Let’s look at it this way. The original Africans called themselves “People”. Using terms like Black, Negro are European racial inventions. As I consider it, the Negro usage seems akin to grouping “Retarded” along with “Special Needs” or “Handicapped” on a form. Yes; both are previously acceptable terms….
I agree that retarded was previously acceptable but now it’s considered a slur and shouldn’t be used. As the mom of a child with special needs the word retarded is used today to attack my child, not categorize her. To me it’s as hurtful as the N word. What makes it worse is that children who fall under the special needs umbrella on the census are the most vulnerable and rarely can defend themselves against the R word.

The concept of race is a socially construted myth. With all the things we as a people need to be prepared to deal with the use of the word negro is low priority.

When your lives have and remain under the control of another, you have to be sensitive. The (old!) south told Martin Luther King to ‘get over it.’ If he had, where would we be now? There are still forces in this country who want to turn back the clock, which is why they are called conservatives. There are other forces still who want to eliminate blacks because in their minds, we already served our purpose and now they have the Mexicans to do what we once had to do. As a Black man, I must say that I have never been offended by the word Negro. I am much more offended by the hypocracy of Republican politicians seeking to utilize an unfortunate phrase used by an old White man raised in an era when African-Americans were known as Negros and worse or the inclusion of the word Negro on a census form. Negro was never a racial epithet nor was it widely used disparagingly. African-Americans or Blacks, whatever your preference, today, may want to avoid being labeled “Negro” because of its perceived relationship to the lower social status offered our race during the time that the phrase was widely in use. However, like the overwhelming misperception of the truly heroic character of Hariet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom, the phrase Negro is misperceived. Negro was the politically correct reference in its day. If we accept that Negro is a term unworthy of us, then we condem Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglas, Madam C. J. Walker and others, who were Negros at the time, as unworthy. I would think by now that we know who we are and that we are capable of knowing the difference between Negro and “spear chucker.” If we are going to get excited about something, let’s get excited about moving the current national political agenda forward so that we can get to a place where we can address those issues that may be more important locally, like jobs, education, safety and the environment, to name a few.

What is the root of the word Negro ? It simply means Black or better yet Dark. So what is the difference ?

We get upset about things that are not that important but the multitude of things that we should be concerned about we’re quiet. Some of us walk around using the other “N” word but thats a joke, we don’t hold our politician accountable for so many things just because they’re Black! Our children are falling so far behind in school yet we can’t make PTA meetings. We spend our dollars in the wrong places and for the wrong things. WAKEUP!!! At this point in time we have much work to do and more important things to deal with. The term Nego (Spanish for Black) does not bother me and it is on my birth certificate. I proudly consider myself a member of the Black race. The term African-American is more like a catagory. There are a lot of people who are decendents of Africa who live in American who are White (a lot of them are friends of mine from South Africa) – In my book that would classify them as African-American. Anyway “People” we have to move FORWARD. We have to think about our families, our children, their education and so on. As long as the other “N” word does not appear let’s leave it alone.

On the question of race, I have always wondered why this question was necessary. My race is HUMAN. In class last Thursday night, I asked my professor, “what other race is it to choose from?” He has practice law for 30 plus years and could not answer.
