From The Wall Street Journal

Armed with a blow dryer and brush, deft wrist action and shrewd promotional tactics, immigrants from the Dominican Republic are snipping away market share from African-American stylists whose mastery of black women’s hair ensured for generations that their customers wouldn’t, or couldn’t, leave them. Promises of seemingly healthier hair, swifter service and far lower prices are wooing away a growing number of black women.

Ms. Rollins and most other African-American women require a chemical “relaxer” to straighten their hair and get touch-up treatments every six weeks or so. She and many other customers say another benefit of the Dominican technique is that it extends the life of straightening chemicals, thus reducing the frequency of application and potentially harmful effects.

The defections have infuriated African-American stylists who insist that their methods are safe and that they are more highly trained than the Dominicans are. “It’s hard enough in these times, but they are undercutting our prices, even passing out fliers to our own clients,” complains Atlanta hairdresser Jannifer Jackson, whose cancellations and no-shows began piling up once a Dominican salon opened about a mile away last summer.

The reason being is that the chemicals are cheap, so the overall price is cheap, and no one knows how to hide more black features, than Dominicans (straightening process). So the benefit to African American women is 2 fold. Whether here or in DR, it’s just an every 3 days affair for many Dominican woman with coarse, African hair, to stop in a spot and get it done. These are the same chicks who if they can’t get a Domi male with Indian or White dna traits, so they can have a chance of babies with non-black coarse hair, then they’d rather have an Asian man as the father of their babies, than a black with African hair. It’s SERIOUS out there, and while laughed at, by black women, they exhibit the same signs. Hair is very important to Dominicans too, which is why many dudes with African hair cut it so damn low, or put jherri curl juice in it, to NOT look so black. Not too different from many blacks here, with mentalities to ‘black hair’. So it’s THIS reason that so many black women are up in Domi shops today. Just like your Sponsor song sings. lol

Girrrrrrrrrrrrrrrl, I tell you: one of the C-Level executives at BlackPlanet must be Hispanic. There has been several articles featured on the various sites under BP’s umbrella, promoting the growing popularity of Dominican Salons among African-American women. When the media reiterates a message — no matter how bogus — it becomes the unequivocal reality. PERCEPTION IS THE REALITY — particularly when media bombards the public with self-serving images and half-truths. While a whopping 80% of hair care products are purchased by African-Americans, only a miniscule amount of the revenue generated from these purchases stay within our community. Why? Because Koreans have the hair weaving and wig business sewn up and whites have everything else.

Now, it seems as though BlackPlanet is doing its part in attempting to re-allocate revenue generated from the” SERVICE” end of African-American hair care business into the hands of Dominicans. Many black women and men have been able to sustain a nice middleclass lifestyle from their neighborhood salon business. It is their livelihoods. They often live in the same neighborhood as their salons are located. The money is re-circulated within the black community.

I, personally, patronize an African-American-owned salon. I don’t wear fake hair (never have/never will), but I go once every eight weeks to have my VERY LONG (real) hair trimmed. I enjoy listening to the sistahs in the shop talking a whole lot of smack about everything and nothing. It’s good clean fun. It is my intention to continue to patronize African-American-owned salons and to keep the black dollar circulating in the black community.

SIDEBAR: Although most Dominicans are black, our neighborhoods are not the same. In many cases the African-American and Dominican neighborhoods are either parallel are adjacent to each other, but very rarely do we dwell within the same community.

You know when you think about it, we as African-Americans can’t really blame no one but ourselves. Everytime we buy from the Asian beauty supply or patronize these Dominican shops, we empower them with the monies that could have easily benefited the African-American Stylists. On the other hand, we as Black folks must be more competitive with our prices so that the clientelle don’t want to look elsewhere for services not just in the salon but all phases of our businesses. I remember last Summer being given a flyer here in Bronx, NY for wash & sets, $6.00. As a stylist, even I can’t or won’t compete with that. Something has to give but unless we all start making some drastic changes, we will loose our African-American edge in the business world as a whole.

NAHH The Dominican salons here in NY are HORRIBLE. They talk about you in spanish, charge more, and take MUCH more time…They took 2hrs to give me some damn highlights…they left me under the dryer for more than an hr…HATE IT…KI went to a black salon when I was near NYC, they were so nice, through and understanding..Course my weave always gets done by black folk, but them dominicanos–smh I try to avoid at all costs.Oh and forget about relaxers….they put it in for 5 minutes and wash it out smh.

DollFaceSS, I have no idea what youre talking aout, there are a TON of Dom salons in NY.

As far as using chemicals to ‘lengthen our hair and make us look better in the eyes of others’ I DO IT FOR MYSELF. Smh Im so sick of some of you problack women who think I relax my hair to look a certain way for someonelse–Get a fkin CLUE- I do it because I like the way it looks on ME–Just like you wear YOUR hair a certain way and you buy certain clothes because YOU LIKE them..Smh GET off your damn high horse

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cestleon/ cestleon

C.J. Walker came up with the relaxing process to emulate white women. No other reason than that! Some of you can say that it makes your hair “more managable” (which is bullsh!te because it won’t stay put unless you put some more chemicals in it to “hold” it!) all you want, but all you are really doing is justifying the subconscious conditioning that previous generations have told you was the “correct” thing to do! The solution is quite simple…..start rocking naturals! That will stop this “problem”, keep some money in your pockets, help you land a brother that obviously isn’t completely wrapped up in superficiality and besides aren’t a lot of Dominicans in the African diaspora anyway? Is this a brown vs black thing? Whats the deal? There are far more pressing issues in this world than the image that one projects to his/her peers. That’s what wrong with minorities we actually believed those bullsh!te Sprite (one of racist a$$ed Coca-Cola’s products) commercials that used to say that “image is everything”.

I live in CT, andI have been going to African American Salons for over 20 years. I have been to over 20 salons owned by African American women and men. Not one of these salons treated me professionally, taken me in a timely manner or has taken care great care of my hair. I have been put under the hair dryer to sit while they eat or talk on the phone. One salon even had the nerve to only have one person working (the owner) while there are ten people waiting for her, and her 3 kids plus nieces and nephews run around the small shop. One salon even permed and colored my hair at the same time. They also charge an outrageous price. After all that i decided to try the Dominicans, they were also unprofessional , but at least i was taken quickly, the prices were reasonable and they are taking good care of my hair. As a customer i weighed my options and decided the Dominicans were the way to go.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sozo04/ sozo04

@misz_pink I’m with you. Although my hair is natural, I didn’t relax it or go natural to please anyone but myself. Additionally, Garrett Morgan discovered the effects of lye on wool. Maybe we should go back and blame him for wanting Black women to have silky tresses like whites. Bottom line is, women will normally conform to what MEN want. Not the so-called European standard of beauty, but the male standard. Women throughout history have done this and those that didn’t were looked down on, teased, burned at the stake for being witches, etc.
I used to go to Black salons like most, but years of spending hundreds of dollars on over priced services in unprofessional environments, along with my hair ending up no healthier, really turned me off. So now, I’ve learned to do my natural hair and can straighten it or rock a fro as I please. The unwillingness of these stylists to treat natural hair (or charging more along with the silent contempt that most of them have for it) will keep me from going to any salons.

LMAO! I knew it was only a matter of time before the Dominicans invaded Down South. They took over in NY a long time ago. Reason being: American Black and Africans been f**kin’ up Black women hair for the longest and everybody know it. In NY, when the Black women decide to throw that nasty weave away and grow her own s**t back, they know it’s time to call the Dominicans. I’m a dude and I know what time it is. Black women became just a number in black salons and the stylist their use a cookie cutter approach to doin’ hair and puttin’ in perms and what-not. The Dominicans treat every custy special and the s**t they use is more expensive and better. Black barbers down south BEWARE! Cause if the Dominican barbershops go down there yall done too.

    Hello

i have been to black and dominican salons and the service were both the same..
i have to say that it depends on what your geting.. i did how ever go to 2 dominican shops in brooklyn Nyc that did over charge me base in the length of my hair.. and i went to two other Dominincan spots that charge me way less aound 20 to30 for a wash and blow out.. but i also notice it depends on the days you go.. thursday- sunday the price was more and other days less.. for my african american shops i never had any major issue it use to cost about 40 to 50 wash and braid my hair..i how ever do like when the dominicans wash and blow dry and then i would head to my african shop to get my hair braid.. but i think it all comes down to how you have been treated.. in todays world people need to be more vocal.. if your at your local shop and something takes place you dont like say something.. let it be known how you feel..

Pricing in a recession has a LOT to do with it, as well as respecting the customer’s time. Customers want to get-in and get-out. Take a good look on a Saturday morning or the days before a major holiday. You rarely see the exactly same customers in a Hispanic salon more than 2 hours. Also as a customer you have to speak up, I know how long each process takes for me and don’t find it acceptable to wait and accommodate those who are late, etc., my time is just as precious.

Learn Business Tactics and evolve with the times. You cannot stay the same as things were 20 yrs ago and cry when u loose money. What business doesn’t change over time? Here in Providence,RI. There are so many Africans and so many non ethnic salons. Still looking for a loctician here. We need some business minded people and less complainers.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ttyson32/ ttyson32

Seriously?? As a black american woman, I am so sick of hearing about other people taking over. If you concerned about someone causing you to go out of business, stop complaining and do something about it. Secondly, if people are leaving your shop and switching over to another style and technique, check yourself. Maybe you should re-evaluate your business. For 20 years I have let black shops do my hair. No growth, expensive, and long waits. Last 4 years I have been going to Dominican shops off and on. Cheap, simular products, and short time.

Really???? Who wants to spend 4 hours in a hair salon, gossiping about local churches, family members, or sitting through your lunch break? Then to top it off, you wake up the next morning and your style is not there. I can go to a dominican shop Saturday morning, no matter what time and be out in 2hrs tops. At the end of the night, grease or cream up my scalf, pin curl or wrap my hair and go to bed. Wake up the next morning and my hair still looks like I just got it done. It’s a preference and based on personal experience.

Oh and why pay $65 for a wash and set when I can pay $20-$35??

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Vie_10/ Vie_10

I stop going to the solon since I cut all my hair and went natural 2years ago. But prior to going natural I was being charged about $180.00 to $50.00 every 2 weeks for perm, styling, or wash at the African American salons. A friend referred me to a Dominican solon after complaining about the breakage of my hair. I spent about $60 to $20.00 at the Dominican solon for basically the same thing I was getting done at the African American solons. It’s all about the money with the African American solon, at least the ones I’ve been to in CT.

My mom used to go the the Dominican until her hair started thinning out. She went back to our BLACK hair dresser who helped get her hair back to healthy. That’s why I press my hair myself or get it braided. American Black Salon’s charge too much like is said below. They book alot of people so if someone
doesn’t show up, they will still make their money. This is a prime example of why Black businesses fail. They don’t know how to treat their customers. They take us for granted. Now you can buy some hair, have it sewed in by a bootlegger in their house for about $60, it lasts for a month and go on about your business. I see why the Dominican’s are taking over the hair buisness! Just like the Chinese and their hair stores. Blacks don’t keep enough different kinds of products in stock and they wonder why you don’t support Black businesses? Here are some reasons why!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sima430/ sima430

Black stylist need to step up their game; as customer, sitting in a salon for hours and i mean hours isn’t appealing especially you can go elsewhere for less time and money. As an African-American man, I have a huge issue with this article because this just promotes more “drama” within the community of Color and that is one of the LAST things that we need!

First things first—last I checked, Dominicans are people of Color, just like African-Americans, and it is THIS type of thinking that just promotes further stupidity within our community….Secondly, if someone, in a legal business entity, is able to provide a service for a better price, it is called COMPETITION…..If you want to compete, then improve your service or lower your price…Perhaps you can offer a new ‘niche’ in your business….Here in NYC, whether it is “around the way” in Brooklyn, or uptown in “Harlem World USA”, or Washington Heights, or Inwood, or the “Boogie Down” Bronx, we generally live in the same neighborhoods, shop at the same places, and listen to a lot of the same music….

When are we going to understand that the community of Color has changed and evolved into a bigger and more beautiful community?

Stop whining! Business is business and, as long as it is conducted honestly and legally, let the best person/business win. These kinds of articles are just meant to get attention for the publishers, even if that attention is got by negative, condescending, racist hate-mongering. And, they are really insults to the People they pretend to champion: Black Folk. Black Women have always held their own in the hair-care industry and to suggest that they cannot compete successfully with ANYONE is an undeserved slap at their hard-working, creative, resourceful and take-no-stuff abilities. People like the peddlers of this trashy talk, rightfully whine when WE are denied fair and unfettered access to various marketplaces. So, as proud, capable, hard-working Black people, we should kick them to the curb whenever they pander to weakness and fear in order to boost their ratings. So, “Shut UP”, and let us get back to work.

I am a Black Man who truly respects and admires our good, positive and beautiful Black Women. Does it appear that the writers/editors of these type articles truly do the same? — JMJsquared

The way I see it is if the DRs are taking away the business then we need to step up our game, see that they are offering, offer that THEN some…make sure that there is nothing special they would offer that we don’t. We cant get upset for something they are doing when we could do the EXACT SAME thing but chose not to. Just like there are MORE beauty/ hair supply stores ran by oriental women…WE know what WE like…why not give YOUR people what they want…why let someone else do it. Sorry but this article is right on the money. I don NOT have 7 hours to sit in a black salon while people wlork slow, gossip, can’t find their gloves, have to call their BF/mother/kids, do one head start to finish, take a break then the next, eat, forget to turn on the irons …and DON”t get a weave – that’s a 12 hour process for 12 tracks!

I used to go to a Dominican salon and I could get a realaxer, deep conditioner, set, blow and they’d wrap it if I wanted to – all in 2 hours and for $40! In and out. No BS, I have never waited longer than 15 minutes and all the workers have a role – relax or wash/cond or set.

My hair DID grow. Then I cut it all off
Dominican salons can not seem to work with short hair. So I went back to my old salon. Always style great.

I must admit that once it grows back in I’ll be going BACK to my Dominican salon. My hair was soooooo much healthier and relaxers lasted 3 months!

Sorry but folks need to handle their business and qjuit complaining.

People can be as negative as they want to about my people and my culture. But we Dominicans specialize in doing hair. We are able to make natural hair look as straight as if it were chemically treated. When I lived in Philly, I used to go to African American shops and they acted like they had no idea how to do my hair without trying to slap a perm in it or some weave! They had attitudes and unproffesional on several different levels! I was ecstatic when Dominicans started opening up shops. Instead of paying $90 I was now paying $30 or $40 tops! My hair was beautiful, lasted at least 3 weeks, and I was able to speak my native tongue. Dominicans rock!!!

Well for me personally, I will not let anyone but a black person do my hair. I will pay more if I have to and I just love the environment of a black salon shop. That must be an east coast thing there are absolutely zero Dominicans hair shops where I live.

I grew up in my aunts salon and my bff’s grandmother’s barber shop in Ohio. So this goes against all that I was trained to believe. My mother who has never really needed a relaxer has gone natural for the past 6 years. She now goes to a Dominican salon in the Atlanta area. They have no problem straightening her natural hair, her styles last for two weeks, and her hair is growing longer and longer. The price fits her retirement income, and the biggest thing is, she isn’t sitting at the salon all day long. I can’t comment on other Dominican salons. But this is one is about the business at hand. If her appointment time is at 8, she’s out the door by 10, and she has shoulder length hair. I don’t think the problem is Dominican vs. Black salons. It’s about time management and price. Back in the day black salons and barber shops were a meeting place. But if you’re not interested in the chitter chatter and sitting for hours with a wet head because the stylist is overbooked, leaves the salon to pick her children up, or sits there and eats lunch while you wait. All of this and expect to be paid top dollar at get a great tip. This salon is giving her what she pays for. I think the black salons have something to learn here…. MORE HAIR

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ebonitia/ Ebonitia

Black is a color–not a culture. Dominican hair salons are black hair salons. This reminds me of the fight about buying foreign cars. African-American hair dressers have started screaming about buying “black,” when they really mean buy American. Will they step up with the hair blower and meet the latest in competition? China sells the hair and participates in their own lack of self love by slitting their eye lids.

It seems that many many women continue to diminish themselves in order to be “more.” So — there will continue to be enough customers for all. Remember when black men used to “conk” their hair? They seem to have forgotten. This lack of self love and common sense is sad to the point of being tragic. Less curl, less texture, less color — less means you are more? Down is an up?

LOL! HA! Die laughing! Get Real. Pale and diminished is simply another look. To each his own. Weak men need their women to appear weaker than them. When–if ever– will most men be strong enough to support strong women? Another discussion…

Me — I haven’t been in a “hair salon” in almost 30 years. I’ve met “hair” dressers who don’t even know what naturally “black” hair looks like. Sad, but true. I wear “Egyptian locks” and they are as naturally beautiful as they were thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt. Do natural and bottle blondes feel the need to jump in my face because I’m for real competition. Yes–they do. And, yes–itz a boost to my ego–for real.

There is nothing wrong with the Dominican’s doing their thing. It’s Free Enterprise, people, and if you don’t like to see someone else doing better than you, then you do your homework, and re-evaluate what you have been doing and get on your JOB. Stop saying everything is racist, it’s not.

When I seen the title of this article, I new that nothing good would come from it or people would become defensive. I then browsed some of the comments and many are taken this just the way its given. This article originated from the Wall Street Journel people. My opinion, this article is design to put the black and dominicans at war with each other. The black hair salons, you should not look at this as a negative, but look at this as a positive. You have to step your game up. In any business you have competition; the stock market its nothing but price wars and back stabbing. For the blacks, look at the comments and most of your client tell is saying the reasons why they go elsewhere. These reasons I sure you can change and win your customers back. When you go into business for yourself, never think small, always think big. This is why most of the small businesses fail and its not just black. You must be customer centric, your product or service must be professionally presentable, above all you must be flexible in your pricing as you read from the article. If your interested stop pass my page and I will give you names of books that can help you strive for success. Don’t fall victem to this article!

Well Dominicans are black and in many, many cases – blacker than us. The only thing is, they are white in the mind (most of them), so this where the problem is. I always tell black people, if you want a successful business with black customers, never tell them you own the place as much as you would love to brag about it. Niggas will spend their money on ANYONE but their own in a heartbeat. These others could come from countries they never heard of, never smile or say a word to them (except how much you pay?), and even treat them with disrespect (calling them racial names too), but niggas have been psychologically programmed to give money to anyone but blacks.

At first the blacks excuse is “the service is not the same” or “the quality is not the same.” True, is some instances, blacks do have half assed quality and presentation, but the deeper issue is that we have been programmed to reject our own and go foreign. Many blacks just hate to see successful blacks and would rather not give them the money because they are thinking “why can’t that be me?” Instead you give it to Asians who do not even want to live around you, but will risk their lives to get your money! In fact, these others are safer selling in black hoods than a black business owner would be. Niggas would be quicker to kill the black store owner than they would the ‘other.’ It is due to the training of disrespect received via the white man.

Now we know Dominicans are black, but just the same, we also know that they are some of the biggest Uncle Toms around – even worse than Puerto-Ricans! As the article stated, black hair care (the actual caring part) was always a guaranteed business for blacks. If you let that slip away, then we are almost truly left with nothing but soul food places and I am sure white have those too. I hear from females how much they complain about Asians doing their nails and the disrespect that they receive, but what I never hear is that they will not return! Instead, they make all types of excuses to no leave. For blacks, they make all types of excuses not to go!

    ***
    It’s Business! Not Racism.

I’m a natural woman. I live in a major city. The ADVERTISED natural salons are very expensive and the regular AA owned salon usually don’t advertise or have a stylist in house that knows how to deal with natural hair in a healthy way.

Ex. — I went to a stylist and asked for a wash, trim and blow-dry. I explained before the appointment was set, that I was natural and preferred that bad oil based product not be used. The stylist said she could handle it and had experience with natural hair. The wash and trim were fine, the blow-dry was not. She relied on some oil product to get my hair straight. I could put my hand in my hair and it came out glistening. (NO THANKS) Needless to say, no other appointments ever made.

On the flip side. I have also been to Dominican and Egyptian salon for blow-dries. The results are nice as is the price, but I often come out with a burnt hair smell. Again, NO THANKS. So I am now a home salon person.

I think that stylist should re-educate themselves, work on their techniques and come up with a business plan. Check out the market or see f it has changed in their areas. Do surveys from women on the street. Find out what they want and see if you’re willing to provide the service that can increase revenue. No one is taking your business. It competition, you just have to decide if you want to compete or not.

I also try to patron my own, but when it comes down to it. Overall quality of service will always win out for me, regardless of ethnicity.

    Good luck stylist…

Well I’m from Chicago and this is nothing new for us. These type of shops have been around for almost 12 years now. It started off with just one in our downtown area. 12 years ago only the so called business women went there because most of the inner city women did not either travel downtown to know about it or because they charged $65-100. Most black women are not going to pay that must for our real hair to be done. About 8 years ago these shop started showing up in the “hood” charging only $25-35 for a wash and blowdry and the products the hair products they use are great. They also get you out of there within 45 min., and we all know it takes at least 4 to 8 hours in a black shop. It’s not only the Dominicans it’s also the Indians too. So don’t hate on them. Don’t get me wrong when I need my weave or short cut then black it is.

I don’t go to the African-American salons becuase I don’t have all day to spend in the salon; and all I want is a haircut/trim anyway. I already know how to wash, condition, blow dry, perm/straighten my own hair. The African-American salons I go to have a attitude just because I want a cut.

As someone with natural hair, whenever I got to an Afican American salon, they either don’t know how to correctly to do my hair or they charge too much. As much as I love my NYC salon, I can’t afford to go all the times becuase I’m shelling out about $125 just for a trim, wash, and condition. This place is the only African American salon I have been to that hasn’t burned my hair with the hot comb, done a poor job because they really don’t know how to work with natural hair, or just flat out refused to do my hair because I dodn’t have a perm. When I go to the Dominicans, they know how to do my hair and I can afford it. Honestly, it just about who can do your hair at a price you can afford. I’m willing splurge for my NYC salon for the major stuff like a cut do any dye jobs, but just for simple maintanence, I’ll go to the Dominican spot.

Capitalism works !!! We need competitors to stay relevant. If not, our service will be very poor. Maybe African American solons need to ideatify their weaknesses and work on those and strengthen their strong areas to better compete. The Dominican presence helps improve African American businesses if they take heed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/IndigoDreams4Me/ IndigoDreams4Me

Nobody is “driving” us out of business- it’s not like the Dominicans came and took a big bulldozer and demolished our salons, or stood outside with picket-signs, and hoodlums with baseball bats to scare off our customers!

We all know that business is based on supply and demand. If salons run by the Dominicans, Haitians, Koreans, Mexicans, Puerto-Ricans, Martians, or whoever offers a service that is more in demand than salons run by Blacks, then they will own more of the market share. It’s just a principle from business 101, that we can use in our favor also.

The challenge for the Black salons, is to now find innovative ways to take that market share right back. After all, business is a battle: as they say “to the victor goes the spoils”. Whatever the Dominican salons are offering, the Black salons can offer too (even if it means hiring some Dominicans to train our folks in the “Dominican Technique”, then doing what they do, faster, cheaper, or with greater quality..heck, offer an herbal scalp revitalizer, discounted nails or discounted beauty aids on top of it…or something!). Right now, for the most part, we have more of “presence” in our own communities, than the Dominicans… or we should have. Can’t we leverage that somehow, to gain a deeper foothold then they do?

If there are currently more Black Salons then Dominican, then maybe offering the same services for less money, will enable us to “drive” the Dominicans out of business. Maybe more agressive and visible marketing in the Black community by our salons can also help (instead of just complaining about the “defections”, getting “infuriated” and getting our feelings hurt).

Maybe we can even join forces with the Dominicans: have salons where both Black and Dominican services are offered side-by-side… IF it can be shown that doing so will allow both parties to enjoy more revenue than by competing with each other.

I’m sure there are many people out there with better ideas than I’ve been able to come up with in ten minutes. My point is that our businesses CAN turn the tides and take back the market share..OUR market share.

We shouldn’t get angry and frustrated with the Dominicans – while they just laugh at our anger and frustration, and take the money that should be in our communities to THEIR banks, and spend it on THEIR families. We should thank them for motivating us – even more – to take our entrepreneurial skills to the next level.

We shouldn’t fear or get angry with competition, in the marketplace or anywhere else. We should embrace it, secure in the knowledge that we will eventually prevail – as we always have….. and then the Wall Street Journal can write an article about that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/missypete/ missypete

This is a really ignorant article. Dominicans are blacks (hispanics). For years, I knew many Jamaicans in Miami that I allowed to do my hair; there was never an issue. Now the Dominicans get into the game and it becomes Dominicans vs Blacks. If you going to write about racial issues, get the facts first. Maybe, you should do a little history on Dominicans; you will discover, they have African blood too.

I think its funny how African-American people think that they are the only black people in America, when most people from Latino Countries have strong African Roots. Do any of you ignorant people know that the Dominican Republic shares the same Caribbean island as Haiti? You people make me laugh. I myself, have an East Indian mother who is from the west indies. All I have to say is that whenever I went to a black Salon the first thing they say is Perm Relaxer Texturizer and when i insist on keeping my hair natural they butcher my hair and cut it way too short. These black hair salons don’t know how to do mixed folks hair. So yeah, I won’t go to a white hair salon so I go to the next best thing. Dominicans actually already have the same hair texture as me, and don’t even want to cut it when I ask them too. I love them because their treatments done twice a month keeps my hair moist enough that I don’t even need alot of grease in my hair for the rest of the month. And God knows im grateful to not have anymore chemical burns on my head!

    @IndigoDreams4Me

Well said! I never get my hair done in beauty salons because I do it myself so when I go with friends who have their hair done…I see the great difference in Dominicans and Black Americans skills. I have long natural, thick, kinky hair which I don’t relax but a Dominican would steam, blow dry it and put in curlers and my hair would look better than those with relaxed hair than Black American salon done (this I know from experience with my blood sisters). Time for the Black American salons to step up their game and don’t presumed all sisters wanted relax hair and learn how to do hair like mine which is not rough but soft and almost straight. They have to realizes that many black people have different hair textures…some curly, kink, nappy, straight or a combination of those.

I don’t think it’s all about the technique and price. Black salons here in Indianapolis mostly just do perms only. There is only maybe one natural hair care salon here. I have a natural and a lot of people are going this route. I have friends that do not even know what their hair texture looks like. It’s a shame, we do even know what what our hair can do or how to safely straighten it if we want the look. Black salons need to keep with times and try safer methods of doing hair. Dominican salons have figured it out… Sorry.

    This article is stupid.

1.) The Dominican Republic is only like 90% black. For real. And the ones that aren’t black are probably mixed. This is why they are good at doing Black hair as well as other hair types. The African Diaspora is not only in Oakland, Atlanta, and Harlem. There’s a whole world outside of the U.S. and your neighborhood.

2.) This is called competition. All business have to face competition. You either improve your services or prices, or you cease to exist. This is just Business 101. Further proof that some of these people don’t know much about business. If the Dominicans are so called undercutting them. Why not offer the same services as them? Why not bend and adapt to change? Billuguy wtf you talking about west indians and africans, these ppl came to work and make money, they don’t have time to slack off. If you looking for lazy, rude, arrogant black people take a look at african americans with your stupid ass. They have the highest rate of high school/college drop outs, highest rates of unemployment, highest prison populations. Don’t come on here blaming immigrants for african amrican problems, look right in the damn mirror. It takes a west indian hair braider under 3 hrs to do micro braids and the cost is lower, black americans take a lifetime and want to charge about 300, man please. Don’t get me started on here, you go to these black american salons and they take forever, talk to damn much, want to eat, chat on the phone, ask you all your personal business while they’re supposed to be doing your hair. Don’t come on here trying to bash west indians for african american problems.

I have only recently started frequenting salons and yes, I prefer the Dominican salons. For 1, they are cheaper. The one I currently go to is $20 for wash and set. Adding styles is like $5 or $10 more. If you want to blow dry, it is included in the $20, and they will even use the flat iron if it isn’t straight enough for you. My friends were going to black salons and while some of their styles are really nice and exotic, they were always paying $50 or more for everything, especially if their hair was longer. Then there is the wait/appt. The black salons that I went to (I tried 3 or 4 in a row because my friend and I were trying to get our hair done by a black salon) denied us for some reason or other. It ended up being that they said they had too many clients waiting, etc. None of the stores had more than 5 people in the chair. One of them had 2 people in the chair and 1 under the dryer; they wanted to make me an appt. I guess they wanted to go out later on or something. I go to ANY Dominican salon in the area, morning afternoon and night and they take you. The down side is the wait because of walk ins; sometimes they have so many clients that you usually get there and you have to wait. But I still end up getting seen within 20 minutes. And they do have you sit under the dryer for an hour. However, at 1 salon (which I don’t go to anymore), they took me out the dryer after a half an hour and my hair was still wet so it didn’t come out as straight.
I’m all for supporting our black salons, however, our black salons need to pay more attention to us and give us good prices whether we are their buddies or not. Women are naturally going to go to a salon that charges them $20 than they would a salon across the street charging $40.
As far as the weave and braiding salons, I have never been but I know that they charge an arm and a leg as well. Some friends of mine get their family to do their hair at home instead of paying the salons $200 plus to braid their hair. I think it’s mostly economics. For me anyway. There are no black salons in my area that will charge the same as the Dominicans for the same procedures.

Who ever wrote this article needs to get more education. Most Dominicans are also black, so stop with this division of people it only leads to hate. Anyways, my view is if you slack off anybody has the right to out perform you and take your business. It is a free market, it is called competition. I am glad most of the comments below me, have a similar view as mine. It is 2010 slack off and its just your end. :) Once again, I am going to tell these article writers that african americans are NOT THE ONLY BLACKS IN THIS WORLD..SO YA’LL NEED TO GET THAT THINKING OFF Y’ALL MINDS.

That is nothin new, that’s the same way white people do they hair, and really I don’t see that workin for black people who have kinkier hair, the lady who she was demonstrating on, had a very nice grade of hair, so I’m not impressed, but if you’ve never seen anyone get their hair done like that I guess it would amaze you…Not taking nothing from the Dom Rep….just my opinion….

Almost 7 yrs ago I started growing my perm out and wearing braids and cornrows because I was tired of 8-10 hr days in the salons. Tired of people packed in like sardines to get their hair done and the beauticians behaved as if we needed them and the hell with how we feel and how our time is valued.
Now I am all natural and I will cornrow my hair, twist it, and sometimes plait it up and take it down to wear natural. I have decided I am not going to continue to make Chinese rich and just celebrate and love who I am.
If the Dominicans are doing hair for less and less time, then I can understand why customers are leaving. Black beauty business owners must make changes to respect us and our time. If it is true the hair will come out from these techniques, then when customers return w/damaged hair, take the opportunity to not only repair their hair, but find out ways to better serve them from their time to and by saving them money. We must have a spirit of love for one another.

I’m all for supporting our African American salons, however, these salons need to pay more attention to good services, competitive prices and good customer service whether we are their buddies or not. Women are naturally going to go to a salon that charges less for good hair services and good customer service than they would an African American salon charging more money for bad hair services and bad stylist attitudes. WhooRay for the Dominicans for understanding what is clearly needed in this economy with the consumer price index not increasing and companies not giving yearly raises, which means less disposable income for all families. And the time you spend in a Dominican salon is two or three hours less than African American Salon. This is a good thing, so Thank you Dominicans for understaning what is needed now…:o)

I was born and raised in New York City, and have been acutely aware of the Dominican Blow Out Technique for years, as well as the negative effects that it can have on black hair. There has been a growing proliferation of Dominican salons in New York for the past twenty years. Although I no longer live in NY, my profession dictates that I visit the city regularly; in fact, I have standing reservations at the Sofitel and Bryant Park hotels. I have been a first-hand Eye-Witness to the devastating effects that the Dominican Technique has on black hair. Over the years, I have had many, many business associates and friends glow over the benefits of this technique – only to be later traumatized with thinning hair, bald spots, permanent damage and breakage. Initially, the results are fantastic, but continued use inevitably results in EXTREME DAMAGE – sometimes irreparable damage. When one of my girlfriends started to use this process, her hair was initially lovely, but within six months, her edges looked moth-eaten and her hair became dry, brittle and paper thin. She was in tears. It took her well over a year to repair the damage done by the Dominican Blow-Out Technique, and her hair still does not have the luster that it had prior to using this technique. THIS IS NOT A DOMINICAN VS. AFRICAN-AMERICAN ISSUE. WE ARE ALL BLACK. WHAT IT’S ABOUT IS DOES THIS TECHNIQUE HAVE POSITIVE EFFECTS ON BLACK HAIR? AND, THE ANSWER TO THAT IS: IT DOES NOT — IT IS EXTREMELY DAMAGING TO BLACK HAIR.

Black hair is fragile hair, and it cannot withstand the perpetual bombardment of direct heat that is required by the Dominican Blow Out Technique.

BOTTOMLINE: My hair is my CROWNING GLORY, and if I believed that the Dominican methodology in hair care would enhance the beauty of my hair, I would use it. But au contraire, it does not enhance the health or beauty of black hair, but what it does is DAMAGE THE HAIR. I don’t care if the Dominicans were charging one dollar for their blow-outs, I still would not get my hair done at these salons: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! I have beautiful, bouncing and behaving hair, and I plan to keep it that way by staying out of the Dominican Salons.

SIDEBAR: This article is presented on both Hello Beautiful and NewsOne. Is it really so newsworthy that it rates exposure on both sites, or is this merely a surreptitious strategy to give free publicity for a BlackPlanet employee or an employee’s relative? This is a lot of free publicity for a small entrepreneurial hair salon. Hitting this large of a target market through an advertising campaign would cost hundreds-of-thousands of dollars; it appears somebody at BP is attempting to level the playing ground in favor of the Dominicans. The ironic thing about it is that I have never seen BP give this type of free publicity to any African-American-owned small business; and yet, the majority of BP’s clientele base is African-American. This article is very fishy. Hmm? Regardless of the motive behind this article, the bottom line remains that this technique is EXTREMELY DAMAGING TO BLACK HAIR

I’ll bet you that the ones complaining are the stylists who charge way too much money and barely do a great job. one of my exes said that since she had “good” hair, or because of the way her hair looked, she couldn’t go to a black salon because the b***hes would try to butcher their hair. Talk about some customer service. AND then the Dominicans charge less for the work. if the black salons want to keep their customers, knowing most of them are broke, maybe they should lower their f**king prices.

They do not mess up your hair that must be a comment written by someone who has never been to a dominican hair salon. I prefer their salons’ because my hair is not introduced to no flat iron, curling iron nor gels. My hair has been messed up by Black hair salons starting from the first-Black hair Is, Gerad Dure’s and other black hair salons. I have had to resort to the dominican hair salons to fix what was broken by black hair salons. If you bring in your preferred products they credit you accordingly, you get services on time, your hair grows and is not used by strenuous harmful chemicals and my hair has grown without my pockets being depleted and still being un happy with my style. I have wen tto balck salons to have hair dressers pull and tug at my hair to see if it is real or mine.. Is that professional. I have gotten up at 7 am on a sat for an appaointment only to have the black hair dresser stumble in an hour later and hs booked 4 other people for the same time and jumps from my hair to someone else’s?. When I inform them what works for my hair and what doesnt they tell me differently only to find out later that I was right. I pay 40 for a touch up, ends clip, wash and set with deep conditioner that lasts for two weeks while my susters charged me $70 due to the length of my hair and all i got was a touch up had to pay extra for a deep conditioner style didnt last for more than 4 days.
    I am not going back!

Um..this article is misleading. Dominicans are blacks but they are not African Americans. They are still descended from African peoples who were enslaved and brought to the Carribean.

    Wtf…ignorance.

Can we please start posting things that are positive about our own..geesh we are the only ones that seem to bash eachother in the public eye. Dominicans are black by skin, and Dominican by race..They do not like to be mistaken for black so stop trying to see them as black folk…because they do not claim us and continously have denied being black… if you dont believe me go over there and watch the divsion/lables for people… such as trigueno and mal pelo lolol for bad hair….My point is, its not about race..its about business..competition..so please stop bashing the cost of black hair salons, the time frame and so on…sistas we already get trashed by others, lets stop the negative attitudes on the blogs..in the end BLACK FOLKS ARE THE TREND SETTERS OF THE WORLD AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE..OK THANKS

I could write a book on the bad black hairdressers I’ve had over the past 30 years. I wish someone else would take over. So many of them are consistantly late. Need a ride somewhere. Have bad attitudes. Curse and yell over your head. Dont ask you what you want. When you tell them, they do what they want. Overcharge you. Leave you sitting with your hair wet while they go eat. Talk on the phone loudly while they do your hair. Gossip about everyone else in the shop. Tell all their business. The list goes on and on. Im sick and tired of bad attitude, unprofessional black hairdressers. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!! I WILL NO LONGER GIVE YOU MY HARD EARNED MONEY!! Asians, Latina’s and whoever else, If you can hook up a sistas hair, you got my money.

No, there is nothing wrong with friendly competition. I know the Egyptians have a similar style to doing hair here in Chicago and I am a huge fan. I cant speak for all Egyptian salons but the one I frequent has a better approach to appointments and time, customer service. Not to mention the price is not crazy expensive. If you lose your business because you over book your appointments, charge for every little service, and keep me in the shop for 5 hrs…. Im going elsewhere! Thanks~

Let me set some records straight, as a woman who has been a successful hair stylist for 25+ yrs I know alot about what is going on! First off, you cant put ALL black stylist in the same category! Not a good look. I have clients that I have been doing for 10+ yrs, the same people and they send me more clients every time! My customer service skills are great. One thing you DONT have to worry about is me talking mess about you in a different language while your receiving a service..VERY RUDE… Now, all that HEAT, blowdryers and round brushes..DAMAGE to the hair! oh, its not going to show now, but its starting slowly but surely and you dont and wont notice it because its starting from the ENDS! Do you know how many BLACK women I have right now who come to me to FIX what the $20 styling did to their hair?? Balding, thinning, Hair Folicules ALL burnt out! CHEAP isnt always the best way! See, I take my TIME with my clients..Im not just about getting a buck and then screaming “NEXT” I dont overbook BUT I dont RUSH either! My clients know EXACTLY what Im using in their hair b/c its in the ORIGINAL bottle and sometimes my distributor comes around and they are there when I make my purchases. I dont use CHEAP products on your hair, Im not going to be cheap in styling you so Im not CHEAP in what I charge. I charge what Im worth b/c I do a DAMN good job and Im not into making you look nice for the moment..I promote GROWTH and HEALTH in hair.. Now what alot of the NON stylist dont realize is that PRODUCTS COST! A jar of relaxer cost me $60, shampoo is $30..Conditioner is $25, my Oil Sheen is $10 and my Spritz is $6.50…there is also alot of other things that I buy, top notch that are NOT from your local beauty supply! You PAY for QUALITY!! Its so funny b/c a HUGE amount of customers want SOMETHING for NOTHING! You want all this GLAM but want to pay 20 cents! CLIENTS also come in late and then get mad when they are put to the end b/c they messed up the stylist flow! CLIENTS want to bring their kids n family memebers n friends to the shop but only 1 person is getting their hair done! The shop is the stylist JOB..can you take your children or your man or your friend to work with you? Then RESPECT the stylist and come ALONE!! I could go on and on but I wont and dont b/c Im not into bashing my race..We have enough people doing that…Im speaking on the life b/c I am a stylist and I have a large amount of friends who are also. We get clients that are mad b/c our shop doesnt allow children. We get clients that are mad b/c after they are 15 min late we tell them to reschedule..Its not always the stylist..the clients got ALOT of bull with them TOO! Who you spend your money with is FINE but I tell you what..Open a business and tell me how many Asians, Egyptians or Koreans are going to come and patronize you! Do you know what they are saying while your sitting in their chair getting your hair, nails or feet done?? I remember when I was in Norfolk Va servicing clients and a young lady was on the radio talking about her experience with the Asian Nail place… She was Asian & black but looked mostly black..Anyhow, she spoke the language fluently and while she was getting her feet done, she said the lady was rushing her.. she asked her not to rush and the lady doing her feet said in her language (not knowing the young lady spoke their language also)to the other tech “Let me hurry up so I can get this Black B***H out of here” She let her know that she understood and she left! Whats sad is that alot of you will receive F**KED up service with another race and wont have a complaint the first! BUT, when it comes to your own you have more than a mouthful!!!! The Dominicans are NOT a threat to me b/c I dont compete..Im my only competition! I have CLIENTS not CUSTOMERS who LOVE my work and dont care that my Silkening is $40 b/c they know that my way of doing things is NOT hurting their hair. Alot of the women go to the Africans..SAME THING and they have 2 to 3 people on your head, talk mad s**t about you in the seat and then charge you $300 for a style that you have to come back and get serviced a week later b/c the braids in the middle are too big! Come on now..Also, about the barbers..i dont know WHICH babershop you been too but ALL barbers dont dohair alike, the same as hairdressers! And you complaining b/c they are striking up conversation?? WTF?? are you serious?? That goes with the profession!! We want to make you feel comfortable while being serviced. What is wrong with conversation?? and the tip thing…WOW.. its like going to a restaurant..if the service is good, I TIP! When I go to MY hairdresser, I TIP..When my 17 yr old son goes to his BLACK barber, he TIPS!! Maybe you are just CHEAP and you need to learn to cut your OWN hair..The black barbers game is already stepped up, Maybe its your poclets that need to become a lil heavier and thats why your trying to bash them b/c you cant HANG! The whole thing is, dont bash and put ALL stylist and barbers in the same category! My stylist is BLACK, my nail tech is BLACK and the beauty suppliers are BLACK! and if there is something I dont like, i address it!! I dont know about you, but I spend my money w/ those who spend with ME!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/uwithmeoragainstme1/ uwithmeoragainstme1

Oh, and for the person who said that the Dominican salon doesnt mess up your hair.. it must be a comment from a person who is NOT a stylist b/c their way of doing it DOES take out your hair! I went to school for this,,but I had my gift since I was 10!! My styling gift is from GOD , my license from MAN… whats so funny is how I use to ALWAYS see alot of the woman bashing the black stylist, talking about how they charge and they can go there and get the same thing for cheaper..Whats funny about it is that they ALWAYS come BACK to get the TRAGEDY FIXED!

ROTFLMAO!! Im laughing b/c Black Hairstylist do just that..they STYLE!! They can do the Silk Press just as good as the Dominicans..the charge a lil more b/c they use the “Your hair is not going to thin, bald or fall out in the next yr” technique! I can tell who knows about hair and who doesnt.. Business is Business and Im not lowering my prices..Not as long as what Im using on my clients is top of the LINE! Alot of people got champagne taste but Pepsi money!! Ask yourself..how many of the Dominicans are LICENSED?? Do you SEE EXACTLY what products they use?? As the customer YOU better get wise to what is being done…b/c again, I have seen it over and over and over again… They come to the BLACK hairstylist to CORRECT what the Dominican Blow Out has done to their hair! Im speaking form EXPERIENCE!! Im not hating..GET MONEY… its calle d competition..but as a stylist and a client..I dont like to be RUSHED, I dont like TONS of HEAT burning my hair shaft and I dont like CHEAP products that are harsh to my head on my head!

Again, they are no COMPETITON to me. If anything I ask that whatever they do to KEEP ON DOING IT b/c its bringing clients into my chair, not away from it! Im my ONLY COMPETITION and that is fine with me! They can charge their $20 and Im still going to charge my $40…My clients dont seem to mind..they not taking over, they are just cheaper! Its a difference. You have some women who will pay for quality and some women who just want something cheap. I thank GOD that I have women who frequent me that loves QUALITY! @ MdotSosa, I dont know about your Aunt, I know about MY clients. See what Im talking about is not coming from the sideline, or from a friend or from an article or from something I heard..Im talking about it b/c Im LIVING IT! So again, its all good. No complaints from ME, just complaints from those who has been going and now see the damage done to their hair. I went to school for this and KNOW that HEAT and BRUSHES on your HAIR SHAFT no matter HOW pretty it is, in a matter of time is going to be so DAMAGING!! The girl up the street charge $60 for a sew in,,,I charge $175 and better, do you think that has stopped my clients?? HELL to the NO! Not by a long shot! There are a few stylist who do Fishtail braids, they charge $25 for 2 braids, I charge $50..do you think that stopped my clientel?? HELL to the NO!!! As a stylist I know that ALL money isnt GOOD MONEY and some people I dont even WANT IN MY CHAIR!! So, it works out for me..my business is fine and growing DAILY!! From NY, to VA, to NC, to ATL! Yes, my services are done and wanted all over..I travel and I love it!! big ups to the Dominicans for doing what they do… Big ups to them again b/c what ever it is they are doing are driving women to my seat after a period of time!! Also, to the person that said “the Black stylist be cutting up your hair” Listen, some of you clients come in these shops trying to hold onto a string of hair! Not a good look! ANOTHER STRAGEDY TO HAVE US FIGHT EACH OTHER before we gettogether and realise we are one DOMINICANS AND HAITIANS HEBREW ISRAELITES DECENDANT OF JACOB Gen 49:5-7 – Simeon and Levi are brethren, the people occupying the Island of Santo Domingo & Haiti known as Hispaniola. They share one island divided into two, which makes them close by neighbors or brothers. An instrument of cruelty that’s in their habitations represents the machete that they use for warfare. But mainly it represents the Voodoo that used against their people or enemies.
(6th verse) – Jacob didn’t want his righteous spirit to be involved in their secret endeavors that they have assembled, because of what Just before Jacob died he Prophesied over his son and their descendents.

they did to the inhabitants that dwell in Canaan (Gen 34:24-31), when they defiled their sister. Be not united; that’s why Santo Domingo & Haiti is divided by language barriers, and skin color and racial differences.

(7th verse) Jacob is letting us know cursed be their anger for what they did to their enemies, who defiled their sister, for it was cruel and they were divided and scattered amongst Israel, when the nation was spilt Southern Kingdom & Northern Kingdom. Deut 33:8-11 – The Thummin and Urim represented a certain elemental stone that was worn on the breast plate of the High Priest when he went into the Holy of Holies, to commune with the Most High, and there the Most High will show him judgment of the Children of Israel. The elemental stone will illuminate, and give off accurate information from the Most High to the High Priest.
(9th verse) Meaning when it came to the judgments and laws off the Most High it was no respect of persons (Exodus 32:26-28) they executed the righteous order and penalties, and were well disciplined.

(10th verse) The office of the Levites was to teach Jacob the Most High judgments, and Israel the Law. Administer the priesthood by Putting Incense before the Most High and burnt sacrifice upon the Altar for a covenant of Salt (forever). (11th verse) Moses asking the Most High to bless Levi and all his substance (which including all the first fruit of their tithes). And to accept the work that they do for the Most High. And destroy all the enemies that rise up against Levi. So how does this correlate with the Haitians. The Haitians practice spiritual rituals on the negative side of life that requires sacrifices of animals, incense burning. Due to the fact that we broke the Most High Laws, we were punished and cursed. So we see Haiti as the bases and most contemptible of the people. Malachi 2:2-3 & 8-9.

Not everyone has the same hair texture. What works for one may not work for others. To each it’s own. I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to try something new to see how it will work for you and your hair type. If the hair does get damaged, it is only hair, it will regrow from the root. Just take the experience and learn from it and learn how to treat your hair and take care of it in the future.

Dominicans and African-Americans are One. We are the same genetically…..most of us are African, mixed with some White and or Native-American. So these so-called Dominican hair salons are Black hair salons. So to the sisters…..go where its cheapest!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Wheres_Ya_Pic/ Wheres_Ya_Pic

Only Dominicans can blow out a Nap!! Since most of them don’t like being black they became super resourceful with a blow-dryer and a brush to make their hair seem less nappy which to them means LESS ATTRACTIVE!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Wheres_Ya_Pic/ Wheres_Ya_Pic

i meant to say….Less Nappy = MORE ATTRACTIVE!!
    Right?

That is what Free Enterprise system is all about. Sista you gotta build you a better mouse trap than the Dominican. I am sure Black salons, and stylists can learn what the Dominicans are doing to keep their customer hair healthier and apply that process in their shops.

Well… For years I have heard Black Women complain about the service in Black Hair Salons….from women gossiping,to fighting, to being late for appointments to being rude, bad service …. EVERYTHING
So if the Dominicans can offer better service at a cheaper price…. They DESERVE TO WIN THE BUSINESS…Its not that complex

    This is ignorance.
Most ppl don’t know that Zoe Saldana, Fabolous, and Juelz Santana are Dominican, and why is that? Because Americans can’t seem to comprehend the difference between nationality and race. Their country speaks spanish, so they must not be black (even though they clearly are). No one says hatians are stealing black business because they speak French (creole).

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/phazex_female/ phazex_female

This story is representative of WHY Dominicans (and Koreans) are just another prime example of WHY our black people are perceived as “consumers and laborers.”

If you don’t give them a reason to be in YOUR community? Then they have no reason to be there. And riddle me this? Why not give your chedda to your brotha or sista? Makes sense to me, instead of paying another “core” race money for a service that sistas have perfected and then the money floats out of the black community in less than 24 hours.

Don’t need a rocket-scientist to figure this one out. Shaking my head (again)…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/acallender1/ acallender1

Word to da wise: Black people! If you are running any type of business, just make sure that your always 100% Top Notch in your business. It is war out here in the United Snakes of AmeriKKKa and the winner takes ALL!!! and the weapon of mass destruction, in the U.S. is the Big Dollar Bill and Black People spends and controls the most dollars, thats legal and illegal worldwide. You saw what happend when Rosa Parks set off the bus boycot, your dollars was respected and basic civil rights was restore when riding public transportation and etc…Make them respect YOU and YOUrs by you respecting YOUr dollars or being where spend YOUr dollars, and that’s should be spent where you feel that you are respected. Asians and Latinos don’t respect me so, I don’t buy panda express or taco bell and etc…Especially, I stay out of swamp meet and cheap ass city bazaars. It is nothing, but low quality goods. Black people need to value themselves, especially, Sistas-giving the asians all your money for hair and nails. You they Kids to College off your money and your kids keeps going to Jail.

I agree with Phazex_female and Yolanda2329 Black people need to stick together more then ever in these times, like in the old days when we were calling each other brothas and Sistas, Instead like now when see each other we only display hate on other because of Willie Lynch and Self Hatred.
Remember: Winner takes all Nowdays!!! The dollar is weapon

Dominican, African, Brazilian, does it matter they are black too. Because some “people” are more successful than others in some fields we become envious. Is this what NEWSONE really want to start a black on black war? is this representing us as a people?. Shame, Casey Gane-McCalla news that brings us together not feed envy.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/csmooth08/ csmooth08

@xlene you dont know s**t about dominicans they are hispanics most of them look hispanics. They are quick to call us the N word if you mess with them. And yet no matter how bad they treat blacks or dont associate themselves with blacks they can always get lots of business from us, f**ken amazing.

I’m sorry but the Dominicans use too much heat on your hair. 1st they sit you under a hot dryer, then they blow your out with a blow dryer, then they flat iron it. That’s heat on top of heat on top of heat!!! All That heat will Damage your hair big time especially if it’s relaxed. That’s why I just stick to the natural. Flowing hair doesn’t=Healthy hair. Don’t be fooled by the type!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/deebaby3d/ deebaby3d

Yes, a lot of you are right about these Dominicans. but guess what…..the koreans are buying the blacks out as hair care providers. Instead of these korean beauty supply shop owners buying from the black hair care manufacturers, they are buying their products from korea, basically making and marketing their own black hair care products. Just a case of another race stealing from the black race. Not enough black people own black beauty supply shops, and that is why these koreans are cleaning up. Look some of these videos up on YouTube. I am thankful that i went natural years ago, because i can not imagine buying korean-made chemical products for my hair.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/islandgirlie72/ islandgirlie72

Im Dominican and have always considered myself Balck. THe only difference historically between African American and Dominican American is the boat stopped a little earlier and dropped off us Dominicans before it came to the states. Concerning hair texture….I have course hair. I have never wanted straighter hair. I like my hair. I keep it healthy whether it be long or short. I DO however want Black (that is African-American hairdresser, stylist (whatever people title you as these days) to understand that time is valuable. Even in the salons that consider themselves professional there are still alot of urban, ghetto, unprofessional tendencies….such as a call from the person doing my hair “Im on my way” is NOT in the salon when I get there OR overbooking so Im in the salon 4,5,6, hours NO MORE….my time is valuable OR men hanging out around the stations gossiping OR my stylist on her phone OR keeping me under the dryer extra time when I know my hair is dry and your bidding time cause you overbooked OR eating at your station while doing my hair, etc…I can go on and on. If my Dominican sisters can do a good job and not charge me an arm and a leg…..hello to some new money

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/acallender1/ acallender1

Sistas: start wearing your natural hair or maybe moderate to light chemicals, like hair food and natural hair growing oils for a healthy shine and look. Fake long weaves, ponytails, and barbie doll wigs is discussting. Just imagine??? if brothas, would start doing that s**t like wearing wigs and long hair ponytails and try to holla at you!!! you would be trippin.

Look at an example of beautiful black hair: Michele Obama, Woopy Goldberg,Oprah and Tyra Banks–Yes!! she was on the Larry King show and you can Youtube it. Tyra talks about not wearing all weave and wigs crap.

Word to da Wise: Black Women are envy of the world yet, you Sistas are caught up Like Lil Kim tryin to look like everybody else–a disgrace.

Black People: Don’t spend your hard earn money at these Fukin Asian and Latinos Shops!!! at the end of the day THEY ALL HATE YOU!!!

Dont blame the Dominicans or even the Koreans. They’re just trying to make a buck like everybody else. That’s how commerce and capitalism works. Sometimes you gotta play the price wars game. Blame the customers for not supporting black American businesses. They want everything for a dollar. Alot of them are hypocrites. They say they’re pro-black but run to the Korean or Dominicans’ store for their weaves because it’s a few dollars cheaper. You’ve all seen the doc**entaries. Not just the Chris Rock one but the other one on YouTube. The Koreans try to capitalize and monopolize the market on products that are strictly for blacks. They don’t want us involved in the business. Want us dependent on them. Sometimes you gotta dig a little deeper for your people or we’ll just be an ATM for everybody else.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Varicity/ Varicity

Please keep in mind that Dominicans are partly of black heritage. My experience with Black Salons vs Dominican Salons is as follows:

The Dominican hair dressers wash my hair 3 – 4 times.

My hair has grown faster since I have been patronizing their salons.

They pay more attention to what your wishes are.

My hair looks very healthy and shiny with no heavy oils added.

I am not in the salon more than 2 1/2 hours.

But, it does get to be annoying when they do not talk English & the TV shows only spanish stations. I make sure I bring a book to read.

    The Black hair dresses:

Administer conditioners & oils that are not suitable for my hair texture.

They leave my hair styled nicely, but it does not stay.

When I have requested for my hair to be cut, they cut too much & give a style that I did not request.

I have been in the Black salons for more than 6 hours!!

But, I desperately wish I can find a black hairstylist that pays more attention to the customers needs including lower costs. Plus I can communicate verbally with them.

Dominicans and african americans are two different things. We’re always trying to claim everybody. Most latinos don’t want anything to do with us whether they have black heritage or not. Most white americans have a little black in them too. Dominicans certainly aren’t sharing their money and commerce with us. At the end of the day when we start acting up or find ourselves discriminated against, latinos distance themselves from us and nobody else associates latinos with black people but black people. Even Sammy Sosa’s trying to whitewash himself.

There are some ridiculous comments here. Okay for one. True many dominicans do not like african american blacks although they look just like us. I’ve heard this directly from my latina friends. But hey there are people all over the world who do not like somebody or another for some reason. Its going to be situational. This hair thing is ridiculous. So many of you are making your experience to be all in all. There are thousands of excellent black hair stylist who do a wonderful job, don’t over book, are friendly and customer service oriented. There are thousands that suck. Hey this is just the way most businesses works some are great, some are so so and some are just horrible. Do your due dilligence and move on. Hey Michelle Obama has her a great black stylist whoop whoop. Now Dominican salons versus traditional black owned salons who cares. Did you all think that as people of african descent mixed and blended and beautiful wouldn’t have hair textures as different and diverse as their are flowers in the fields. Some products, styling methods and tools are going to better for some than others. Pick what works for you- trial and error duh. All kinky hair isn’t the same and all silky hair, naturally straight, naturally wavy with small tight curls or big fat locks are all not the same. Hair is unique based on your body chemistry, heredity, hormones, overall health. So people stop tripping find what works for you and keep your mouth shut. No need to knock any body. I personally have several different stylist in my arsenal – african american black, dominican black however they classify themselves because that is still a little confusing but I really don’t care, but the best stylist I have who is a dye job master is my latina sister Glory from El Salvador. JUST GO SOMEWHERE THAT SUITS YOU AND SHUT UP and stop bashing. Ya’ll all are making me sick its individual people. INDIVIDUAL. I am a capitalist so all shops whoever they are run by need to run their businesses and not their mouths. But I do believe a lot of shops where individual do not speak any english there is a lot of disparaging things said about clients black or otherwise. For those shop owners and workers watch out alot of us black people and white people do speak foreign languages HAH – Spanish, French, Koren, Chinese, all of that -don’t underestimate and if you ever feel disrespected any where you go by any body for any reason don’t go there – ahhh the beauty of capitalism gives us all that choice. So with that I’m going to go get my hair did. :)
