Here’s a Music Video I Did With Some of My Former Students in the South Bronx About the Drop Out Crisis

The Movement: Droppin Out

Recently, President Barack Obama pledged his efforts as well as $900 million to stop the national high school drop out crisis. The efforts of one leader and money are not enough to stop the problem, but it is a start.

The current education system offers no skills or career opportunities to the many minority students who occupy our inner city schools. While some may blame it on the “culture” of African Americans and our inner city, it is a problem created by the American educational students, not African American children.

We’ve seen the example of the British twins who set records on the National exam that led them to be the first children of their age admitted to high school. Their father gave the credit to a program that helps inner city children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and not to some sort of genius gene that allowed them to exceed academically. Surely if the U.S. had more programs like the ones in England, more African American students would have the chance to meet their academic accolades.

The urban education crisis is hardly a new one for years the American government has neglected the educational needs of the poor African Americans and Latinos who occupy many of our city centers.

It is no coincidence that the cities with the highest drop out rates also have the highest crime rates and highest murder rates. Students who are unable to obtain quality educations find opportunities in the world of drugs and crime. The cycle continues from one generation to another, in poor neighborhoods with poor schools plagued by by crime and no opportunity gives birth to another generation with the same problem.

Bailing out the urban educational system is not just a money problem. For too many years Americans have fought against things, communism, drugs poverty isn’t it time to fight for something? If Americans are to solve this problem first we must realize what a major problem it is and realize that the future of our country is at stake. As in most problems the solution must come from hard work, innovation as well as funding.

By baling out the urban education system we would not only reduce the crime rate, relieve our overcrowded jails and provide jobs for inner cities, we will also be breaking the cycle that keeps poor people of color in the same neighborhoods, repeating the same cycles of violence, drugs and poverty.

We have seen the heights a person of color can reach when given the proper education and opportunities in Barack Obama. How many future leaders, innovators, artists and businessman turn to crime or despair because of a lack of educational opportunities.

As someone who has worked in the some of the worst schools in Roxbury, Dorchester and the South Bronx, I’ve seen the overcrowded classrooms, the over-stressed, unprepared teachers, the metal detectors at the door, the gangs and lack of art and athletic programs to keep students interested in school. However I’ve also seen the desire to learn, the thirst for knowledge and the belief in the USA as a beacon of opportunity.

In Baltimore, students went on a hunger strike to protest the cuts in after school programs. John McCain said one thing that I agreed with during the campaign and that was that education is the civil rights issue of the 21st century. While de jure segregation has been gone for more then 50 years from our public school system, the system is still inherently separate and unequal.

The few blacks and latinos lucky enough to live in neighborhoods with decent school systems have a fair chance at the American dream, the masses who are trapped in inner cities with few routes out. Because property taxes fund school systems, rich neighborhoods get lots of money to fund their schools while poor neighborhoods are forced to suffer, creating a class and race based form of de facto segregation.

Bailing out the urban education system will take more than money. It will take people willing to sacrifice and believe in the future of this country. If Obama can inspire people to work for him to get elected hopefully he will be able to inspire people to follow his lead and work as community organizers in urban neighborhoods.

Here’s some of the national High school Drop out Rates According to The Wall St. Journal

Baltimore: 65% of all students drop out

Chicago: 45% of all students drop out

Columbus: 60% of all students drop out

Detroit: 75% of all students drop out

Los Angeles: 43% of all students drop out

New York: 53% of all students drop out

Great Article, I’ve been saying this for a long time, I believe we are in this situation of a recession because of the lack of education. I live in Detroit, went to Detroit Public schools, and I can say that it is a problem, and it starts at home.

Another thing they can do is stop giving all these immigrants huge tax breaks for coming over into our poorer neighborhoods, making money then paying taxes in their own tax base somewhere out in the suburbs. They could also force landlords to pay taxes to the hoods they have their property in and not let them get away with living out of state or in timbuktu and paying their taxes out there. Maybe then we wouldn’t even need to bail the schools out.

The educational system in America is broken and have been for too long. Not only have this country neglected a solid value in educating our children it has allowed a systemic process of we will advance some and not others and leave those others to fend for themselves type of education has brought this country to where it is today. We have to if not fully right the wrongs that have been made to our young people and those that have suffered because of this same “status quo”, attitude, then we can at least correct or make an all out effort to improving the quality of our educational system, the accurate information being taught to students and a seriously strong driven commitement towards making and following through on raising the bar for all students and not just some.

Casey this is pure garbage and you know it. How can you educate kids in an environment where kids are not motivated, have no discipline and have no respect for authority? One of the most intelligent people I have ever met in my life was my great aunt. She was educated in a colored school by candle light down south in the late 1800′s early 1900′s. She went on to college got a degree and became a teacher (basically one of few job opportunities that were available for educated Negros back then). She was motivated to learn. We are just putting good money (900 million) on top of bad money. The money is going to be spent on an increase in the number of teachers and an increase in their salaries (this is great for the teachers and the teacher unions who don’t want any accountability), capital improvements and equipment. History has shown that the number of drop outs will not change substantially. It has been shown over and over again that more money does not mean better achievement. My point is this; You can give every student a new apple computer and place gold handrails in the school. If the kids are not motivated, NOTHING WILL CHANGE. My solution is to use 70% of the money to pay the kids for grades, test scores and good behavior. Rank them. Kids love to compete and feel proud about earning something. It will, also, give them a quick lesson in capitalism. The harder you work the more you accomplish the more (in most cases) you’re rewarded. Set time aside during class for homework. Most of their parents are drop outs and can barely read themselves and do not really value education. Some of them talk a good game, but they really don’t value and prioritize education. Home is not a place where a lot of homework is going to get done. Remaining 30% for teachers and capital improvements and equipment. Give the teachers a raise and fire teachers whose students rank the in lowest 10% within each area at the end of every school year. This creates accountability from the teachers.

you know i’m taking statistics now…and one thing i can say about this class is it makes you question the very statistics that are given in the media…one thing is that i know here in georgia they have the state lottery which proceeds are suppose to fund Pre-k through college…but yet the state is in a deficit? i mean we are talking about millions and millions of dollars over years time…but like so many other states…georgia is about to go bankrupt…my question is what is happening to this money? because the schools…especially public schools are really crappy…and of course there’s the old cliche of the ‘better schools’ in the ‘better neighborhood’ and so on…but the lottery was specifically promised to fund the ‘high risk’ schools. i think there should be controllers to monitor where this money is going…because you can’t say the technology isn’t there for these schools because it is…

A western education iz a cancer. Europeans can’t teach Nagas shyt that’s y so many of us drop out of school

Those two twins had their own way of multiplyin and doin math as the father said and the children demostrated

Math for most african boys iz easy and fun until we get older and bored with it. The westeners make somethin that is simple complex in the educationl system

We don’t need no phukin money we need THE TRUTH. European books are loaded with lies

I learned more the last past 5 years on my own than any peackwood school has taught me and their colleges

Malcolm said only a fool would let their enemies teach their kids

First off, lets be real sensible here. If that program in Britain is really the true answer, where are all the other children setting records on the tests. You’re gonna have to show me more than two, for me to believe it’s the program, because right now it looks like those two young children are exceptions. Maatra is dead on. The current system is a cancer, and just like chemo doesn’t cure cancer, neither will throwing more money at the educational system cure it’s ills. First off, the dept of education needs to be done away with. Secondly, schools need to be given the latitude to come up with their own innovative ways to teach. Frank Mickens turned the Brooklyn Boys and Girls school around by simply demanding excellence from not only the students, but the staff. EVERYBODY, the administrators, teachers, janitors, lunch ladies, security, etc. You know who his biggest opponent was? The damn UNION. BHO is not really interested in repairing our school system, if he were, he would start by busting the American Federation of Teachers. He would also throw money at charter schools that are proving to work, on less budgets. PS now spends about 12k to educate one child. There are charted schools out here doing in on 3500, and having Significantly better results. More money isn’t needed, an appropriate curriculum for OUR children, and better management of the current budgets will solve this issue!

The Wall Street Journal dont kno what the fuhk they reporting they need 2 shut it down reporting false statistical percentages
the “Drop Out” rate in Chicago is much higher than that but they “LABEL” it drop out rate when I call it “TIRED OF THE BULLSHlT!” and thats what so many males are….the ones that I kno of will become unimpressed in the 8th Grade let alone H.S.

keep it comin i’m readin and learnin we must not 4get that this NEW Corporate Education is 1 of many reasons why they just want 2 throw money at the problem and say “hey, we did as much as we can Parents it is now your problem” because after this not being effective we are lookin at more welfare and prison roles for our youth so these Parents must act NOW!!
the Agenda for them has not changed one bit, they will continue with they agenda building Institutional Complex’s, Churches, Arab greasy fast food joints, Asain/Korean dollar stores all in our communities

Grow Up!!!!Funny how you all sit up in here and complain about a prroblem thats been going on for decades. They didn’t say the Drop out dilemma just started they said te statistics are getting higher.Ignorant people like yourselves are the first to complain and haven’t attempted to help ressolve the problem.Yeah it’s easy for you to degrade one’s solution to the issue. How many of you all are in school to be teachers as we speak. While complaining about the strong individuals who go to school to become teachers to teach your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins etc.I’m pretty sure none of you have attempted to pick up a book. How many of you all just posted what you witnessed and didn’t try to educate the children you’ve talked to how important it is for an education in America.Education is needed more now than ever for these children and the older generations as well.Just imagine what the future would be like.the blind leading the blind. And who in the heck is going to set an agenda for some children because they’re not being intelligent enough to realize education is something no one can take from them. No one is going to cater to some kids who don’t even want to be at school all day.A minimum work day is 8hrs(not including those hours that are madatory). The call center jobs are being outsourced.Just face it. In America these kids have to many options. They’re allowed to do what they want and when they want. When the problem is attacked at home and then with the school system which, has the loop holes that allow these kids to Drop Out successfully(which is so crazy)then this will come to an end or the drop out rate will decrease. They need to learn discipline and to know they are not running the show. The reason why the older generation had more success is because parents where stricter and the school system wasn’t as leniant.Yeah the author was right money is a start but, we as American people need to contribute to the community as well. We need to volunteer in the schools,go back to school if you haven’t already to learn the skills to help our children(So these so called Europeans wouldn’t just teach our kids). The older generation is the first to say that the’re to old togobackto school and are relying on these kids to lead America. It’s going totake all of us. Technology is more advanced and there are more things to know now days than before.Even though these kids have dropped out they know more than half of you and their parents. So when you guys start helping then you can complain.

i say get rid of 7th through 12th grades and begin putting them in some shyt their interested in instead of trying to force them into some shyt thats outdated and boring.part of the problem is teaching and their sorry azz mommas and daddys but even if they dont know then how will the youth know.ive dated some teachers b4 and i can tell the young ones are in trouble if we depend on some of these dumb fuchs to teach and nurture.besides the money thats alocated wont go where its needed anyway and never will, besides it never was the intent to educate the masses anyway and certainly not black folks as a whole.(TRUTH KNOWLEGE AND WISDOM)not miseducated is the key cause if you knew the truth there would be blood flowing in the streets around the globe.

Money is NOT the solution…The drop-out problem starts at home. If they are asking for 900 mil to buy new parents then by all means do so. I grew up in the same hoods as damn near everybody else, same crime rates, same everything. My advantage was my home life. Parents dont stay on these kids anymore like they used to. They let the media ‘raise’ the children instead of themselves and it doesnt help that parents are getting younger and younger while dumber and dumber. I am 31 with a 9 year old child, my neighboor is 25 with a 10 year old, 7 and 2 year old…Sounds like a recipe for drop-out! The spending of 900mil to solve this problem is like putting on brand new clothes without taking a bath..The gov’t needs to get to the ROOT of the problem as opposed to putting band-aids on everything, eventually those suckers dont ‘stick’ anymore…

MAATRA, “Go HARD or go HOME” is my new personal ‘mantra’ for you…You always bring it…

_A_, You make so much sense its ridiculous!! *Applause*

Myth, education has never been a priority in the AA community. This is just revisionist dribble talk. There was a period where the AA community fought for the right to be educated but the High School test scores and graduation rates have always been poor. The percentage of AA with a college degree has also always been poor. What has changed is the high rates of single parent homes and the lost since of community that AA once had.

Maintaining statu quo is the mission. Blk parents must realize that changing the school’s system infrastructure would take big $ outta many pockets, people would actually have to work and keep skills current, and keepin inner city schools in the 20th century is the agenda.

Blks need to take a page out of the immigrants book b/c African and Asian students are studying and learning outside of the classroom and to many of’em, the U.S. school system is just a formality. They can ace u.s. h.s. courses at 12 yrs old. They’ve got their eyes on the universities or tech schools.

Graduating or getting a GED from a U.S. high school is easy. Algebra, geometry, algebra II and calculus are not required courses. You can get that diploma by just learnng the 3 rs.

years ago most of the post would of blamed the current educational system in the black community on the white man, the white system and so on and so on looking for a boogey man, we would of been steered toward that direction from our so called black leaders. but now is a new day we now know that our so called black community leaders are in bed with teacher unions and banks that gave out sub prime loans for monetary gain.

Im glad to see we as a people are thinking more independantly , we see things for what they are and not what we were told.
OFCOURSE MONEY WAS NEVER THE ANSWER.
    1. seperate yourself from city schools by any means possible. most city schools with black constituents are run poorly with enept and greedy administrations. kinda remind you of the HBCU’s
    2. WATCH WHICH BLACK POLITICIANS COME TO COLLECT SOME OF THE 900 MILL OR ARE QUICK TO PRAISE IT AND SAY WE NEED MORE EVEN THOUGH WE ALL KNOW ITS NOT THE ANSWER. THOSE ARE THE CORRUPT BLACK POLITICIANS WE NEED OUT OF THE COMMUNITIES.

More proof that money is NOT the answer. Take note, that this district won a 2 Billion dollar desegregation court case, and one of the schools decided to build an Olympic sized/style swimming pool. This enhances the education process, how exactly? No more damn money for these failing schools. Need to put more fiscally responsible administrators in!
