Please show up to support Black Radio!!

TO MY RADIO ONE FAMILY:

The Honorable John Conyers, our 80 year old African-American Congressman is the sponsor of a new bill that could put many black owned radio stations out of business. And force others to abandon their commitment to provide free music, entertainment, news, information, and money losing formats like gospel and black talk.

This is Cathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One with an urgent call to our Radio Family.

The John Conyers Performance Tax Bill is the brain child of the foreign owned record industry who would receive at least 50% of the revenue that would be charged to radio stations in order for them to play music. The music that you now receive free from us – we would have to pay millions of dollars for.

And in the midst of this economic depression, black radio stations simply do not have that financial ability.

There has been only one hearing on the bill and that hearing did not have any black ownership representation. Black radio owners and community leaders including Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Dick Gregory, Tom Joyner, and myself have all begged Conyers to at least allow us the opportunity for a hearing. He has flatly refused.

We now ask you, our radio family, to assist us in saving the future of black radio. Please call or email or visit the offices of John Conyers today.

His phone numbers are 202-225-5126 and 313-961-5670 and his email address is john.conyers@mail.house.gov

TELL HIM that you oppose this bill that would murder Black owned radio and the free music that you now hear on all free radio stations. In the midst of an American economic recession, it is not the right time to send millions of dollars to foreign owned record companies that don’t even pay taxes like you and me in this country. This bill is not in the interest of Black people! Please help us save Black radio!

WANT TO LEARN MORE? See below why it is IMPERATIVE that we act to save Black radio:

1. The promotional value of free local radio airplay translates into significant revenues for artists and record labels:

  • According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), record sales in the United States in 2007 were approximately $10.4 billion;
  • Touring revenue in 2007 in the U.S. was approximately $5 billion;
  • The above figures exclude the several billion dollars derived annually from merchandise, songwriting royalties and licensing deals for commercials, films, etc.; and
  • Also excluded is the boost that U.S. popularity provides for foreign sales and concerts.

2. Local radio also actively promotes artists by:

  • Devoting considerable and valuable airtime to promoting artists’ concerts;
  • Featuring artist weekends
  • Providing opportunities for live in-studio performances; and
  • Creating buzz through on-air ticket and album giveaways, helping to drive concert and merchandising revenue.

Without doubt, the engine driving these billions of dollars into the pockets of the record labels and artists is free, local radio promotion.

Artist Examples of Increased Sales From Local Radio Airplay

Each of the next graphs details and compares the spins on over-the-air radio (highlighted in red on each graph) with the retail sales and downloads of the artists’ releases (highlighted in blue on each graph). The results are consistent in every artist example: Significant play on radio results in significant sales of the artist’s song, demonstrating the significant promotional and economic impact that free, local radio provides to the recording industry.

The recording industry suggests that the Internet and viral marketing is now the way to break a new artist.  However, despite numerous new methods for artists to showcase their music, such as MySpace.com, retail outlets, etc., radio’s promotional value in spiking and sustaining sales is clearly demonstrated by the information included below.

Kanye West

Kanye West is an American record producer and is a multiple Grammy Award-winning rapper and singer who rose to fame in the mid 2000s.

Albums

He released his debut album “The College Dropout” in 2004, his second album “Late Registration” in 2005 and his third album “Graduation” in 2007. His first three albums have received numerous awards (including nine Grammys), critical acclaim and commercial success. The first two singles from “Late Registration” sold over 860,000 copies in its first week, and earned him eight Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for the song “Gold Digger.” His first three albums have certified sales of three million, three million and two million copies respectively by the RIAA.

Tours

Kanye West headlined 190 concerts between 2004 and 2007, grossing an average of $244,669 and selling an average of 5,235 tickets per date. (Source: Pollstar Artist Profile Report, © 2007)

The lead single from “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” “In da Club,” which The Source noted for its “blaring horns, funky organs, guitar riffs and sparse hand claps” broke a Billboard record as the most listened-to song in radio history within a week.

Tours

50 Cent headlined 199 concerts worldwide between 2002 and 2007, grossing an average of $632,272 and selling an average of 11,406 tickets per date between 2005 and 2007. (Source: Pollstar Artist Profile Report, © 2007)

    Alright my people, listen up. I understand everyone’s criticisms as well as some of the anger but, if you are so upset with the way that “black radio” presents itself, then why would you allow your comments about it sound like the music that you hate to hear come from it? You might not like who “black radio” has become, but I have yet to hear anyone explain anything they have done to help change it’s format for the better. Has anyone sent a letter or called anyone? Has anyone banded together to form a protest? Just wondering. I know that there are a number of talented artists out there that deserve a chance to be heard… through RADIO! Radio is an engine for artists to promote themselves. People, understand that if “black radio” is taken away, you are taking away another opportunity for great artists to express themselves and show who they really are. Understand that this is something that we need. I hear black people complain all the time that no one hears them and no one gives them a chance to speak. This is our chance to be heard… this is our chance to speak. If this is taken away, we will regret not fighting for it. Yes… a lot could be changed about the format, but fight for it first and then change it. Don’t lose it and not be able to have a voice. A crowd can’t hear you without a microphone. Why are black people so ready to give up? We complain and give up. We talk trash and do nothing. We hate on each other and fight each other. What happened to fighting for a cause? We all know we don’t prefer the music that is played, but we all know the bottom line is that it is necessary for us to have a voice. FIGHT FOR THE VOICE!!! Fight for the voice and then fight for the music.
    If it’s gone…. then so are we.

    It is crazy situation overall. The ’small’ black radio stations will probably suffer the most – sign off altogether. The corporate stations may not be affected to that extent. They talk about “black radio” – what about the ‘white owned’ stations….they listen to Kanye, 50, TI, Kirk Franklin & Mary Mary too.

    On one hand I think this is a smoke-screen. I believe that there was a spark, an interest in politics/media/journalism and this is a way of deterring upcoming young afro-americans political science majors, community leaders and activists [who use radio to discuss issues facing their communities and providing political analysis]. I’m not all that familiar with political analysts, I know there are hundreds of afro-american broadcasters giving insight, opinion on today’s politics, but none are receiving the viewer/listenership as white broadcasters. I see are Hannity/Colmes, Keith Olberman, etc.

    On the other hand, it’s a little difficult to show support for ‘black radio’ in this
    situation. In the Philadelphia radio market Radio One launched Praise 103.9FM
    on Feb 27, 2005. I had spent seven years as music director. In 2004, I had been
    out of work and was looking to get back in to radio. I was interested in employment
    as on air announcer, submitted resume after resume and did not receive a phone call nor
    interview. There are too many ill-facts and two-sided stories to mention here and
    I’ll leave it at that. Simply put, ‘black radio’ did not employ me. I was qualified
    for the job. Thank God I was able to find employment elsewhere, music and
    broadcasting are my 2 passions – I’m gifted in those fields, unfortunately I worked
    type of jobs.

    Whatever happens, we’ll have to accept what God allows and if granted a ‘next time’
    We’ll have our stuff together and be prepared and better organized – stop showboating and handle business the right way!

    It is ashame that there is so much self hatred amongst black people that it is appalling. While some of yall uppity tight azz negreoes are complaining about what the type of music and entertainment that black radio plays but yall fail to realize that it is all about black empowerment especially when we still have a very racist and bias media out there who dont always talk about the injustices that black people have gone through by the system but let it be some blonde little white girl it would be on every station. And yet some of these tight azz uppity negroes are out here dissing black radio and dont get me wrong Im not a big fan of some of the rap music they put out today but you have to look at it for some young black males it is a way out of poverty because everybody dont have the smarts for college . Those who claims that rap is not a form of music are the ones who hate it the most but fail to remember back in the days when rap first took off the country was fealing the same way about rap until they found out that it was white kids that was buying all the rap music and industry was making huge propfits in sales from those white kids. For some of yall who are old enough to remember the pre B.E.T. days when you had no choice but to watch MTV with their VanHalen or Twisted Sister videos should how how it would be not to have entertainment that you cant relate to because in those days they didnt play hardly any black music. I think this Conyers guy is a prime example of self hatred black culture and music when you are in position of power and you forget where you come from and chose to bring your own people way of life down instead of uplifting the your people.

    Black radio was dead 10 years ago!Radio One is the cause of it!
    Do you know how hard it is to get local rappers and singers on the radio?Remember they stop asking us what we wanted to hear?
    They would only play 10 songs in rotation for 24 hours.I guess you want black folks to fear losing the only 10 songs you give us!The internet is the best source for music, it provides us with hundreds of artist from around the world. So let 92q die with V103!

    DETROIT CITY and the World will hear and know what Lenny Diamonds has to say about this

  • 5-13-2009 6:09 pm

    I didn’t think BLACK radio stations still existed.Every radio station sounds the same, same format, same OLD thing. That old black man (Congressman John Conyers) should be a shamed,at 80 years old he should know the importance of BLACK RADIO,He most like would not be a congressman with out black radio, that also goes for OBAMA as well? What will he do for black radio?? He’s suppose to be black right?,or is he black when he need a vote or two. Conyers is most likely being paid by over seas radio companies? I think UNCLE TOMISM is showing it disgraceful face again.

  • 5-13-2009 3:53 pm

    This is as much deplorable as it is sad…80yrs.old an selling out to the recording industry.I just got off the phone with someone at Rep.Conyers D.C.office who tried to sell me the notion that the idea here is to compensate artists for radio airplay, much in the same manner actors are receive compensation from television re-runs.Be real, that’s not the same medium, not the same dynamic.Firstly, there are X to the tenth power many more radio stations than television stations.Secondly,a four minute radio spin can be “repeated” seven times within the 30 minute slot that an old episode of a sitcom could be aired in.Comparable? Hardly!Thirdly, consider how many aspiring musicians, singers and producers who’d give practicully anything for just ONE radio spin! From 88.1 to 107.9Mhz,FM means FREE MUSIC!!!

  • 5-13-2009 3:47 pm
