In his first press conference as President-Elect, Barack Obama famously referred to himself as a mutt comparing himself to dog of impure breed. Many people thought he was disrespecting his own mixed race heritage, but I thought it was brilliant self-deprecating humor acknowledging his mixed race background and also acknowledging that people of biracial background have previously been seen as impure. The irony of the statement was that the mutt was about to be in the White House. Now when biracial children are teased
and called mutts, zebras or mulattos, they can say, “So is the President.”
Being of mixed race when one parent is black and the other is white can be complicated to categorize. Because of the old “one-drop” rule, most Euro-African biracials have been categorized as Black. I agree with this generalization somewhat but it does not tell the whole story. I believe that being biracial is a category within being black or African-American. Historically, biracials have been given the same legal treatment as blacks.
Biracials have always been part of the struggle for African-American freedom. Through the struggle against slavery, the Civil Rights movement, and the global struggle for African rights.
That said, here’s a list of several Euro-African Americans who have contributed to the struggle for freedom, rights, and acceptance of African-Americans.
It’s expected nearly 75 million Americans will identify with more than one
race by 2050. It’s a powerful new force that cannot be ignored.

I have news for all. Everybody is black. Whether you want to admit it or not. There isn’t any need for discussion. Through out generations yours ancestors down the line color had changed either through slavery or from the area they resided in. Think I’m crazy. No, I am just a self educated proud black woman. The school system is setup so that you won’t love yourself . Oooh and by the way to my knowledge we already had six black presidents who’s info just happen to slip from doc**entation. Would you like to know who they are? ARE YOU READY!!!Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Warren Harding, Dwight Eisenhower, Calvin Coolidge, and Abraham Lincoln. Just google the five black president and it will come up. The internet is something else. Oooh and by the way, I encouraged anyone one with slave ancestry from Norh, Central and South America to further themselves in your true ancestry.

I’ve got news for some of y’all who diss the word “mutt” and proudly use the word “mulatto”. I hope you know the etymology of that word. It’s an Italian term that means “little mule” denoting the hybridized nature of that animal. In other word y’all are referring to youselves as livestock and some of you don’t even know it. I’m not saying that anyone shouldn’t be proud of any aspect of their heritage, but that is just another form of subliminal slavery. As for President Obama, yeah I’m happy for that brother, but in reality he answers to a shadow government (yes, it does exist). And enough with the insecure white people who are quick to point out that he has a caucasian mom. No s**t. Okay he’s half white, but no one that was white (outside of relatives, of course) tried to claim Halle Berry when she won an academy award for her w**rish role in “Monsters’ Ball”. No white people are quick to claim Frederick Douglass. No one has been trying to claim these other bi-racial people. Some of these closet racists neeed to accept the fact that there is a BLACK presdient and quit trying to use that white momma crap to help them cope. Oh and how many black people in America don’t have traces of caucasian or foreign lineage? I, myself, am Nubian and Native American. But at the end of the day anyone with a “drop of Negro (Man, I despise that word. It’s too much like “necro”) blood is BLACK! (this rule was implement by whites to keep the blood “pure”. So for all of those on here touting that I’m part this and part that I hate to inform you but as it was and always have been you are just another __________(please fill in the blank with any positve or negative reference toward black people)who probably would have been in some sort of servitude with the rest of the “colored folks” In other words , as Huey Freeman put it, “Y’all are as black as Shaft in Africa, now get over it”

As a mulatto woman, I do apreciate that Barack Obama has opened the world’s eyes/arms to embrace our heritage, but I will not have any parts of the mutt thing. I was horrified when I watched Barack say that, and deeply saddened.This country needs to understand, Mulatto’s are a poeple born of America, but we are barely acknowledged in this counrty at all.Mulatto is only a word to disribe the way we look in this country, not who we are.Because supposedly, if you have one drop of black blood in you then your black… And nobody has ever questioned it, in my lifetime. I grew up and realized that when the first Mulatto’s were born, their African parents were slaves, considered property..For these slave owners, to acknowlegde these children clearly would implicate their sins against god, against the constitution, and their wives..If you have a black and white parent, you are not black, you are not white,YOU ARE NOT A MUTT! You are a Mulatto, it’s 2008, and you can be proud to say you are. As a Mulatto woman, I REFUSE, ya heard me? I refuse to let some dead white guy, tell me who and what I am.

The reason he called himself a mut was because he wanted to say it before someone else did. I don’t see anything wrong with what he said, and he never said that all bi-racial ppl are “muts”, that’s what he called himself.
They need to get Soledad O’brien facts straight. They have here parent’s heritage mixed up.
