This commercial is stupid at best. Burger King could have definitely been more creative with this advertising. The commercial definitely objectifies women – the dancers in the video spend most of the time with their backsides facing the camera, and show them subjected to the male gaze (Sherlocke Holmes with the magnifying glass).

As a mother, I was outraged, and even sent an email to my local news station to dig deep into this nonsense. Our kids our already aimed at by cartoons, video games, music etc. they do not need to be targered by a fast food chain, and since my sons father and myself seen that commercial we refuse to even buy BK, and are encouring our friends to stop as well. So far I have had nothing but love, but BK needs to re-evaluate thier ads and the whole commercial is supposed to be about a .99 kids meal, I hope others feel the same way, we have to protect our kids everyday, if not us as parents then who?

All I can say about the commercial is- it sucks. If you want to advertise and reach children, then this showing is the wrong way to go. Yes, we know young kids like Sponge Bob Squarepants; and yes, the music of Sir Mix-A-Lot playing will get the audience hyped up, but for the little ones to be subjected to “The King” and “his girls” jamming and booty-shaking, it just doesn’t cut it for me. i am really disappointed in burger king but more so with nick, honestly what were you thinking with all the child killings and sexual predators out there why would you put something on that all children will no doubt imiatate and think nothing of it!!just the use of booty all over the video in words and actions is totally wrong and we wonder why the kids now think they are growner than the adults, well when it’s ok to shake your booty in public at the age of 3,4,5 and it’s ok by the adults these babies have no chance to enjoy a nonperverted childhood!!!!!

Alrighty then… let’s see here. Brain-dead premise involving beloved children’s cartoon character – check; brain-dead misuse of classic hip-hop – check; objectification of women… some, but only if they come from the Bizarro universe – quasi-check; and finally, apparent use of recreational drugs that I wouldn’t touch – stimulant check!! Ok… so the drug use is obviously on the part of the ad-hoc ad men who dreamed up this little slice of commercial hell. It really does not surprise me too much that Nickelodeon aired this commercial… they’ve believed (and possibly rightly so) that today’s children are both smarter and more sophisticated than their parents. It does give me some pause that they would insult even a child’s intelligence with this dreck, but I guess you can’t start too young.
Here’s what I see… an advertisement concept that is so thin that only String Theory would support its existence. It was taken to it’s most pathetic extreme by dullards whose only purpose in life is to incite unthiking commercialism, the emphasis being on the unthinking part. Do I see a major foul as far as the treatment of women… I’ve seen far, far worse. Sir Mix-a-lot’s original work had that covered.
I do wonder if this is the same ad agency that dreamed up the “chicken bacon ranch” commercials from a couple years ago… those were amazingly stupid and annoying in their own right. If I were the Burger King chain right now, I’d be ditching these pitchmen for incompetence, so they can go on to make bad videos for The Flaming Lips.

As an adult I found this ad amusing but, I would not want a small child to copy it . I have actually found other commercials featuring the Burger king more disturbing.

As the mother of a three year old, this ad is just wrong! Why would you have something that is targeted towards children talking about butts and having women in the ad shaking their butts all over the place?? Any reasonable parent wouldnt allow their child to watch it. All other parents that do needs to be checked out! BK you were wrong! Then at the end talking about booty is just booty come on now! As far as I am concerned, there is nothing wrong with this commercial. I am 63 years old and from the old school, but I try too keep up with what is current. I think this commercial is strictly referring to Sponge Bob with his square butt. We Black folks need to lighten up and stop taken things too too serious. Please let’s support out new President trying to get our economy going; to me that is way more important than something petty like this.

I’m wondering if the people, who disagree with the commercial, have ever seen the cartoon? The cartoon itself is way worse than that commercial. Most cartoons that Nick put out are borderline (Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, etc.), so for the fact they put this out is not any different than what they have always done. As far as objectifying women, I really didn’t see anything that was showing women as objects, just simply dancers. They weren’t pouring champagne over each other or stripping down to bikinis they were dancing. I bet most people have danced worse in their own mirror and sometimes in front of their own children. Now if they did this commercial with Dora the Explorer, you might have a case, but Spongebob comes on at 8:00pm, which means he is prime time and now is more geared towards teens AND adults. We, as Black people, need to look past simply race. Now parent wise, if you are so disgusted of why Spongebob would be portrayed that way, why are your children even watching Spongebob in the first place?

Being the father of an almost six year old son, I must say that I too have been forced to enjoy this show. That being said, I “get it.” In the cartoon they mention things like butt, boo-boo and even death. No offense to Sir Mix-alot, but I grew up to his two hit wonders so I get that as well. I just don’t see the racism in this one. There are a mix of nationalities in the video. I think it’s meant to be both a throw back for those of us who remember the song and something familar for the young ones. First, I’d like to say that I, too, am sick and tired of the articles on racism. That being said, I’m not aiming this frustration at the Casey Gane-McCallas and Nazneen Patels out there who choose to openly cover and speak out against such issues. Actually, I’d like to thank them for making their voices heard when so many of us in here are afraid to…don’t want to…think there is no need to…can’t be bothered…don’t see anything wrong with the ads and dialogue…etc, etc. Although we all may at times have different perceptions of what is to be considered “racist” material, I’m glad to know there are still people out there willing to question the seemingly unquestionable….even at the expense of being personally attacked by those they may actually be trying to protect.

Obviously, there are some REALLY horrible people and entities out there who directly, as well as intentionally, use methods such as racism and race baiting to further their own agendas. Just because others ‘unintentionally’ add coal to that fire does not mean that we need to roll over and play dead, either. There wouldn’t be anything regarding racism to blog about if these so-called misunderstandings didn’t linger on and on over the generations.

Looking at the US from Japan..? I think the race-related issues as of late are less about color… and more about maintaining a power structure that has been around for hundreds of years in this country. For those who think that a majority group anywhere in this world is just going to give up its reign so a minority group can take control, here’s some advice: you’d better stop drinking that kool-aid. It isn’t funny or cute when schools in Black neighborhoods receive less money for resources…it isn’t a “misunderstanding on our part” when FOX news and other ultra-conservative media portray us in a VERY negative light over and over and over again (and around the world at that!). And on top of that, we’re not making mountains out of ant hills by confronting issues when we sense that they are meant to ridicule us and our culture.

Frankly, I think the day we stop questioning intentions behind issues and actions that appear racist or bigoted in the US is the day we ALLOW our selves to be enslaved again. Too many people (of all races) fought and/or died so that I, a Black American woman, would not have to choose between being a passive bystander or being lynched, jailed or beaten. I do understand the significance of that journey and appreciate those who risk their all so that it is not repeated.

No, I can’t control how someone else acts… but yes, I can call them out on their actions. For those of us who think it’s time to ‘lighten up’ because it “don’t mean nothing”…just remember where our place in society would be if the Kings and Parks before us had taken that same SAFE route. Yes, it’s against the law to beat blacks into submission with a stick these days, so people hide behind the power of the media and ‘freedom of speech’ to take their jabs. You can no longer deny Blacks the right to education, so our system is set up to provide finances to schools based on property taxes…with wealthier neighborhoods and counties receiving more money, which allows for better schools and resources, as well as teachers with higher salaries. Our police force spends its time and energy pursuing scores of Black men for selling drugs on street corners but can’t seem to find a way to stop the handful of non-Black dealers who bring it into our country to begin with. The list definitely goes on, so I’d better stop here.

You may think that all is rosy because a Black man and his family now walk the corridors of the White House, but I don’t agree. As much as I’d like to think that America can actually be that generous with its positions on race, I’ll pass on the celebrations. Unfortunately, I think the real stench of racism is just starting to raise its ugly head. But maybe I can see it a bit clearer because I’m no longer actually living in it…

To find the messages Ms. Patel is calling attention to, look BEYOND spongebob, the song and the dancing. If you still just can’t see it, don’t worry. You will in due time…as the messages become more direct and volatile. Anyway, stay blessed everybody.

It wasn’t exactly the most hilarious commercial but I still got a chuckle out of it.

I can’t believe the energy that is being wasted on this when there are far more other things we can be addressing and should be addressing. However; since it’s out there let me say get over it, BK did just what it set out to do, and that is to get attention. Anyone that knows anything about advertisement knows you have to appeal to your target market, and they did just that. In this case they were trying to appeal to the African American Adults and Kids, It was funny…It’s a old school rap, and not many can say they did not buy the Sir Mix a lot CD when the original song came out. I give BK two thumbs up for the creativity of bringing old school and kids together. I am sure BK did not have a meeting on how they can come up with a raises commercial towards black women. Booooooo!!! This s**t was corny. Women have been objectified for years and will continue for years to come. Now the fact that this corny ass commercial is on nickelodeon and in a BK commercial, which of course will be the highlight of an 8 year old’s evening when mom is not sure what to cook for dinner. Really… did you really identify with “objectifying” when you were 7-9 years old and more than likely saw or heard stuff like this? (Remember “whip it” by the Gap Band?) If you don’t like it.. change the station or talk to your kids about what they ar watching. (or like my momma did, popped me in the mouth for repeating the lyrics) Let’s not forget our responsibilities as parents. Damn people, you can always turn the t.v. off you know.

How serious is this? I guess we can be hypersensitive as women (objectification) blacks (they’re throwing our stuff back in our faces like we a joke) or we could laugh our butts off and say,they finally decided to celebrate the flat (gross generalization) butts of white women. Regardless of how it is perceived, the commercial is no more harmful to our children than the video’s which they are allowed to watch (I’m not saying they are not harmful, but I’m sure you’ll jump on this with all four feet, so why bother).Secondly, it’s easy enough to boycott Burger King, Mickey D’s (who grosses more money than any other fast food company from the black community. In all fairness I must say they put a bit of it back into the community as well.) Nevertheless, we have to stop taking ourselves so serious and perceiving every itty bitty thing as a slight. You don’t like it, get educated, get your degrees,excel in your chosen front line position, get in the business and change it.

Child molesters don’t need no luring for them to attack kids; it’s what they wake up in the morning ready to do. I thought that this s**t is hilarious. If you wanna go through life all serious, tryin’ to not agitate child molesters, go head…PEACE.

For those out there who don’t think television is an image maker you must be dumb as sh-t and have on blinders! If you think all you have to do is ignore what advertisers are pumping into your living rooms every day you’re kidding yourself.
