Roxanne Shante Apologizes For Lying About Ph.D

Slate Magazine had previously reported that Roxanne Shante’s story about having her label pay for her Ph.D, reported by the New York Daily News was false, after investigating it. Now Roxanne Shante has finally addressed the issue with a letter.

“I would like to thank my long time fans and supporters for your continued support. I am humbled and grateful to all of you for that. Without going into all of the details as of right now, I would like to apologize that this story regarding my post recording career has caused such a ruckus. The entire story will be revealed at a later time.

Throughout my career and life, I have been faced with many challenges, both professionally and personally. Like all of you, I am human, and may have not made the correct decision all the time. And, like anyone else, I would like to think that my entire life or career is not judged by one error or mistake.
It is very easy to criticize someone and I have left myself open to criticism. That is fair. There are plenty of people that will attest that I have done a lot for them. It seems though, that negativity gets more attention than positivity.

All I can say to that, is before you level any further criticism and cynicism, walk in my shoes. I am making this statement to apologize to the people that truly care about me for any angst that this situation has caused, and to thank them for their continued support. I am proud of what I have been able to do for so many others, and would like to let those persons know that I will continue to be there for them no matter what.

I am proud that during my twenty plus years as a pioneer in the Hip-Hop industry, to have opened doors for those who came after me, such as MC Lyte, Salt N Peppa, and Queen Latifah to name a few. I will have no further statement in regards to this matter at this time.”

    What!?!? A black female with a kid lying about being educated?…where does that happen at? And she was a rapper?….s**t if all the black single moms that lied about college educated that I were with were all rappers Id be the male superhead.

    Typical prepared statement for a busted celebrity: “I got caught in a lie, now I’m back-peddling. We’re all human…(blah blah blah). Walk a mile in my shoes…(yadda yadda…)” Knock it off, Shante!! She isn’t the only one though. Half of the women on BP lie about their education too. Wanting a masters and having one are two different things. The funniest part is when you read their pages. It’s the “post-grads” that have the poorly-written pages with atrocious grammar and spelling. College is not for everyone, so you don’t have to lie. If you’re a drop-out, be proud. Be a woman about it…

    The crazy thing is, I heard her being interviewed on WBAI a few years ago promoting a organization she had set up to mentor young girls trying to get and keep them on the correct path, which included providing them with scholarship money for college. Of course, she was not only serving as the chairperson of the org, but also as the top example. I will have to wait to hear her side fully, but I wonder, why is that people talk about continuously lying as if it was a mistake? like it was an error in judgement or something? Mistakes are usually things people make when they don’t think situations through then act on making the wrong choice..When you have been lying about something for at least 5 years, can this still be considered a mistake? not in my eyes, but I’m not judging, because she still has some hits I really dig, and in spite of this, she is still a very well spoken, articulate and intelligent sister!

    I’m still trying to understand how she didn’t think somebody wasn’t gonna call her on it? That really baffles me. I mean if you’re an everyday joe, nobody would really know one way or another. To be in the celebrity limelight…and go there….doesn’t make sense to do it. Now everything she says people will take as a potential lie.

    LOL, damn, I actually had forgotten all about this gal till she came out and said she had gotten a PhD and made the label pay for it. I was proud of her, she must not have done a damn thing with her life since she doesn’t want to say anymore. SMH

    Please forgive an old guy like me for asking this (since I don’t have a Ph.D in anything)but does she have a degree or not? I mean the first line states that she lied about having her label PAY for her degree,it doesn’t specify that she doesn’t HAVE a degree. Oh well Shante…”Have A Nice Day”!

    I just think it is ashame that she went so extreme she did interiews and all about how she won the label and they educated her! I mean we should all be happy what we accomplish in life! This is just sad! I wish you well Roxanne! SOunds like she is going to be writing a book.

    Well it’s not like we all don’t lie! I don’t pay this woman no attention anyway so it doesn’t matter to me.But I can say that whoever is judging her needs to stop because at least she once was a rapper and on t.v. how many of us can say that??????????????????????????? She needs to be thankful for her previous success.
