On a blog called NYT Pick, the author criticized the New York Times for their recent annual Holiday Gift Guide, called “Of Color/Stylish Gifts.” Here’s what they said.

We don’t like to throw around words like “racist” in the same sentence as the NYT’s name, but there’s no other word we can think of to describe this page in the NYT’s annual Holiday Gift Guide — called “Of Color/Stylish Gifts” and aimed exclusively at the paper’s non-white readers.

They go on to outline the details of the “Of Color” gift guide.

Can you imagine the NYT designating a section of its Holiday Gift Guide to presents made “for and by white people”? Or Jews? Or Chinese? Of course you can’t.

We welcome NYTPicker readers of any color to click here and see the page for themselves.

The gift suggestions include:

– “The Mocha Guide To Military Life,” a book for black women whose husbands or boyfriends serve in the armed forces.

–”Hair Rules,” a hair-care product for a hair-stylist “hero to Michelle Obama and Alicia Keys” that includes a travel kit for kinky hair.

If Ebony, Black Enterprise or Vibe did a similar article for their readers, would that be inappropriate or racist? Because they write articles like this all the time directed at black folks from a black POV. But the New York Times can’t because…why?

have mercy, NewsOne is grasping at racial straws with this one! I personally have nothing against an ‘of color’ gift list or whatever…It’s JUST tips and lists and gift ideas aimed at a certain culture…so what. We wouldnt have looked twice if it was in Source or essence…

Perhaps I may get my “black card” pulled, but I don’t find anything offensive about the list. I think it is great that the NY Times tried to be more inclusive and sought to display items that may have a stronger appeal to people of color. I would have even liked to have seen it taken a step further and “enhanced” the shopping experience by categorizing the multiple ethnicities – further tapping into shopping needs for Asian, African-American, Latinos, etc.

Perhaps I do not take offense because I come from a city where multiple people from every identified ethnicity exists. I also appreciate visiting my local Farmer’s Market where each ethnic food group is divided into its own section, making it easy for me to identify specific herbs and spices according to what my palate desires – for instance making it easy for me to distinguish Jamaican curry from Indian curry (trust me, I need this type of guidance).

This list is no different than when a Latino person seeks out the Spanish literature section at Barnes & Nobles, or a Black person frequents the African-American hair care products section at CVS. While a new laptop or gift card may be desired across the globe, it may just be a little more appealing to gift an Asian woman with a beautiful kimono or a Muslim woman with a lovely hijab. In addition, it goes without saying that certain scents, tastes, colors, fashions and music have different affects on individuals of different races. It just seems that there are much bigger fish to fry than hostility over a gift guide that at its’ essence was trying to be more inclusive. Fa la la la lah! To your efforts NY Times!

funny I almost wanna say its seems neutral to me. Dosent seem too racist. Id ask who its written by, black or white, that makes a difference, But I would of titled it, Gifts For African American Women. Yeah its sound racial but at the same time its doing so with the up most respect.

As long as white people have breath in their bodies they will always be racists. This has been going on for decades. You see you have to know the history of white people and then you can see why till this day the act theway they do towards Blacks and maybe others. But right now I’m talking about the black people. By any means necessary white people try to keep us devided and they don’t want black people to come together because they are so scared of what they might have to go back to. Black people pull them up out of the gutter and tought them how to live. You see we had and acomplished great things. We had our own communities living in houses own businesses, teachers, doctors and iventors. The white man saw this and in this town right here in the USA they came and destroyed and killed and cut off the children’s feet to get their shoes and there’s more they took the black inventor’s inventions and wouldn’t patend them. You see that’s just the tip and they still to this day make us feel like we are the worst people on the face of this earth. But in realality they do this because they know where they came from and they don’t want to go back. So they make fun of us talk about our man and women negativity and try so hard to keep us hate, hateing one another. And you go to work and see black people sitting together at a lunch table, it will not happen but there will be a lot of them sitting together. They think were going to start a riot or something. You see Im just giving you the facts. And I’m not hate-ing. So yes don’t let them get away with doing this it is an asult on black people. Why do they alway get away with doing hurt and we as blacks always question it, evedentelly you don’t know their history or yours.
