Roland Martin has recently criticized Alabama congressman and former candidate for Governor of Alabama, Artur Davis for ignoring the Black vote. He said Davis lost the election because “he was arrogant as hell.” Here is an email he wrote to the Huffington Post.

Davis pointedly refused to do black media. He turned my TV One show down six times; he didn’t do Tom Joyner’s show, with 8 million listeners – TJ is a Tuskegee native; he turned down dozens of requests from Joe Madison of Sirius/XM; and he didn’t do many others.

He assumed because of his skin blacks would flock to his campaign. Sparks outhustled him and worked black voters in a major way.

Any smart politician knows to shore up their base. He was advised by top Democratic strategists, from the White House on down, to solidify his base. He never did that.

National media types were perplexed and shocked because they coronated him as a rising black star. Those of us who follow black politics closely were not shocked.

I hope national media outlets would stop lifting up black politicians as future stars. They have to earn it. Going to an Ivy League school doesn’t guarantee success. Black voters are like anyone else: you must speak to them, work with them and not take them for granted.

He did. And lost. Badly. He deserved to lose for running a tone deaf campaign that ostracized and minimalized black voters.

I agree with Roland. The black up and coming politicians have to figure out a way to gain a sizable white vote but not alienate the black vote. they have been doing the opposite. they have been trying not alienate the white vote. Mnay whites wil vote for blacks if they think they have achance of winning. If they hear blacks talk down on them they will not support the black candidate. The whites that will not vote for a black candidate will not vote for him no matter what. During the Obama campaign we heard so many whites say they like what he said but just could not vote for a black. These people are a lost cause.

By the way Obama better spend some time shoring up his base constituency. He is not open to being interviewed by the black media. I cannot remember the last time I saw him interviewed by a black. And I am not saying just to be in the black media, but to give some up and coming black interviewer an opportunity. like President Clinton did when he was president. The Clinton interview on BET after Monica Lewinsky made Tavis Smiley.

I agree with Roland ont this statement. I really do not care if you graduated from a Ivy League School I do care that you are listening to your constituents back home that voted your behind in office.I’m seeing to many of these black leaders in Congress forgetting their base. They have to realize they are there for the people not for there personal gain and many have lost there way. Since they have lost there way then they need to lose there jobs and get people in Congress that want to work for there districts! President Obama better get a clue if he continues on the path he is going he will be a one term president. It saddens that Black Congress want to stay clear from Black idenities it makes me sick.

How much black media did Obama do? In NY, there is a very popular radio talk show called “openline.” Hillary appeared several times, and so did Dennis Kucinich during the primary. Guess who DIDN’T appear? Funny thing is, most of the listeners had no issue with this, because they felt that he needed to separate himself from anything “BLACK.” Remember the tribute to MLK at the Lorraine hotel? Everyone was there EXCEPT Obama. Even John McCain showed up. How come Roland wasn’t calling him arrogant?

He refused to seek the endorsements of African-American groups and voted against the federal health care plan. Davis was the sole member of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote no on the legislation championed by President Obama.

The difference I think between the Davis’ and Obama’s campaign. Obama’s campaign was inclusive and although he is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Davis seemed to pointedly avoid black organizations.

Roland Martin is spot on…I never knew that Davis did all of this. He’s stupid, and as a result, he blew it. How many times have we been telling these politicians, black or white or anybody, that you can’t just take people fro granted and “ASS-U-M-E” that we’re going to vote for you…simply because you’re Black…or you gave me a free turkey last year…or you live in my ‘hood 20 years ago??!!…WTF??!!…LOL!….Muthaphuka will know how to campaign for Governor on the next run!…Lol!…

Atleast we know he’s on his way to being just another Politician who only looks out for himself.

Also will be INTERESTING to see if he tries to get the black vote next time he decides to run.

I am from Alabama where he ran so lets get some things clear. Blacks did not vote for Davis for alot of reasons, but the primary one was his no vote on healthcare. This is silly to me for two reasons: one, if you ask most blacks how healthcare will help them they will just say it will but can state no specific reason for there belief and two, the only reason some blacks even like the healthcare reform is because Obama told them too. Blacks in this state and across the country, but in this state especially are treated like cattle expected to herd towards the first black face we see. We are not thought of as politically intelligent or knowing of any real issuses just that we vote for people who look like us or whites who put us in their comerical. Thats why when whites want our vote they put blacks singing together like in a choir or black singing togther in a circle snapping their fingers or the white canidate shaking hands with a black man who happens to have braids or dreds or worst yet they go to a black church and try to seem in touch with us. But ask for a specific plan or how they are going to solve a specific black problem like education or lack of black businesses and you will see the only plan involving blacks was to get our vote.
