A lot of folks don’t have a game plan of how to survive in a legit way so they do the predictable thing, get caught and get free room and board, free gym membership, satellite TV, free education and a job… All at the taxpayers expense… Something they would have never been able to get without going to jail…

Obviously these are bad choices, but we also have to consider that sometimes, these men/women don’t have any good alternatives to choose from. Hold on now brothers, I know what that sounds like and believe me it’s not. I’m in no way condoning criminal behavior or activity, but when faced with 15% unemployment rates (some cities have 50% unemployment rates among blacks) a piss poor education (that’s what happens when you outsource this service) and a total lack of knowledge of self, choices are going to be extremely limited. I think it’s worth noting that more black men went to prison under the SO CALLED first black President than any other. Basically just created a pipeline to enhance the prison industrial complex. Fast Forward 10 years and I see many of you applauded when the charmer-in-chief worked towards equaling the sentencing of crack to cocaine as if this was some great victory. Didn’t you realize that the conditions for blacks to pick up one or the other as a means of survival still existed? SMDH at what some of you are willing to consider positives coming from Raymond (Barack) Shaw!

The fact is that jail was really supposed to be jail, very few people would want to spend anytime there…

Some foreign criminals even come to america and europe to commit crimes knowing that they will get a free room in prison with three square meals a day…

@AfricanSpeech. If what you say is true, then what does it say that a country would make being locked up sound more appealing than life on the outside? Does that sound somewhat deliberate? I mean lets be real here, America and the way the economy has been constructed, you HAVE TO HAVE a certain amount of those who FAIL in order for the construct to succeed. It’s impossible for everyone to be absorbed and live a decent life, so many have to be subjected to abject poverty in order that a few can be filthy rich. It’s a zero sum game although they try to convince us it’s not.

I certainly agree that the rate of incarceration of black men has gotten out of control both by their own undoing and also by a system that has targeted us for perpetual slavery in a new form (don’t underestimate the amount of money involved in prison slave labor). I just kinda wish the author didn’t use the comparison of today’s black male prison population size with 1850′s black male slave population. To a mathematical/statistical kinda guy, its comparing apples and oranges given that the total population of african americans has increased since then. But the point made is well taken nonetheless. And speaking of stats, though they can be useful, i always wanna make sure the stats are not actually trying to perpetuate a stereotype through self-fulfilling prophecy vs. truly capturing real patterns.

To clarify. Resources are actually infinite but those who control them are able to horde them giving off the illusion of finiteness. For instance, with all the arable land in the world, there is absolutely NO REASON for anyone to go hungry, yet we have millions of people starving to death each month. They will try to convince us that this is due to drought etc but when you look deeper, you can clearly see where some areas have been choked off of water supplies which result in large areas of land being rendered useless, and those who once lived off that land, are now forced to go work for Dole, Kraft or other multi national food companies! Sick games people are playing!

Yes, this article is misleading in its lack of realistic statistics, but the amount of Black men in prison is still criminal. There are so many factors to consider with this. If we are not providing young African Americans (and Latinos) with opportunities for success, what is the likely alternative? Yes, a lot of them made poor choices, but really, what other choices were available to them? We need more resources for inner city youth programs, and drug rehabilitation in combination with life skills training. Our prison system is not designed for rehabilitation, as evidenced by the recidivism rates. Not to mention our ridiculous drug laws and the “War on Drugs.” What a farce. It’s time we woke up to this reality and spent the War on Drugs money in ways that will actually be beneficial to society instead of using it to warehouse people. Drug rehab programs as well as scholarship opportunities come to mind… Another factor is one of white privilege. When you are a member of a privileged group, you generally don’t realize this unless you happen to be remarkably self-aware. Even then, it’s easy to overlook. Harsh judgment of people of a less privileged group is easy. What is not easy is to understand the reasons behind another’s struggles.

The prison industrial complex was always a strong player with respect to the economy, but that ExPLODED under Clinton! My fault for not being as clear as I should have been.

The question SHOULD be “Are we willing to participate in a society where even ONE wrongly imprisoned black man has to spend his life incarcerated?” Remember folks, when our black men are punished, their immediate family is punished as well. I can understand _A_’s frustration and he has been correct about a lot of his claims but it should only surprise those who haven’t been following democrats closely. The president CAN NOT claim to be in our corner if he will fight the whole congress for Libya but WILL NOT confront them about this statistic.

Why is it that our beloved president only shrugs his shoulders when it comes to US? If the T-baggers can get 60B (which they will hand directly to international corporations) in discretionary spending cuts with a few revivals, town hall meetings, and a midterm election; why are we in this predicament? The t baggers are able to get more from our president than US, based on what they MIGHT think if he does what is right for US. Labels like “socialist” are pushing BHO into a clintonian position and he’s losing his most loyal base, based on how his enemies might FEEL about his agenda.

Now here are the meat and potatoes: it takes roughly 30 to 45k to incarcerate an inmate annually, it takes about 1/4th of that for probation or parole. It takes 1/12th of that to educate a college student. The country is willing to operate at a LOSS, just to uphold the status quo. Why are they SO afraid of a level playing field? In closing, I will say we cannot change the system until we change OURSELVES, for our unconditional search of assimilation, acceptance, and servitude has been just as influential to our current state as a capitalist’s quest for world domination.

@infinite_question. You know my true frustration is with our people and our failure to look at the data “fairly.” We can’t continue to make excuses anymore. Now truth be told, I don’t hold BHO responsible for this AT ALL nor do I hold Clinton responsible. By the same token, I’m not going to sit here and blame Reagan or Bush either. These ills that ravish our communities are functions of decades old policies that evolve as years go by, but that evolution comes from forces that quite frankly DON’T take their cues from the President. I can see all the skeptics fixing their mouth to call me a conspiracy theorist already, but really, does anyone for one second believe that the disproportionate number of blacks that fill the jails, the unemployment lines, the low skill/wage jobs in this country and the world is a coincidence? Or perhaps there is something inherently wrong with us? Listen, bottom line is, if you don’t think it’s a result of master planning and manipulation by hidden hands, then one must believe that we are genetically predisposed to live the way the vast majority of us live, worldwide. I for one categorically REJECT that. I believe with every fiber in my being, that if left to our own devices, we would naturally reclaim our position as the greatest thinkers and producers the world has ever known! The quicker we all start thinking like that, the quicker our problems get solved. NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE US. Us sitting here bickering everyday over whose better for us, Republicans or Democrats is like two dudes arguing over the bar tab on the titanic. Meanwhile we have young men getting injured, maimed and killed every night. We have 11 year old girls getting gang raped in parks? REALLY? Not only does the US have the highest rate of incarceration on the planet, but the racial disparity of arrests, convictions and imprisonment have become grossly pronounced. Nationwide Afro-Americans are arrested, convicted and imprisoned disproportionately. Thirty-seven percent of drug-offense arrests are Afro-Americans, 53 percent of convictions are of Afro-Americans, and 67 percent — two-thirds of all people imprisoned for drug offenses — are Afro-Americans. This is depute the fact that Afro-Americans do not use drugs at a perceivable higher rate than white Americans. – 8.2% of whites and 10.1% of blacks use illicit drugs.

Much of the voting rights & victories won by the civil rights movement during the 1960s have effectively been eroded. Nearly 5 million people are now barred from voting because of felony disenfranchisement laws. The United States is the only industrial democracy that does this.

Drug prohibition has become a successor system to Jim Crow laws in targeting black citizens, removing them from civil society and then barring them from the right to vote. If harsh sentences deterred illicit drug use, America would be “drug-free” by now. But that is not the case, and never will be. The drug war has given the “former land of the free” the highest incarceration rate in the world and disenfranchised millions of citizens. It is a cure worse than the disease.

One out of three young African American (ages 18 to 35) men are in prison or on some form of supervised release. There are more African American men in prison than in college. Thats a four times higher percentage of Black men in prison than South Africa at the height of apartheid.

Let’s look at the statistics again: (2008 – illicit drug use by race) “Current illicit drug use among persons aged 12 or older varied by race/ethnicity in 2008, with the lowest rate among Asians (3.6 percent) (Figure 2.9). Rates were 14.7 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 10.1 percent for blacks, 9.5 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 8.2 percent for whites, 7.3 percent of Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 6.2 percent for Hispanics.”

That’s 8.2% of whites and 10.1% of blacks using illicit drugs. Now look at the incarceration statistics:

(2007 – incarceration rate by race) “The custody incarceration rate for black males was 4,618 per 100,000.
while the incarceration rate of white males was 773 per 100,000.

This means that there are at least 5 times more blacks incarcerated for drug offenses than should be expected. This is clearly a gross injustice!

Whatever the exact dynamics involved, these horrific racial disparities are a direct result of drug-prohibition and are quite clearly unacceptable. This moronothon has done nothing but breed generations of incarcerated and disenfranchised Afro Americans and any citizen not doing their utmost to help reverse this perverse injustice may duly hang their head in shame.

i know all too well about this fact because i live in downtown L.A’s infamous Skidrow.Over 75% of the people are on some type of paper down here and more come out of jail every day into these halfway house type programs.

This isnt something that happened by mistake either.Whites , Hispanics, and even Asians(yes, their triad gangs are 10 times worst than any Black/Hispanic gangs could ever be) arent getting arrested in the same numbers that Black are daily.

This area is a breeding ground for destruction and it’s hard to trust anyone.Hardly any Black men in this area are working and mostly everyone has kids from the people i know.

The sad part about all of this is is that a lot of these men are really nice people.The streets and not being able to get a job have turned them into undesirable angry people.

I would say things about how i feel sorry for some, but then i would have to retract that statement .Almost all of them when they were working have had non Black women and had a more stable life before they hit the “ROW”.

Why is it they could give these other race women a good life and all the Black women get now is the left over Brothas with felonies and bad behaviors that the Non Black women dont have a use for?

Sorry for that rant, but i think a lot of black women share my point of view.Prison time has made the Black family structure go down to where the average Black woman is just as screwed as our Black male counterpart if not worst.

Here’s the scenario: Imagine going to the grocery store tomorrow to purchase an orange.

In this imaginary situation, a friend tells you that oranges are illegal.

However, this friend also tells you where you can get an orange and even a whole bag of oranges, if you want them.

So, because you love oranges that much and you trust this friend, you decide to go to that destination to purchase the orange.

When you get there, you’re surprised to learn that the place from where you purchase the orange is hundreds of miles from an orange grove yet the seller has the best oranges in town.

In fact, you’re so impressed with the enthusiasm of the seller and the quality of the orange that you ask the seller “Where did you get it from, who gave it to you?”

To your surprise, the seller suddenly becomes violent and threatens to kill you! All for asking a simple question about an orange.

You manage to talk yourself out of the situation and scurry home. Eventually, you eat the orange.

After a while, you start thinking about the situation. It occurs to you that in order to produce an orange, a lot of things have to happen:

1. Someone has to buy orange seeds.
2. The seeds have to be planted by someone and watered, nurtured, until the orange grows.
3. The land in which the seed is planted has to purchased and owned by someone.
4. Someone picked a lot of oranges and then packaged them to be sold.
5. Someone transported the oranges and then sold them to a distributor who then sold them to guys like the one of whom you asked the simple question.

Then…you realize that none of the above matters. The only thing that you really care about is oranges. You love them, crave them, and want more so you go back to the place to buy more.

When you get there, however, there’s a new guy there…selling those delicious oranges. You ask about the other guy but this new guy just shrugs and says “he got locked up, what you need…I got it.”

You purchase yet another delicious orange.

You’re curious though so you ask “why’d the other guy get locked up?”

He says “I don’t know. Orange enforcement agencies set him up.” You say “oh, ok…that’s too bad. He should have been more careful.”

On your way home, you come to the conclusion that you have no sympathy for the first guy. After all, he was mean, violent, threatened to kill you, and probably just a loser anyway so he deserves what he got. You get home, and happily eat your orange.

Later on the news, you hear that there’s been a orange bust in the exact location where you purchased the oranges. You feel super lucky that you weren’t there at the time. You decide that this was too much of a close call so you’re going to stop eating oranges and just go on with your life. When you look at the tv screen, you actually feel good that the cops are “getting the orange dealers off the streets.” In fact, if it wasn’t for them we would have no orange problem. You decide that you’re going to eat oranges only every now and then.

The End.

The moral of the story: If the US really wants to wage a “war on drugs” they’ll need to cut off the supply. Go after the land owners, planters, distributors, the guy on the corner selling the drugs, AND the people purchasing them. Oh, let’s not forget the money launderers who make it possible for mass street money to be moved around (i.e. this includes the Catholic Church).

The real moral of the story: For every black and brown guy who’s sitting in jail on a drug related offense, he represents at least 5-50 other people who SHOULD be incarcerated with him. That one “orange” is connected to tons of other people who, for obvious reasons, will never see the inside of a prison.

Thus, when we read headlines such as “More Black men in prison today than were enslaved in 1850″, we have to be careful not to overlook the reality that their co-conspirators are walking around free. However, if we locked everyone who has a hand in dealing up, we wouldn’t have enough room. The new headline would read “More slave owners, overseers, slave catchers, abolishonists, anti-slave activists, and hypocrites in general in prison today than there were in 1850.”

When Presidents of our own country (Obama included) openly admit to using illegal drugs, that should tell us that we’ve got the headline completely wrong. Who’s locked up? The lowest element on the drug dealing chain. Again, for every one who is locked up, there are tons of others who should be in there with him.

p.s. Just want to make it clear that I am concerned about the number of people in prison. They are overwhelmingly poor people so perhaps we should address the poverty question as well. Dr. King figured that one out and then, as we know, was tragically murdered.

“Can’t blame Whitey for everything”

Well, I’m not blaming “Whitey”, however, Racial disparity within the law exist. There is good and bad in every race, but in this country, Black and Brown men are typically given a harsher prison sentence than Whites who commit the same crimes regardless of whether they are first time offenders or not. Should we blame blame Black and Brown men for this fact? I don’t see how given the fact we are on the receiving end of this harsh reality. So, I don’t blame EVERY SINGLE White man I see- only those who hold a position of authority and chooses not to acknowledge racial disparities within the law b/c they they feel a BLACK criminal deserves whatever punishment that is given to him….simply b/c he’s a BLACK criminal.

Well, if the high incarceration rate is the result of the “war on drugs” then it just shows that a large percentage of the Black male population is selling drugs rather than getting real jobs or attending school. I wonder how many of them are doing it not for the purpose of making money to survive, but rather for the purpose of making money to appease some White woman,

I have no sympathy for the men who get locked up because they willfully made wrong choices in life; they are to blame for their own situation. Those who were simply in the wrong place and the wrong time may be entitled to some sympathy and some help but only if they honestly just stumbled into the wrong place and situation.

The plantation system aka jails, are putting innocent Black men in jail at an alarming rate. Yes, some of these negroes need to be behind bars, but a lot of Black men are in jail for petty bullshyt, while their white counterparts, get a slap on the hand and are released to their parents or put on probation.

If you don’t have a job, you will hustle to make a living. Black males are underemployed, unemployed and some of us are unemployable; therefore, the latter of the group must take to the streets to survive. It’s unfortunate, but if you rob, steal and deal, you are more than likely, will be incarcerated.

The white boy brings the drugs, guns and pills into the community, so the less fortunate brothers, will be pawns for these white niggaz. They have no choice, but to deal drugs because most of them are uneducated and can’t read or write. As stated before, this is not a war on drugs, it’s a war on Black men.

I don’t agree with the number of Black men that were enslaved during slave days! If you read your REAL ourstory, OVER 20 MILLION BLACK PEOPLE WERE MURDERED during the slave trade. And the MAJORITY of them were BLACK MEN!

Muslims enslaved us; just as well as christians: negroes should stop taking up for these muslims because these pale muslims hate us, just like these pale christians. FUK RE-LIGION!

In 2011, we as a people know that cops are crooked. Knowing this information, we should know to stay out of trouble. These companies will not hire any African American with a history unless they know someone in that company. I try my best to tell young black males to stay out of trouble. I am a pure product of our justice system. To give a brief preview of my situation. I was convicted and sent to prison for 36 months for MDMA trafficking in the state of FL. I was not a drug dealer, I had never sold any drugs and even the DEA agent told the judge that they had never bought any drugs from me. They also charge me with conspiracy to traffic. What I did do was introduce certain people to certain people. Thats it. I did not instigate the transaction. I was a college student at the time and had a full time job. Next thing I know these guys are trying to buy large amounts of a controlled substance. The whole thing was about using me to get to the big fish. Well I went to prison and as of March 27, 2011; I am still locked up. Like right now but I get out Aug 28 2011 from Work Release. F**k this p***y system. Only thing they did was make me stronger mentally, physically and spiritually. I needed time to sit down. Now Im gona beast mode this American s**t. Like free my nigga Boosie, and my dawg Chopper in the FEDS.

I was one of the lucky ones that had two parents married in the same home that instilled in me the value of getting an education, going to college getting a degree, & becoming a productive member of society, so I have done well for myself, but many of our people don’t, & when you look at many of our young people it scares me to think what kind of future they will have, especially in this changing America, where in the furture you are going to have to have some sort of higher ed, or learn some skill just to have a decent life, skills that many of our people will not have have. Great commentary here, I have read almost every comment posted and I am proud that this type of dialogue is happening. I think the overall consensus would be that if there was a lion in the street and you had NO idea and were eaten, we would and should feel sorry for you. But if you are at the zoo and see the sign that says DON’T JUMP THIS FENCE, and you do it anyway, it’s on you and I have minimal sympathy for your predicament. I do not FEAR the lion, but I respect his ability to make me his lunch. I think there are a number of incarcerated black men who got there for the same reason I get up and go to work every day.

The problem here is that in MOST cases, we must hop the fence in order to EAT, or even worse, feed our families. So drawing from my OWN experiences, there is a self sacrifice in the gamble to become a hustler. Not only do you have to juggle droughts, police, and your own people; but your own fear of becoming a statistic. I would compare hustling to share cropping (what a play on words, huh) in that MOST street dealers make about the same amount of money that a bank teller would make, when compared to the ceo of Chase, when compared to how much those who bring the stuff in this country have been making for decades now.

If you think a bunch of South Americans are sneaking enough drugs to supply a country 4 or 5 times its size, you need to get your head examined. Its a fact Minorities go ,to jail. Part of the problem is some people don’t finish school,which leads not getting a real job & getting caught up in street dramas and getting arrested. One thing that’s also a big factor is REAL(A real lawyer can do wonders!) legal representation and knowing your rights. I have witnessed plenty of arrest & have yet to see or hear the police tell the person they arrested their Miranda rights. The simple act of keeping your mouth SHUT can do wonders sometimes. Some people do stupid stuff & blame everybody else for the drama. In 1850, there were over 4 million slaves and that’s not counting the 800,000 in the Union States. Plus in 1850 there was a Fugitive Slave Law that captured and returned runaway slaves back to their owners. By 1850, the slave population was steady. Civil War ended in 1865 and even at the end of the war and the Emancipation, only 500,00 slaves were freed initially. The rest of the slaves weren’t freed until almost two years later. So by 1855, the total black slave population is estimated at still being a whopping 3,375,000 slaves. That’s 3 million people. In 1850 there were only 119 FREED slaves, according to the U.S. Census 1850-55 Bedford Almanac.

The TOTAL U.S. prison population today (blacks, whites, Hispanic, Asians, and other) is 2,224,279, TOTAL! The total number of blacks in prison is barely over 846,000.

So the notion that there are more blacks in prison today than there were slaves in 1850 is utter garbage! Apparently, someone can’t count! And NewsOne runs with these stories without even using common sense and basic math. Last I checked, 3,375,000 is a larger number than 846,00. Just because a black person gives us this data doesn’t make it true. Check for yourself.

I have to disagree with some points YOU made. Overall, you are 100% right on a few things but I see there’s a trend going on, especially on this site. It seems to me that whenever we want to place blame we pull the Willie Lynch card. Let me tell you about the Willie Lynch papers. They aren’t real! Supposedly, it was a speech given by a slave owner named Willie Lynch which gave a detailed description of slave control. It’s more urban legend than authentic my man. It’s a popular myth but even black historians have said that it is not real and it was, “made up.” The terminology of the letters reflects 20th century dialog, not 1712. Even Spelman College admits that the Willie Lynch papers is a hoax!! The truth is that the speech is said to have been given in 1712, but Willie Lynch wasn’t born until 1742. The hoax was created by Edgar Allen Poe and the word “Lynch” actually came from Charles Lynch in 1836 who was a militia commander in the American Revolutionary War. Black folks need to do some careful research and just stop accepting everything we read and hear – especially this lie that that there are more blacks in prison today than slaves in 1850. Check the 1850 Census like I did and you will find that it’s simply a lie! Slave owners listed all of their slaves and by 1850, there were way under a million slaves in the U.S.

As for Welfare states and not allowing the black man to stay in the home if the black woman is on Welfare, that’s not a black law. A white woman who receives Welfare can’t have a white man living with her either, nor any man no matter what color. And according to U.S. Stats, there are more whites on Welfare than blacks. Is Welfare responsible for the break up of white families too? Of course not, so to say that Welfare is responsible for dysfunctional black families is complete nonsense. To say that we have not fully recovered from the negative aspects of slavery may be true to an extent but that’s not to say that we have not had ample enough time to pull ourselves from that state of mind. We have had plenty of time. On a whole, we have become lazy, complacent, self absorbed, self entitled, spoiled, egotistical, resentful, angry, self victimized, blameful, shameful, deceitful, unprepared, unwilling, uneducated, unequipped and neither have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out. Our solution? To blame a fictitious character named Willie Lynch who’s mysterious “letters” did not even surface until 1970. We need to start holding ourselves accountable. Right! I find it pointless arguing with black people on the Internet regarding a great many issues. I have since then made my peace with a couple of people in here who at times have trolled this site “baiting, inciting, luring,” people to attend their self pity and blame whitey Internet party where they point the finger at whitey for EVERYTHING from the roota to the toota. And honestly, it’s ridiculous. You’d think that in 2011, some 400 years after bondage, 400 years – that would be ample amount of time to rid our reality of the negative. The Jews did it in less than 43 years and now every key player in the game of life from the Trilateral Commission to the FTC is a Zionist. We use the fraudulent yet ridiculous belief that it’s psychological as a safety net to hide our own social glitches. If our state of existence was indeed psychological, we would not be able to recognize it. Especially to the point of acknowledging it. This is not an AA meeting. Psychological conditioning is hidden. Isn’t that the point of psychological conditioning, to not recognize the conditioning? It reminds me of the scene in the film ‘Chameleon Street’ when one black man is explaining to another black man why he loves white women and he attributes (or rather blames) his love for white women on the white man by saying;

“I’m a victim brother. I’m a victim of 400 years of conditioning. The man has programmed my conditioning. Even my conditioning has been conditioned!”

Sounds like a valid argument but the truth is that the very fact that he recognizes the conditioning automatically breaks him from that conditioning because his acknowledgment of it now gives him free will. Free will is possible ONLY if you have a choice between ‘this or that.’ Black people now have choices. We have the choice to work or not work, we have a choice to gang bang or not gang bang, we have a choice to listen to Cornell West or Waka Flocka. We are not as “conditioned” as we pretend to be. We are not as victimized as we would claim to be. We are not so unaccountable as we would like to be. In fact, we are so far removed from the Willie Lynch hoax that it’s irrelevant. Whitey is irrelevant. We do a damn good job messing this up for ourselves and with little help from anyone, much less white folks. The things we whine and moan about are so minuscule compared to what our ancestors endured that they’d be ashamed of us crying over issues like ‘Why woman-beater Chris Brown isn’t treated like Prostitute beater Charlie Sheen?’ I’m sure that would make Sojourner Truth proud. We’ve come so far – yet gone nowhere!

Considering theres close to 1 875,000 black men locked up today, I dont see how this article is true when more that 32 million slaves were shipped to America. I do however think this is a thought provoking topic as prison is part of being enslaved. The prison industry is part of big business and blackmen is its main import. The prison economy is making more than $37 billion and as long as prisons continue to make money from cheap to the various products and companies that invest, blackmen will always be a target. This article nor is the theory (because that’s what it really is) that there are more blacks in prison today than there were slaves in 1850 is NOT true and to believe that is insanity. There are currently 846,000 black people in prison in this country today and in 1850 there were over 3,375,000 black slaves in this country. Anyone can find this information and I’m more amazed at the people in here who comment and (without question) accept the theory. Black people I guess rather not own up to concrete facts. We live in a generation of conjecture. Generation Blame!

Prison is a multi billion dollar industry. Prison is a corporation and all corporations has “assets” and commodities. As long as there is a supply, there will always be commodities. This country doesn’t build prisons because so many criminals need to be housed. This country builds prisons to fill it, because it’s lucrative.

But it’s difficult to convince black people that we do control our own destiny. We are afraid to death of accountability. It’s easier and more comfortable to ride the ‘blame whitey wagon’ for as long as we can. But what you and I said about having choices, that’s almost a foreign concept to black people and if you try to help or uplift or try to convince black folks that we DO have choices, they become angry with you. ANGRY WITH YOU! I once told a younger black man that he had a choice, he could go back to school and get his G.E.D, stop hanging out on the corner in Anacostia (D.C.) all night and he became angry with me! Isn’t that something? He accused me of being an Uncle Tom. He accused me of thinking I was better than him because I got the white man’s education. He said to me that I would not stand out on the corner and do what he do because I was a punk (not because I had a choice not to, but the only reason I wasn’t out there with him was because I was a punk.) He became angry because he thought I looked down on his drug slinging and he said to me – “I don’t have a choice,” while he’s standing there with a brand new North Face jacket on. It’s a strange time we live in. The more I read some of these comments, the more I know it to be fact.

As a percentage, there’s much fewer black men in prison than were enslaved in the times of slavery. 100% of black people used to be slaves and the number of black people in prisons today I think is in the 20%’s.

Plus, it’s even worse now for white people. There’s infintely more white people in prisons today than were enslaved. There used to be zero white people enslaved, but now there’s tons of white people in prison. As a percentage increase, this is much higher in white people. It’s an infinite increase.

There was NOT 32 million slaves shipped to America! Where do you get your information. It is estimated between 6.5 million and 10 million slaves sold by their own brethen off the African continent. Brazil was the largest reciever of those slaves receiving 35% of them, the Carribean was next with 65% of the slaves being shipped there to the islands of the Spanish, French, Dutch, English, Danish and Swedish held islands. Roughly 500,000 – 5% were shipped to the United States. Quit blaming the US for slavery. It was a world wide practice with the Chieftons, kings, and nobles of Afrcia that were selling them for rum, sugar, Turkish carpets, fish hooks, needles, pins. The chieftons, kings, and nobles made a fortune off of selling their own people the the slave traders. And not only did they sell their own people, but they sold the provisions to the slave traders get the slaves across the Atlantic! Read your history. Plenty of it to back up what I have said. No where ever have I seen 38 million came to America. When the WBTS started, there were only 4 million enslaved people here. Where did the other 34 million go?
