From The Chicago Tribune

The entire senior class at Chicago’s only public all-male, all-African-American high school has been accepted to four-year colleges. At last count, the 107 seniors had earned spots at 72 schools across the nation.

Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Public Schools chief Ron Huberman surprised students at an all-school assembly at Urban Prep Academy for Young Men in Englewood this morning to congratulate them. It’s the first graduating class at Urban Prep since it opened its doors in 2006.

Huberman applauded the seniors for making CPS shine.

“All of you in the senior class have shown that what matters is perseverance, what matters is focus, what matters is having a dream and following that dream,” Huberman said.

The school enforces a strict uniform of black blazers, khaki pants and red ties — with one exception. After a student receives the news he was accepted into college, he swaps his red tie for a red and gold one at an assembly.

“only public all-male, ALL AFRICAN AMERICAN high school has been accepted to four-year colleges”…

I like this. I am a firm believer in the fact that WE do not need to be in culturally diverse systems to prosper. Take out the race relations, the little ‘fass azz’ girls, and like Jack said, the illegals and bottomfeeders and here you have ‘success’.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/daup06/ daup06

A dream means motivation. Everything is useless without motivation from the kids. It is very diffulcult for kids to be motivated when you have a school environment with no discipline and a lack of respect for authority. Kids from India, China, Africa or any third world country have been taught (most cases) in very diffulcult circ**stances ie (overcrowding, dirt floors, lack of electricity ect…) They have come to the U.S. and are now some of the best and brightest students in most unversities all around the country. They were motivated.

lets blame everybody else to why our educational system is flawed and useless. Shoot, if it all comes down to it lets blame the undoc**ented or the bright ones calls them “illegal Aliens” like they are not human beings right!? We know exactly who ya’ll referring to, the same ones this white politicians, Neo-Nazis and KKK are complaining about, Mexicans. AM I right? the funniest ish of em all, the most undoc**ented individuals come from places ya’ll dont get to hear about nor acknowledged like eastern Europe, latin America(white folks) and Canada. After that, its people from everywhere; China, Afrika, mexico, latin america(dark complexion, India, arabs and west indies. But who get the brunts of all the negativity, Mexicans. Why? what did they do to you? oh yeah, because the government and the prison system told you so. Yet, is it their fault that they dont have the same resources like we do? yet, who do i find working the most menial and demeaning jobs that ya’ll wont even take? whos the one reacting in the same fashion like white people when we move in the suburbs? Maybe just maybe, we stop pointing fingers and actually assess whats going on within our own households, family, neighborhoods and community. find out what can we do to change the situation that our future generations are going to be in. The problem is thats too much work for most of ya’ll, so ya’ll would rather wait for your government to work for you. And when one makes a move and wants to do whats right, a lot of us tore down his/her idea rather than support it. How do I know? because I have taken that step and went to prominent African- Amerikkkans, and all I got is the talk without any helpful commitments.

I have worked with many urban prep students while volunteering in the Englewood community and they are great young men. They go through a lot in that neighborhood, especially because they attend that school. They do have a lot of perseverance, Congratulations!!!!!!

JAZZPAST, oooo I kind of hate to go here with you because I ALWAYS ‘got cha back’…BUT…

Yes, it would be the mexicans that make the ‘illest’ impact. Now first let me tell you this. I am a medical case worker, I work on salary so when I stay at work 4,5+ extra hours to be sure that EVERYONE is taken care of to their specific medical needs, I don’t get paid for it, its out of me helping those that need it no matter what the race. I have 970 cases I currently ‘work’…600 of them are ILLEGAL mexicans There are also asians, indians, and a few africans sprinkled in throughout BUT they are all properly dokumented and have been for years. NONE of the mexicans are. So that means they receive the same exact services that the legal immigrants receive yet they dont have to pay those co-pays, pharmaceutical expenses, insurance rates, coverage and taxes like they or we do. Same thing in the schools, jobs, social programs. They receive but they never have to pay out to fund things like the rest of us do.
Now on the subject of the illegals in the schools…YES! That is a truth. I can speak on that because I am a parent and I do see what goes on in schools of all levels from Elementary to Jr High to High School. I am in California (I believe you are too). A LOT of hispanic children are the leading cause of spread illness in the schools because the parents arent legally here they are hesitant/afraid to have them vaccinated properly which leaves MY own children at greater risk health wise. My daughters are the ONLY black children in their classes at school, the rest, 3 white kids and 31 mexicans. They account for over crowding and I cant stand the fact that my H.S. aged neice and nephew MUST learn spanish as a requirement to graduate, but yet mexicans DO NOT have to know english to do so. I know, from the numbers the school board furnishes after district wide testing is that 76% of students in schools here are hispanic. Of that 76% only 12% come from families of legal residents. But again, they get everything available to all others when their parents dont pay taxes. The local H.S. in my area is 59% hispanic, of that percentage 23% are known gang members. And since I have been to the school many times I have observed A LOT of the ‘riff raff’. Many of the children of illegal parents arent even taking advantage of the sacrifice that their parents have made to be here. You should know for a fact that latino gangs RULE California. Matter of fact SOME of them make it a point to expressly target black people.
The menial jobs you speak of that ‘we wont do’…Thats a ‘tired’ arguement dear, thats not our fault at all. That burden rests on the employers/owners of said companies and business’s who refuse to pay ‘living’ wages to other races as opposed to ‘slaving’ hispanic people. take out the undokumented people and those owners/employers have no choice but to step up and pay real wages, offer real benefits and incentive to ‘natural’ citizens. True they dont make as much as the average person would even at minimum wage, but it is still earned money with no taxation. Minimum wage isnt hardly livable in this day and age at all…BUT those people who have those jobs still have to pay just like everyone else..What makes the illegal residents so ‘special’? Because they came from a ‘harder’ country? Because they cant speak the language? They CHOSE to come here and try their hand at it, all i’m saying is, they should do it legally. And I for one dont really appreciate stepping out to work at 5am when its still dark out and having to walk past a home depot or lowes hardware store with a hundred leering, cat calling, perverted mexican men who are supposedly waiting for work but yet they are trying to lure EVERY woman that walks past into the back of a truck or behind a building. I have girl children, very unsafe to me. I know they didnt have the same resources from wherever they came, but just get here and do it legally.
As far as helping or aiding in my community, damn right I do from feeding absolute strangers, I help provide childcare for parents that work later in the evening than I do at no charge what so ever, I give out and BUY CLOTHING WITH MY OWN MONEY, and I volunteer at ALL three area elem., jr high and high schools as well as tutoring for those who might need it, so I do my part as much as I can but I am only one of few. So to say that the people that complain about illegal immigrants are wrong for doing so or that they arent doing anything to help the situation is a random and unfair call on your part

I’m not jumping into this illegal alien debate at all, but if we only look at the reason so many come here. NAFTA has driven many people off the farm and into urban areas, where you have too many trying to get too few jobs. Naturally, they go where they can gain an opportunity for their family. Trust me, Mexicans and Haitians would MUCH RATHER stay home. They love their homeland just like everyone else, but if greedy CEO’s backed by the USA will go and exploit these people, then we shouldn’t be surprised by them coming here in droves. I’m actually in the Bahamas now, and it’s over run with Haitians. Trust me, I know they would much rather be home, and for the most part, they are extremely hard and very responsible workers. Also bear in mind, all people contribute to local economies via, sales taxes, food, rent, clothing purchases etc. so it’s not as if they are getting something for nothing, although, they may not be paying the co pays and other direct costs like you mentioned CaliFemme23. My biggest concern though is the mixed message that Casey unknowingly puts out. He wrote last week that schools need more money, but then comes and supplies us with a story that shows that schools with less money are having SIGNIFICANTLY better results. Daup06 (forgive me if i got your name wrong) also mentioned the lack of motivation, YET you argued both our points. You seem to be at best conflicted, and at worse confused about your own belief. I’m sure if you were to do the research about this school you will find that A) they are probably spending at least half the amount per child as the Public School system (that you want more money to go to) and B)The local and National union are probably the biggest enemies of this school in the area.

CaliFemme23, I must say I agree fully with your point about it not being necessary for blacks to be schooled with whites, and in a coed environment. I have seen a few examples of all male black schools, are there any female counterparts?

I’m not sure what these young men will be taken up in schools, but getting accepted in a 4 year college is just the first step. Much more is needed, and the bar has to now be set even HIGHER. Hopefully this schools and others won’t feel satisfied with this important, but small achievement.

    @A

Thats my whole point we blame people for something they have no control over. They are reacting to what was presented to them in their homeland and out here. Yet, I havent heard that the cause or causes of these ingenious and disadvantage circ**stances for all of us except we blame mexicans for creating all this life altering events. Youre the only one that sees the true cause of the situation, and my question now is. whos going do anything about it? whos going write a letter to their councilman/woman? whos going knock on their local governments door and demanding the same equal environment for their children that white kids are getting? when are we going realized that these gangs of all races are promoted and paid by the government to continue their ways in our community? When are we going realized that for one to have peace one needs true freedom, you cannot have one without the other. All people of color are lumped up in the space to fight over crumbs, and we are ok with that. Why I say that? because I dont see no organizations or individuals thats for the people anywhere thats willing to take the stand and willing to sacrifice even losing what they have for a better tomorrow.

Do i want to do more than what we have done? yes! can we do it with a minuscule numbers of individuals thats willing to die for the betterment of the community? NO! As long as we continue to just feed off to what’s given to us by corporate controlled media and corporate control government then we are going continue to be separated, divided and in disarray. Theres a reason why they supported the NAACP and not UNIA. There’s a reason why they(government) supported WEB DuBois and not GARVEY. There’s a reason why they supported the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT and not PAN-AFRIKAN MOVEMENT or BLACK LIBERATION MOVEMENT. There’s a reason they picked MLK and not MALCOLM. Read what has Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Garvey and especially Malcolm has said in the past; and we can all see how prophetic they were because things they talked about are coming to fruition. Due to them, the government has learned tactics to make things more covert than ever and systematically.

@Pantherg08. If you do some research, you will many examples of success in charter schools. The reason why the American Federation of Teachers are dead set against charter schools because they are the biggest threat to the way they do business. If a system actually is proven to work better than the broken system, it stands to reason that most if not all parents will want their children in charter schools, thus increasing the demand while simultaneously threatening the monopoly of this huge union.

@JazzPast, you’re preaching to the choir my brother. Oftentimes we want to deal with effects and not causes. This is how the powers that be, stay in power. They project this image of one disenfranchised group, being the reason why another group are not faring well. Essentially, they throw the rock then hide there hand, and when the person turns around, they think I’m the one who hit them in the head, and then they retaliate against me. Califemme23, you my girl, but I have to tell you, those very Mexicans would be home right now if they could get a decent opportunity there. The These wall street banksters would love for us to believe that it’s illegal aliens sucking the system dry, and not their corrupt ways. Corruption beyond belief. Watch Greece right now, there is a serious spirit of rebellion brewing there. People are starting to see, that their suffering are the hands of these global bankers. JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, AIG etc. Names sound familiar? of course they do, and these are the same people behind the devastation of the Greece economy right now!

Every child has different learning needs. For some Charter Schools are the answer, for some traditional public schools, for some private schools, etc. At the end of the day, we need to give young people the tools they need to be positive active members of society. And recognizing the breakdown of the family structure it is up to us to supplement with love, encouragement, church, etc. It takes a village to raise a child because everyone that child comes in contact with leaves an impression. On a personal note, I believe SOLs have crippled many youths’ will to learn. They take away the fun in learning and it leaves many children behind. If a child makes bad grades it does not necessarily make him dumb, he may not be being challenged enough. Unfortunately, with SOL curriculums and class sizes, teachers cannot always spot the issues in time and because of the breakdown of the family parent’s are often too busy working to put and keep food on the table.

    @ A and everybody

Why is it while all world’s government are giving out stimulous money to the banks, the people of all those nations stood up and revolted in their wall street(financial establishment) and main streets. Yet, the banks in this very land continuously accepts stimulous money from the government, and noone revolts nor organizes?

This shows all of us the condition of our society has become, and if youre not scared that vey people that you call family, friends, neighbors etc. has become asleep on the wheel of life then be very afraid to how your children and grandchildren will be treated in the future, if there’s a future left.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

_A_, Good point about the charter schools ‘being a threat’. They are just that indeed. They provide for smaller class sizes, uniformity amongst the children and they offer a wider range of studies. Most importantly they offer a CHALLENGE to young minds (especially black ones, we get BORED real quick!).
Now about the illegal residents….I fully and truly understand that their own countries offer no success or progress. Again, I understand why they would come here, it presents a better alternative to what they have ‘at home’. All I’m saying is be here legally. I mean am I wrong for asking that? If they strived to be legal citizens it would help to benefit them as well. I had a client at work tell me that he was HAPPY he went through the process because he had never been able to make as much money as he is now being here legally. I know that was one person’s opinion, but I cant help but think that it might be the mindset of many others. Like I said before, there are many parents here illegally that have children that are afraid to take them to doctors for care, get them immunized, some even feel afraid to check them into school period because they, themselves arent here legally. What kind of treatment is that for the kids?

    Jazzpast, Too much interest involved…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

Califemme23 Slightly off topic here but, I won’t pretend to know the immigration laws inside and out, but don’t you have to know someone here to actually sponsor you in order to get in? I know when my family moved to NY back in the 70′s, it was through one of my Aunts sponsoring us. In fact, my Aunt sponsored a whole host of family into the states. Again not sure, but isn’t there a cap on the amount of people who are allowed to come in annually as well? One thing I do know for a fact is, a lot of these illegals who seek to become legal, get ripped off by a whole host of “immigration” lawyers, who take their upfront fees and run with it, or give them the runaround for years, and because these people fear being caught, they don’t even file complaints. I’m not really saying that they shouldn’t seek to gain legal status, because you’re right, it would be far more beneficial to them, but my only point is to people who try to make it appear as though, black people or even states like Cali and Texas are in the terrible state they’re in, because of illegal aliens draining resources (i realize you weren’t exactly saying that). The CIA coined a phrase, BLOWBACK some years ago, that talks about the unintended consequences that sometimes follows actions. That drug trade that is raging out in Mexico right now, is a direct result of NAFTA erasing many opportunities for the people. Same thing happened in Haiti back in the early 90′s and the same thing BHO is, planning for Columbia, Panama and South Korea sometime in the near future. I realize that these trade agreements can ultimately gain more US jobs in the future, but the other side of that spectrum is, for every job gained here, one is lost there, and places like that don’t have a whole lot of viable alternatives. Years down the line, most will fail to connect the dots of the blight caused by this policy, and the particular policy that facilitated it.

back on topic. Chartered schools are the only way to go. The Teachers union, Department of Education’s and the NEA’s only solution to this problem is throwing more money at it. They are a stubborn bunch, and it’s going to be a very long time before they change. How many of our babies will we lose in the meantime? lets stop the madness now. I urge all parents to send this system a strong message and support your local chartered, or consider home schooling if possible.

    peace and love!

and they say we aint smart. look at this. this is so beautiful to see. If you start kids off right with the proper foundation and stay on them they will do good. My lil girls first school was a muslim school where learning is first and foremost. discipline is also keep. it was those 2 factors from day one that my lil baby is is doing twice the work that a average student would do. When she left the muslim school to go to public school she was a grade ahead. She goes to a college prep school which is far better than a regular public school. The school is smaller, class size is smaller which gives the students easy access to the teacher. my lil mama has never not been on the honor role and plays sports at that. our kids wanna learn and if u start them off right and stay on them they will do more than u and them could ever dream.

How exciting! My cousin, who’s 16, goes to Urban Prep. It’s really 2 or 3 schools in one, the boys school is on the 3rd floor. Anyway, he mention nothing about this. But he did show me one of the gold ties that he got for his grades, He has also told me about the opportunity the school has given him to travel to Africa, the only thing he’d had to do was write an essay. It’s amazing what that school has become. When I first attended back in the late 90′s/early 2000′s, it was a hell hole.

One of the reasons I feel that we fail as a black culture is that we try so hard to blend with a culture that is not our own. Congratulations to these bright young men! The future leaders of our country.
    @ Califemme23 and _A_
I come from a family of immigrants and many laws have changed since the 70′s. In California there is a larger than normal number of illegal immigrants. When the economy was good contractors, home builders, landscape companies etc etc were excited for the cheap labor and people happily averted their eyes. It is against the law for any child in the United States despite legal status to not be in school. In some probably most states (not sure about California I live in Arkansas and assist people who are self-pay apply for public benefits like Medicaid, disability etc) Undoc**ented (or illegal) aliens are not eligible for most public benefits. I realize it is a “drain” on resources when there is a person in the hospital suffering from kidney failure, lung cancer or simply appendicitis, however, morally would you rather them stay home and die?
Also, while the people who are here illegally are committing a crime by simply being here their employers are also committing a crime by employing them. The punishment should go both ways but it does not.
I am in no way trying to condone illegal activity simply trying to explain a different side.

Look at that picture everyone, well dressed young black men, shirt, tie blazer. No braids in their hair, no ear rings in their ears and no pants hanging off their behinds. This is what happens when standards are applied to todays youth. We can achieve so much if we just guide our youth in the right direction. I hope stories like this become the rule and not the exception!

So what most of them will either fell to attend or fell to meet the requirments because they didnt really earn it in order to achieve u must put in the work and effort yourself they didnt giving out free froad deplomas and college

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/taurus216/ taurus216

shame on that stupid naive school for wastin time money and effort thinkin thay will actually achieve somethin giving away unearned destind to fell “4 year college”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gentleman-still/ Gentleman-still

Why is it when someone does something positive, Here comes someone who tries to rain on their parade? You can’t fell to attend, but you can fail by not attending and fail at not meeting the requirements that they, up to this point have achieved by being accepted to start at a “4 Year College / University”. For a class of 107 students to all make it together, they should be encouraged to focus and keep it together and they will make it thru. Maybe some people could use a little edduumaKation. You know who you are.

Taurus216, your hater skirt is showing! Also where did you learn to spell? Leave these young men alone and better yourself. Get off the computer and read a book!

I’m currently living in Detroit and my daughter is enrolled at a superb charter school. Thank God for an alternative that actually works! I’m so proud of these brothers. Any black man who can survive the madness and the pitfalls of the inner city streets and make it through college has an incredible advantage over his suburban bred, soft living, upper middle class counterpart. The mindset is different, they have very little fear and they have a better understanding of the things which really matter. Once you can combine street smarts with book smarts you’re on your way to being one helluva man, husband, father, leader, follower etc. GOD BLESS THESE BROTHERS! And Califemme…I lived in Socal for 34 years and I agree with you…

Taurus, I’m surprised we got to read your opinions? That you didn’t spill Haterade on your keyboard while you banging on the keys and shorted out your keyboard?

What’s the matter Playa, their lights are shining and only looking brighter in the future, while you CHOSE to Play in the Dark, with your eyes closed?

I suggest you play nice, perhaps their taxes will be funding your rehab and Hopefully years from now, after you’re paroled; one of these young Brothers will give you an Employment Opportunity:):):):)

Taurus coming at the Future Leaders like a broke down Yugo? How you can look at that photo and manage all that hate, only surpassed by the spelling errors, is most revealing.

Maybe no one has informed you but life is about Choices, this issue/story fully reveals they’ve made excellent choices thusfar. Your horrible grammar/self hating attitude/demeanor,… towards those whom are just like you says you’ve made some not-so wise choices?

Hating on them will not improve your past, present, or future.

I’ll leave you with some CRUEL irony, the very brothas you’re criticizing,… everyone here congratulating them KNOW if you knew brothas like them, were mentored by them, and listened to them (and their mentors/teachers),…you’d be up there in the photo with them and we’d be telling some other TAURUS what we’re telling you!

I hope your tomorrows are better than your yesterdays.

Taurus 216, INSTEAD OF CALLING YOU A DUMB ASS, I’D RATHER CLASSIFY YOU AS A SORRY ASS!! FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE, THAT BLACK PEOPLE, YOUNG BLACK PEOPLE, ARE GOING PLACES(OTHER THAN THE STATE PENN). IT’S OBVIOUS THAT THE STATE PENN IS THE ONLY “COLLEGE” YOU HAVE ATTENDED & MISERY LIKES COMPANY, BUT THESE YOUNG MEN CHOSE NOT TO BE APART OF THE STATISTICS YOU FELL UNDER. IT’S A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE A GOOD MIND………SO, GET YOURS TOGETHER, JOIN A 12-STEP PROGRAM & APPLAUD THESE FINE YOUNG MEN AS STEP ONE!!!!!!!

Wonderful story. Reminds us all of the potential our children have when we hold them accountable.

People should not even respond to Taurus216 b/c he NEVER has anything good to say and has no place commenting on education when it is evident he wasted his by the grammatical and spelling errors in his posts.
