We all grownup together, we are custom to seeing white children playing, combing, and eating hair with out any problems that could or may effect themselves or any student. Back in the day and still now, you could like at it being a race issue or just because of some unknown event happen. The fact remains that this teacher and/or facility should be accountable for all nonsenses. I think that the parent should file a law suit and teacher should be charge with Aggravated Assault, some type of punishment not go unharmed. Okay, let me get this right. 5 yr olds= Kindergarten, 6 yr olds=1st grade, 7 yr olds 2nd grade, 8 yr olds=3rd grade, 9 yr olds=4th grade, 10 yr olds=5th grade, 11 yr olds…at least in my part of the city it adds up that way. At this point and time, we are all stressed. But she as a teacher was taught in college how to handle the children she is dealing with. I agree with Ti. The majority of black people on this forum have never experienced true racism. Our Black ancestors had less opportunities than we have today, and they accomplished more. They were denied education and opened up black colleges, had business and were inventors.

Fredrick Douglas taught himself how to read while he was a slave. Today the majority of can’t read beyond the 3rd grade. I live in a university town and black people make the majority of it residents but are a minority in the universities. The only oppression that is occurring is that which coming from self. Benz, this is a greater issue. It is symbolic of lack of respect most adults have for children,especial minority children. It is symbolic of the psychological warfare against “blackness” in the world. It is symbolic of the unconscious psychological damage that is being perpetrated against children repetitively and their self image. It is symbolic of the bonds of trust that are continuously being broken between adults and children. Is there any wonder the children are bonding together against any figure that defines itself as “authority”.

If this same child had worn her hair in the ‘European” style of fried and straightened, this would not have happened. It was only because she had braids in the style of a black child with beads that made noise that this even became an incident!

Of course charges were not filed against the teacher and of course she will not be reprimanded beyond her monetary fine. But if it were the other way around, this child would have been hanicuffed, taken to juvenile and charges pressed. Stress among teachers is nothing new, and teaching is not a job for the weak. And since the issue of race has already be touched on by other posters, I would assume that the teacher is white or other, and only because if she were black the news media and/or the school district would have been quick to highlight her race in order to dispell any rumors that this incident was racially motivated. With that said, when it comes down to it, I could care less what race the teacher is, she is an adult and supposedly a professional. At least she could have pulled the child’s hair back into a ponytail to lessen the temptation for her to play with her hair, or dang, if it was that crucial – call her parents. I like any other black person in this country have very good reasons to dislike white america based on experiences. I choose to judge people on a person to person basis. It is important to maintain the moral high ground so that it doesn’t make what you have to say null and void and give the world the excuse to further ignore what you have to say. No man or woman on the face of this earth is your enemy because of the way they look and it makes you look just as stupid as the people you attack. To TI since you are new to this country it’s good that you see what it is like over here. Black Americans have every right and good reason to dislike how the world has treated black people (in the past AND PRESENT). Assuming the teacher is white shouldn’t come as such a surprise to you. If you had a brother that was always stealing from the rest of the family every time something comes up missing everyone would turn and look at him. For him to then complain about being mistreated is stupid on his part since he made the bed he sleeps in. TI is right about one thing that is a common complaint of people from all over the world that come here: The rest of the world is light years ahead of the U.S. when it comes to education and race relations….and it is shocking to come to a place where EVERYTHING is about race for them. Whether this teacher is black or white is irrelevant except if the teacher was white and some racism is in her motives. Either way the consequences should be harsh and immediate no matter who it is.

Reading this Article was very Profound. I couldn’t even believe that the Teacher would do such a derogatory thing. That was very hail of her to do so. If she couldn’t stop the little girl from stop playing with her hair then she could have told the child that she is going to call her mother, and let her know about the situation. Lack of respect for the child, or children in general.

Threatening with a scissors.
Harassment.
Poor judgment.
Not following discipline procedures.
False reason for discipline.
Jealous of the child’s hair joy.
Animosity towards a first grader.

Wow!!! Couldn’t have been my baby at all!!! That teacher was stronger than battery acid!!! She could have done a million and one other things besides cut that baby’s hair off. Yeah, I would have talked to my child about doing what she’s told but dammit I would have rocked the hell out of that school. I would have protested (as far as the law allowed) and I would filed a civil lawsuit for defamation, harassment public embarrassment and child abuse.

i have plenty of stress i’m not going around and cutting off my student braids. i have paperwork 1000 miles long, school work, dealing with children with behavior issues, dealing with parents with bad attitudes, dealing with an agency that wants my to teach 3 4 and 5 yr olds what is 4 levels above where they are becasue the parents are still talking to them as if they are 18 months old. the list goes on and on and on but i’m not cutting of children hair because it is adding to the stress. If she worked for head start she would be ready to kill a child. and to sarah jayne the child was playing with the beads at the end of her hair that would be the same as you chewing on your hair.

Being a teacher, I can see how that could happen. Your children are HORRIBLE at school. Just letting you know. I am one of the least stressed teachers at our school. I would have just had her stand next to me for the rest of the class until she said that she was finished playing with those loud annoying beads. Why do ppl send their kids too school with those TOYS in their hair!??! They are toys. If the little girl had her “listening ears” turned ON and her mother just got her hair braided normally then none of that would have happened. Plus, it’s hair! Not an arm. It will grow back.

That child did nothing to warrant what that teacher did. The teacher broke the law and FAILED miserably in leading by example. Teachers are under paid and disgruntle and some should of never been allowed to teach at all and it’s sad because the children are suffering imagine how many more terrible teachers are out there this is only the kids who have the guts to report the teachers imagine the kids who think the teachers have the right to disrespect them. That teacher was out of line. And being a parent I went through something sim to this my son was in class and what was told to us by one of the parents child is that he asked the teacher if he could move away from the aircondition he was cold she said no so my son doing what children do he put his arms inside his shirt to stay warm so this teacher got up went over to my son’s desk told him to stand up and took his shirt up over his head and maid him sit there for who no’s how long in the cold with his shirt off…So when I was told about it I told my exwife now but at that time I said She did WHAT!!!but it was some 4,5,and some ten letter words used that day. and we had a meeting with the school and Me my ex-wife the Principal the teacher and a child addvicate on our behalf so this lady was trying to say that my son was just being out of place with his behavour And I said before or after you took his shirt off? and she said she never did that so the whole class was Lying on you and everybody is saying the same thing Let me stop there thats bringing up some bad memorries and I fill for the parents of this child and any child that go’s through any thing of that nature so she is still young and she’ll still remember what that teacher done to her my son is a Jr in High school and he still remembers it so just stay prayed up and the funnything is he was just asking to move away from the air?????

What is really going on here have we forgot whats at stake here? this child is still a victum come on now playing with her hair now when these high school kids get out of line you have police offercers to take them in and press charges why is this looked at different? Oh and they also put cuffs on children her age to we’ve took teaching out of school and we relie on the poltics of the school board to tell us whats best for our children and whats the best way to handle a class!! parents need to go to these PTA meetings pop up at there childrens schools and help these teachers out thats what where’re missing if you show love not only to the kids but the teachers to the children will do better and I beleave that so what are we going to do????

Well it says she was moved to another classroom, I wonder if it was for special needs kids or learning disabled children. The child admitted that she was told to stop but didnt, so what was the teacher supposed to do? In my time there was such a thing called corporal punishment. Then there was time out. And now the teachers have no means of discipline. And we all probably know how distracting those darn beads are when they keep rattling every time a child moves their head let alone sit there and play with them. at least this teacher was immaginative enough to think of a remedy for that. If the child could not be told what to do then she should have been in a class with other children like her.

Big Thurmon is partialy right. But the problem is that there is no way to discipline these children until it is too late. And by the time they finally get some “act right” discipline it usually comes in the form of the police or the business end of a gun. I live in an area notorious for murder of young people and committed by young people. Every day you see on the news some youngster murdered by one of his peers, and someone on the t.v. crying about the violence in our society. Well i wonder where it starts. these kids have no sense of consequences. So dont be so hard on these teachers who are trying to teach the kids no one else cares enough to discipline.

And unlike alot of you I still believe in spare the rod spoil the child, so shed probably have some explaining to do when she got home. And Im not really agreeing with the teacher, but what im saying is that its time for people to start stepping up and disciplining thier kids. If the child was taught to obey thier teachers from the start it wouldnt have happened in the first place. Across the river from me there is an ordinance in wich you can be fined for sagging pants. In my city children must wear uniforms because of gangs and bullying and teasing of less fortunate children whos parents cant afford Jordans and expensive clothes. I don’t care, wouldn’t ANY teacher be cutting my childs hair. I work too hard keeping it up growing, and looking nice. If the beads were getting on your nerves, the teacher had the right to send her to the nurse and ask the nurse to remove the beads from her head to remove the distraction, and stop the noise, but there were MANY ways this could have been dealt with better than what this teacher chose. They could have even removed the child, and contacted the parents and told them the child was not allowed to return to school with the distracting hairstyle. Many different options. Personally, it wouldn’t happen because my children know how to act in class, and would only be told ONCE not to do something, after which point i’m up at their school letting them know whats going on. But, any kind of violation of my childs personal space, such as this teacher did, wouldn’t be acceptable.

First of all…There is no teacher in this world that has a right to touch their student or cut their hair. Also, regardless of whether or not a child is not listening or is listening DOES NOT GIVE THAT TEACHER A RIGHT TO PUT HIS OR HER HANDS ON THAT CHILD NONE ALONE CUT THE CHILD’S HAIR!!! I dare any teacher to touch my child or anyones child, for that matter, Him or her would not be able to remove my voice from their ears or my face from their mind, I will sit in each of my child’s classes until I see fit to stop! I as a parent wish a teacher would even dare to mess with a child’s hair just because the first grader wouldn’t stop playing with their hair, I would personally have the teacher fired and sent to jail. Besides the ignorance this teacher exhibits signs of impatience not a quality for a teacher to have in the first place. When a child is nervous they do things to comfort themselves maybe this youngster had been harassed by this teacher more than once before so this child or the parents should not be jumped on without knowing the whole story. A child doing things of this nature does not necessarily mean there may be a discipline problem at home or that it should be blamed on the parents. Keep in mind there are only certain people in this world who belong becoming a teacher, not everyone is cut out for it the others only do it because they need the money not popularity, but that is no excuse.

The teacher’s action against this CHILD was mean-spirited, childish and lacking in self-control. If she doesn’t know better and can’t behave better she’s a poor example for the children. Imagine how these kids may process this and act out against kids who do things THEY don’t like. Think about it.

Kids get frustrated too. Do they go take their little scissor and cut off their teacher’s hair? And if the role were reversed, the child would have been kicked out of school, (ZERO tolerence) and possibly brought up on charges. So kids can’t get upset in school and lash out, but a grown teacher who should have self control got “frustrated”. The mother should have taken the same scissor and cut the teacher’s hair off. Now would the parent be brought up on charges? If so bring the teacher up on the same charges. If all the kid was doing was twirling her braid. Ignore her. At least she wasn’t bothering kids, talking in class, etc. And what happened to trying to send home a note? This teacher should not be a teacher. Go into another profession or higher grade. The school system is so wrong. There should be consequences for teachers taking their frustration out on kids. The teacher needs anger management and stress reducing classes. Adults cannot contain themselves but expect little kids to. This is sick!

Check out this scenario: Kid goes to school with hair cut lopsided. Teacher asks kid what happened to you? Kid starts crying my mommy got mad and cut my hair. teacher would be concrned and call protective services thinking child is being abused.

THIS is emotional abuse……not the act but how and why it happened. If kids get teased about being fat or ugly, they grow up with a complex, this girl is going to grow up hating people and teachers and wonder why nobody did anything.

First of all, I think that was completely unnecessary for a teacher to cut a child’s hair because she was playing with it in class..it’s her hair. I mean if it was getting on her nerves that much then she should have just put the child in time out, not cut her hair. It seems to me that the little girl is the adult in this story, not the teacher. That’s some mess that kids do, not adults. I personally feel that the child should be allowed to cut a piece of the teacher’s hair off so that she knows how it feels. I think that was really stupied on the teacher behalf. First of all you have to have patients that are required for a job when dealing with young children. If you can’t handle a child playing with her hair or anything a child might be doing in class, then you shouldn’t be working with kids. Not in the least did I intend to insult, disrespect and/or offend you with my statement of suggestion. I was merely offering somewhat of a “beginning” or “starting point” towards an explanation for the thoughts and views of various people of color. And while I make no excuses along the lines of race and/or racial prejudice for my own shortcomings, I have, however encountered overt racism and discrimination on many levels and in interesting form. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read this story. That teacher had no rights to put her hands on that little girl regardless of whether or not she was playing with her hair. Again she is in the first grade that is what children that age do. I would rather her play with her hair then to be noisy and disruptive. I wonder what this teacher would have done if she was disruptive in the class in other words talking. If she is not disturbing the class then what is the problem. That teacher she be suspended who is to say what else he or she has done in the past. There was definitely another appropriate way to handle this situation instead this teacher resorted to behaving like a child like a first grade student. She is teaching the other children that when you do not like what someone is doing then use force and violence. She should have informed the mother about the little girl and her behavior if it was that bad I seriously doubt any rational parent would look at this teacher as being sane. I agree with you diva. But more so then that because they went to such pains to not give any information about the teacher it makes it seam that race could have been an issue. Yes the beads make noise however what is the message if you where beads and it bother the teacher you child’s hair will be cut. We have all races that go to school and they have the own religions that take with them and wear their hair in ways that I find strange and wired but if we can protect people right to represent their religious rights in schools, workplaces and public areas why is this not being seen as a volition of rights. I also would like to mention that the way the mother handle her self was great however I would not just let this drop if I wear her. I know easy said then down however just an FYI I had the same thing happen to my child in Kindergarten however unlike this teacher who took responsibility for her action and said she did it. I am sure the only reason she did so is because she did this in front of the class and as we all know children will tell what they see. This is a toss up to me.Granted the child is seven , being only seven to listen and some times not listen.But on the other the braids were preventing the teacher from doing her job teaching the class robbing her classmates of learning time.If she’s taken out of class then you temporarily solve the problem for that day , but it begins again tomorrow as well as dealing with an more than likely angry parent.

Yes queen, my point is that there is no way to discipline them anymore, or at least some people think. I will whoop my child and go to jail for it rather than let them act a fool and get killed or end up in prison or any other downfall our children face today. i didn’t finish my first post but as i was saying…I’ve seen situations where teachers did not handle a situation with a child in the best manner.We can’t just write things off as discipline when you don’t know the people being paid to work with children. Just because they have the degree and the title of teacher does not mean they are qualified to work with children.We have to realize that some people find themselves stuck at a job because the have to have an income not because they enjoy what they do. I bear witness to teachers cursing at small children/ screaming at a child not just because the child is wrong but because the teacher doesn’t want to be bothered.We see it in the news that teachers are sleeping with students. So before we say children need discipline lets look at these cases and get back to protecting our children and speaking out.
To the mother of this child please get justice for your child! I don’t even want that person to be able to work with children. This story disgusted me and i’m really not sure if I would have been able to stop myself from going to that woman & cutting her hair. Ironically, if the parent did that to the teacher that parent would be charged so seek justice for that child and every other child that that woman would not be able to deal with rationally.

Im a parent of a very well behaved 8 year old. Every report card says “a pleasure to have in class”. I braid her hair & I add beads. If she came home missing any hair there would be a big problem. What happened to a punishment, a trip to the principal’s office, a call,or a note? That family was blind-sided by just a hot-tempered reaction.

AS I said in my earlier posts if u can’t handle noise from children then teaching is not a career to stay in especially if you can’t think before reacting. This time hair was cut what would the next over-reaction be? I’ve raised children & i have worked with children every child is different you have active children, children that misbehave and emotional children. As a teacher you must have patience and know how to deal with several different little personalities. This “teacher” just taught a class full of children to react without thinking, instead of finding another way of handling a problem she taught them to take matters into your own hands.
It’s not just a simple mistake when it comes to dealing with children. Just because this child didn’t get bruised or have any blood lost does not mean she was not injured. That teacher left an emotional wound.Girls feel strongly about their hair. To have it cut in front of her classmates..? Read the other mother’s reactions on here. Also it takes a while for some hair to grow due to the curl pattern, the hair was cut in the front so she gets a constant reminder as she gets to look at the uneven hair in front of her face.
If this teacher continues working with children this situation will be forgotten until it happens again or she does something worse. This was more than just a mistake.If she had slapped the child in the face is it still a mistake? Well she gave that child an emotional slap and thats not the person that I would allow to teach my child.
It might not seem serious to some but over-looked small matters can escalate into big matters. We need to use extreme caution when it comes to our youth because these years shape them for the future.

THE FACT IS NOT THAT IT IS HAIR AND WILL GROW BACK BUT THAT SHE VIOLATED PERSONAL SPACE THAT NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN CROSSED AND IN RETROSPECT TECHNICALLY ASSAULTED THIS CHILD BY CUTTING HER HAIR UNWILLINGLY AND WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF THE PARENTS. THIS IS A SCARY SITUATION FOR A CHILD AND SHE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SUBJECT TO IT!!

First of all, she stepped over the line! And I’m sadden because, this little girl has to remember this for the rest of her life. You never know what this may do to this child. This kind of thing could regress her. This could give her a learning disability. Well, let me tell you, if that was my sister, my mom would have went up to that school….went into the class room and just KICKED HER ASS UNTIL THE POLICE GET THEIR! No joke! I remember when I was in the 6th grade..this white man just told me to get out of the lunch line for no reason. Well, I did. I also went home because I was hungry! When my mother said “what are you doing home” I told her…she and my dad went up to the school…not my dad…but my mother tried to jump on that fool. Don’t get me wrong here please…I’m not a violent person..but sometimes the devil only understands a good old fashion…ASS WHIPPING! 400 yrs ago, this is the way we had to learn, and I think some of us have forgotten! They always want us to remember the lessons of the past, well they should have reminded this teacher…tie the person to a post and gave her five lashes. After that she would NEVER do anything like that to another child EVER AGAIN! And be fair about it, give them a choice…whip or caning! They don’t want to fire teachers OK! This is a way to hold them responsible and accountable for their actions. The men teachers too..you touch girls the wrong way in school..WHIP’POW..(sound of the whip Yall) Teachers who slap kids!(Whip’POW) sendind e-mails..WHIP’POW..trying to trade sex for grades..WHIP’POW!!!!

I understand people get stressed and money is an issue but this is a CHILD. It doesn’t matter what color the girl is. IT’S A CHILD. She just has a habit of playing in her hair. So what! It’s her hair and as long as it’s not disrupting the class in any way, what difference does it make?! This is a form of abuse if you ask me. She should be very happy that that girl’s mother didn’t come down there and open a can on her or worse. What’s even more jacked up is that they didn’t do anything to the teacher. No suspension without pay or anything and from the looks of it, they’re going to drag their feet on the investigation until this is not so fresh on the minds of others. This is pathetic! I just realized that the child felt tricked into coming up to the desk. The teacher called everyone up, then called the girl closer with the promise of candy, took the scissors and then cut her hair. She didn’t do it. It was premeditated. That was very calculated and the child knows that after the fact because she said “She (the teacher) tricked me”. The school’s principle is just as guilty of this abuse as the teacher because he’s allowing it. I’m sure the teacher wasn’t a minority just based off the fact that the principle protected her so much, the fact that the news didn’t put her picture up, and finally because of the diabolical way she plotted to get close enough to cut that child’s hair. I’m done.

This teacher definately had “balls”. I have never seen a mother so calm. Cut off the fake hair and I might only b@*!%h slap her. But she actually cut some of the child’s own hair according to the mother. One thing I do not play with is my children! You do not destroy a child’s spirit by doing something like this especially in front of a class that is “allowed” to laugh at her. Being accepted by other children is hard enough for kids even as young as she is, but having an adult that is accepting this behavior adds salt to the wound. In NO way would I accept the punishment by the system of $175 fine! My child is worth more than her weight in gold. I’ll admit, our teachers have one of the most stressful jobs on the planet. But stress cannot be allowed to be the excuse for inappropriate behavior. Everybody knows that children will habitually play with their hair. This teacher should be fired, fined, and black listed from ever teaching again. Plus, if this were my child, I’d sue both the teacher and the school district into the ground. They want a standard for how our kids act in school (and I can fully understand why), so let’s have one for how the teachers act too.

Stress is no excuse for that. You can’t cut a child’s hair, especially a child that’s not your own. A 175 dollar fine? Are you serious? That teacher should be fired ASAP.

I work with this same grade and age group and I could never imagine anyone doing anything like this at the school where i am employed. This is ludacris! This teacher needs to be fired, barred from ever teaching again and also sued by the parent(s) of this child!!! If this teacher cut this child’s hair because she repeatedly played with it, this teacher has some serious issues she needs to address herself, patience nd common sense being two of them. I must say that being a teacher can be a very stressful job, but this is where classroom management come into place. The teacher had some alternatives, she could of had the principal to remove the child and then contact her parent of the situation, and had he mother to talk with the child, or the teacher could have remove herself from the clasroom and had the administer to come and set with the class while she regroup, or had the child stand out side of the classroom in front of the door or stand in front of the class, until she felt like stop playing with her beads.

I have worked at an alternated school where the kids had been picked out of regular school, caused of the bad behavior, and believed me they can get that last nerve, and some more, but I had to make decision, if that child would stay in my classroom, of one of us being remove from there, so when needed be they were remove, but if I thought all I neded was to get away for a moments, then I would request that administer person come down and give me 5 to 15 mintues, instead of removing that child, caused it could have been getting on his/her nerves, to caused him to act out.

I feel with that being said that $175.00 fine is not enough punishment for her negative reaction, caused she could have been a dead teacher, messing with others folks children. I have some daughters, and me back in the days, it just wouldn’t have when down that easily, it would have been another breaking news, and you know how the head line would have went.

I looked at this when peoples got lay-off from there jobs, or when kids have been bully in school and take action into their on hands, and killed up others, should they not be punish for their actions, well her action wasn’t any different, just on a lower scale, no one got killed, or physical scared, but what about the mental scaring, who really know at this point in her young life.

This is not a race issues, it’s a human action went wrong.

First off this woman had so man options. She could have had this child removed from her class. She could have put some tape on the beads and kept them from clinging. She could have taken the beads out. But to cut this childs hair. Plain and simple this woman needs to have her A$$ whooped and her hair cut. She dealt with the right mother, cause I would be locked up.

She could have sent a note home to the girls mother asking her to tie the childs hair back in a ponytail. This may or may not have stoped her from playing with her hair but whether or not it gets cut off is the mother’s choice.

I am trying to understand why some individuals are putting the blame on a seven year old child for the teacher’s reaction to the seven year old playing with her hair. The teacher had other alternatives to dealing with the situation with the child. Many children this age will do things but that does not mean they are unruly and need discipline to the extreme of receiving corporal punishment for example a whooping. I can not believe some individuals are making comments suggesting that this child receive this type of punishment for just playing with her hair.
As her mother I would have removed the beads if the teacher would have contacted me and informed me of the child’s behavior. I would not want my child to be distracted nor would I want any other child to be distracted from learning because of the beads. I have worn beads as a child and I have never received any type of problems from teacher’s behind wearing them because when you move your head of course they are going to make noise so maybe this teacher just has a problem altogether that is deeper than the beads in any case as a parent I would have removed the beads and replaced them with barettes or something. I just hope many of you realize that reacting in a violent manner is not the appropriate way to handle the situation even though that may go through my head I still would not react with violence. The first thing is to find a way to get the teacher removed or punished for her actions because she should be held accountable for her behavior. The situation could have been resolved with a simple phone call home to the parents of the child.

1)Lets leave Ethnicity out of it please. WHY MUST YOU GUYS SEE EVERYTHING Black vs. White or White vs. Black?

2)Good chances are the teacher was BA as is the student. BA studnets,esp.in lower income-lower /middle-class areas,tend to be more respectful of White teachers because they are scared of them,see them as different,and the students have generally more respect for White teachers than Black teachers.
3) All teachers should at the beginning of the year write and post in code only for themsevles to understand what to do and do to,say to, students.
Along with your classroom management routine , do this too.Yeah,classroommanagement,namely discipline and treats, awards, group awards, is important. Today’s studnets repsone to that. You have to give treats.Yeah,I learned the hard way, GIVE treats. Forget why the school system says about only so much sugar. Give them cookies, minature choc candies, along with the crackers, pretzels and Cheerios cereal.
One teacher I worked with gave out whole pickles.Heeeeyyyy, her students were orderly!!!!
4)The Slime Rule-one teacher told me this rule. Think and look at the students are dipped in slime.Snot. Pus. Meaning behind this is-
DON’T TOUCH THEM!!!Don’t touch them. Electric shock-they are open wires and if you touch them you will shocked and die.
5) Some of these kids will test your last nerve. WHY? Lack of supervison,discipline,routines,stability, love,attetnion at home.
That is NOT your problem. You must do by giving any treat nec to keep yourself calm, teach,and get through each day. Let the streets and the law,and home handle the students. Your jobb is make the lesson fun,entertaining, give treats and keep order in order to teach them,reach those disrtict bassed benchmarks, state test scores,and just maybe reach them in other areas.
6) Well why be teacher if …do not like kids? I KNOW some of you will ask that.
You do not have to love them to teach them.I have seen many teachers who do not seem to like those kids they have for that year and yet,teach, have great classroom management and who passed their evaluations.
You want to teach to bring students up to a higher thinking level. You want to see the rewards of someone not knowing something and then learning that and other subjects,themes related to that original concept.
The reward is getting a student in one level academically and challenging yourself to take them to the next grade level.
Maybe that is liking children.
7) Not every school and studnet population isfor everyone. I learned the hard after teaching mostly White middle-class kids in a Catholic school,a better behaved mixed population from a public school,and a tough public school,that all kids are NOT the same.
That is okay.Find a school population you can work with.

Technically it’s aggravated assault. Make it personal – what if it was your child? Being a teacher, I know that if the little girls behavior is at the point where redirection doesn’t work then there is a lack of communication on the teachers part. I am an advocate for corporal punishment. Immediate consequences for improper actions. Cutting a braid off is inexcusable (Racial or not.)Aggravated assault is a felony.

In some states, cutting off a child’s hair as punishment can be viewed as abuse. Regardless of her being frustrated, she should have called her parents or sent her to the principle’s office so they could have maybe sent her home. Send the child out of class to the principal’s office— anything more than that…when you put your hands on someone else’s child…is assault and should be treated as such. Children can be annoying but as adults we must set examples and maintain control over emotions. When kids see this behavior from adults it reenforces further negative views and more anti-social behavior. Sounds as if the teacher needs some type of sensitivity training— either that or another line of work because as long as she’s working with 7 years olds she’ll continue to encounter problems with children lacking self-control. Or perhaps she’s been around them too long because she obviously reverted back to 7 herself with the childish assault she pulled.

Teaching is great profession. All schools and students are not for everybody. Pick a school district and population that suits you. All kids are not the same. That is all okay.

I never hit child,cut hair,damaged personal belongings of theirs,or anything like that.
Yeah,it strucka cord with me.Once I had a child have a braid cut by another studnetand I had no idea untill the parent called and was very angry.

The girl told the boy to do that and he did. Both were sweet kids. I offered to pay for the braid.
I was glad the parent called me first instead of the office.
It all ended fine, but that year was tough for me and a learning experience.

I too , like carolinagirlsdabest, would like to know what school district you are in and the name of the school so i could send a copy of what oyu have written so that parents, staff, and the BOE will know whom they have teaching their children. i think that all “educators” should send a week in a head start classroom. Before anybody say anything about head start not being a real school, think again. We have to teach social skills, cognitive skills, define gross motor and small motor skills, things that Kindergraten or 1st grade won’t teach because you should know that by then. Head Start teachers are the best teacher outside of the home. and for you 314 to say that it is just hair is will grow back. It is not just about hair that will or will not grow back it is about making the child feel at ease around you and future teachers. This one incident can lead to years of anger toward teachers and adults in general and this child could either lash out at adults or clam up. It is not about one braid it is about the rest of this child’s life. 314 you shouldn’t say that children are horrible they have behavior issues but that can be corrected with guidance. I think that you should think about the career chose you have made and find a different one.

When you feel something is wrong you have to take action & let your voice be heard.I don’t care what nationality the teacher is all that matters is I would never allow that kind of individual to be around my child. I found time to post and I will find time to call, write, & fax. I don’t know what the child’s family is doing with this situation but it must be treated with the what if this was your child mentality. 7 year olds don’t braid their own braids/add beads to their hair either so those of you that claim the child annoyed the teacher, as if the teachers actions are called for, the major skipped step was contacting the child’s parent.

If someone had taken a scissor and cut my child’s hair off, there would’ve been one helluva fight outside of school at 3:00pm. Would it have been right, no, but I would’ve slapped the stress right outta that b***h.

I feel that a lot of you all are beating up the situation…FIRE THE TEACHER….nope!! As a teacher, you all don’t know the HALF of what we go through. Now it sounds to me as the little girl maybe BD (behavior disorder…”her first year, she had problems, this year is better”) Because of NO Child Left Behind, many BD, LD, and…just special ed kids are being put into regular ed which COULD pose a HUGE problem on the teacher. My next concern is…is kind of relationship do the parent have with the teacher? My guess…NONE until now!! Why do that matter…it helps in classroom management. You all act like teacher get paid when in fact we are the LOWEST PAID PROFESSION and we put up with so much BS from both PARENTS (especially those who don’t care til something goes “wrong”..flunking or fighting) the STUDENTS (who parents don’t care because “I stay with my grand ma now!) or SCHOOL BOARD (who don’t care about our opinion). Therefore, we have to be in the profession because of our love for children and wanting to teach! (thats mine anyway). Was this teacher wrong…YES!! But to get fired..NO!! That would set on more issues than necessary. Who really wants to go into a class in the middle of the year and have to start over….NOT ME!!

I must admit that teachers…we do lose our cool. (Ive had 38 students in my class with no aide or assistance, just a prayer that a parent would come help!) Like I stated before, its not an easy profession like some think it is. We sometimes have MORE HATS WEAR. We play parent (yes, I hug and sometimes feed my students) counselor (“my brother feel on me sometimes”) mentor, etc. Therefore, I believe that some educator such as the one from this school need to re-evaluate her meaning for teaching.

Regardless of BD, LD or whatever u may call it, it doesn’t give her the right to cut lil mama’s hair. If it was my child I wouldn’t have time to talk to the media because I would be in jail. Because of the incident lil’ mama may have BD, LD, etc… I would suspend the teacher and require her to take some anger management. Then I would monitor her with the children, if that doesn’t work then I would fire her. It’s a tough situation and it depends on the teacher’s past experiences with her students..

I feel sorry for this little girl but we dont really know what happened. The teacher should be fine more but whopping ass that why many parents cant even go to the school because of parents taking the violent approach. I feel for the teacher as well because who knows how this child really behaved not saying her hair being cut is warrented but her behaviour might have triggered something in the teacher. I give it to educators they have to deal with some bad ass children nowadays with no recourse of joint effort from the parents. My advice to parents is be pro active about things as oppose to violence cause it wont get you very far. This from a parent who cant even do a walk thru on my son @ school because of ignorant parents thinking violence is the answer!

APPARENTLY THIS “TEACHER” NEVER LEARNED HER LESSON FROM HER BULLYING DAYS AS A CHILD CUTTING OFF HER CLASSMATES HAIR. WHAT WOULD SHE HAVE DONE IF SHE WAS BITING HER LONG FINGERNAILS, CUT OFF HER FINGERS. THIS CLEARLY WAS A VIOLATION OF THE CHILD RIGHTS OF PROTECTION AS A STUDENT IN THIS SCHOOL. IF THIS PROBLEM WAS SO ANNOYING, THEN EITHER CALL THE PARENT AND DISCUSS IT, OR TALK TO THE ADMINISTRATOR OR EVEN REMOVING HERSELF FROM TEACHING THIS CLASS. It is abuse. I guess you can call it emotional abuse because the little girl clearly loves her hair and she said the kids was laughing at her so thats something that she will have to deal with!! THe teacher was way out of line! She thought it was weave, lol what a dam joke!! She should be fired!

This teacher crossed the line when she decided to take a pair of scissors and cut the little girl’s hair weave or not her behavior was inappropriate. She should definitely be reprimanded by her actions if not fired. There were other alternatives that she should have taken such as contact the little girl’s mother and ask her to remove the beads if the beads were becoming a distraction to her and the other children in the class, but I have never seeen or heard of this happening. I see little girl’s wearing beads all the time so why was it such an issue for this teacher. Next, it will be something else that another student is either wearing or doing that is driving her crazy. She has indirectly taught the other children how to handle a situation when they feel irritated or annoyed and therefore she should be relieved of her duties. This mother should do everything in her power to have the teacher removed and the school should do so without a fight because at the end of the day this teacher has become a liability. No one wants to employ someone who could be a potential cause of a lawsuit. I commend the mother for taking a non violent approach and she is justified in her anger her daughter experienced something traumatic.

I’ve have been in this situation, however it was my child who cut her hair. Her teacher who happened to be white called me on my cell ASAP so that I could know that it happened and probably to make sure I didn’t come down on her. She knew that however I sent my children to school is the same way they better come back and if they didn’t I was going check the teacher for it. We need to know how involved was this mother in her child’s school life, because I promise you if they knew that she’d get up in their faces over her child this sh!t wouldn’t have happened at all. And her calmness about it all makes me suspicous as hell. They would have arrested me at that school but that teacher would have needed a ambulance.

After I had calmed down from wanting to knock the teacher’s head off her shoulders I would have informed the school my lawyer will be in contact with them. While any and all communication will be through my lawyer!

Okay, I understand how teaching is a very stressful job. I understand after watching the video how the little girl’s actions can be very annoying, not to mention a distraction to the entire class who will be watching her flip her hair instead of paying attention to the lesson. I work in the school system and I understand the frustration that comes from knowing when children are doing these types of things, including balling up paper or drawing pictures that it’s stressful because they’ll later say they don’t understand when all they had to do was pay attention and you will be labeled a bad teacher. However, the teacher’s actions were very wrong. You don’t do that. I don’t even confiscate items. I let them keep and doc**ent their actions and keep it moving. I also usually try to get other teachers to witness the off task behavior so that when the parents try to get mad over a bad grade, I will have doc**entation to prove that the child needs to stay on task. If a child has a short attention span then it is up to the teacher to notify the parent so they can remove the distractors themselves. I had several issues like that and I always called the parents, and the students would come to school toyless, markerless, or whatever it was keeping them from learning. Or if that wasn’t the case, then I definitely couldn’t be blamed. People need to think of creative strategies instead of acting drastically out of frustration. Teachers should learn to pick their battles well. She is not endangering herself or no one else, let her play with her hair and miss out on important information. Case closed.
