Philly Woman Earns Full Ownership Of McDonald’s Franchise

From PhillyTrib.com:
Effective January 2010, Dawkins will become the sole owner of the McDonald’s restaurant at Broad and Diamond streets.
“I have a very good sense of accomplishment,” Dawkins said in regards to becoming a franchise owner. “It’s just really exciting to know that come January that this will become my store. It will no longer be my father’s store and I just run it. It will have my company’s title on it.”
Her father, John Dawkins III, is the president and CEO of Jo-Dan Enterprises and owner of nine McDonald’s franchises in Philadelphia.
Dawkins was first exposed to the family business during her girlhood years.
“I pretty much grew up in the business,” said Dawkins, who has recollections of wiping down tables at one of her family’s locations at the age of five.
She would go from helping out unofficially to obtaining her first real McDonald’s position at the store in the Philadelphia Zoo. From there, she would spend her summers throughout high school working at other family-owned locations around the city.
After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in international business from North Carolina State University in 2003, Dawkins decided that she wanted to join the management ranks of her family’s business. Dawkins started working at the Broad and Diamond streets location in 2004. Two years later, Dawkins received corporate approval to become a majority owner.

I have mixed feelings about this.
McDooDoo Burger is POISON, aint no if ands or buts a bout it!
we all know sumbody who gettin major paper the ‘Tony Montana’ way, but that dont means its a GOOD thing you feel me???
she doesnt look very healthy herself…..
but then again who can blame her for wanting to get paid, since most people are comfortable in their own ignorance.
“they gonna get it from somebody, might as well get it from me.” (sound familiar?)
not knocking the sister for doing her business thing, but I just dont like McDoodoo Burger…….
Mister_Wigg79@ ive heard the same about McDooDoo Burger being in the Real-Estate business !!!
SMDH at the comments that she grew up at McDonalds… But definitely better news then kids getting killed like someone else said
.
Oh wow, club McDonalds… Right by Temple… Is she the first african american franchisee… I mean I’m happy for her and all, but is this major?
At least she got a good spot… business should be BOOMIN!
Well, McDonald’s is not in the “hamburger” business…Ray Croch…said that Mcdonald’s is in “the real estate business”….McDonald’s owns more properties than ANY OTHER business in the world….So it should not be suprising that no one will ever be sole owner. But as far as this article goes….her being given a business rather than starting from scratch is not really worthy of a blog article…but I say do ya thang ms lady….
2 Gee’z
Ya’ll gotta hear what this dude said about this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8KDqhbsdx0
Hey we as Black People need to stop putting each other down every time a person is doing good for themselves. Hell no one tell you take your azz to MCDS to eat its call choice. No matter if this lady is obest or not she doing good for herself and family.
With the economy the way it is if one you lost your job and no one was hiring but MCDS you would have your azz in line for application.
@Jahz that what I thought because I use to work for them and a relative of mines was looking off into owning a mcd or in n out both which are franchise. I was like are they now letting folks have sole ownership now that would have been something to woo woo about.
And people are responsible for their own eating habits not the ff resturant
own up ordering a big mac combo with a diet coke aint going to do sh it for peeps so stop fooling yourself lol…
Well. . .looks like she eats there a lot.
@Creameh, None of us can help the stories that are chosen to be reported here. I will grant you, that this is a better story than someone getting shot, but that doesn’t mean this is such a great story. Obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, all cancers kill our people at a disproportionate rate in this country, and places like McDonalds that are ready to supply us with cheap, chemically laden foods, in place of fresh healthy foods, are some of the biggest culprits so in my opinion, this form of black on black crime is nothing to celebrate.
Why, is it that black folks can’t get a little credit…..dag just be happy its not another story about one of our children getting shot….Congrats ….y’all need help lol
_A_ and Jahz are on point and typeflow is fuffin hilarious…So SHE is who be in them GRIMACE costumes!!
beat me to that one Typeflow..lol…Jahz_Lynx1, you are exactly right about that, Mcdonalds (and I suspect many other franchise brands) would NEVER fully release a franchise to individual owners, they are gold mines. On top of all the things you mentioned, each franchise also pays a monthly fee that goes into the pot, which pays for all the McDonald commercials you see all day long.
Unfortunately, next to the drug dealer, this young lady will be the leading purveyor of death in our community, but I’m sure she, or many who read this blog later, won’t give a damn about that, as long as this young lady becomes a millionaire someday!
Franchise owners never fully attain sole ownership. The business belongs to McDonalds and its cooperate conglomorate. McD’s buys the land and constructs the building, then the owner/manager pays rent to McD’s FOREVER.
All food, paper products, even cleaning supplies gets purchased from McDonalds. It sounds like her father’s giving her the responsibilities of one of his nine stores. That’s alot different from coming up w/the bank loan of 100 grand to start-up her own business. Good lookin’ out Pops.
lol @ typeflow
she definitely looks like she grew up on McDonalds. lol
