Dallas Section 8 StampedeDALLAS — At least eight people were hurt when thousands of housing voucher applicants rushed the doors at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex in Dallas, Texas.

An estimated 5,000 applicants waited for hours to receive applications for one of the 3,800 available vouchers. The waiting applicants became a frenzied stampede when officials opened doors to the housing voucher offices earlier than expected.

Organizers of the event said they didn’t plan for people to start arriving until Thursday morning. But people who started showing up as early as Wednesday afternoon were told to come back later, so people started lining up.

That is a shame for 98% of them to be black. Is it that hard? Are they homeless in Dallas? I live in Alabama and I’ve never seen that many trying to apply for free housing here. I hope they get it together and let that be a stepping stone for better living. And for Jamal da lightskin and Richard Your mama is a n****r! You stupid cracker wannabes!

Section 8 is hard to come by, there are hard working people who need a break in their housing, but the people who just want to sit idle and enjoy the same benefits should get the job application instead of the voucher application, that would be more fair!

people can only be blamed for not having jobs if the economy is producing enough jobs for the workforce but people just arent applying for them. but the current situation is that the economy shed millions of jobs during the recession, and is currently not producing enough jobs. so, the number of jobs in existence is substantially lower than the number of people in the workforce. its not a moral issue that people can’t find jobs that don’t exist, it’s an economic issue.
hmm.. sometimes i wonder about all these “well i gotta job why not them” comments that certain people seem to have plenty of time to post all day while i’m at work..

  • http://twitter.com/Vanity357 Vanity357

Dallas and Houston used to be the spot for jobs in Texas. Now it’s Austin. If you don’t have a trade, degree or some other form of formal training, the best you can hope for in Dallas is the service industry. The cost of living has increased while a good portion of the jobs went overseas or to other spots throughout the country. Unfortunately, not enough people realized that they needed a degree sooner. Hopefully some of those in the stampede are actively pursuing job training or a degree.

Looks similar to Black Friday nonsense that goes on at Walmart or Target. We can sit here and make all the black jokes we want (talking to the blacks here) but the fact is, this is is result of the economy. People in here are trying to make jokes at the expense of these people’s plight, but I’m sure if a story were to be done on all the White families who were middle class a year ago and are now living in their cars or tent cities, most of you would probably be weeping openly.

I don’t expect NewsOne to do stories on that, but you hardly even see MSM doing those stories either. The plan is to make us think that only blacks and hispanics are really suffering during this time, while whites are weathering the storm. Media is constantly telling us what unemployment is among black males, but when is the last time you heard what the unemployment is among white males or females? Start tuning in to alternative media sites to get the whole story. There is massive suffering going on across racial lines, but we are constantly made to look like the savages. Go look at how the Greeks, Irish and Spaniards are handling having their assistance cut by deep austerity measures. I know many of you are hip to that game but sadly, many of you are not.

I have seen similar lines with thousands of people showing up for 20 jobs. Where are the jobs for these people? And for those who have them, where are the decent wages so they don’t need this type of assistance? Yeah it’s all laughter now, but after a few more years of these CURRENT failing policies, this might be coming to a town near you. And it might not be long before this type of stampede is for food. But keep the jokes coming though, because as long as you people have a Black Royal Family in the White HOuse that are doing nothing except skinnin, grinnin and going along with the program, the rest of you are cool. I wonder if you same people will be in here telling the same jokes when seniors are taking to the streets because of cuts in their assistance? I guess the safe money is, you will be as long as the only seniors they show are black ones!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Iwillbfree/ Iwillbfree

Why do they always show poor Black people, when caucasoids live in Section 8 housing too! I can’t leave out the mexicants and the asians because they have up to 14 people living with them in ONE house! This was a stunt done on purpose for the democratic party to show how many people depend upon entitlements. If Section 8 in Dallas had openings all one had to do was fill out an application (as it is usually done) without the broadcast. It makes black people look so silly and ignorant. Many blacks in Texas live in HOMES!

If anything returning vets and their families should have been the only 3,200 applicants.

This is an entitlement that needs an overhaul. I could see living in an Section 8 apartment (I know of a girl who only paid $25 a month!) but it should be under the stipulation that you are a full time student (I don’t care about how kids you got) or disabled. It shouldn’t be given out to those just because they are baby mamas. How easy is it to have the government pay for 85% of your HOME mortgage and you sit your ass down and do nothing for it?

  • http://twitter.com/Vanity357 Vanity357

A five-year waiting list? I was under the assumption that they were getting housing within the next few months. Okay, that is time enough to get a degree or learn a trade. What are they doing during that period? With a Pell grant, they can at least cover the cost of going to a community college. I don’t know how great an education at Brookhaven is, but looking at the cost of tuition on their site, a grant will more than cover tuition and books. Sigh…I just have no words.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Matureblkbbw/ Matureblkbbw

Is sad. Seems that SOME of the ppl that receive vouchers are the very ones to destroy the property.
They should have classes for some of the ppl to learn to keep the property together and a clean house.

Greedy compaines are shipping jobs overseas when MOST should remain in America.
After the Bush administration did its mess, a NEW shift in the job market happened.
People that lost their jobs during that time, will not get those jobs back. They will need
to learn new skills. Compaines like Enron and real estate lying compaines really put a hurting on lots of ppl.

All those people going in and out and she couldn’t come up with $25 a month. Come on! The building became an eyesore and it was closed down. But can you imagine $25 a month, no utilities, no heating bills?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/2Queens11434/ 2Queens11434

“Recently, the Section 8 program was modified to allow Section 8 to help pay mortgage payments for qualified first-time homebuyers. Not all people on section 8 are straight up “ghetto” so unless you’ve been in that situation who are you to judge? I grew up on section 8, and my mother got us out of the situation and I have grown to become a productive member of society. So before you pass judgement on people walk a mile in their shoes. Just saying. I’m sick of the stereotypes where people who do not have much come into play. You base the mess on what you see on television and the news, because we know they seek out the most trifling people they can find to put on air. Again before you speak, walk a mile in their shoes or STFU.

The same thing happened when they gave out section 8 vouchers in ATL.This is how they do black folks. They throw handouts at us like they do food to animals in the zoo and watch them have a feeding frenzy over it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Donovan-Kennedy/1176887677 Donovan Kennedy

Indeed. I watched a lot of the coverage, and never heard it mentioned, almost certainly because the looting didn’t reach the proportions that it did during Hurrican Katrina, for example. The Japan situation is more analagous to Katrina; and not very similar to the Section 8 story to which I’m much less sympathetic.

It’s not hard believe that the looting and lawlessness after Katrina was worse than what Japan experienced. Japan, in general, is one of the safest, most orderly, lowest crime nations in the world.

I live in Dallas and use to work for DHA this article is some bull s**t!
Most of you people on here commenting need to do some research. Instead of believeing half of the propaganda they sell about colored folk.
The article or news reel will not tell you that most of these people will not get housing due to the ederly, dis able and the people who were already on the list years prior to this stunt.
Affordalbe housing across the USA is very limited.
Irreguardless if you have income or a Job does not mean you will not need any assistance b/c 10.00 hour brining home 8 x 40=320×4=1280 a month. That is if your single will not qualify you for much after utilities, food, transpo, and personal prods to keep your a** clean to work are deducted.
Yes it takes money to work.
The work pool has long shifted(Long before OBAMA was president) and I know b/c I also worked for free for the NORTH DALLAS Food BANK, there are plenty of POORWORKING PEOPLE who are making more than 10.00 who come and get food. Whatever else is needed to provide for their families.
What most of you Fear Mongering ,Self Serving, Single Minded, Self HAting, Spirit killing individuals don’t realize if we keep treating human beings like trash.
The natural disasters we face will continue to be immeasurable.
Don’t worry all you self righteous birds will have your turn in line real soon and the way the world view is today.
People will disregard your plight and view it as entertaining as reality T.V. and simply be distracted by avoiding the real TRUTH staring them directly in the face!
Education is great , Knowledge is fine but WISDOM is LIFE! Most of you need to get it together!

I feel for anyone that do not have the strength to carry on. Black ppl know hardship and when the going gets tough, SOME pray and do what has to be done. Before the earthquake in Japan the ppl were taking
THEIR OWN LIVES! Americans will only see what our government and the government of Japan want us to see. The fact remains that they are NOT PERFECT AND THERE IS NO PERFECT SOCIETY.

Japan’s suicide rate, already one of the highest in the developed world, saw a 2-year high in May, the country’s National Police Agency said in a report, according to CNN. Among the figures, Tokyo saw the highest number in May, 325 SUICIDES The hardest hit region by the nuclear disaster, Fukushima, saw 68 suicides in May, 19 more than in May 2010.
Overall, the report shows Japan suicides in May 2011 totaled 3,281, an increase of almost 20 percent from the same month a year earlier

After Asia’s financial crisis in 1997, suicide rates in Japan soared, reaching an annual rate of 30,000 for 13 consecutive years. March, the end of Japan’s fiscal year, is typically the month with highest suicide rates.

I agree on that, there was no need to advertise for Section 8. You’re in Dallas and I’m in NYS (a sanctuary state) and in this small ass college town children with babies get Section 8 (all day, yes they may have to wait –the list is not 5 years social workers take of that), they also qualify for food stamps, cars, furniture and God knows what else.

To imply that all the folks on Section 8 are some great individuals who are the pillars of society and just because others work and made better choices with their lives they are the sickness…I’m not believing that. I am excluding the elderly and disabled. As I also noted returning military families should be on that list of priority.

As I said earlier Section 8 needs an overhaul. You want to get on it be prepared to give back…go to school/get a vocation/get off of it.

HUD has known for a long time about possible cuts and they should have changed the requirements in 2008 as a way of cutting the expenditures of this program.

Where I’m located, I can see an empty luxury condo across the street from the food stamp office. I see people all day long with their bags, carts, etc. looking for a place to stay and that big building, filled with luxury apartments all vacant because the people who built it messed up the finances. There are apartments available all over the damned place except it’s only luxury. Don’t know about other places, but in Harlem I see snotty Whites happy to gentrify.
When they get smug, I inform them about the active fault lines, lined up like dominos across ALL of 125th street! I’m always happy to tell ‘em it’s gonna shake, rattle and roll baby to the tune of a 5.0 just like it has 3 other times in the past and NY can’t support it. NY’s gentrifiers build their city on rocky, crumbling earth. Biggest, dirtiest secret going. I hope to live to see the day when it occurs. The Black folks will all be gone by then.

I dunno if the story is 100% accurate or not but i do agree the problems that plague our communities are far greater than the what is being shown . and i also feel that the media only reports half a story sometimes in order to gain viewerships Having friends in and around Dallas (including several who attended the event mentioned in this article) told me that yes it did happen but not to the extent its being played up in the news ..simple logic should apply here and the obvious facts stated ..its not gonna be about the system or why these people bum rushed the arena that would require telling the truth ..All Of It!! .. And who wants to read about that anymore?

I think my take away from this story is how can Gov Perry get away with touting the sucess story he has created in the state of TX. He says all the businesses want to some to TX. The empolyment numbers are lower in his state than any other. He has balanced the budget and all is well in the great state of TV. I guess this shows just what is really going on in TX. I beleive the comment below that it was not as bad as the press reported but the fact still remains someone is not being honest about what is really occurring in that state. Yes these were federal vouchers but all that shows to me is once again the federal government had to come in and help solve yet another problem the state could not fix. But let them, the state, tell it they did it all and the federal government is just in the way.

    Vote In 2012..

    Miss Diamond:

I don’t know who loves black people more:

The one who works for the government (whiteman) who believes waiting 4 or 5 years is worth the government paying for your rent.

    Or

The one who says for 4 or 5 years the government will check your social security number to make sure you are STAYING in poverty. And then once you get your voucher…you must MAINTAIN that poverty level. That a lot of missed christmases, school supplies, travel, birthdays because you are enslaved (in poverty) by the government.

You can do much better on your own during that waiting period.

    And Miss Diamond:

Section 8 has a mortgage program…how many of us got help and saved their house from foreclosure using this Section 8 program?

To Rattling Bones! You are SO RIGHT! I onced work for HUD & believe me when I TELL YOU! I’d get a basic caseload of 20 cases a week, NOT counting the complaints which were called in and/or people who came down to HUD Acting a Dammed Fool! As time when on its was always the same people complaining! They NEVER go away & always got A NEW PROBLEM! The 20 cases I got a week broke down to this!
    12 (Section 8)
    6 (Public Housing)
    2 (Market Renters)
    Total: 20

I guess Market Renters DON’T have housing issues ONLY the ones who is basically GIVEN housing based on their pathetic, trifling, sorry A** way(s) of messing up ONLY to blame others for their probems. I was employed by HUD for 11 years & I learned NOT only is their a really hidden society, which is NOT the General Public but instead THE NECKED PUBLIC & I dealt with 4 Generation’s of them & folk’s believe me when I tell you that public NOT NICE!

PS. Rattling Bones you hit the nail on the head! Once 4 Genrations of women stormed down to HUD ranting & raving about, “How they disliked the Management who over saw the Public Housing Complex they were living in! We had the Grand-Mother, Mother, Sister, Aunt & Niece who was the NEWEST family member to apply for Housing! The Newest family member was NOT old enough by housing standards to get housing! The rest of the women was enraged feeling the Management played favoritism to other residents, etc. I thought maybe? We should fire the people in authority where they lived and let them KNOW they can ALL Start Work Monday? I know IF I had told them that? A new war/battle would have started with them targeting me! 4 generation’s and counting! SIMPLY PATHETIC!

“They should have classes for some of the ppl to learn to keep the property together and a clean house.”

That was funny lol! This should be taught at home while you’re growing up! Not when you’re grown! I think it’s called chores lol

It’s not “Craziness”, I believe the “managers” at the Section 8 office knew exactly what they were doing, sitting back in their executive chairs saying…..”look at all the n****rs runnin’ over each other!” We have seen this before and you would think the people at the Section 8 office would have the common decency to organize this better! What is so wrong with sending out letters, geared toward last names, and requesting the people come on a specific day and not be trampled over!!!?? Bottom line, they didn’t give a phuck about the people who were coming, if they were trampled over or if a fight broke out!

It was so sad to see blacks running like kids at a easter egg hunt. Sad…..

I lived in texas (dallas, ft. worth area) a couple years ago-the only job I could find (I have a bachelor’s degree & experience) was at walmart. At $8 an hr. & no medical benefits. I left on the 1st thing smoking-it is hot, funky, & racist. I understand why Ms. Badu chose texas to “show her a$$”!

It is true-but you can say the same thing about other neighborhoods. I live in a fairly decent integrated “hood” -believe me it is not just the poor & Black. Nowadays “people” regardless of race-are just not parenting their children-the children run the home. I worked in the educational field & this is where you really get insight into the home life. It is the poor Black children & what they do that you see in the media-because it is biased. The African saying “it takes a village”-is so true-EVERYWHERE!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TK6BLIZ5GECAAXLJCR2VNW7BNQ Mau-ee

Is your mama a coon? That’s all I want to know. You know Eve was a “coon”? You have quite a bit of “Black blood” in you -but do not want anyone to know! I wonder where you get that kinky hair?

The japanese are a passive & compliant group of people. But they questioned their gov’t during the aftermath of their tragedy. U.S. citizens use to be the same way-until they “woke up” & saw how the gov’t was (call it the 60′s revolution) What do you think is happening in WI, Ohio, MI, FL, & other states-people are rebelling in their own way- Same difference!

I think it depends on the industry. I know a number of people who have bachelor’s and master’s degrees and they are unable to find employment or are underemployed. On the other hand, I know some with associate’s that are doing well and it is because of the fields they chose. If your degree was tech-related, you should’ve been in Austin. Dallas is big in health care.

There is nothing to agree or dis agree on. I am speaking to the tempermant of the conversation on housing period.

I don’t assume that everyone on section 8 deserves housing based on spectculation and assumption.
No more than I assumed when I was a foreclosure specialist that everyone that was behind on payments deserves my limited judgement about their sistuations to decide if all procedures were followed in giving them the loan in the first place.

I was speaking to the Lager issue of how we tend to ignore and dis regard anyone that does not mirror our limited perspective on income, education or worth.

We spend more time complaining in the virtual world about economic and social issues that most of us chose to avoid all together.
Yes we do all have choices. They are better served overhauling this single minded, self righteous attitude that all life’s challenges is exclusive to you.

Most of us are one decision away from being in a similar situation.
Life does not knock on your door ask you to be ready for advesrity. Good things happen to Bad people as well as Bad things happen to good people.
We don’t always have a choice in the matter except how we chose to deal with it.
All I am sayin is TREATING anyone like trash never is the choice to make!

wow media perception is a powerful thing. I bet you would see fortune 500 company’s running in the same way to get their many vouchers if they didnt have people to do it for them. If these people had news papers to spin perception or lobbyist to stand in line looking all professional would u guys say .sad..smh. Millions are spent by entities to form perception. Ever watch a commercial from a company that isnt really trying to sell u something..a feel good commercial. Well they might not be f’kin up in your backyard but u can believe they’re f’in up somewhere in the world. Are your problems with section 8 cause there are hundreds of programs giving away stuff in the millions and u dont even have to get out of bed. I bet bill gates had to run like these people a few times before he got t where he is.
Blacks do the same thing as everyone else..just on a different level.

Yeah,I agree with you Expression1,the masses of us were not born into wealth,99% of us,we are all humans trying to survive in a Babylonian caste system set up by greedy pigs that are only concerned with money, poverty is a crime in Amerikka, this being the so called richest nation on earth, yet the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.Reminds me of the song the Ojays made called Survival, when they sang the lyrics, the people who live on the hill don’t have time for the ghetto, but they made money from the people who live in the ghetto. And yes they do,from the crime, drugs, guns, alcohol, junk food, poverty makes another man rich, you can’t have the rich without the poor.Damn shame Amerikka treats poor people like garbage.

What is sad is that NYC just recently cut it housing assistance program. The tenants were given a letter in the mail saying next month the rent is on you! I am never one to look down upon someone in a bad situation but what kinda mass chaos would happen if all the section 8 recipients got this kinda letter! To those who need it do what you have to do to maintain without it! To those like myself who wish I could get a portion of my rent paid ill just work harder! But we as a people should already know when the budget needs to be balance these types of programs are the first to go. To those advocating for veterans to receive the vouchers I with you! To the one who stated people with disabilities shouldnt get them I rather a disable person who has some sort of income as my neighbor than one that doesnt have any at all! Food for thought. I have neighbors who recently moved in the house across the street from myself @ 9 on a Saturday they drinking Cobra (cheapest beer around)! To over hearing a grown woman cursing out her WIC worker because she cant feed her newborn baby she just brought home from the hospital! Than 2 minutes later she cursing out the baby father wondering which broad he is with currently!! All that energy and she could have just popped her damn titty in the babies mouth! I know all this because she screamed every sentence on her front stop. This entitlement is a disease that many need to get outta there system! The only thing in life which we are entitle to is to live and die!

It was shocking to see blacks run and not chasing a ball or a fat white girl.

I’m sure all those people running are on welfare because they are unable to work do to some physical limitation.

Like i would want THESE types of people living in one of MY 38 rental units. They can live in the ghetto/hood on the street for all i care. I only deal with people who actually work for a living and pay their rents and don’t act like animals. No wonder no one wants to live around these thugs and crack-w***e thugettes and their 15 illegitimate all by different “baby daddy” welfare babies. If you are uneducated and live in the ghetto and don’t try to better yourself, don’t even think about trying to rent one of my places. I just laugh when i get calls from people asking me if i accept Section 8. Ummmm NO!!! My rental units are all in nice upper end communities, i would not dirty them up and bring property values DOWN by bringing in Section 8 in. I live in one of the areas i have a couple of my rentals in. Furthermore, I am not even qualified by HUD to do Section 8; too much paperwork.

Very funny. They would all run the opposite direction if that were the case. These people don’t want jobs. They want their generation to generation to GENERATION FREE handouts. The word WORK to them is a foreign one.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LN2DQ5AYQNQFRBFVLFOH5NWMGQ B. Carter

Oh please, and this is news how and why? If it were white people running around trampling one another to get (another) free ride, then that would be news! This is just another normal day in the park/life for the black culture. I am actually surprised no one was shot.
