Props to Rikyah at Jack and Jill for this one

Maggie Anderson drives 14 miles to buy groceries, which might seem curious given that she lives in bustling Oak Park. She and her husband, John, patronize gas stations in Rockford and Phoenix, Ill. They travel 18 miles to a health food store in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood for vitamins, supplements and personal care products.

Watch a Video on The Ebony Experiment

The reason? They want to solve what they call “the crisis in the black commu- nity.” They want to, as they say, “buy black.”

This is wonderful but at the same time- I’m torn about it. It’s supportive but taking a step backward in a country that’s supposed to be moving forward. If there were more ‘specialty’ kinds of places and niche black services that our people would offer to the mainstream- such would be a more novel idea. We have such services/ businesses but they’re so sporadic as this story proves. These people drive much too far to live a life of comfort while supporting the effort! I applaud them because I simply couldn’t do it.

well he did seem a bit unprepared. I live in metro atlanta and i know there are a lot of black businesses out here…i think i may try this out for awhile. I have always felt similar to the couple and thought that its important to support black business and create black owned businesses and corporations. I am originally from knoxville, tn and there are hardly any in the area. I am a business major in school right now and it is a goal of mine to have my own business. Hopefully I will see fellow black people help show support to me as well. This couple is really doing a lot and hopefully this will affect others in trying to help their community by supporting businesses.

That is about as sick as this website is getting. If I was a business owner and somebody shopped at my store only because we are the same color I would not want they’re business. Maybe down south 60 years ago when there were black and white drinking fountains but we are in a whole nother century. If you were born and raised in this country you are an American just different colors if people cannot handle that they should move to Africa or somewhere that they can identify with the color of there skin. The fact that there is a site called Black planet just reinforces the fact some people haven’t gotten outside of they’re box.

im for and would like to support black businesses but when comes to customer service and goods,we are not very good at it. you always find a customer service person with an attitude or the of goods are not as great and its expensive. we need to learn those qualities then maybe things will change.

im torn also about it. in my city alot of the black owned companies treat the black customers that come in their stores like crap. you get service with attitude, ripped off or even no service. makes it hard to spend money with my own.

I thought this was a free democracy,so people should be able to spend there money however. The article seem lame.

some of yall leaving comments are brainwashed that the white mans ice is colder. buy black!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Heart_Mender67/ Heart_Mender67

Yeah “buy black” then what? Where does the money go in the end, right back to the white man.

I agree with the principle of this article, and would definitely patronize all black owned stores, if i had the ability to do so. Some of you are so negative, that you won’t even consider supporting black business. Chinese people usually hire their own kind, yet there is no problem you see there. Its about trying to build up the ownership in black community, yet you’d rather go elsewhere or complain that we shouldn’t patronize all black stores. And BlackPlanet is a marketing tool, not some vast conspiracy entered into by black people, man some of you are disappointing.

I love black people, and I support them all the way, but this article is pointless.. I mean, when you start paying taxes, where does the money go? Really, think about it.

i tried to buy a housefor my son with a black realtor and she told me i had 100% financing she told me to give her 10,000.00 good faith deposit two day before closing she said i needed another 23,000.00 i didn’t want to put more money out so in short with her i lost 10,000.00 and she said oh well. i am glad i listened to my mother. i was mad but i let it go about eight month later the same house had to be sold so i went through a white realtor and bought the house with cash for 40% lower than original. i purposely invited the black realtor to a party with thirty new clients who was able to purchase with in the next month she was happy then i let the white realtor get all of my friends to dat 18 of the thirty bought houses from the white realtor and nonewith the black because i told them not to or our friendship will be over period..so i think integrity resides with the individual not the color. so if you have a customer treat them right because you never know who they are connected to. my son now have a 500,000 home i got for 297,000 and the original 10,000.00 was applied as part of payment as a condition of purchase.
    Alex.

Wow. I expected to see some positive comments here and was looking forward to it. I think some of the comments here prove the point that we have lost our sense of community. I do my best to support black business, so I normally buy things online and if I find a black business that doesn’t treat their customers well I go to another black business that does.

I’m not understanding the sales tax and “it all goes back to the white man” comments either. Sales tax generally funds programs that states use in part to help lower-income people. I don’t even know what “it all goes back to the white man” could possibly mean; businesses must pay taxes and overhead but the exist to make profit and that profit helps them raise their families. Money changes hands constantly so the only way you could ensure your money doesn’t get in the hands of white men is to get it straight from the Treasury and never spend it…

But all that is beside the point; we have lost our sense of community, at least partially, because we trust our own people less than we trust anyone and else. We stereotype our own and we let one or two bad experiences color our views overall. And that’s a damn shame to me.

I used to have the same ignorant attitude as these people going out of there way to support black businesses. Except I didn’t care about the color of skin I cared about the store being American ran. For years I would avoid the store up the street because it was ran by Indians and one day I though about it and we are all the same in this world and I went inside and bought some chips. This guy was very nice to me and we are good friends now and if I lived further away I would go out of my way to support his business. I don’t give a s**t what race you are if you associate with everybody and treat people good you will probably get more business. This is America don’t limit yourself to one race of people, some people will go to a black store and get ripped of and still go back because it is a “black” store. When you could be passing up a store with lower prices and if you stop and get to know that white person or Arab you might make a life long friend.

I believe in supporting black businesses, at least until we see more of them around the world, which is still a long time coming. I will support them, and continue to hope that I see more black run businesses. Its not like the minimal black community supporting black businesses is going to bring the economy of other run businesses to a halt. It just means we will be showing a sense of community, as was said before. We have a stunning lack of that in our the black community, and to get away from the problems that we see in our community, [jail, low marriage rates, no sense of family, no longer being in the church] we need to band together.

I support all the buisnesses in my local community. I live in a very diverse neighbord hood and I am also multi-racial. I like veitnamese food, bbq, mexican food, and the list of ethnic food and exotic imports go on. How do I choose to only support one buisness because of their race. I would be bigot and reverse racist if I said or followed this partice.

Look, I hear all this jibber jabber you people are talking. Yo u don’t have to support black businesses if you don’t want to. But those of you who come from black communities where most of the people who live there are black and poor, it makes PERFECT SENSE to support black businesses who employ people from your neighborhood. Even then, you don’t have to boycott other businesses. Most of you are missing the point. If we want to see our communities improve and the crime decrease we have to stand up for our own rather than spending the money on immigrants who treat you rudely or people who will take the money elsewhere. It’s not so much about support black because you’re black as much as it’s about keeping the money in your community. Your community will stand still or even deteriorate if you continue to spend everything you earn on people that don’t live in your community, or see no need to build your community. It has nothing to do with reverse racism. It’s all about pragmatism.
