Real Officers would have used the distract method.One officers distract her while the other grabs her hands and relief the knife from her hand. To me the lady looks confused and not in her right mind and not posing a serve treat to anyone. The “LAW ENFORCEMENT” really need training in situations like this.

I see it both ways. Maybe the slam was a bit much but she had damn knife. All the people who seemed to care about her after she was slammed should have been the ones asking the lady to put it down before her old ass found out what the rock was cooking. I read the comments that a lot of you post, and I can only shake my head. Everything is not about race. We commit more crimes against our on people then any other race. I actually work as a probation officer and I have received the same training this officer has. Honestly she did what she was trained to do. The woman had a KNIFE!!! You don’t know what that woman is capable of doing, she came near the officer with the knife even though REPEATEDLY told to drop it. Police aren’t trained to “lightly” take someone down, if you take them down YOU TAKE THEM DOWN. Once again, she and EVERY officer is trained to TAKE A PERSON DOWN hard without bias if you are going to use force, you USE FORCE. Officers are also trained to use DISCRETION. There are rules for force applications and use of every weapon available to them including hand to hand techniques. In this situation the officer involved displayed no descretion. Number one 1 I’ve been trained in take down and riot control methods. The take down technique used in this video is not what officers are trained to use. The technique in this video used by the officer is a fatal judo techinque she probably learned by training off duty in her personal time. The technique used in this video is a teachnique japanese samurai used to cripple each other on the battle field. Second if you notice in the video people walking by in the background not even remotely feeling threaten by the lady. No one was threaten by this woman DESPITE the KNIFE. Third in this situation if there is a threat the officers job is too secure a primeter and vacate civilians and obviously the officer didn’t feel the need to do that. Finally in this situation an officer is never to directly approach a civilian with an open weapon displayed. This officer didn’t feel threaten she approached the woman with relaxed body posture and only a hand slightly raised. Once she gained control of the woman and the weapon she proceeded to used a take down technique not taught to her in professional training nor nescessary for the situation.

One “lilprince4life” the “wrist out technique” doesn’t utilize hip thrust or the volicty displayed nor does it bust people’s head wide open. Second if the knife was such a threat then why doesn’t the officer who took down the “suspect” make and effort to remove it after the take down. Third its obvious in the video the public didn’t feel threaten by the “suspect” and if the officer felt the public was in danger she failed to secure the perimeter and vacate civilians. In this video the officer showed no concern for the public. Even after the take down when the public came to the elderly woman’s aid the officers initially made no effort to secure the perimeter. The officer involved didn’t request the lady put the knife down several times she asked once or twice. Finally “rationally” the eldly woman walking towards the officer wasn’t that much of a threat for the simply fact the elderly lady wasn’t really walking. The elderly lady had a CANE. How can she be a knife weilding threat without the use of her hips or even being able to stand up straight. The officer in the video closed the gap between the the elderly lady and herself. The officer had to walk towards the elderly lady with the CANE. The officer closed the distance with relaxed posture and showing no signs of feeling threaten by the eldery woman with the CANE who could barely walk or stand up straight. Like I said officers are trained to think with descretion and this officer displayed none in this situation. THE VIDEO SPEAKS FOR ITSELF I’m done

The officer that responded, who by the way was cool with EVERYONE in my neighborhood…and white, knocked on the door and when the man inside opened the door he blew the officers face off and killed him. Whitehall, for the most part, is a non-violent suburb of Columbus, Ohio. Things like this are uncommon. In this case, granny was wrong. The officer asked her nicely to put the knife down and she refused. No one is above the law. Not even black people.

I didn’t see any excessive force, only a take-down move, which had to be used to get the knife out of her hand. That was really uncalled for. That lady was like 85 years old all they had to do was grab her wrist and take the knife out of her hand it is common since. Hopefully they don’t get away with that because she is obviously out of her mind and frail as hell.

what if the old lady knew some knife combat skills and stabbed the officer in the neck?
some people say that’s excessive force, i say that was the right amount of force necessary to subdue the subject.

Okay here’s my take on the video that’s posted here on News One. When the officers of any city respond to a call, I’m pretty sure there are certain considerations they have to make about each situation. Let’s go over some of the things. #1 The incident took place on private property, (Walmart). #2 We don’t know if Walmart’s Security, was aware of the situation. So chances are pretty good that the call to the police was made by a Walmart shopper in the parking lot. #3 Obviously by her appearance she was a frail elderly woman, saying something while waving a knife with about a 4-inch blade. From what I could hear she was possibly in her 80′s. #4 Initially two Whitehall, Ohio “police officers” arrived on the scene. The female officer was saying something to the effect of put the knife down…drop the knife down and the next thing I know she performed what seemed like an arm-bar take-down. I’m pretty sure that the police force up there in Ohio, who are sworn to protect & to serve can use a little lest force when taking down an elderly woman. I’m just guessing.

The following are directed more towards the judgement of the female police officer. Although if she wanted to know my personal opinion I would think it would be wise for her to consider a career change. Either way it’s not a good look on her career path to have body slamming an elder whether she was right, wrong or mentally disturbed in her human resources jacket. Can you imagine what must have gone through her head while she was writing her report at the end of the her day? C’mon a ‘old lady’…get outta here with that mess. From what I saw on the video, was at least a clear case of police brutality and a display of unnecessary force. I’d like to hear her explanation. Wouldn’t you? That elder could have been delusional. Heck the police officer could have been delusional too. Meaning possibly experience a psychiatric fit. Here’s something to think about if you watch the video again because it’s obvious there were some judgements made to get this officer the end that clearly didn’t justify the means. That is the officers carried guns & tasers on their belts. Most police officers may have a pepper spray. Some police cruisers may or may not have a bull-horn. Now again this is a Walmart, parking lot. The elderly woman seeminly poses no threat to anyone but herself, because shoppers, men, women & children are passing right by her. The elder’s not chasing anyone with the knife or stabbing anyone. So with all that said. Female officer, why didn’t you negotiate with her from a distance first? What was the rush about? I’m wondering if you were taught any part of negotiating all. I’m just guessing hear. Maybe asking her, ‘Ma’am what’s your name?’ would have been a good place to start. At least you would have started some dialogue with her. If she couldn’t answer that question. Then maybe you would have thought maybe she’s on medication that ain’t quite right. Then you would possibly have been able to come up with a different approach to settling the situation at it’s lowest level. Instead you’ve got people all over the country wondering what exactly is wrong with your brain waves or the lack thereof. So now you have an elderly woman body slammed on the ground. Not the result you wanted is it? Before there was now crowd of people around. Now you’ve got more attention than ever. So much so that back up arrives. By back up I mean 4 cruisers arrive on the scene. Now your city’s tax dollars are paying for a total of 5 cruisers in a Walmart, parking lot for one frail elderly woman who was body slammed in front of men, women and children. Clearly this Walmart has a lot of customers from the black community. But what the female officer from the Whitehall, Ohio, Police Department, did to this lady is outright a disgrace to your uniforms. Your City’s Mayor should be disgusted and ashamed. Maybe a desk job would be more suitable. Short fuses going off on a elderly woman or anyone in the community should not be tolerated. Okay the elderly woman was not right for waving the knife around at the same time she didn’t warrant behavior by the police that was at least atrocious in nature. Meaning very bad, very cruel/evil and ugly. To the Whitehall, Ohio, Police Department, good luck trying to clean up that mess. Your display of “To protect and To Serve,” as seen on YouTube, is in very poor taste. It’s my prayer that the elderly lady, gets the possible medical/mental health care. Oh one more thing…female officer after you slammed that woman your male counterpart said and I quote,” We won’t hurt her,” as blood was leaking out of the back of her head. The bystanders shouted out in disgust,”you are ready did!!!” I was just wondering what was going through his head we he blurted that out to the crowd of people standing by obviously upset at what the female officer had done. Maybe you didn’t think your actions were being recorded. If we don’t stand for justice there’ll be no peace. We must stand for something instead of fallin’ for anything. To the fella that got this on video, big ups! Y’all keep ya cameras rollin’ and YouTube, uploadin’. Prayers for all concerned in that incident. That’s a wrap. I’m out!

If you watch this tape carefully, I did not see anyone in this tape that looked to feel threaten or in fear of their lives. And if that Police officer really felt that way she would not have walked upon the lady knowing her life was in danger.
I watched this elderly lady as she walked, she could not have gotten away nor did she look as if she was trying to. she walked as most 80 years olds do, slow, and with small steps.
I fully understand that it is aganist the law to display a knife as she did, but had it been a suicide attempt with a knife the officers would have kept their distance and tried to talk them out of it just to make another hero on the police force.
This truly made me sick. All the police that arrived was uncalled for, then again I am sure they were thinking of all kind of ways to cover their As**s.
The question for me is this. If this elderly woman could barely walk with her cane, why could they have not sprayed her to subdue her, or wait until back up arrived, and took her down a in a safer manner. This woman was down right body slammed to the ground. And you know what? The sad thing is that with all the tapes and all the witness she will still be pushed aside as that Old Black Woman With the Knife. Okay yea she had a knife but she probably carries a knife on the regular for protection whenever she goes out in public. Being an 80-somethin year old lady, she feels the need to keep it out and handy to walk to her car, then so be it. That does not give the right for the police to handle her the way they did, she was attacking no one. All they had to do is somehow yank that s**t out her hand( i know the police are taught different ways to take a weapon out of ones hands)and then arrest her while still on her feet. They used so much force(yanking her arm up , then slamming her on the concrete) to where that woman’s head busted on the ground. I feel sorry for the old lady but she was at fault at no time is it okay to swing a knife at any police officers she could have been a little out of it but the police have a right to protect . Did you notice the two ladies w/the infant passing by the elderly lady, & the elderly lady did not approach the ladies, (and she saw them, watch them walk by as well),so where did she oppose a threat, but when the police officers arrive, the lady police officer gradually approach the elderly lady asking her politely to drop the knife down right… & then the elderly lady got all up tight & start waving the knife, but while she was waving the knife she was walking clearly the other way, again where did she oppose the threat, she was not going towards the officer,she was walking away from the officer, but the officer snuck up from BEHIND, grab her by the arm/wrist and slam her to the ground, now tell me something is wrong with that picture, if you gotten that much of control of the situation then looks like to me that the officer could have clearly made the woman drop the damn knife by having control of the woman when she was behind her, hell she had the full power then when she got an hold to her damn arm/wrist, with the knife at hand… so why in the hell the body slam come into plague…EXPLAIN THAT PEOPLE!!!!! Do you all know what negotiate means…good…, because how many time have we watch the news and hear or even seen when negotiations take place, full force is only used as the LAST resort, and that’s speaking on different levels of danger, such as bank robbers, terriost, etc. But an elderly lady, got to be more carefull..FOOD FOR THOUGHT!!!

Ok my granny is 87 yrs.old. This was not handled in the best way period. The officer could have done a much better job than what she did. I pray that that lady is ok, and that she or her family sue the H*** out of that police force. THIS SO F***ED UP. I DON’T CARE HOW YOU LOOK AT IT.

The elderly lady may not have really known what she was doing, when people get older they get senile(spell check) but get aulstimes and things like that. Another thing is she is elderly, she did not need that much force, she could have easily taken that knife out of her hand and she didnt try before she did it she automatically body slammed her. The police officer definitely could’ve handled the situation a lot better than she did. But like someone said, the officer was in a lose-lose situation. She had to get the knife out of this woman’s hand and no matter what way she did it, it would have seemed violent. Simply because the woman was elderly. She may have resisted but at that point she still could have done the take down differently. Cuz granny couldnt stab the police from the back, thats common sense. And obviously whose quicker? An 87 yr old granny or some hot ass cop fresh out of the academy? Then to slam her so hard that an abundance of blood is on the concrete come on man? The funny thing is that no one gave a damn about the elderly lady until the cop slammed her. If people cared about her, then they should have done something prior to the cop getting a hold of her. Also, if the cop would have stood there and let the old lady stab someone, then everyone would be screaming, “WHY DIDN’T THE POLICE DO ANYTHING!!”

Ok, the lady was swinging a knife so she became a threat. The officer asked her to put down the knife and she refused. So logically the officer had to force the lady to do so right?

Now my questions:

What is the risk for a woman in that age and condition to hurt someone?
What is the risk for a woman in that age and that condition to hurt a TRAINED cop who use to deal with those situations?
Did the officer absolutly needed to use that level of force to neutralize a woman in that age and condition?

It seems there was a MUCH better way to handle this situation. It appears, from this woman’s obviously frail condition, that it would have been much better had they simply talked her into giving the knife over, or putting it down. It doesn’t appear that the people in the parking lot felt any fear of this individual; more a concern for her safety & well being. It may have taken longer to resolve it that way, but no one would’ve been injured.

When I was a bit younger, I worked, as a summer job, in a hospital with old people. I had to wash them feed them etc…Most of them had fragile condition or desoriented behaviour. Most of them needed a canne to walk.

One day, one of them start to threat other…with a knife just like the situation in the video. I do not have the police skills and traning, but I finally could disarmed the old lady without slamming her like the video. I think this took me 1 to 2 minutes to do so.

I talked to her as much as possible, before I use force. I’m not saying what I’ve done is the best way and there is no other way.
I’m saying, I’m sure there is other and better ways to deal with a situation like this. I didn’t have to slam the lady like the cop did. The cop is trained not me and I didn’t use THAT force…

yet slaming her STILL didnt get her to release the knife

ok heres the deal im a nurse i worked on the alzheimer dementia unit for ten years and if we had a patient come at patient come at us with anything and we did chairs tables tvs anything we never body slammed them to the groun and bust there head open to stop them if anything it would be that we would have to take the person from behind and grab them there has ben times when i would be in a room by myself with a patient and if i would come up on a situation like this i had 2 handle it in such a way where nobody would get hurt also u dont have 2 be 80 to have this desiese we had a patient who was a 59 year old man strong as a ox still very young and he punched 1 of our aids in the back so hard it knocked her 2 the floor and went of on everybody on the unit we had 2 call 911 and not 1 officer came in there body slammin any1 so mr skills i think ur wrong about what u say and face it the police can do what ever they want 2

I take care of a 94 year old woman with Alzheimer’s, and guess what… she does things like this all the freakin’ time. She throws punches, heavy objects, scissors, she tries to kick me, spit on me – anything you can think of. And I’ve never had to throw her to the ground. I’ve never laid a hand on her. If this woman was sound of mind, she would be in the wrong – but, she’s not. She’s completely devoid of reason, frail and slow, compared to those officers. One person could have just went up from behind her and held her still while the other took the knife. Or that dumbass woman could have just grabbed her wrist, held it tight and took the knife. The cop did not Slam her to the ground. I can show you footage of cops slamming someone to the ground. The cop tripped her up so she can get her on the ground and get the knife from her since the cop did ask nicely. Mam can you put the knife down several times? Whether they decided to throw her to the ground, or simply GRAB HER WRIST (like what I do with my aunt all the time), they would’ve had the same outcome – that’s why this is so wrong. This is clearly not police brutality. This lady was walking around in a parking lot with a knife. She could have hurt some innocent kid or anybody. honestly in my opinion…. both parties were wrong. they could have hit her with a shot from a tazer gun or the first officer on the scene could have waited at more than an arms distance for other officers to arrive and then while one is distracting her someone grab her from behind. but yeah she was wrong for walking around with a knife in a public location. but do we know her mental status at the time of the incident. as a police office you have to know that your training only covers the scripted scenes but as a human (because you are human before you are an person that swore to serve and protect) you have to use common sense.

Having worked in group homes with teen girls and in mental health wards, I know that there are other ways they could’ve disarmed this 120-130 lb old woman who CLEARLY was disoriented in some fashion. There are ways to safely restrain and disarm almost anyone.

The old lady is physically weak (she was using a cane with every step), she was non-active (she wasn’t swinging the knife at anyone) and she walked TOWARDS the cop not away, which leads you to think that she may have been holding the knife in a confused attempt to protect HERSELF. Her daughter was apparently with her and she might’ve pulled the knife out on her out of confusion. Those who are disoriented tend to be in fight/flight mode. They don’t understand what’s happening around them so they tend to feel threatened. Further evidence of her lack of strength was that after she was thrown to the ground, she was kicking one leg and swinging her non-lethal arm at the cop holding her down. Those attacks were so feeble, the cop barely moved.

This cop screwed up because she didn’t take the time to ASSESS the situation. Some of these cops (either from lack of training or other reasons) don’t take the time to survey the situation in order to figure out what the best way to handle it may be. She didn’t ask anyone standing around any questions to see if maybe a relative was nearby (its an elderly woman so she might have gotten a ride to Wal-Mart). She might’ve found out what events lead up to her bringing out the knife. Anything. Instead, within 60 seconds of driving up on the scene, this cop threw a frail, elderly, and possibly confused woman to the ground with enough force to put a nice gash in the back of her head. THAT’s why this is a possible case of police brutality.

The police have two part jobs. Part peace-makers (service), part protectors. Peace-making doesn’t always involve morphing into a mini Rambo in 2.5 seconds. While I have compassion for what they deal with everyday, I don’t feel sorry for them. Noone is drafted into serving as a police officer. Never have. They know what they are getting into before they put on the uniform. If I’m working in any field that I don’t think I can handle from day to day…I quit or I simply don’t apply for the position. That’s why I’m not an officer or a flippin truck driver.

It is amazing to me that anyone can defend the actions of these officers.

This old lady was clearly not in her right frame of mind and did not deserve to be taken down in such a manner.

For the Marines on here that say they have no problem with that, we all know, or should know how to diarm a person with a knife. The brutal takedown of someone that frail is just over the edge to me.

Okay this is about racism, it’s about an elderly woman whose mental state we are not quite familiar with! The officer should be aware that some elderly men and women do go through disorientation, some have Alzheimer and others are either on medications or just plain stubborn but there are proper ways to handle situations like this and in my opinion you cannot treat my grandmother in such a manner, i think it’s despicable! I work in the medical field and i have witnessed far more threatening situations and this isn’t even close to where she has to slam an old woman to the floor that way… If she was that threatened, she should have waited for proper help before taking action. Does she understand how fragile we can get when we get to be a certain age!!! And if she was that scared of a woman about the age of maybe 80-85yrs old then she shouldn’t be a police officer in the first place!

And guess what: I have a 94-year-old aunt whom I take care of everyday, who behaves exactly like the old woman in the video. I’ve never put a hand on her, because I know how to deal with her without causing harm – so, it’s f**king possible. She’s tried to kick me, hit me, she’s brandished scissors and knives at me – and I handle it. There are so many ways to deal with it. She’s never hurt me and I’ve never hurt her. Well the cop asked the lady to drop the knife. She didn’t do it, so the cop had to neutralize her by using “force” if necessary.

The woman’s daughter left her seat belted in the car while she ran in the store. The news story says moms found a knife in the car and cut herself loose and went rambling around looking for her, even scared off some kids with the knife.

All manner of other thing could have gone way much worse wrong in this situation. Thank goodness the woman is ok. I hope the daughter gets some help with her mom. It is difficult task when one is shouldering a burden of caring for our aging parents.

One to neutralize the weapon and the other to restrain the person. Since the person was elderly, one person was needed. The lady was told to put her knife down. If she had swung her knife and the people walking by with the shopping cart and had injured that little girl with them, then the cop would have been criticized for not using proper measures. He did the right thing. The offender didn’t cause injury to herself or others. Job done

It’s naive of me, but i hate to think when I’m mistreated it due to my color. If i were to play devil’s advocate, i would say that, as a cop, i wouldn’t want anyone waving a knife at me. Just a small nick of it could mean aids or hepetitis, God knows what else. A lot of adrenaline would probably cause a person to do something that they would not have done under a less ‘fight or flight’ state of mind. This is where I live, I am from atl and I though 12 (the police) where unfair and brutal ego maniacs but add racist to that and you got columbus, all I want to know is with all the news of cops treating everyone unfair where is the justice. That was excessive for a woman of her age but the woman had a knife. If you give the police a reason, they’re gonna take you down, especially if you’re black. If she had a mental problem, her daughter or granddaughter or whoever that was carrying on and protesting on her behalf should have intervened and took the knife before the cops got there. First of all, I would like to say that the person who shot the video did a very good job. That’s edvidence that can be used. Secondly, I hope the elderly woman is doing okay. Now on to the “POLICE”. I can’t believe that officer(white lady)used such force to take a knife from an elderly woman. If the officer use this type of force on this elderly woman with a knife, Just imagine what the officer (the lady) will do on a call that involve someone with a gun, I guess the officer(the lady)will shoot and ask question later. It seem that she does not know the take down procedure. If this officer has to use force on a elderly woman, I can just imagine what type of force (SHE)the officer use on younger people (ex. teenager). First off let me say this,

I am not against the police they are needed to enforce the law and to ensure public safety, but there is a line that should not be crossed when it comes to using force. First you have to consider if that person poses a threat to themselves and the community. Simply possessing a weapon is not justifiable cause for certain types of force, there is a limit. If the lady had brass knuckles which are considered as a deadly weapon would you still body slam and old lady or any old person who is on a cane? Your use of force would determine it to be excessive depending on how extreme or necessary that force is. I know the lady had a knife, but who could not run from an old lady? Police are trained to disarm, subdue, and restrain suspects without using deadly force. This woman could have died of a heart attack, or broke her hip, and we see from the video that she did hit her head because there was blood everywhere. I think this female officer needs to loose her job because she obviously does not have good judgment and to me that is more important since she is carrying a gun and given the responsibility to enforce the law and public safety. Forget sensitivity training, paid leave, or anything else that would delay her immediate dismissal from her position of authority and responsibility. One might suggest that I am insane because this woman did have a knife. I would say that insanity is defined as the ability to reason well and be realistic and by that definition the police officer has clearly lost her mind.

It is excessive force when you take down an 80 year old fragile woman. She is not even a large elderly woman. But this is not about race it is about respect for the elderly. It is elder abuse and total disrespect. Yes she did have a knife, but they ever thought maybe she has Alzheimers or some other illness. Also why couldn’t the very large woman cop use her stick to knock the knife out of her hand. Why did she have to take an 80 year old woman down. There is no way this is justifiable by any standards of the law. It is also about her upbringing. The female officer has not respect for the elderly. Facts the lady attacked a little boy and was running up to random ppl in the parking lot waving the knife, the police responded due to a customer at wal-mart called and reported the issue, the woman has alzheimer. The police asked her serveral times to release the knife, but also there was no way for them to determine the woman has alzheimers and since she did the question that stands; why was she in public unsupervised? Where is the party responsible for her, and why do you allow her in public with a concealed knife? Not why did the police officer slam her to get the knife out of her hand? ugh!

Ok,she was walking around with a knife. Clearly from this footage, there was no harm done. Who’s to say that wasn’t her protection? Just like carrying mace or any other weapon of choice. She’s in her 80′s and from the looks of Ohio, it isn’t safe for her. When the officer walked up to her, the lady tried to move so she can continue on her way…the cop could have just took it out of her hand, no…she slams the elderly like she’s a rag doll. The kids who made the video should be slapped for taking such piss poor footage. They spent their best footage on the ass instead of the opportunity watching the actual bodyslam. Here’s another side to think about:

The woman in the video ultimately, was a threat to BLACK people. Most, if not all the people in that video walking around that parking lot were black. So, if somebody got stabbed or cut, it would have been somebody BLACK.

Did the police officer use a bit of excessive force? Probably. But, at the end of the day, you can’t deny that he told her to put the knife down & she POINTED the knife at him! That’s inexcusable WHOEVER you are.

I’m all against police brutality when there’s an unarmed kid or person that gets shot in the back or beat down. But this? This is a case of someone who was DANGEROUS (ANYBODY with a knife in public can be–all they have to do is cut someone), possibly even to herself. This is kind of embarrassing. I think there are some extreme responses to this. We can’t act like every incident is the next Rodney King. Like someone mentioned, you can get shot for refusing to drop a knife. I agree she doesn’t look like much of a threat, but something had to be done. I’ve been cut before, and no matter how old the lady is, getting cut or stabbed by her would hurt. A lot of people came up after the fact, as if they were really concerned for the older lady. Shouldn’t one of those concerned people have gotten the knife from her before the cops even showed up? That might have prevented the entire incident.

If it were my grandmother, I would be pissed. But I’d take some responsibility for letting her get out there like that with a knife.

I’m watching the video again and start to really think about dealing with mentally ill populations. It would have been interesting to see how people would have responded if the older lady had slit hr own wrist while the police sat there talking instead of taking actions. After watching the video, it just all seemed very excessive to me. Yes, she needed to be subdued, but there was no need for such force. There were two officers on the scene and she should have waited for her partner that way she wouldn’t have had to throw the woman to the ground and bust her head open. There was just no excuse for that. The lady was obviously not in her right state of mind and it could have been handled very differently. Sometimes we try so hard not to use the race card that we get caught up in blaming ourselves for a situation that could have definitely been dealt with differently and would have been dealt with differently if it were another race. It is no different with Police they have fears and sometimes those fears over-ride their common sense and I’m sorry but that female officer did not use any in that situation.

The two young ladies who passed by her thought her harmless enough to push a child past her in a cart, as well as a smaller baby, and yet the police (who are taught to deal with situations like this) thought their lives were in danger around this woman? They become afraid because they can’t remember who they are, where they are and the people around them. My grandmother doesn’t know who I am 90% of the time. I have seen it all. I am a certified nurses assistant and the elderly are strong. In my job field we are trained to deal with them. The force needed in this situation was wrong. I am sure in training cops are taught how to disarm someone without causing major bodily injuries. I can understand that the officer had to take precautions. At the same time though she should of know how to take that knife away from an elderly woman without busting her head wide open. Some of our officers are stressed and scared. Regardless of that they are trained to keep a level head at all times. No one won in this case. An elderly woman was hurt and an officer has to live with the fact that she hurt a confused human being and the crazy part to it all is that it was all caught on tape.

It is sad about what happened to the old broad but the law does not discriminate against age. It’s more of a moral issue that people should not mistreat the elderly. Sometimes you gotta forget the morals and handle your business. I would’ve slammed that old b***h too. She could’ve hurt someone in that parking lot. She old and knocking at deaths door anyway.
