Now that the health care bill has passed the congress, it looks to start a new era of the way the USA takes care of our citizens. Still the bill can not stop America’s health problems. There is a problem with race and health in this country.

Still, there are large disparities in other areas of health between Blacks and whites. Black people are three times more likely to have a stroke and three times more likely to have diabetes than white people.

One of the major issues that divide African Americans and whites, in terms of health, is access to healthy food. Many of the health issues that African Americans suffer from come from bad diets. African Americans are 50% more likely to suffer from hypertension or high blood pressure, which, along with diabetes and strokes, is caused by bad diets.

Obesity is a major problem for America’s health care system. Treating obesity costs $147 billion dollars a year, almost 10% of annual medical costs. According to a recent study, 36% of African Americans are obese, compared to 24% of whites.

A lot of African American obesity problems come from traditional diets and lack of knowledge about what a good diet is. Another problem for African Americans is lack of options for healthy food.

In many urban African American neighborhoods, there are plenty of options for fast food, but not that many options for healthy food. A study from the University of Pittsburgh came to the conclusion:

Without access to supermarkets, which offer a wide variety of foods at lower prices, poor and minority communities may not have equal access to the variety of healthy food choices available to non-minority and wealthy communities.

While health food trends like, fruit smoothies, turkey burgers, and tossed salads and healthy supermarkets, like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have been popping up in upper class, trendy neighborhoods, they are hard to find in the working class, minority neighborhoods. Many minority neighborhoods are filled with corner stores that offer snacks, candy and very few options for health food. Soda and drinks with high fructose corn syrup are in abundance in many of these stores, while natural juices are hard to find and expensive.

A recent study by Horowitz found that only 18% of bodegas, or small grocery stores, in a minority neighborhood carried a selection of healthy foods compared with 58% of similar stores in a predominantly white area.

Fast food and junk food companies are constantly marketing themselves directly to Black people. Chains like Popeye’s, KFC and McDonalds spend a lot of advertising money to make sure Black people keep on buying their unhealthy products.

If we are truly to fix health care, we cannot just focus on treating diseases, we also must prevent them. Making sure every citizen has the opportunity to maintain a balanced, healthy diet should be a priority in whatever health care bill that the government passes. Tax breaks should be given to businesses that offer healthy alternatives and chains that only sell fatty, unhealthy foods should be taxed for revenue to fund health care.

We also need to educate children about the importance of having a healthy diet. PSA’s like The Truth anti-smoking campaign should be used to keep people away from eating unhealthy foods. Students should be given culinary classes and home economics classes that encourage a healthy, balanced diet.

There are a lot of options for healthy, nutritious, tasty foods out there.  Unfortunately a lot of these foods are limited to the rich, and are far out of reach for many people in Black neighborhoods. If these options were given to all people, our health care system would have less of a burden and all people would be happier and healthier. The fast food system in America is in need of an overhaul, not unlike the auto industry. Just like health care should be right for every American, access to health food should be too.

Politicians need to encourage businesses that promote healthy foods and tax businesses that serve food that is unhealthy. Many of the problems that burden our health care system come directly from unhealthy foods and bad diets. If the American people ate better foods and had better diets, the biggest cost of health care on the economy could be greatly lowered and we would have a happier, healthier, more active country.

We as consumers must take an active role in healthy living. These are some things I do that I encourage family and co-workers:

    1. Stop eating white sugar, Slenda and other artificial sweeteners and use natural sugar made from sugar cane or honey.
    2. Cut down or cut out white flour.
    3. Eat less or cut out meat. Eat more beans, peas.
    4. Drink water, especially alkaline water. Cut out sodas.
    5. Eat nuts,
    6. Eat breakfast,,,it can be fruit, Cheerios, oatmeal.
    7. Cook!!! Stop eating out. Stop using going out to eat as a date.
    8. Walk!
    9. Take vitamins. Visit DHerbs.com.
    10. Drink a hot cup of green tea or African red tea instead of coffee.

I’m a country girl raised on a farm and I know that a chicken could not run around the yard with legs as big as those in the stores. My mama’s chickens were not big like that. I know better. Check out Food, Inc.

Bravo Casey! We finally got a blog out of you that wasn’t asking for some handout or subsidy. Good info in this article Casey. I think a PERFECT follow up to this is if you were to do a story on the various community gardens that are going on in various cities, by people who are trying to provide good healthy alternative choices to the people who can’t find them otherwise. Even your boy 50 teamed up with Bette Midler a few months back to bring a garden to Queens. Healthcare reform starts in your refrigerator. Some exercise is in need as well.

@RhoNu-Al. Happy to see you add Alkaline water instead of just plain water. People we need to get the body PH balanced. If you don’t, your body will always be susceptible to disease. Just to add, along with the flour and sugar, cut out that salt as well. Use sea salt.

We have to stop comparing ourselves to whites and start using common sense and the statistics will take care of themselves. If people in the inner cities want healthier food then go to where it is and get it or stop robbing the grocery stores that are in the neighborhoods. People are fleeing the cities (Detroit, st. Louis, etc.) so the people that are staying have to deal with the ramifications of that. Don’t need more government, need more commen sense.

great idea about community gardens goods…Rhonu Al thanks for the tips been using some of them need to use all..Soular Flarez don’t agree with the language but %100 of the sentiment

I don’t recall ever asking for a “handout” or “subsidy” i have asked for more money into inner city education which I believe should be a right not something we should even have to ask for..I also realize that that would take a change of culture

education like health is something the government and the people need to work together to inprove

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

Social programs are handouts. Again, this keeps people in a state of having their hand, out. As far as I’m concerned, all the Government needs to do, is rein in these various advertisers from suppressing the truth about their product. Better yet, get rid of the Food and Drug Administration, and let consumer advocate groups do the watch dog duties. AGain, more money is not more important, or shouldn’t come before, better system/operation management is in place or else you will only be flushing that money down the toilet.

Please do a follow up, and let the people see, that you don’t have to be on a farm to grow spinach, tomatoes etc. Empty parking lots, lined with 100 sq ft garden beds, can transform any neighborhood into a farmer’s market.

We need to educate ourselves. About 10 years ago, I wanted a healthier lifestyle, and did lots of research on the internet about healthy eating and healthy living. I stopped eating red meat, and only eat poultry or fish a couple of times a week. I have a salad with every lunch and dinner, and if I eat breakfast, it’s typically oatmeal accompanied with fruit. I also exercise at least five times a week.

We have to educate ourselves. I’m thankful to live within walking distance to about four grocery stores, but even those without the best access can use public transportation. The walk might do some good.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/STYLISHDIVA777/ STYLISHDIVA777

Black people and white people have completely different diets. We eat fried foods overseasoned with salt. We aren’t into physical fitness and would rather drink soda than water. White people eat bland diets, although their food lacks flavor, it doesn’t kill them. They are sticklers for physical fitness and have the disposable income needed to join gyms and country clubs that offer a variety of physical fitness outlets such as golf, tennis, private gyms and spas.

We need to be more selective about what we put into our systems. We need to be educated about nutrition and stop believing everything we see on commercials about what is or isn’t good for us. Most diet foods have as many or more calories than regular foods we prepare from scratch, and contain Aspartame which is a carcinogen and will eventually cause Cancer. We are the guardians of our own bodies. The government doesn’t need to tell us what to eat. However, they should be more diligent about policing our sources of food and nutrition. People who grow and package our food should be held accountable for maintaining high standards. Our vitamins, minerals & medications shouldn’t have harmful additives that we are unaware of. There should be truth in labelling so that when a product makes a claim, it’s responsible for living up to that claim. It’s up to us to be health conscious and make intelligent choices, not necessarily based on what we like, but on what we need for longivity. We have to be more proactive about walking, working out and getting proper rest. I’m black and I’ve never had high blood pressure, high chlosterol, or diabetes. I think it’s important to limit your intake of red meats and stick to healthier choices like fish and vegetables. It’s also important to limit our fried food intake. The grease is what kills us.

Another thing to note is that if you drink ice cold beverages with your meals that also contributes to high cholesterol. As you digest your food, the cold beverage make the greases in your food solidify faster in your system causing blood clots, heart disease and strokes. It’s better to have your beverage at room temperature or to drink something hot. That tends to keep the greases flowing until they can be properly digested.

We also need to pay close attention to the little stickers with codes on our fruits and vegetables. If a fruit or vegetable sticker begins with the number (9) it is organic, free of pesticides. If the sticker begins with a (4), it was chemically grown with poisonous pesticides, and if the sticker code begins with an (8) it was genetically grown which means that some scientist had a hand in the genetic makeup of the fruit or vegetable. Ever tasted fruit that just didn’t have the right taste or texture, it’s probably genetically altered. However, some whole food stores will label their fruits and vegetables with the stickers beginning with a (4) when in fact they might be something else. That’s where truth in labelling is important so that we can make intelligent decisions.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/STYLISHDIVA777/ STYLISHDIVA777

A friend of mine who is a nutrionist referred to Shrimp as the c**kroaches of the sea. They eat their own waste and the waste of all other sea creatures. They will feast on dead bodies or garbage. And worst of all they are extremely high in chlosterol so please avoid them. Catfish, if it isn’t farm grown is loaded with fat. And I completely agree with RhoNu-Al, most chicken is not naturally grown and the pieces are way too large. Some of our meats have been grown with Steroids which eventually cause brain damage and other ailments. Both chicken and beef have government approval to be genetically altered so you really don’t know what you’re getting. Purdue is the only chicken that claims not to have chemicals and is not genetically altered and are feed a diet of corn & grains.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

Some good info Stylishdiva777. Didn’t know about the cold beverage thing. Luckily, I don’t really like cold beverages anyway, and only drink water and natural teas. It’s crazy but here in the Bahamas, you can’t find naturally grown produce anywhere. About 98% of it is imported. Apparently, back in the 80′s, agriculture was very strong, with the out islands producing many of the fruits and vegetables that were consumed in in the country. Politicians, then made deals with American companies who were getting heavy govt subsidies, who were in turn, able to ship produce here, cheaper than the local farmer could grow it, which resulted in the farming industry being wiped out. There is an effort now to get back to it, but not too many farmers around these days. As Brandip77 says, we need to educate ourselves, and with the accessibility of the internet, there really isn’t any excuse.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

Here we go again, with the black and white thing.
1)Why can’t the government/media/news/net-just report bad health problems, without it being about race?
2)It seem to me that-from disease,crimes,guns,drugs/drug user, prison, violence,in a gang,no jobs, living in low housing,on welfare, having babies, dead beat dads, obese, not healthy/not working out,at higher risk of everything, even in death. We as the black race as been placed at the top. Why is that?
When will ANY OTHER RACE be put in the lime-light or the government really report the truth on matters like this?
3)The government is the ones who approve of the food being grown here and brought here. Its FDA approved and we never know whats really being put in most of the food we eat. Now they want to make it a race thing instead of a HEALTH PROBLEM.
4)Thats what the government should show as the health problem NOT the COLOR of your SKIN. They want to take the focus off them and make it seem like its more blacks dying of health problems more than whites and other race of people. When if you look at facts-it more white people dying of those health problems than blacks are because you got so many blacks trying to look like what they see on TV.
5)This topic-is another cheap shot to bring down the black race and once again, place us front line and center of everything BAD. If your like me-you know what you are eating and how much-as well as you know what type of medicine to take, when your sick. The media throw the size and color at us everyday. So they want you to think that-we as a black race of people are losers and at the top of EVERYTHING WRONG. Which is NOT TRUE and I hope none of you believe the topic nor the report of this statement. After all look around you and see for yourself-who is over weight and sick, then think about my list above-as in how the government, media, news, and net-try to make us as a black race out to be.
Don’t get me wrong-im NOT saying our race of people don’t have health problems nor eat right-however I am saying,I DO NOT BELIEVE WE HOLD THE TITLE OF EVERY BAD THING IT IS IN THIS WORLD BUT,MARRIAGE. While the white race hold the PURE title of everything good. We are placed at the top of bad eating habits and adding all different types of things to our food-then what do they call Mexican food and how they fit their food and im sure that blacks ARE NOT the only ones who eat their food either.

Just like the people who decide our US budgets and give money away to their cronies in Goldman Sachs, actually came from Goldman sachs, the people from FDA and EPA came from the top Food processing companies.
