I find it to be sad that something that has been a black tradition for decades could be emulated by white’s who then not only challenge blacks by but beat them at their own game not because they are better but because they are a novelty! It’s as sad as HBCU’s having a white Queen and/or King or class Valedictorian.

People need to accept the fact that we live in a world that is multi-racial. Holding on to and creating boundaries that keep this a black thing or that a white thing is stupid. Christianity wasn’t the religion our African ancestors practiced, we were forced fed and accepted that religion by the very people that enslaved, beat, and killed us. Like typeflow said basketball wasn’t created or first played by blacks but we play it and excell at it. Just like baseball, football, and all other major sports. We praise and cheer for our people when they break down color barriers in sports like tennis and golf. And now even how a black man that is successful in ice skating. Give praise where its due. If they were the better team they were better, black or white.

The point of the article is that people appreciate the culture of other ethnic groups and invariably apply their own ethnic twist to it. It’s called art, and its evolution.

Stepping takes a lot of discipline and perseverance, and I’m glad to see so many young people sharpening their skills. I wish high schools across America had Stepping as an after school activity with competitions and so on. It’s just too bad that this stuff only takes place at the college level. One of the good things about having other races join the fray is each group of people bring their own uniqueness to the genre, and push the routines to new heights.

Please, please tell me where “ALL” of this “CHANGE” comes from. I investigate charges of employment and housing discrimination and have done so in offices in the south, east and midwest. Not that there hasn’t been change, but what I can’t get is where you get the KIND of charge you’re taking about. Okay, so this does bother me. “They” (and you can put any other ethnicity besides african american in those quotes)take over and adapt everything we come up with. You just name it, from dance to clothes to whatever. Although, it does speak to our creativity and uniqueness as a people, what bothers me is that in this society they still don’t want to give us the credit. The fact that every culture in the world, watches African American activities for what the next big thing is and yet even with a black president there are still attempts to stifle us, just plain bothers me. Black people quit hating! I am from the South and I went to a HBCU and I am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta. Those girls brought and they did something different. Them lifting that girl and she stepping in the air. To win it is not just about the stepping is about you looking like ONE. Hand movements, head movements everything should like and sound like one person. Now go back and look at the white girls execution and look at the others. Some girls were off some heads were turned differently. YOu must look like one person.

Now some of you guys what to say, we can’t have nothing. Look either we want everyone to know who are are or we don’t. You can’t have it both ways! Those girls brought it and they brought it hard. We wanted stepping to be mainstream and now that it is and other races are doing it, then we want to cry… they are taking what’s ours. NAW… those judges were black. Because they won now you want to call the judges house niggas. Those girls worked their a$$es off and I am quite sure something black was their step master! Quit complaining. The competition was for OMG!

Let’s be real…those girls did their thing and some people are mad because they got outstepped. SO that means we as black people need to step our game up! and stop whining! Black people ice skate, play hockey, tennis, golf. We are in NASCAR races! We have completely taken over basketball and football. They are saying the same about us! Now if they get mad at us for participating in their events, we call them racist. So what kind of example are we setting with these negative comments? If we stay on top of our game and quit getting complacent, we will not have to worry about whining over things as small as this. They actually did their thing. Personally the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority did a lot better than Delta Sigma Theta. Their whole performance was more organized in my opinion.

Lets face it, we are living in a world and time of transition. If we can have an African American president then I can’t see why a white sorority could win a step show. Now that said, at the risk of dropping social commentary, I’m just going to be up front about it. When they tossed the girl in the air, caught her, and kept stepping, it was all over. First that move, by itself was a high risk cheering move I’ve seen numerous times on the ESPN cheering competitions. I hate to say it but, that changed the game right there. Going further, not too many African Americans will spend the money on the cheering camps which train girls for that kind acrobatics and gymnastics. What has me concerned really is not who won or who lost but the safety factor. If the girl had fallen and broke her neck, then it really could have brought a bad image to stepping altogether. I’m a proud member of K A PSI and I’ll only echo what I have seen. Brothers are brothers no matter the color so if a white sorority can come into something that traditionally has been associated with Black Culture, and take the prize, my hat goes off to them. It basically is a signal of things to come. We should embrace the moment and at the same time ride the wave if you will. This has the potential to actually bring Black Frats and Sororities into mainstream culture where the are mainstream dollars which in turn could give the HBCUs the long overdue airtime on ESPN or some sports venue. Stepping, like it or not is a serious physical activity which in turn could be a sport, which of course in turn in our culture could be capitalized upon. I wonder if again socially speaking will Zeta Tau Alpha establish a chapter on a few black campuses?

I met a black man who became the district manager for a chain of stores that would not have even served him at the lunch counter when he was a youngster. A black man is president. The world changes.

Personally I can see why the white sorority won their performance was more organized and they actually did more stepping then the Deltas. The only thing I would say is that the white sorority lacked the intensity and attitude I am used to see when it comes to stepping. The Deltas really need to clean that up cause it just looked sloppy and all over the damn place,lol. With that said I don’t really see how anyone would be offended by them stepping, I mean to me its an honor. I am honored by the fact that young white women were interested and liked my culture enough to research and invest time into learning about stepping, and not coming out looking foolish but actually bringing it. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery to me, as long as they give credit to the black sororities that inspired them I have no problem with it. As for the other sororities you going to have to bring it a little harder next time!

However as a member of a BGLO, I am deeply disappointed that something that has been a hallmark, a tradition of BGLOs is being exposed to the mainstream and co-opted. I mentioned that this phenomenon would happen with the release of that movie “Stomp The Yard.” One I thought the movie totally missed the point with why stepping was important and the history behind it. It also failed to acturately convey the history of BGLOs. I would also fault the other teams for not being on-point! You must not get on stage and think that because you are the best in your state that that will cut nationally. Bring your “A” GAME everytime or go home.

Movies, dissertations, speeches on the idiosyncrasies our cultural diaspora do not need to translate what it is we do for any f**king body! He beat out all those Europeans, Asians, Canadians, etc. in a sport that Blacks don’t really participate in. He stepped up and won.

I have been in or attending stepshows since the 90′s and one thing is true, most organizations are doing the same routines year in and year out. The shows are stagnant and lacks originality. Everyone is using the same songs, same chants,and same skits. All a white group has to do is bring something new to the table i.e. being white with rhythm. The routine they had was tight. If they copied it from another group you could not tell. All we need to do is step our game up, thats all!

Black people are the new white people. We have become as racist and narrowminded as jim crow era white america. How can we talk about the things that happened in our history as being evil if we turn around and do the same thing? The white group won it,look at there dance routine,to the other group that suppose to be a tie with there were was average and nothing special about it to give them 100 thousand for.

We as Black people have longed for the day when things would be fair; when America would be in the frame of mind and heart to select the ‘best’ for the job, the ‘best’ as the winner. We’ve always clamored for equality. But, it seems as though some of us only consider things ‘fair’ when they are in our favor. Fairness and equality don’t work that way.

Zeta Tau Alpha were fabulous. For almost nine minutes they were fabulous. And Alpha Kappa Alpha, they were–for all of four minutes and thirty seconds or so–good. Choosing a winner was easy for anyone wanting ‘fair’ for all people.

Evidently only the Alphas and the Zetas were the only ones good enough to be part of this dispute. To choose the winner of the contest, all I have to go by are these videos posted on this website. That being the case, it’s possible that I could have missed something. Maybe things didn’t happen in reality as they’re portrayed here:

1. Maybe the entire squad of the Zetas took long breathers that stretched their routine from a mere four and one half minutes to an amazing time (in comparison) of nearly nine minutes;
2. Maybe the Zetas routine really didn’t go almost nine minutes;
3. Maybe the entire squad of the Alphas didin’t take several breathers during what seemed in comparison, a much shorter routine;
4. Maybe bits of the Alphas’ routine were edited–the really good parts cut out, and the real time of their routine made to look very short in comparison to the Zetas’.
5. Maybe there was some sort of tromp l’oeil (trickery) used to make the Zetas appear to be better ‘steppers’ than the Alphas.

In, short, maybe the judges on site saw something that happened that these videos don’t show us. If so, they should Choose A Winner! Their job was not try to make anyone feel better because ‘these white girls beat those Black girls.’

Fair is very important to me, as it is to most; and if these videos show things as they really happened, then along with me, and the FIRST decision of the judges, Stevie Wonder would say the Zetas won.

Mr. Wonder, we need a fair decision. Would you take a look at this; then, maybe, some of us will stop hatin’ and be glad that, in some small ways, Things Are (Almost) ‘Fair’.

I think sprite is trying to save themselves from scrutiny from people like sharpton and jackson. those girls performed from the time they stepped on stage til the time they left. there dance segement was on point. then on top of that they thought outside of the box and held one girl up in the air on a platform and she was stepping. the won fair and square. sprite lost some cool points with me on this one. zeta won and they should have left it at that. who cares that some people think that we(being sprite) shouldnt have picked them as the winners. sprite should have put out a statement saying “THEY WON GET OVER IT PEOPLE”

i dont know if everyone else is watchin the same videos that i’m watching but those white girls brought it and they deserved to win…if the other routines were as creative then they wouldve won…get over it, this competition is about talent not race, and compared to the other teams the white girl’s routine was way better i terms of dificulty, technique and creativity. i actually DONT think sprite should have re-configured the scores to make a black team “tie”(mad suspect)…they were nowhere near as good as the white team…sprite probably made them “tie” for first place to avoid upsetting all the closedminded black people who think just because stepping is a traditionally black thing that a black team shoulf have won. the judges and sprite were not coddling a white team by making them win…they won fair and square…in actuality they were coddling black people to mitigate our angst and dissatisfaction that “our people” didnt win…

Man my last step show, we were California Step Champs. I’m a bonafide ex-stepper and on the real, ZTA did the business. They executed perfectly. Hey, as a whole African-American nation, we have first Black Presidents, Super Bowl Winners, so many other first accomplishments to this Roman Society. This may be the last time an All-White Sorority Team wins, but why hinder their performance based on race. They did an outstanding job. Now I will put this in here. Zeta Tau Alpha was the business. There is NO doubt in my mind there is a Brotha who has practiced over — and — over — and — over, again. LMAO. It is great to see on the surface they seem to respect the culture and tradition of African American fraternities and sororities. But,100 years from now — as usual — they would be claiming origination.

You know I wasn’t going to comment on this at first about the stepshow that sprite hosted. I honestly wanted to hold my peace. Now I saw these white chicks step and they weren’t all that great this was a gimmick I’ll give credit where its due, but in all honesty the Delta’s and AKA’s did a far better job than ZTA oh big deal they lifted the chick up and she stepped on the platform held up by her sorors it was sloppy and it wasn’t the hard stepping either. Now I’ve looked at the film and from what my slightly over 20/20 vision saw it would have been better to name AKA or DST the winner their lines were clean it wasn’t sloppy unlike ZTA and from jump they came hard besides AKA taught them how to step in the first place. Stepping has always been part of our tradition since slavery I know most of you know stepping origins come from the African gumboot dance and military drill. Some of you saying stepping is going mainstream and we shouldn’t be upset about that bullsh**! White people have stole from us since day one why should we allow them to steal our heritage too. We shouldn’t I could see if ZTA had brought the rawkus but they didn’t anybody with eyes could see the performance put on by ZTA was semi-mediocre and that’s a compliment considering how well the everyone else performed. I’m not saying they didn’t have a right to compete, but if you suck you suck this was a big publicity stunt that flopped, but I’m glad that AKA is getting their scholarship money if anything black students need the scholarship money because we already know the white kids have a melanin advantage over us as is. Now this step competition was hosted in the ATL there’s no d*mn way that they should have won. Ok I’m done those who want to b*tch and gripe what I just said feel free to do so. But I’m sure there are a few people who agree with what I said. Oh yeah and to add insult to injury this happened during Black History Month, but to me Black History is 365 24/7!

i disagree after watching the clip of Zeta. They repeated the exact same thing throughout their skit. Delta brought it! The skit was entertaining and those girls danced their A off. Alpha should have taken it or second place.

I don’t know what video you all watched, but ZTA did not win that step show! I’m not Greek, but I’ve seen enough step shows to know that was not a winning show–point blank. It was simple and timing was off. Yes, they did better than everyone thought, but you don’t just give them a win for that! I do think Sprite should have sucked it up and leave them as the winner once it was announced, though. Changing it was wrong. But if they had judged right the first time, this mess would not be going on!!!

I guess only MISSTRINGS43 and VASCO5 saw the same video I did….lol ZTAs steps were not difficult, but yes, the did a great job. Your comment at 11:09 am is right on point. I’m sure someone thought it would be “cute” to teach a few steps. Unfortunately, it blew up in their faces!

My point is that some people are saying that it shouldn’t be about race. Sprite made it about race. This event was targeted toward a specific demographic. If it weren’t geared toward African Americans (almost) exclusively, 1) it wouldn’t have been held in Atlanta, 2) during Black History Month, 3) with ALL of the groups represented in its advertisements African Americans. I’m not mad at Zeta Tau Alpha as much as I am at the persons they learned the steps from OR Sprite for exploiting something so important to the history of the Divine 9 orgs. Yet and still, I’d love to sit down with a member of ZTA to see if they understand the true RELEVANCE and HISTORY of stepping — what it REALLY means. If they just woke up one morning and said, “Let’s enter a step show!” — which is what I suspect they did, I’m truly disappointed.

This really makes me wonder…..will the art of stepping change now? You have to admit that what ZTA did was a little different than what the other groups did. I guess bridging the gap and mainstreaming stepping just may do that. Just a thought!

The AKAs deserve the title. ZTA performed better than expected, however that is not grounds for awarding them the win. Their steps were basic and staggered. It appears as if they were acting-even their movements looked weird. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority won hands-down. The AKAs were graceful, timely, and comfortable in their movements. Give credit where credit is due. Some people love to reward white folks for mimicing black folks (especially when they do a half-way decent job at it), but the reality is that the Matrix came out 12 or 13 years ago-the costumes were whack, the shades were whacker, and chunky white girls pretending to “get crunk” and stomping on the ground does not ammount to a winning step team-no matter how much you all want to help them fit in and feel comfortable. Zeta Tau Alpha had so much SOUL in their show. You could clearly see they put in an enormous amount of work into preparing for this show.SORRY; ZETA TAU ALPHA just caught the other sororities SLIPPING. The crowd went crazy for these girls,not from the surprise of white girls stepping,but because they BROUGHT IT,from the beginning of thier show until the end(SEE FOR YOURSELF!)When the AKAs stepped; all you heard was a few SKEE-WEEs. If you don’t like it; do what they do in sports; study the tape and BEAT THAT AZZ next year.

Why is everyone always so quick to pull the race card when they don’t get their way? It is plain to see that ZTA earned that money; their stepping was on point. We need to stop crying every time someone of another race does better than us (albeit in an event that is historically black) because it does nothing to help our progression. We are constantly talking about “racist whitey” this and that when we aren’t behaving any better or trying to lead by example. Sprite shouldn’t have changed the score at all to appease blacks; they knew what they scored and why they scored it that way. It’s time for us to grow up and get over it!

Color should not be a factor. After viewing the clips of the top groups…those (white) young ladies were extremely creative and they PUT IT DOWN! Alot of hip shaking, twisting, and suggestive movements with a few stomps thrown in is NOT steppin’. Yes, I think the black community should look at it as a slap in the face, but a slap to WAKE THEM UP to the fact that we need to stay on top of our games, but thought into EVERYTHING we do, and not depend on our color in certain situations; that would make us no better than the rest.

One more thing….to all those who say look at our history and how they treated us, how they made fun of us….notice your words. I lived with what One1Time talks about in his comment. I played ball and had a 42″ vertical. That wasn’t supposed to be, except it was. The brothers I played with were cool, but the people watching and sometimes the guys coming down to challenge for the first time couldn’t believe it. I wound up in the Army over in Europe playing some serious ball for some serious cash. All because I played the way I did and took advantage of what God blessed me with to play that sport. These ladies did the same thing only in stepping. They definitely brought it that night, so leave it be. Things didn’t have to be a tie, except I think some people among the organizers got cold feet and made a real fast move to equalize things. And since both groups received the $100K, who was gonna pitch a serious b***h? If it was close, but I lost, and someone came along with a fix, I wouldn’t want any part of it. My pride and sense of fair play wouldn’t let me. I would be saying, “They won, but I’ll be back next year and they won’t touch me.”

I don’t see how Sprite can take back the original winners and call it a tie just because people don’t like the results. The fact that stepping has deeply African roots shouldn’t bar someone in America from participating or winning a competition. Many African Americans have adopted activities that were originally seen as Caucasian such as skateboarding, golf, heavy metal bands, just a few I can think of off the top of my head. It would honestly be the most hypocritical thing in the world to say that white girls shouldn’t win a step competition.

Also I just wanted to point out to everyone that caps lock is not the cruise control for cool. NOBODY CARES THAT YOU CAN TYPE LIKE THIS. just sayin.

Gotta admit, ZTA’s execution was tighter than the AKA’s. Both were creative, but the AKA’s were a bit wobbly with some of the stunts and their cadence lost control at the end. ZTA’s were as tight as the frat’s tend to be.

Well I was there that night and those girls killed it. They deserved first place. After the winners were announced people actually booed. I was disapointed I mean don’t be a sore loser. Afterwords I heard a woman say that sprite gave those white people our money and how we originated stepping and they came and stole it like they do everything else.

ZTA earned first place. To me I thought that would just be a wake up call to step up your game. As a fellow Greek I was disappointed with many of the sloppy performances. I’m old school: Do it tight and do it right. ;-)

It shouldn’t be about stealing…..The fact of the matter is that they came and the brung it…..Their routine was on point….Thats our problem we feel like we dont have to cont. to work hard….to keep soemthing and that we should automatically get it because we orginated it… No people…..no….their will always be someone waiting to take your spot….Sprite should not feel guilty… The best team won..Instead of being a hubmle loser….we are know going to get the pitty win…

I hate sore losers. Unfortunately we can be some of the biggest haters on the planet sometimes. We hate to see anyone else do something as well or better than us. We try to diminish the accomplishments of other races who box, play basketball, rap, dance, sing whatever. These girls’ routine raised the stepping game to a whole new level.
