As Black history month come to an end, it is important that we remember the African Americans who fought and died for America during its many wars. Few people know that the man credited to be the first one to die in the Revolutionary War was a Black man, by the name of Chrispus Attucks. During the War of 1812, Black soldiers helped defeat the British in New Orleans.

By the end of the Civil War, 10% of the union forces were Black. The 54th regiment, which was an all Black fighting unit, was immortalized in the movie “Glory,” fought a number of important battles, eventually losing more than half of their troops. Two of Frederick Douglass’s sons also fought in the Civil War and Harriet Tubman severed as a scout for the 2nd South Carolina Volunteers.

During World War I, Black soldiers were given full citizenship, although they still fought in segregated units. Many credit Black soldiers for bringing Jazz music to Europe and France.

In World War II, Black soldiers had an increased presence. The NAACP pushed for the War Department to form the all-black 99th Pursuit Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps, otherwise known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee airmen were the only U.S. unit to sink a German destroyer. Like the 54th Regiment, the Tuskegee Airmen were immortalized in a movie of the same name.

The Marines first opened themselves to Black volunteers in 1942. To the dismay of the Marines only 63 African Americans joined.

Black officer, Lieutenant Colonel Campbell C. Johnson, decided that he would actively recruit Black Marines. Due to his efforts African Americans began joining the Marines at a rate of more than 1,000 a month in 1943.

Despite the opposition to the Vietnam war from Black leaders and athletes like Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King, many Black soldiers both volunteered and were drafted to fight in the Vietnam war. Colin Powell joined the ROTC at City College and would go on to be a Captain in Vietnam, later becoming a major. Powell would go on to be National Security Advisor (1987–1989), Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993) and eventually as Secretary of State for George W. Bush in 2001.

Another Black Vietnam veteran who would go on to success was Col. Charles F. Bolden. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1968, he became a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, flying over 100 sorties in Vietnam. Bolden’s flying skills made him an ideal candidate for NASA, which he joined as an astronaut in 1981. After a long and impressive career as an astronaut, President Barack Obama name Bolden the head of NASA.

We deserve the recognition and the honor of being remembered as great men and women…but it still saddens me that even tho we gave our blood sweat and tears to this country we are still treated like second class citizens

THIS FIRST PICTURE IS MESSED UP,IT SHOWS HOW THEY USED BLACKS IN FRONT OF BATTLES TO GET KILLED FIRST!!

i am assuming you have never been in the military nor neither have you seen combat….it does not matter the color of your skin, we as Marines treat each other like brothers and sisters! we could care less of the rest of Americans, as long as we have the Corps. so no matter the color of the person in the front of the battle or in the back of the battle, we all are a band of brothers!

ALL OF US BLACK SOLDIERS SERVING ARE ALL BUFFALO SOLDIERS HOLDING IT DOWN…. FROM DAY ONE

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/JJ_lawva01/ JJ_lawva01

I have buffalo soldier tatted on my chest because I believe that Im the legacy. Im stationed at Ft. Bliss and there is a monument dedicated to the buffalo soldiers here…the sad thing though is the statue looks like a white man.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/JJ_lawva01/ JJ_lawva01

Dmar…yeah they goofed. so many civilians consider the korean war and vietnam the same thing (because they dont know any better). Also BP left out WW1, Desert Storm and the gulf war. Technically we(african americans) dident fight (for America) in either WW1 or WW2. If you wanted to fight you had to fight for the french.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/RoyalJr/ RoyalJr

These warriors paved the way for us. They served for a greater cause than mine but i serve today partly in their honor to represent them myself and us as a people to show our strength. I am the new Buffalo Soldier!

we fought in many more wars than this..face it, america was built on the back of slaves who in which fought for OUR freedoms, the same freedoms you and I take for granted..and we should open this conversation to rememberin all the soliders who fought and died for our country, not just a percentage of our military

Swank your right…but the reason this forum exists is to honor black soldiers because we(blacks) have consistently fought in wars where we werent wanted. Memorial day honors all soldiers, but without sites like BP The accomplishments and sacrifices of African Americans in the military would most likely fly under the radar. and not be counted at all.

Thanks BP for keeping us in the know about these brave men and women who gave their lives, many times without recognition and oft times with disrespect to live in the country we know as the United States. Let us not take lightly the sacrifices made yesterday so that we enjoy the freedoms of today.

First off NEWSONE I would like to note that as SWANKness tried to put it, we fought not only in certain wars that are seen here, but every war that this country ever had. Also just to let you know that in the pic Crispus Attucks (get the name spelling right), was not a soldier at the time of his death, but he was the FIRST man to lose his life fighting for American Independence. Our people need to look up more of our history. Also, not to offend anyone but I am tired of seeing the same pics of soldiers of the same companies that they only teach in some public schools. Like the Tuskegee Airman, Buffalo Soldiers, & the 54th Regiment (Remember the movie Glory?). I mean what every happened to learning about the 761st tank battalion (WWII) which fought 183 days of CONTINUOUS COMBAT. Most children aren’t in school for that many days & they fought for us! Also does anyone know about the Fort Pillow Massacre (Civil War) in which confederate soldiers systematically executed Union soldiers (white & black) who were trying to surrender (around 360) including women & children at the fort? No offense to the one who posted this report but get all of your facts & history straight before you post it. Also I have a lot more knowledge of other wars & conflicts of Blacks fighting if anyone needs information.

In reply to the comments I sent all my BP friends a comment made from the Tuskegee Airman Photo, and in my comment I put remebering those who are often forgot about of rarely spoke of if they could give their lives for us why not give them the commendations they deserve. This is why we not remember all those who fought but for those who people just wanna forget about.

    Don’t forget
    The 54th Massachusetts Infantry
One of the first black units to join the Union forces in the Civil War, the Fifty-Fourth had the eyes of the nation upon it. The company, which was largely composed of freed black slaves from various northern states, earned its fame in the July 18, 1863, battle at Battery Wagner. It was assigned the challenge of leading the assault on this Confederate fort, which was located on an island near Charleston, S.C.

    My 1st cousin

    Doris “Dorie” Miller
Famous for firing a 50 caliber Browning anti-aircraft machine gun for 15 minutes during the attack on Pearl Harbor until he ran out of ammo.Ordinarily this is not unusual except that Dorie was the Ships Cook! He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions beyond the call of duty.

While I am proud to have been a Black Soldier in the our country’s military, I am saddened at the number of people who fail at recognizing efforts by black people for black understanding.

The writer of this piece did leave off several conflicts but let us not forget the point being made and that is WE served and continue to serve despite the disillusion that America is a Free country. The country needs the help of those women and men to continue advancing. In the Army EVERYONE is GREEN.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ikidas/ ikidas

And black people, PLEASE STOP telling our black youth that the military is no place for them. College is not for everyone. How often do you see the same kids in your neighbor hood wreaking havoc? Kids who may or may not have graduated high school, selling dope and robbing and killing instead of going and finding a job, all behind someone telling them not to join the service. Even bad kids are impressionable…. Impress the need to make something better for themselves and the military is an excellent way for many of them to do just that.

I am not remebering BLACK soldiers I am remembering ALL soldiers. My grandfather fought hard in WW2 this is an american thing not a black thing. Why do I see more black people on this site with white italin mob screen names than black heroes like Powell and Martin luther king ? Be an american before your race. I visit a black soldier from WW2 in the same home my grandfather lives in and no black people visit him or take pride in him, and there are a lot still alive of all races so Black Planet stop pretending that you really give a s**t.

@ikidas Everyone is green huh. Tell that to the black girl who was raped and murdered by white racists in the military and noone was convicted. You want us to tell our kids to become brain washed robotic genocidal maniacs-no thanks. & Im tired of seeing homeless soldiers standing on the side of the road begging for food and money because when they come out they cant even get VA care and help for school & housing by the way. Lets also not forget about the psychiatric care they dont get after the trauma of having to murder innocent ppl-too many come out of it all mentally ill.

Your a product of slave mentality at its best-stop lying to your own ppl. & dont even get me started on the homosexuality that goes on-I digress.

    Hello to all,

I am a soon to be retiring soldier of 22yrs. I have celebrated Memorial Day not just for the fallen and presently serving black military members but for all service members. I agree with those that are making positive comments on what has been done here today and do not agree with those that are stuck in the past. The only way we as a people are going to progress and finally get the respect and honor that we deserve is to come together and work as a team not as a gaggle of crabs. I want to wish all a good Memorial Day and continued good tidings throughout the rest of this year.
