As I write this letter. I will share with you all the conversation I had with my sons principal this afternoon. At my sons school, they have to wear IDs. My son has been trying to get a new ID for the past three weeks from the school store. I have personally went to the school myself, before classes start, during lunch, and after school to make sure that my son was telling the truth about the school store not being available. Today in his 2nd hour, his teacher grabbed his lanyard from around his neck and sent him to the office because he had to tape his ID together just to get into school. The principal called me telling me that my son was being suspended from school because he failed to get a new ID. I told him that I felt as though the situation was extreme for an ID having tape on it. There is a zero tolerance policy that is put into place to send the black kids home for the smallest of infractions. After telling the principal a piece of my mind and what the problem really was (he shared that over 100 kids were being housed in school suspension for not having their ID), he relented and released my son from suspension. The reason I am sharing this is because the school systems are failing our kids. The environment is not a conducive institution of learning for young black men. Our Sons and daughters are met with aggression on a daily basis. IF the proper environment is not introduced, be it at home, school, church, community, etc….Our children are not going to be the future. WE all have to become proactive in changing the current system. If all our children see is negativity and aggression at home and at school, they are doomed to fail. We all are responsible for our own destiny.But when i send my children to school, I send them there to learn something, but tell me people, how can we have control of our own destiny when someone else controls the fate? This is what Judge Mathis is trying to state that the system is failing our children and setting them up to become a part of the modern day slavery system, by blocking the very opportunities that their white counterparts have accessibility to.

First i feel like I must address what some people are sayin on here about how slavery is involuntary and that people have a choice and what not, sorry to say but alot of you people have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and are someone detached from the reality of the modern day situation that many young black men are faced with and even the situation that many slaves were faced with in the past. I believe that i was blessed enough to become a educated young black man but i was also able to see both sides of the fence. Many of you must be unfamiliar to the idea or label placed on young men a career criminals. You have young men who because of mistakes they may have made in their teenage years are subjected to the prison system for the rest of their lives, not to mention the disparity of racial profiling in a lot of cases. Once you enter the prison system the US government does everything in its power to ensure that you end up returning to prison at some point in your life. And for any of you not to be able to see that prisons, like slavery, is one (if not the most) profitable industry in the US, then you simply are not educated on the subject and honestly do not know what you are talking about. For private industry to be able to use something like a prison to generate products for prices up to 90% less then minimum wage is ridiculous and honestly they do it because most people don’t care until they are put into a position to care, i.e. being put in prison, and by this time its to late your word means less then dirt in the eyes of most people. For a judge to step up and admit this is huge and I’ve gained a lot of respect for him.

It’s a long stretch to compare prison to slavery. You choose if you go to prison by your actions in society, slaves had no choice whether they were innocent or not.

It is true that in the land of ‘equal opportunity’…the opportunities are not equally distributed, but no one is forcing you to go to jail, unless you’ve been framed or something and that probability is low.

This person will do what they feel they must do to maintain some form of normalcy in their lives. Life revolves around material possessions these days and at a young age I challenge almost anyone to not be heavily influenced by their surroundings. People may have the knowledge of what is possible but not have to ability to realize that knowledge and knowing it only takes one mistake for anyone to end up in jail, seemingly African Americans are more likely to be crucified for one mistake as I’ve known many Caucasians from my own life experiences who live lives much more conducive to crime in their earlier years but funny how i don’t know one to go to jail (not generalizing just stating my own personal experiences). But once you get in that system, its like slavery.

if you can’t afford to take care of your kid (which means not able to take off work in an INSTANT and go to your kids school) then that means you shouldnt have had that kid.

i was too busy busting my azz in school, studying, getting into the military and college, becoming an officer, getting an mba and being a productive citizen.

Racially biased, l would believe so (powder vs crack cocaine). However, people can stay out of jail if THEY STOP DOING THE CRIMES…….PERIOD. From what I see of undignfied males & females they seem to be working towards a life of containment! If Jail and/or Prison was such a bad, horrible experience, you would not see the same one’s go in and out! The sick culture of menances to soceity, deserves to be contained, put down & laid down, since they can’t/won’t learn to function in a sane soceity. You have individuals/gangs/crews/criminals who wake up each day in the mindset of victimizing another person(s) for the sake of their own survival & when it catches up with them, backfires then we got a person(s) who reverts into the VICTIM! Its interesting how you paid just as much attention to the kids in your community, as you do the rats in your community. Yet act surprised, that those rats attacked you. Did you ever think, that leaving those kids too only be given attention from the older thugs, is a main reason why they turn out criminals? Our elders have all but abandond us, than wonder why kids have no respect for there elders.

As for the topic, we can’t just complain about the problems and not actually do something about it.

We know that the vast majority of disparities in incarceration are because of discriminatory drug laws. We should be demanding the states and local governments change sentencing laws. We also need to demand that prisons be reserved for violent and repeat offenders.

We can’t do that as long as REAL people avoid positions of power and authority. We need folks running for office. We need people aiming to become judges and prosecutors. We need legislators. We need executives. We criminologists and program evaluators and policy analysts and what have you working together to legitimately challenge the power structure.

Right now we don’t have that.

We have the occasional informed angry blogger riling people up on the internet, but no real boots on the ground and legs behind the words.

Calling prison “modern day slavery” is an insult to those who were actual slaves. When you’re convicted of a crime, you lose your freedom and many of your rights. You elected to go to prison by your actions. You essentially volunteered. If they work the sh!t out of you, so be it. That’s your sign not to go back. Take the hint.

And whats all this nonsense about young people who’ve made “mistakes?” Mistakes are unintentional. I don’t know anybody who “mistakenly” robbed a liquor store or “accidentally” sold weed to an undercover cop. If you deliberately put a weapon in your hand, deliberately walked ten blocks to the home of someone you intended to rob, deliberately shot him, and deliberately took his money and ran, how can that be misconstrued as a mistake? Especially in light of the fact that many of these felons weren’t arrested right after their first “mistake.” They were arrested after their fifth or sixth mistake, and would have kept on making “mistakes” if they hadn’t been caught. Please. If prison is modern day slavery, my advice is not to change the prison system, my advice is to stay the hell out of prison.

Actually, the Prison system is no where near what it should be, If you see all the rights that inmates have then you would understand why they continue to come back. When you see an inmate get a damn heart transplant, new teeth and horomone replacement treatment for those who want to change who they are or just basically anything you can think of without paying a damn dime, and you look at your family or your friends who are living righteous and who has fell on hard times can barely afford medical for there family or what about that elderly person who has worked all there life and now is on medicare and can barely get approved for much needed medical care.. So you think they are treated poorly, I say they need to bring back the chain gangs they need to start making inmates work for there keep.. They think they are being treated wrong because they get 3 meals a day, get access to library, education, church services, yard privledges, they get a bed with blankets, television, with movie night, radio, cd’s, canteen(food) and believe me the list goes on and on and on. And you wonder why they come back s**t, its just a vacation away from reality when there lazy asses don’t want to deal with responsibility for awhile… Hum don’t get me wrong there are some in there unfairly, do to this screwed up system we have, but when will we learn as blacks that yes we don’t get treated fairly when it comes to are messed up legal sytem, so let’s not do dumb things to put us in a situation where we have to go stand infront of THE MAN, who is going to sock it to us whenever he has the chance..

You what it’s funny how people believe what they say about prison on TV… I just did five years in prison…. That’s exactly what it is now… You can keep an real Education in there you are just being warehoused… So if one isn’t made his mind up on doing right then wrong is all he knows… First off they write you up for the smallest things which in turn mess with your chance of making parole… They brought a group to Alabama an they said there were 11,000 men and women in the system that meet the criteria to be released… Alabama broke that number down to 12 people hows that so? Then when you are released in Alabama they give a bus ticket an 10.00… Come on inmates do all the work for free or the give them .25 cent an hour for some jobs so where is the rest of the money going…So if you are on the outside looking in you would believe what they say on TV. Black children are being charged with crimes that thier white counterparts are never charged with, ie shoplifting, fighting, vandalism, etc. etc. The children of black America are in the pipeline to prison. Black children as young as 9 are shackled and handcuffed in court for crimes such as getting into school fights. Many of the adult inmates roots begin in the juvenile justice system. Black prisoners can’t procreate, can’t nurture their children, realize many of their dreams and protect the black community from its downward spiral into poverty and extinction.

Write your Senators, Congressmen, Representatives and demand better schools, job training, and a full investigation into the penal system as the “new slave system” NKA prison. Educate yourself. Read, Slavery by Another Name, Douglas Blackmon. He lays out the facts behind the prison system. The new slave system began the day we were “Emancipated”.

It’s not just about the prison being called “modern day slavery” it is the “system” that sets up you to go there. Back in the day drugs and guns were not sold to teens in suburban neighborhoods. Who made guns? You know who. . .

Most of my cousins grew up with both of their parents. When two parents are in a home, usually
(not all the time, but usually) there is a different set of values instilled in them than children with a single home. Not saying that single mothers can’t raise children. My mother raised two without any help. But there’s a difference. None of my sister’s children has a father in their life. Did my sister make some poor decisions in men? Yes. The oldest father died when he was two. But sometimes men actually abandon families. Women don’t expect that! My sister also lacks education but she does the best she can.

My nephew is a target for drug dealers for recruitment because, other than me, he has no positive male guidance. I have tried and done a pretty good job in helping raise him but I can’t always be there. If he doesn’t get the proper education and parental training, he is destined for a non productive life. Trust me, I hate to say that.

My sister feels too proud to even let myself or my mom and step-father to take him in (and she has three other babies. Imagine how many other mothers feel this way.

Yes, we do have to be responsible for our responsibilities but who is there to help out, comfort, and educate after the bad decisions are made. Prisons don’t rehabilitate, for the most part, it puts human beings in kennels and makes a profit form it.

I never did understand prisoners being paid $1 a day. I think this concept would be better- Pay them their state’s minimum wage and put the money into a savings account (minus any fines, restitution or child support they owe)so they don’t have to come out of prison with nothing. If they come out with nothing they are more likely to return to a life of crime. If they come out and have something saved they will have a way to get started until they find a job. Or they could use the money to pay for school because felons usually cant get federal aid. Perhaps the victims of the crimes they committed would not agree with my opinion. But I think we’re just setting them up to fail when they get out under the current system.

Prison should rehab people who do wrong (except murderers and rapist and child molesters); I mean the YOUNG ones who are ther NOW…..they need to be nutured, educated and fill in the holes that they didn’t get from their parents and unfortunately schools, too, otherwise when a B-U-M-P(a person who’s no good to me) who’s selling drugs on the street and ask me “Hey old school, got some stuff for ya” will join the REST of the others in the pokey…..

@Jazzwatch.. Did you know that prison is worst then the streets in some cases. Prison is where alot of criminal activities, such as gangs and drug sales take place and originated.. So trust and believe that if your kid is in prison, unless he chooses to stay low- key and out of trouble, he is not being rehabilitated in prison.. More then Not he or she is in there learning how to be worst then they were when they entered..

I disagree with Judge Mathis when she says the school system is inferior and is a cause. I also don’t agree that a lack of jobs is an absolute cause either. I know many young youth who sell drugs and have two parents that work or one that works and provides them with everything they ask for. How many neighborhood kids have play stations, xbox and a cellphone? How many homes have cable TV and internet where these kids come from.

These kids have all the luxuries advertised on TV and Judge Mathis wants me to believe that these kids are selling drugs and killing each other because of a lack of jobs and an inferior education system. It is my position that the reason black men are in the situation which is worst than black women who out number black men in the universities and come from the same inferior school system is that Black men have an inferiority complex created by statements like the one made by well meaning people like Judge Mathis.

In some ways it is modern day slavery. I am a white man and I have grown up in different envirnments, enough to see black people being stereo typed and getting looked at funny because I was the only white dude in the car. I have been in black neighborhoods and been in fights to where I should have been the one going to jail but the person I beat up got laughed at by the cops but if the tables were turned I would be the one going to jail. As bad as this prison system is there are people in southeast asia and mexico who are working much harder than thoes people in american prisons who are free that are just trying to support they’re families. This website does not know what oppression is honestly, look at where your clothes are made.

As much as I respect Judge Mathis (and I really do)some of us have this complex. A complex that we can do know wrong and if we do any wrongs it MUST be racism and a “plot”. Now sometimes there is and sometimes there’s not. Back in the day I remember cats saying that their “only” choice was to sell drugs. Well,where do you think that “choice” is going to land you? @ gstyle63—Yes, I know the System first hand I have experience at a level 4 down to a minimum yard level 1 and 2.. Not sure what state you were incarcerated in but a book on the bed? come on, the person that got that write up must have been a total ass to his dorm officer.. After 15 to 20 years, a person is basically institutionalized and of course, when they get out and don’t know how they are going to make ends meet they go back to what they know best, prison..I mean where else can you go and get taken care of for free and don’t have to worry where your next meal or warm beds are coming from. I do agree with you, in the fact that no they should not put a 14yr in prison or Youth Authority, because it only makes them worse. The question then is what do we do with the rebellious youth who have no respect for there parents or any type of authority? they still have to be punished for what they do.. And that is a total cop-out to say that a prisoner comes out not knowing anything, they have many opportunities, i have dealt with many inmates who are graduating High School in prison who are getting not 1 but 2 college degrees while they are in there, and learning a bunch of skills. I watched an inmate fix the urinal in the restroom in 10 minutes, now come on. So they don’t have to get out and not no anything they choose too.. FACT– We are not treated fairly as our white counterpart, ok heard many times,, the question is what do we do to fix it, excuses just dont cut it anymore, it’s not getting us ANYWHERE..

In my opinion the best way to reduce the prison population is to end prohibition. Prohibition didn’t work with Alchohol and it hasn’t worked with the “drug war”. If people want to do drugs that is their business. We should release all non-violent drug users and drug offenders. Legalize drugs and the profit would be so low no one would sell drugs (it wouldn’t be profitable). Unfortunately the majority of the public and politicians benefit too much from special interest groups to do something so practical.

Prison is meant for some people because some people can’t function in society an we need prisons to protect as many people as we can from dangerous people.So if you do the crime you got to pay the time.

I am so tired of hearing the blame passed on to everyone but ourselves. There is one sure fire way to offset the ill effects of prison in our communities and that is by not going to jail. We blame the prison system for how it treats these criminal but we never blame the criminals who end up there. We make the prison mindset part of our everyday culture (the pants hanging off the behinds, the grown 40 year old men with there hair braided etc) and then we wonder why so many of us end up in prison. Prisons should sell these fools off to corporations as cheap labor. It cost more to house a criminal than it does to teach a child. I mean I can see how the prison system is set to profit from cheap labor of people in them, but no one FORCED people into the prisons in the first place, so technically isn’t the slavery we know of. So, in that respect, I don’t agree with that headline.

I’ve never been to prison so I do not know what is like. But I like what Judge Mathis is saying and maybe it needs to be said. We got to look at what there prisoners are told or lead to believe when entering these work programs and bettter yet when you listin to the stats that Mathis is talking about it does make you focus on the bigger problem of black men and jail.

Frankly, when my cars were stolen by black people, and when my house was broken into by black people, and when my cousin was murdered by black people, I didn’t think about the perpetrators’ situation or how they were victims of systematic racism or any other b.s.; I just thought about the fact that I and my family suffered a huge loss–especially when my cousin was gunned down by one of “our own”. The government has privatized the prison system! They’re taking over health care, banks, the auto industry, but they’ve decided that the prison industry should be left to the invisible hand of the free market. The things that should be done by corporations have been taken over by the government and the things that the government’s supposed to do have been taken over by corporations. It’s completely backwards. Apparently private corporations can’t be trusted with building roads or bridges, but they can be trusted to successfully incarcerate 2.5 million people…

Blessed Children, now that we all are aware of the Prison system and the profiteering it promotes, what are we as a people going to do to educate others of the misdeeds of society ? How can we express or even convey to them that success is not measured by how much or what you have ? vanity and the quest for it on any level should be addressed. I volunteer w/the Anchorage, Alaska NAACP Legal Redress committee. In responding to an inmate’s inquiry I discovered Unicor. This prison industry generated $885,265,277 in profits in 2009. This labor camps have a high percentage of Alaskan Natives & young African Americans. The jobs they perform used to be UNION jobs, like aircraft and automotive machine shops for federal contracts. The prisons have free labor, bigger profits. This is scary, it’s slavery. What can we do to prevent prison labor becomming an economic base and return those jobs to American workers? Tax dollars paid for UNION jobs to become slave labor. I wonder where the profits go?

Ok! Thanks Judge for saying out loud and in the face of America what every Black person from coast to coast already knew. We know the system is set up for you to fail. If you’re a felon you can’t even get federal student financial assistance to go to school. We know its set up for people to repeat and repeat and repeat. The simplest thing could be a violation of probation and force any child, man, woman or whatever to slip and fall back into the gates of that hell. We know that.

What’s the answer to stopping the cycle? Its bigger than we think. Those who encourage the separation of family (i.e. gay marriage and single parent households) where the greatest foundation for a person’s stability takes place; the government not giving families financial assistance (i.e. Welfare) if a man is in the home forcing the man out just so the kids can get bread and water; the Welfare income rate being so low that if you work at all you damn near don’t qualify for help leading you to believe you’d be better off at home not working making more babies than actually bettering yourself at a job or school; fathers not being fathers for their children and leaving them to women to raise; women not being responsible enough to choose the right mate to have offspring with and having to many offspring’s with too many men.

The cycle begins with you. If you are not a part of the solution you’re a part of the problem. The system is the man, the man wants you to fail, he’s greedy and his bottom-line is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

No, my mother wasn’t on drugs but she was emotionally and verbally abusive at times. My father was not in my life. When he did come around he was drunk, high or trying to hurt my mother physically. My own mother called me stupid, dumb, ugly, told me I would never be anything. I was molested beginning at the age of 8yrs old. Then to add to my depressed state I had to add being a black male living in the hood confused regarding his sexuality because of said molestation. I lived a block away from where drugs were sold, gangs were bangin’ and the prostitutes hung out. However, I am 32yrs old, no children, never arrested, no record, and live peaceably among others. Although my home life wasn’t the best I knew I wanted better and drugs, robbing, stealing, nor killing was going to make it better.
The issues we have is because of US- not the white man. What happened to us being a community, a family? What happened to us taking care of the next door neighbor’s kids when their mother and/or father couldn’t? As a matter of fact how many of these unfortunate children that you are speaking about are living in your house? My grandmother had 10 children but raised 10 times more than that in her small town in Florida. I met a young man in a club way in Rochester, NY who was raised by my grandmother and he told me how he loved her for taking care of him when his mother couldn’t.
So, again you hating the white man or disliking us for NOT using excuses still has fell on deaf keys!!!

Crime is a byproduct of poverty. This is true no mater were you go on the earth or what time period you are in. I don’t understand why people t think this rule don’t apply to blacks. @Alishakel There’s no IF. I know people in the prison at Big Sandy Kentucky who are paid $0.16/hr that’s (SIXTEEN CENTS AN HOUR) no matter what type of work they do.
If they want to better themselves they have to rely on other inmates to teach a GED class.
There is no vocational training.
The computers have no printer or way of saving any information and of course no internet access. So they have to write out by hand whatever they are working on.
When the FDA does a food recall that’s one of the places the tainted or spoiled food ends up.
When I was younger I would have sworm people was making this stuff up.

The inmates eat food that was meant to be thrown away. Who knows where the good stuff ends up.
Then they give up almost free labor for whoever is close to the commanding officers.
The inmates cant even complain much.
If they file a complaint about something illegal it’s either torn up before it gets mailed out or it’s forwarded to the same people they are complaining about then of course they get a few months in the hole or something equally harsh.
