@Jazzwatch. Crispus Attucks??????? You can’t be serious with that one. He fought one oppressor, so he could be exploited by another? Not sure what qualifies him as a “hero.” Brother Al was the ONLY voice exposing the NYPD and the DA’s office wickedness during the Central Park Jogger case. I don’t think people understand HOW flimsy the evidence was against these young boys. 10 yrs later, Rev Al was proven RIGHT! He gets no credit for that? There are many other examples that can be cited. Who boldly advocates now? This media has conditioned us to now see anyone who stands up on our behalf, as “pimps” “opportunists” etc. Do you people even realize, that the way you think now, you would have been saying the same thing about Elijah, Martin, Malcolm, Garvey. Nat Turner? We should recognize true history. Most negroes who rejected Martin to his face back in the day, are on the forefront during his celebrations today. See we ALWAYS take our cue from the ruling class. If they don’t like someone, they make us not like them. If they like him, we get swept up in their hysteria. Why the hell is Colin Powell revered among us? Look at the confused state we are in. We hate Bush for going to war in Iraq, but it was Powell, who came and LIED to us about the evidence. Of course, you people want to believe that Colin was a victim of lies as well. Don’t kid yourself, dude was the Secy of State, and a career military man, you ain’t gonna hoodwink him. He was on board with that high crime, yet we give him a pass, because the media does. Look how many negroes are under Obama’s spell. Ask the average person about his stimulus program, what’s in the healthcare bill or what our budget deficit is, they can’t tell you anything, because as long as he is a media darling, the masses will be with him. Keep your mind open though, if the media should turn on him, watch and see how many “BLACKS” follow suit, like the obedient servants that they are!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/i_admit_it/ i_admit_it

hafta agree with _A_ on this one…people so quick to down another man’s efforts, saying that he has expended none, when their own list of accomplishments is diminished by the fact that they have none…as i’ve said for three days now on different forums: instead of criticizing other people’s articles, how bout you start writing your own chronicling the improvements YOU’VE made to your community…we’re so quick to clown others while refusing to do a damn thing ourselves to help the problem…that is the definition of hipocrisy and laziness…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billg28/ billg28

My sentiments exactly! I could not have said it better. Many want to criticise Jesse and Al until they need their help. I believe a lot of the criticism of Jesse and Al by Black people is based on a “slave mentality” of not wanting to upset the white man. You may not agree with their tactics or viewpoints, but want are you doing to address conditions and situations that are unfair, unjust or racist?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Monte_Brown/ Monte_Brown

Jesse and Al better endorse Andrew Cuomo for Governor of New York. If not, then they will risk the state going red like NJ and Massachusetts. David Paterson is black, yes, but is he a good Governor? Hell the f**k nah. Endorse Andrew Cuomo so that the Democrats could actually win one. Geez, how hard is that. Also, forget about Harold Ford. He is from Tennessee. New Yorkers are not trying to vote for a country boy. Vote Kirsten Gillibrand. It just makes sense.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/n0gar/ n0gar

Monte_Brown: Fake ass white man. F**k Cuomo. What is this- dynastic Egypt? I don’t like supporting anyone who get’s the hook-up from who there father was. Let him make his own name. Negroes have been brainwashed into thinking that Patterson is no good because Jew York likes to make sure that mob groups (Italians and especially Jews) like to keep a hold on the state.

You say forget Ford because New Yorkers don’t vote for country people? You were dumb enough to allow Clinton in knowing she was just using NY to run for president – just like Bobby Kennedy. It goes to show that politics can’t be real if someone can choose a state and get the seat.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/n0gar/ n0gar

billg28: You said all that needs to be said on that. Too many negroes go along with the white thought because they are too afraid to have their own thoughts and they know when whites get mad – they get scared. They will never say that they are scared, but they are.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/samsthewon/ samsthewon

Sadly enough at this point Jesse and Al,are doing more for black people than President Obama, has.I know the president can only do so much.He especially can’t do a whole lot specifically for black people.Because if they’ll knock President JFK,out the box…and he’s a white man.You know what they’ll do to Obama.Everything short of lynching!I’ll alway’s give Jesse and Al props. They do try.

“…You see, mainstream media has an issue with African American men, particularly unapologetic African American MALES and FEMALES.”

“On point.” And many knee-gros will “side” with the euro-clowns that black people should not take the stance of being assertive. How sad. The euro-clowns will jump up and state that the bondage of our black people decades ago “has no bearing on THEM as well as the face of what we see today.” Bullchit. Moreover, how many joe-blow euro-clowns would “volunteer” to stand up and PUBLICLY proclaim en masse that racism is just plain WRONG? I’m waiting…um-hum. Just as I thought. Answer: none of them. Because they exist in a system that was predicated to benefit THEM. Whenever there is drastic change in the system of things, and the euro-clowns become “inconvenienced,” THEN change will come. Yet many of our own people support what are never-ending tactics to marginalize black people. We can be highly educated, yet the snake’s head of racism will ALWAYS be omni-present. And you have to think…what KIND of convoluted thinking is it when, in a survey presented in 2009, WHITE managers stated that they would “readily” hire a white male with a high school diplomas vs. a black male that is lettered?

So much for a post racial society. Racism never died or has taken a break. It has only been “dressed up” with mirrors and smoke-screens. Jesse and Al may not be deemed the “best” representation, but it definitely leaves me to think about the “old guard” elected officials that simply draw a pack-check yet little results.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cwm299/ cwm299

Democrats must love how Jesse and Al are out there supporting their KKK style gun-control. And, how they deliver the black vote to the “Party of the White Man”, of course they dropped that nickname to conceal their reality.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Take_it_all/ Take_it_all

    @ n0gar

I couldn’t have said it better than you did about Gov. Patterson. The racist media is literally pushing Patterson out of office to make room for that privileged son of Cuomo. It’s sad that the weak-minded black people have been brain-washed to think that Patterson is a bad governor.

The same way the media has brain washed our people to think that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are bad leaders for our community. They are not perfect but they still fight for our people. You weak-minded black people need to wake up and smell the coffee.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

@Jazzwatch. I understand that Crispus probably gave his life thinking it was going to help himself and his people out. But now you and I no that didn’t happen, why should we regard him as a hero? In my view, the hero is the one who fights for his own freedom, not for the freedom of others!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/furiousstyles1/ furiousstyles1

This is Bulls*&^, Al and Jesse are duplicitous, self serving, pitch men. They Cherry pick causes and lead the rhetoric when it serves a specific agenda. They have done nothing and can do nothing in teaching anyone self governance. They set forth absolutely no proactive agendas and only react after the fact in every situation. In short, they are useless.

Black men using the pulpit as its own cure to unemployment needs to stop. The NAACP is outdated and irrelevant and the fact that you mention “The Minister” Farrakhan in the same breath as the “Reverends” Al and Jesse is ludicrous. The Minister has done more to change his community and provide economic, spiritual, educational and political cover to African Americans than Al or Jesse ever have.

This isn’t an indictment of the men personally, as I do not know them personally. However millions of people can’t be wrong…race baiting, political and economic bullying for personal gain is not what Black people need in their future for truly equality.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BSKKXHJN5ZUKQWBKXLFQJCGDOY Mike

Sharpton is a race-baiting neanderthal. He defamed and slandered innocent individuals in The Tawana Brawley Hoax all for the purpose of appealing to ignorant, uneducated, gullible blacks who want to hate whites. He’s no different than a KKK leader fomenting hatred upon rural, uneducated whites in the Deep South in the 1950′s.
