Oh gosh! I watched this and wanted to tackle this in my blog and yet give Aboila the respect she deserves, and did not know how to do it yet.

I am ambivalent, to say the least,on how we black women are portrayed…yet I recognize I can not pay their bills. Abiola is not New York, and that is obvious…but what should thee women care about what any of us think?

I just see them being exploited for their hunger to be successful and to be real they open up and become vulnerable or sleazy and sensationalistic (a word?)in front of the masses?

I think Aboila is being broken down in front of everybody..and her personna and her real person are being touched in a way she doesn’t really know. Are these people worthy enough to let this happen? So what if she was married to herself….she was single. To see her break down and cry and the audience talke his personal narrative on her psyche as “bond” bothered me…and I thought am I seeding a unique black woman being formed in an European media caricature? What price is being paid?

I watched the show when Abiola was rejected after she asked the guy if he wanted to hang out? You could see the pain on her face and I could understand her feelings. However, the image of Abiola in which the show is portraying her is that of a woman who demonstrates a lot of unrealistic qualities that she’s looking for in a man. She comes off to me as a bit superficial. There’s nothing wrong with desiring someone who is worthy and not someone of lesser quality, because a lot of women have been settling for a long time. But to have all of these long list is kind of ridiculous and if men came to us with something like that we would be crying foul. How can we ask men to be this and that when we have not done the work ourselves. You’ve got to want what you mirror. And as for the woman who wants the Black athletes, any man who deals with her can see and hear her to know that’s she a straight up “Gold Digger” and trashy.

Abiola, I agree that women of color are portrayed in a negative way. I am a young, educated and beautiful sister of color but sometimes that does not make a difference. There are good men out there you just have to look hard to find them. Don’t ever restrict yourself to a certain race, creed or other charecteristic that makes their apperance different from yours. I second LaCessamino 100%. These women are choosing to be on these shows, no one is making them do it. I don’t even watch these ignorant shows myself, but i’ve certainly heard about them. Ofcourse black women play a role in their own image portrayed by media, and need to take greater responsibility. But i certainly would not simply blame black women cause thats the easy way to point the finger. Black men have a role to play in this as well. I mean obviously the shows in question main characters are black men. Now you have this ignarmous rapper plies coming up with his new so called reality show about so called “goonetes”, every time i turn on the tv, it gets more stupid. We have positive black women role models no doubt. If anyone forgot Michelle obama, opera who was very instrumental in Obama being elected. Even tara banks is trying to uplift women in her tv series by adrressing women issues. Its not that positive black women do not exist, it’s that the media would rather not portray black women in a positive image because of systematic racism. As a result you have black males and females alike who beleive these b.s stereotypes and play them out on tv. I said black men as well contribute to this image and thats a fact. Thats why rappers like plies can make stupid, garbage tv shows with desperate black single mothers who need the money and sensationalize and exploit them. You can do that with any women and any race if you really want to or man for that matter. There are always some women desperate and shallow enough to go on shows like this and the media is all to happy to give black women a plat form to act a damn fool. It’s nothing but tacky, distasteful entertainment that i never watch, and im always amazed at the people who do.

These women have been around for a very long time and will be around for a long time, because they used their talents and intellect to get far.. I personally dont think its fair to blame anything on VH1. Ruining black women? NO. Ruining television, MAYBE (but not really). The only thing they are doing is creating the show business equivalent of a “One-hit wonder”. As someone already asked, will we be talking about these women (and the men for that matter) ten or fifteen years from now? I think we will, but not in the light that they would like for us to. Instead of, “Did u see that new Deelishush movie?” It will be more like, “Remember that one Flavor Flav b***h wit the big ol @ss? What was her name?? Damn she had a big ol @ss!”. I cant lie though, I enjoyed the Flavor of Love shows, the I Love New Yorks were entertaining too, and I even got a laugh out of Real Chance. But my question is, how long can VH1 really beat this dead horse?

Listen to this one sentence and take it with you when you go get on the subway or are riding by a bus stop: People (sisters in this particular instance) do the fuxk what they want to do. It is funny how when black people don’t fit these stereo types that these writers complain about they are quick to call them sellouts and Uncle Toms. One article on here was titled “The top 10 uncle Toms” This is just another article playing the race card and making black people feel victimized. Okay first of all VH1 isnt doing ANYTHING to portray a terrible stereotype for black women. It just WOMEN PERIOD. From your Ghetto Hoochie to your Trailer Trash, to your Fly Mamacita, ( notice these names I just said do not have an ethnicity to them) all these women made the choice to be on there and expose their own asses. I think the point that’s being missed is that they could do reality shows about successful black women or intelligent black women or black women with a stronger moral compass……our children are watching these shows….we should expose our children and ourselves to more positive individuals that we can look to as persons to be proud of and aspects of our culture to aspire to….it’s called social engineering…and often times we don’t even realize it’s being done. It saddens me to see that we have embraced this type of representation whole-heartedly…..we become what we are exposed to…and children spend most of their time in front of the television and very little time with their parents…we spend much of our time there as well…and its affecting us subliminally each and every day and we don’t even realize it

There are plenty of reality shows that have mostly white women on the cast and they don’t act any better than the black women that are on reality shows.

TRUE STORY: One day my lil sister had a birthday party at chucky cheese, and she had all her friends their too. Then they decided to have a dance contest and this one girl who was seven years old got up on stage doing the damn stanky legg, and I’m like SMDH. One parent said ”too much damn BET. This other girl got on the stage doing the ricky bobby, another girl started that louisiana dance called the ratchet. The entire time I’m having headaches like its a damn nightmare. What my point is, is that most parents choose to control what their children are watchingand other parents really don’t care as long as they not bothering anybody, at some point it depend’s on the parent, but you have to ask yourself this, does the enviroment has an effect on raising your child as well. ”DO THE MATH”!

One thing that I’ve noticed is that their are more black reality shows on Vh-1 then their is on BET. One show that caught my attention the most was G’s to gents, cause those brothers was on their trynna make something out of themselves, but it was for money. Which ”most” people try to do. But other people want the easy way out, by becoming the interesting person out of the whole group. These people get casted in certain areas for these shows and half of them never hear about it until they hear it on t.v. Think about this if there were no black people on tv then they would complain about that, now some of these people come on these shows and we see where they come from. It is very interesting to read up on everyone’s comments. I only have a bit to say because most of you have declared a great portion of my thoughts. One thing i’d like to point out is, Blackplanet didn’t really say that VH-1 was ruining the image of black women, it was a questioned asked. Why do you all even think it was asked in the first place? Forget about how many white women are on these shows and acting a fool, for 100s of years a lot of “whites” in the “wrong” state of mind has ALWAYS wanted to keep themselves looking “good” even if it was something bad done on “there” behalf…we all know “as blacks” we can’t do the same and get away with it the same way. At one point, as a person of color, you couldn’t and wouldn’t be casted for a lot of certain roles i.e. doctor, lawyer, or just someone as wealthy and intelligent. It happens today, but not enough. Now, it is up to the person taking a role on a show or something to think about how they want to be portrayed first, of themselves and then of course how they may portray others of there same background. Sad thing is, a lot of people don’t think about what there actions may do to others image. Some ppl just want the fame and they know acting “out” will get them exactly that. It’s just a silly mixed up world and a lot of people have “forgotten.”

VH-1 is not ruining them. VH-1 is simply records them being themselves or making an ass of themselves. I love black women, but 75% of the women that end up on these reality shows, show the stereotypical black woman, and not the strong,independent, and familiy oriented women that we wish were the image of our black women.

I’m guessing that no one has seen the audition tapes of some of the people in general that make it onto these shows. Another thing I don’t understand is that they call this “reality tv” and put people in the most unreal situations. Flavor of love, rock of love, hell even the real world really isn’t real unless you’re a college student. And if you’ve ever noticed, why is it that the ratio of people of color are always drastically less than those of the white persuasion. And even when people of color make it into these shows it’s not too often that you see (let me try a decent word for it) their heritage come through on the show until someone calls them then “N” word. In the end it’s all entertainment so “F” it. There’s no more imagination in Hollywood. If people would actually sit down and write a script and other people would pay people what they are worth then maybe we could get quality tv.

However, I will say that high morals, which were once held by our grandparents (those who some of us admired, respected, and were considered to be our faithful role-models) have been completely flushed down the toilet. No one can simply deny the fact that when people are constantly been promoted on television (commercials, reality television shows, etc.) that these type of females thrive on being the center of attention. When women or men who feel they have to go on national television to find their soulmate or to lose weight, or just on tv to win money lets me know how low society stooped, I stay away from shows like that, it rots the mind and sickens the heart. TRASH IS WHAT TV HAS BECOME!!!

It is our problem as a people. VH1 isn’t doing anything that these people are not allowing them to do. They think that is ok and looks nice to be seen as being a w***e, s**t, uneducated and ghetto on tv. They think that is what black woman are all about. It sad that these women do not have respect for themselves and feel that being protrayed as such is cool, but they are just setting themselves. VH1 is not ruining anyone the black women are doing it themselves. They need to wake up get their minds right and realize what they have become nothing but sleezy trash, that carry themselves as such. I agree that the women who do these type of reality shows and music videos are grown and they are shown in a degrading light because they allow themselves to be shown in this light. I remember watching one of Katt Williams’ stand up comedy specials and he was talking about being the host of Flavor Flav’s Celebrity Roast. He said how when looking at the script and how insulting and racist the lines were, he didn’t want to do it… that was until they told him how much they would be willing to pay him to do it. He even said, the people on there said so many racially demeaning words about Flavor Flav that a few of his own daughters left in the middle of the show crying… After the show wrapped, he spoke with Flavor Flav and asked him something like, “Man, how you could sit there with a smile the whole time after all that?” and Flavor Flav said, “F that, just pay me my money, boyee!”

So what does that say? People would do anything if the money is right. They would allow themselves to be the butt of racial jokes, Black women would allow themselves to be portrayed as a w***e or gold digger or hoodrat. Instead of not compromising on their own personal worth and beauty, they will themselves under the bus in a minute for some cot cash. These are the cruel times we live in. People will sell their own mama for money.

Black women are among the most beautiful people God created. But it’s up to them to take a stand for themselves. No one can make you a victim of anything unless YOU give the ok to let it happen. Money or no money, they have to make that decision to have standards for themselves and to stick to them by any means necessary. Of course for every woman who won’t there will always be one who will, but SHE has to STILL stand her ground REGARDLESS! It all starts and ends with them. Point blank. If enough Black women band together and say no to being typecast in these plethora of reality shows not only on VH1, but BET and MTV, and any other music based channel that tends to air shows depicting Black women negatively, then chances are they might STOP creating and pitching those type of shows.
To every cause one stands up to there is sacrifice, financial or otherwise. The choice is up to Black women not a television network.

Things has changed a lot with having our first Black President and all, but that still doesn’t mean Black people won’t STILL be susceptible to being judged and insulted because of the color of our skin. Prejudice and racial stereotyping is still out there, like it or not. Be it hidden (with a heavy salary) or as plain as day, it’s always going to be there until there is no more black and white.

The question should be is reality TV ruining black people period? Abiola is one of the few that conducted themselves even halfway decent on a reality show at all. Well I live in Germany and they send some tv shows like Flavor Flav on MTV and to be honest most of the germans who have seen that show keep on asking me silly questions like; Do all black woman wear fake hair, Do they truly make everything for money and so on…
I really dont like all of these shows and it is truly sad that most of the shows have more than one season.

If any network exploits black people in general its BET not VH1 at least you have a variety of personalities amongst the black reality contestants on those shows that in my humble opinion accurately depicts the diversity in the black community. But whenever I watch BET which is hardly ever anymore I can’t get the harsh word SAMBO out of my mind and its a shame. Just my thoughts.

I think it is a fair bet to say that ALL of tv has exploited women at one point or another. As for VH-1, the types of reality shows they have DO exploit women, black and white. However, if no women showed up for the auditions then they would not have the opportunity to do so. Unfortunately women are showing up in droves and America is also watching. Flavor of Love was VH-1′s highest rated show ever! So as long as they continue to show up and we continue to watch, these silly women all looking for their 15 minutes of fame, women will continue to be exploited.
The guest host made a comment that the executives would choose the Harvard educated women over the stripper. Well, the reality is that you are going to be hard pressed to find a Harvard educated woman on a reality show with a bunch of women vying for man’s affection. Why because there is no drama there.
Now in Abiola’s case, the show was truly looking to HELP these women find themselves and love. As a matter of fact, they even sent Arian home because they felt that she wasn’t getting anything out of boot camp. She refused to take any of the advise and continued her destructive behavior.
Women have had such a hard time breaking through barriers in tv and film. It is unfortunate reality tv is slowly unraveling that. Reality tv is definitely the under belly of exploitation. Is that not why we watch it?

VH-1 exploits black women as much as black male rap artist do in there videos. Black women are degraded from the outfits they wear to the names they are called to the way they act. Just because other black people are doing the exploiting does not make it right!! As a black woman I am offended. I have a good job, car, and buying a house, but that is not what is depicted on these rap videos or reality shows. We as Black people need to stop abusing yourselves. There is nothing wrong with being educated, speaking and wrting proper english, living within your means and holding down a good job. I don’t think VH1 exploits these women. THEY EXPLOIT THEMSELVES! They want to be on tv bad enough to do whatever and they choose to act that way. If it wasn’t VH1, it would be a another netwok so I’m not buying it. And I agree with what someone else posted about it not being any worse than rappers. The women in their videos and the ones portrayed in their songs aren’t much different then the ones mentioned on those shows. I am a black woman myself and we need to hold ourselves accountable for our actions instead of blaming others. But they are not the only ones, white women on VH1 are doing the same… Rock of Love, Tough Love, I love Money & Real Chance Of Love…. the whit women are just are stupid and loud as the black women…. theses women will do anything to become a celebrity. On tough Love, I feel that Abiola is being completely ignored. The few episodes I saw she does not get the amount of air time as the other girls. When the host was talking to her about her date , one of the other girl decided to have an anxiety attack and I missed all the comments about Abiola’s date…. I stopped watching after seeing how she has not been pushed into the limelight.

Can someone please tell me what channel does not expolit blacks? If you are black and you want to be on the big or small screen most likely you are going to be exploited.

I think that VH1 looks for the most entertaining components of certain groups and put them on television. Its not about creating a bad image, its about advertising dollars and viewership.

If black women who have PHD’s and build robots give ratings then that’s what’s going to be televised.

The reason characters like New York, Danger and all those exist is because we pay attention to them!!!! If we did not, then they would not be on TV making their $$.

So I don’t think VH1 seeks to exploit black women, I think the viewer seek a certain image of black women or women in general that is appealing and entertaining, VH1 is just making $$ from this desire to see these characters.

It seems every UNREALITY show on vh1 is exploiting something. It’s basically steppin fetchin comedy of the 21st century.It entertains people especially women why is that?..When you ask yourself why would any woman put herself out there like that.The only answer is that dollar..they don’t care about portraying a positive image. They are getting paid and parlaying the moment into something else.When the shows are canceled because the execs have found a new set of clowns and the money is spent. They’ll have the video that they are embarrassed to show to their children and we’ll laugh at them and feel sorry for them when we pass them in the streets.

VH1 IS only concerned about making money and if it means exploiting African Americans they will do it. It’s a shame because it has the potential to be a pretty good channel by celebrating music history (like VH1 Classic) but just gets bogged down by airing obviously inexpensive-to-fund reality shows.

No, Papa Jon, this writer is actually right on his observation of VH-1. The reality shows they air does exploit black women and add to the preconceived notions of black women. “I Love New York” was a very tacky show. VH-1 wants America to believe that black women are violent and possessive.

Monte that’s BS. VH-1 doesn’t do anything that ISN’T tacky. See Paradise Hotel or some of these other so called “reality hook-up” shows? One is worse than the other. My point is that this channel caters to that group of teenage to early 20′s crowd that considers this crap entertainment. I can remember a time when there was only 1 tv in the house and everyone would gather around it to watch Sammy Davis, Nat king Cole, The Temps, Dionne warrick or stare at the dancers on variety shows to see which ones were black. We used to hunger to see images of ourselves on that black & white screen. Today shows like Flavor of love etc turn my stomach. Can you imagine what someone living in Eastern Europe must think about black women as a result of this crap? I once had a filipino woman ask me if it were true that the black woman was stronger than the black man? Why? Because of what she’d seen on tv. So many folks fought so hard to give us the power to control our image and look what we do in the name of “keepin it real”…Real Stoopid! And until we finally wake up and stop feedin into this poison we’ll always be seen as pimps, w***es, clowns and still not ready for primetime!

People do things to sell shows! They look for the most crazy ass heffa that they can find. That is just the way TV goes. It is funny, But in 2009, yeah there are “New York’s”, but there are also Michelle Obamas. You have to chose what image you relate to.
