The article said the stats were going to be used to bolster more economic support for single black women. If that what it takes to bolster my bottom line, then go ahead w/those crazy stats. They should expect some under reporting of income, no one likes to tell a gov. agency how much money they have.

The problem is clear. Every other race and culture realizes that speech and dress matter. Black people are still trying to drag Ebonics and tats into the office and it’s still not working.
The average 20 year old woman is with a thug that thinks he’s selling out if he goes to college or some program and gets a certificate that will be worth $20\hr to start. So they end up with a kid THEY can’t support and have to spend extra money along the way.

What the statistic is saying that they have no savings or extra money because they aren’t making just above minimum wage. Anything less than $15\hr is poor in America.

No matter how true the actual number is, this presentation is a little misleading. First, it’s the median net worth, not the mean, meaning 50% of black women have a net worth above this $5 midpoint. This does not mean the average black woman is only worth $5. Second, net worth assessments do not include everything you could sell at a profit, just what is available in accounts. It does signal we could put less of our money into material possessions and items that depreciate at a high rate, but at the same time I think the better analysis comes with finding how much a person’s net worth improves between age 25 (out of college or military, in first job) and age 50 (when a person may reach their income ceiling). Using this sample eliminates the inherent advantages that white women receive:
– Childhood savings accounts
– Generational wealth transfers
– Inheritances
A second, better comparison would couple single white women and single black women, with and without children, and married white women against married black women.
I’m no personal finance expert, but I read plenty on the subject and analyze all kinds of budgets, including my own. And all this shows is black women take a deeper plunge earlier on in life. Honestly, I would hate to see the comparison of black men to white men, but at least there is a semblance of parity between what white women earn and what black women earn. Most of us here know there is good and bad debt, and if you are suffering from bad debt trouble, find a friend or a book or a program to help you out of it. For the rest of us, don’t be hurt by this, because any argument can be made with a number.

It sounds crazy but the numbers may be right, blacks tend to love living above their means – check to check with no kind of backup plan. The article is less about the amount of money people make, but more about what is being done with that money. Obviously it does not take into consideration all the social BS that blacks go through and the fact that that BS makes it take longer for us to get things in order. End of the day if the scenario sounds like you don’t get pissed get busy and start correcting it.

Did they take in to account that most black women are YOUNG single mothers, some with alteast three kids?

Damn looking at that is sad.But I was watching Black In America and they said there are plenty of successful black women with stacks.I think that this isn’t the case for all Black women though obviously this is just some unimportant study made to make our people look bad once again.

I can believe that black women don’t have as much wealth as white women but I do not think that it is attributable to current consumption. All people are consuming at a dangerous rate.

However, the wealth disparity does nothing to speak of the inherited wealth most white women likely have compared to black women. In all likelihood even the poorest of white people had a house that was paid for handed down to them or land that could easily be converted to cash. Also, I always encountered many white people whose parents were able to pay for things like college, weddings, engagement rings, down payments on homes, and set up trusts for grandbabies. Black people as a race are just beginning to be able to do these things.

Think about how many black people you know that still pay their mom’s cell phone bill or buy their nephew the latest Air Jordans. White people have never really ascribed to sending their money backwards like that. They always understood the value of appreciating assets because they set up the system of money going forward so they’ve benefited from it most.

I sat next to a white guy on a flight not too long ago and he said how poor he was growing up and that his dad was a farmer. But I quickly countered I bet your dad owned the land that he farmed. My grandmother rented a shack on the farm my mom was raised on. When it comes to inheritance time, despite me potentially earning more than that guy, who do you think will have more wealth?

Well this is not all black women~ How was this data taken? My Mother is an HR director~ She OWNS a Porche Boxter and a BMW something or other~ She Is pulling in 6 figures (before her company closed) and has been going strong all my life…My Mom is in her mid 40′s, so I’m not sure where this data is coming from. Though I’m not there YET, this is all I’ve seen, so for this “data” to come out an try and discourage and undermined the achievments of powerfull black women is appalling!

Yeah its a shame and has been been happining for year to not only black women but men too. It’s call economic oppression, they hold you down economically so it’ll be hard to prosper. With that comes crime which you know is where a lot of black men are and its BIG BUSINESS for the companies that own penitentaries which is set up like slave plantations.

I think folks are misunderstanding the point. The study isn’t saying that black women don’t have cash, it is saying their net worths are almost zero. It’s great to have cash on hand, but that is only one element of a person’s net worth. A person can make $100,000 a year and have a negative net worth. There are millionaires with negative net worths. The study goes a long way toward saying that white women’s positive net worths are the result of inherited money and money passed down from generation. But people here have seemed to take it as an off-hand insult that black women are not equal to white women in this comparison. Because black women are trying to own homes and cars, educate themselves, raise children, support relatives and the like, their individual net worths suffer. I’m sure every black person’s net worth would increase if our trifling relatives paid us the money they owed, LOL! But seriously, every sign that we can improve doesn’t mean someone is trying to make us look bad.

I read a lot of the posts on this subject because it was disheartening news definitely. I really dont think the amount this article list is accurate but I can agree that there are VAST disparities and honestly, painfully “Wellandgood” made some Very interesting and poignant points. Black women through sometimes no fault of their own are carrying heavier burdens than their white counterparts, so accruing “Real Net Worth” is probably much harder. White men have more Net worth and statiscally are in the home with their wives longer, so as he put it, wealth can be passed to a white female more frequently and effortlessly. This study should make Black men feel bad because WE need to be more present in the home, so that sisters arent carrying the full load on their own. It has to be extremely difficult to mass a savings and net worth when youre wearing “Both” hats!!
One thing the study doesnt show…..these findings come as a Major shock, which means Black women are much stronger and adept at masking this disparity…..Simply put….What they “HAVE”….They make the Best of It !!

On some real s**t, there are a lot of Black women that don’t seem to have any financial sense whatsoever. I know so many sistas who are swimming in debt (credit card, school loans, payday loans) so deep you can’t even SEE the bottom. They get so caught up in bulls**t ass reality TV and keeping up with the Joneses that before they know it, they are BARELY living check to check. A lot of this stems from growing up in households where the value of a dollar was not emphasized, and instead were nurtured by maternal materialism.

Seriously, I mean you can have a GREAT paying job…but if you don’t have the discipline to live within and/or, ideally, below your means, then you are just BEGGING for it, ESPECIALLY in these days and times.

It’s a vicious cycle and it needs to stop…NOW.

I don’t know any women that aren’t fiscally irresponsible to be honest with you. They all spend money on unnecessary things, so brothas you’re not alone. You guys aren’t the only ones who can furnish another house with the things that the women in your fam have stored in the basement, garage, closets, etc… I think their spending is the main reason most relationships don’t last because they always need a man that makes a few grand more than their current man (so don’t ever lose a job or even make them think you might lose your job fellas). Some people have a hard time comprehending complex theories…so for some of ya’ll lemme break this down. The article isn’t saying ya’ll EARN five dollars, it’s saying that’s your median wealth. That mean’s that after most of ya’ll pay rent, gas and electric, cable, car notes, car insurance, health insurance and whatever other bills you have, you don’t have much more in the bank than five or ten dollars. This is ONLY because most of us (by us I mean black people in general), are fiscally irresponsible. If your bills equal MORE than 40% of your monthly income. You are fiscally irresponsible. Think about what the article is really saying. If the transmission on your car blew out today, do you have 2-5000$ in cash to get it fixed…TODAY?

Young black women should pay close attention to this article. However, the article is halfway correct. Relyrical did explain what it means very well. But white women are going to start off making more than a ethnic woman just because she is white. Second, the home that most white women come from can help start her off well. Meaning, they can help her with her bills to make sure she does not have to struggle. Not saying this is true for every white woman but this is a major factor that has to be considered. Third, black women can not pass a job offer to wait for another one. We tend to take the first thing that comes our way versus saying hey I’m worth more than what they are offering me. We as black people don’t tend to ask for top pay when we should, I understand that bills have to be paid and they are not pickey. But this article should help put things in perspective for young black women when job hunting.

even if there is a margin of error of 5% lets say, this is still a huge gap. I tend to believe this gap exists, because of the amount of white women you see as CEO’s of fortune 500 companies vs. black. What’s more crazy is, what does that number look like if you take Oprah’s wealth out of it? The other crazy/weird stat is for every inch taller a male is of the same race in the same job they earn $600 – $1,000 more per year, so a blk man will earn $3,000 more per year than another blk man in the same job if he is 3inches taller. As a working professional, I find this statement to be highly accurate. As another poster stated, the hierarchy of this country is that of white male, black male, white female and lastly, black female.

Black women do have a very hard time saving. Melody Hobson President of Ariel Capital management says that for every 100 dollars the average black woman makes she has negative one dollar in the bank. The American People have a hard time saving in general. We live way beyond our means and for the most part are not educated on credit and finances. Its not about how much money you make, its about living within your means, having the discipline to say no on certain purchases, being diligent in watching your money, and paying yourself first (saving). There is money to be made. We just have to educate ourselves. $1000 invested in ford stock in NOVEMBER 2008, you would have over 12,000 today. A $1000 in bank of america stock around the same time more than 8,000 today. A 1000 you say? that’s a lot of money. I don’t have that kind of money. I’ll make it simpler 20 dollars a week stashed away. Less than 3 dollars a day. A nail appointment, A hair cut, a movie date, less than dinner out. We owe it to ourselves to do better. The goal is attainable.

We really need to get our s**t together. 42,000 dollars and s**t anyway. Lets go for 500,000 dollars. I don’t believe in this but it does make sense due to the fact that we bring in over 600 billion dollars a year. @pullin713. You make some excellent points about saving. The savings rate is this country is abysmal and has went down in the last month, which led to that increase in sales in some sectors. I would caution people to take your advice on the stock market though. It’s easy to look back and see what would have made money etc. but at the time, those companies were battling for financial life. All it would have taken was for those companies to file for chapter 11, and then you would have been wiped out. The stock market is a suckers game and only people with lots of money to RISK should get involved. Those behind wall street, setting policy are the leading causes to the economic collapse the world is in right now. but in general, your advice on saving is spot on!

Black woman also get little or no support from a Black man be it father, sons or mates! White woman graduate and dad gets them a car if not before than. Go to any major city who do you see riding the bus ? BLACK WOMAN! along with sooo many other disparities. American has still not mastered even making a pair of jeans that fit Black Woman! This is funny but I believe it 100%.The difference between dating a white women and a black one are like night and day. A white women will say, “oh no…let me pay”…..Ive never heard a black women say that s**t unless I was in a serious relationship with her. Black women are so stuck on finances and materialistic things that they cant get ahead. You make 40k a year and your car cost 50k…buy a 300 dollar handbag and have 300 dollars in the bank. In my experiences, I personally see that black women are more materialistic than white women. You car shouldnt be more than half of your yearly salary! Yes, you see white women with big ass SUV’s and benzs but I bet she makes the money to pay for it…..i personally know black women who drive mercedes but live in an apt…WTF is that all about. Some of you guys don’t understand what they mean by wealth. What they mean by wealth is the money people have left over after living expenses are paid(rent, utility, food, mortgage, daily expenses). Calm_Cool_Collect is right, black women are VERY materialistic.

All women are very materialistic..and so are most men. I guarantee you, if men had babies instead of women, we (Men) would be the ones in this article.

Point is, for some idiotic reason, materialism is a staple of a large portion of Black American ‘culture’…The only difference is that men (of any race) have more of a chance to find a good-paying job than women. So it makes sense that Black women would be double-screwed..

That said, another OBVIOUS thing that occurs to me, is this: When you are figuring out averages, a lot of zeroes and negatives really kill your end result.

We could have millions of black women who are making money hand over fist, but when averaged with the hundreds of thousands who are seriously in DEBT or single mothers with no income, of course the average looks horrendous. Just the way math works.

Oh and just for reference, I know more white/latin women without jobs (and perpetually broke) than Black women.

America culture is materialistic the reason is when blacks integrated they saw they could do better without other blacks.Integration brought blacks against each other so now this black thinks he/she the shyt because of material.I don’t think men of any race have a chance to find a good paying job then any women I doubt that because I see alot of black women with good paying jobs then black men today.I doubt if black women is double screw they got treatment for that today.But the point is black women brag about how their more successful then black men.So now is they going to join us or find a way to talk bad about us again I bet it’s what’s going to happen after this die down

I see both sides of the coin. Lack of 2 parent households (i.e. 2 incomes) can be an obstacles to achieving financial success. Debt from loans because mom/dad lack of financial planning or lack of funds starts us out with debt from day 1. Let’s be hones – for whatever reason MATERIALISM is a huge problem in our culture. Too short/e-40 said: it’s cool to floss but don’t buy a $80,000 car before you buy a house. This brings to light the results of our consumption disease that leads to financial burden and ruin for so many of us.

F.Y.I. Not all black women are materialistic. I’m not – I look good in my $25 levi’s just like women look good in their $300 jeans. I was raised to live within my means. Both my sister and I grew up taking academically advanced classes and somewhat had a disconnect with a lot of the African American culture or people because we couldn’t understand how you judge people on their vehicle or clothing. If you are cool then I’m cool. The funny thing is most of the kids wearing vans were going home to their house in Topanga and Malibu. Most of the “I’m so cool” crowd of african american’s sporting expensive clothes were going home to their apartments.

Just keeping it real. This is a wake up call that we need to get our minds right.

People do you understand what this article is saying? It isn’t talking about having money – it is talking about wealth. Anyone can get money. The issue is wealth. People with money can lose that money. People who instead are wealthy are in a different position. It isn’t about wanting cars or clothes or those type of things. The point is that black women need to focus on paying off debt and saving. Saving and eliminating your debts helps you to acc**ulate wealth.

A lot of the commentors need to educate themselves on the difference between money and wealth. It is assests versus debt. Not just money in the bank but real estate, bonds, stock and the like. We are not taught about this so we have no clue how to go about it. Add that to the fact that it has been shown in studies that women of all races are less likely to invest due to fear and you have a horrible set up for financial ruin. Even black women who make good money do not invest so they are less likely to be considered wealthy. Learn about making your money work for you not just working for your money.

Some of these comments are just ignorant. All black women don’t spend their money on lace fronts. How many of the guys commenting here actually have money in an mutual fund outside of what their job offers? Some of this men hating on women and women hating on men is just childish. As a group, we all tend to be ignorant on this issue.

By history, many of our black people lack being savy in investment planning, navigating portfoliios, etc. And yes, being honest here, many of us do not invest due to FEAR of being taken advantage of. But here is something else? “Low to no interest in investing.” (pardon the pun!) It does not take a rocket-scientist to learn how.
