White Queen-thumb-40#4DBB96

This Miss Hampton controversy has gotten entirely out of hand. But, being a news-chaser myself, I’m hooked.

Here’s the question: What is the big deal about having a white girl win the Miss Hampton beauty contest? After all, there is precedent for this type of non-white representation of a historically Black institution. For example, take Joshua Packwood who in 2008 became the first white Valedictorian of Morehouse College, a well-known and well-respected HBCU.

No one made a stink about THAT. People let that slide. In fact, the event was lauded as an achievement in the long struggle for multi-culturalism and equality. Oh, how the tables had turned, they said! A white boy, a minority among his university peers, had earned the highest academic honor his alma mater had to offer. He rose above the fray. An Obama in reverse!

And yet, here we are, a full year later, reacting in the exact OPPOSITE fashion towards Nikole Churchill, the white girl from Hawaii who managed to be crowned Miss Hampton University in the school’s annual beauty pageant.

Putting my opinion of beauty pageants in general aside, why has there been such an intense visceral reaction, specifically from women, about this? Word on the street is, it’s a slap in the face of all of her Black pageant-mates, each of whom also exhibited beauty, poise and intelligence. Moreover, (and here’s the pesky seed of controversy) they’re all BLACK! At a BLACK institution! Go figure. It seems that in this gnarly world of HBCU amateur beauty pageantry, being Black is an ultimate pre-requisite to winning the … plastic tiara.

Sure, there are no real rules prohibiting Ms. Churchill from entering but the prevailing opinion seems to be that letting her run is just so the Pageant board can appear welcoming of their non-Black fellow students. As one observer who attended a different HBCU said, “They should have just picked the girl they believed to be #2. Because SHE was Black.”

Hmm. This seems chock full of nuts, don’t it?

The biggest difference between the victories of Joshua Packwood at Morehouse and Nikole Churchill at Hampton, the two “subjugated minorities” on their respective campuses, seems to be the fact that Packwood’s success was based on empirical, objective data. It was his GPA, purely, that earned him the honor of becoming valedictorian. For Churchill, it was the subjective opinion of a panel of judges, that apparently ultimately decided she was the “fairest of them all.” Pun TOTALLY intended.

So what do you think? Is it racist to feel a white girl shouldn’t win a beauty pageant at an HBCU simply because she isn’t Black? In that case, should HBCU’s be admitting non-Black students at all? Where do we draw the line here?

Also, why the hell are colleges and universities even HOSTING these events? This is high-school-grade one-upmanship at its finest. These HBCUs began as institutions meant to uplift and empower African-Americans with a quality education, as many of the most astute BP members pointed out. So why are events such as these so huge? How do they become so politically charged? Why don’t HBCUs feel empowered and PROUD that the quality of the education they provide has attracted people from every walk of life, every race? That somehow, over the course of time, these historically Black institutions are no longer relegated to the fringe of prestigious American education; that they are now counted among the most competitive institutions in our nation and that they produce some of the most sought-after talent. Shouldn’t they be cheering and jumping for joy that they have become the beacons of diversity and opportunity that they originally sought to be?

The race card, while often played brilliantly and with good reason, in this case seems to fall short. This whole Miss Hampton controversy really reverses the camera lens and focuses it right back onto the community of nay-sayers who have to confront their OWN racial biases.

Just because you have been historically subjugated and now attend a historically Black college or university that celebrates your particular history, does not entitle you to REPEAT said history.

Just sayin’.

So to answer the above posed question: Is it racist to hate on the white Miss Hampton? It sure as hell is.

I totally agree and it is really black women who are upset I don’t think the men have a problem with it…seems there is some deeply rooted hatred from black women for a beautiful white woman.

yea it is..but this is the least of our worries. Its amazing how we can get our voices heard over something stupid like this but a 16 yr old got beaten to death by his own and our voices still aren’t heard about what really matters…..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shiletta/ shiletta

It’s just funny to me because Blacks have been discriminated against all of our lives. White people can throw out the ‘n’ word and refer to us as monkeys all day everyday; men can choose a non-Black woman to be with because she’s anything but a Black woman, but as soon as someone has an issue with what Whites do, no one has a problem calling it racist. I understand that maybe it should not be an issue that Miss Hampton is White, but since when has predominantly White universities embraced a Black queen? They have not, and because we embrace a White one, it will not change a thing- it will only add to the warped and ignorant thinking that non-Black is always better.

MAYBE IT IS AND MAYBE NOT AS LONG AS IT CAN HAPPEN IN AN SCHOOL WHERE ITS MORE WHITES THAN BLACK AND BLACKS CAN WIN IN THINGS LIKE THIS.

i dont think its right and i’m a strong blackman.everthing black people are apart of ,the white man wants to come and take it over in some way.althouhg at times the white man is needed but not in everything.the HBCU’s in part is for black people to take pride in them selves.we cant just jump on there bandwagon with anything they do we have to first shed blood, sweat and tears and then maybe we’ll have a LONGSHOT at getting it.43 damn presidents and all of them white. hundreds of years later ,now one black.50 states in this land(united snakes of america)and olny to black govs.not to mention the motion picture assocations blatant hatred for black people.and although there are more white people on welfare in this country,it still does’nt matter, because they was brouhgt up through the GREAT WHITE WAY OPINION,and that carries alot of weight, just ask somebody white. positive education always corrects errors!

I thought she was Hawaiian?! That’s not white. Thats just not black. And if she shouldnt of been able to win b/c she isnt black then why was she able to enter? “You can enter and compete but dont worry you cant win b/c you are not black” That’s fuked up.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TheBIgBlackNewsBlog/ TheBIgBlackNewsBlog

jhnic47, you sound like a complete fool. The only people who thinks she is more beautiful than the black women she is standing next to, are white people and idiots who think like white people. She should not have been allowed to enter that contest. Black people need to stop being so passive.

A True Hawaiian or Pacific Islander rather, are people of color brown skin, round facial features and big bootys… its obvious she aint of color and boney so kill the “But She Hawaiian” It is really out of her hands she was an applicant, the people who picked her made this choice and are the ones who are to be held accountable, they probably did this for publicity anyway, now a bunch of other white folks gone be lined up tryin to go to school there

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Nemesis1980/ Nemesis1980

Wow….I cant hate she is pretty….and she is Hawaiian….so what the problem???? Oh cus she is not black….and she is going to a HBC, so i guess we should boycott and rave and scream. But yet instead there’s black on black crime, there an drop-out epidemic especially in the black community in middle and high schools, and there’s an epidemic among teenagers that is getting pregnant daily….but u rather use ur energy on something that is not really a major effect in the black community…my point exactly…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gods_chosenman/ Gods_chosenman

I cant hate…its nice to see diversity. We cant continue to scream equal rights and fair treatment when we dont offer it to other minorities. We as a people end up looking like Hypocrites and it makes our argument less valid. I think its wonderful she was chosen. Many other minorities look up to us as the forebearers of what a liberated and oppressed race can accomplish despite our flaws and problems (is it any wonder that blacks are looked at on every issue above all other minorities?? no small feat when we are only 36 million people and 12% of the country)….So its not right that we should discriminate against this poor girl. We have to get away from this victim mentality and feelings that we are owed the world yet we dont owe anyone anything else.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gods_chosenman/ Gods_chosenman

My general overall feeling is that Racism and Predjudiced arent exclusive to white people. Yes they have done alot (historically speaking) to earn the title. But we arent any better or proving we are a better race by showing this kind of hatred and ignorant attitude to this young girl…She goes to Howard so Im sure she experiences it on a daily basis. Im only half black but I’ve been ridiculed and mocked by almost as many of my black brothers and sisters as I have by whites. Albeit Black people arent generally as vocal or hateful. Their is almost an heir of click ish ness…In many blacks that I’ve encountered. White people will talk to you but usually say the racist stuff under their breathe or behind your back. All Im trying to prove is that we really have to look at ourselves and question ourselves more, now a days because we are under the microscope of the whole world.

THIS IS BY FAR THE DOPEST TOPIC OF THE DAY TO ME(LOL)

FIRST OFF, I FEEL LIKE THIS IS ONLY AN ISSUE BECAUSE AMERICA IS SO PRE-OCCUPIED WITH SKIN COLOR. I WOULD IMAGINE HER HATERS WOULD BE BLACK WOMEN BCUZ ONE, SHE IS FINE. TWO, BECAUSE WOMEN ARE JUST CATTY LIKE THAT. AND THREE(PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON), THEIR SELF ESTEEM…SINCE SHE HAS THE EXOTIC LOOK THAT THEY FEEL BROTHERS ALWAYS GO FOR.

IT’S RACIST TO SAY SHE WON BECAUSE SHE IS WHITE OR NOT OF AFRICAN ORIGIN. BUT I THINK DEEP DOWN, IT’S JUST SOME SISTERS FEELING INFERIOR TO THIS WOMEN BECAUSE OF THE MEDIA INDUCED STANDARDS OF WHAT BEAUTY IS. I PERSONALLY DON’T GIVE A F**K WHAT COLOR SHE IS, HAMPTON SURE DIDN’T….AND IF A SISTA HAPPENED TO WHAT THE BEAUTY CONTEST AT AN ALL WHITE SCHOOL, WE’D BE CELEBRATING. SO, YEAH, WE KINDA NEED TO CHILL ON THAT BULLS**T, CUZ IT AIN’T THAT DEEP!

who cares about her not being black but i think this article was one sided especially since the ONLY issue surrounding this isnt about skin color. if i went to that school i think i would want someone who went to school on campus to represent the campus versus someone who goes to a satillite school and is never there or let a lone apart of any campuses organizations. that seemed self centered that she wrote a letter 2 the president complaining about 50-100 people :| i mean really u just by pass all school officials and go straight to congress…like they really give 2 damns about some college pageant :| girl take yo crown and go sit down and enjoy the win

i agree with shiletta..ASIDE FROM THAT…it has nothing to do with really hating on a white woman..some of u “dancing monkeys/brothas” so quick to think black women r hating on white women..because thats WHERE YALL CHOOSE TO BE..just because some of you black men are so fast to run to white women/ppl dont think ALL of us r so QUICK TO DO the same…lmao @ “HER HATERS” WOULD BE BLACK WOMEN WTF??..BROTHA U NEED TO QUIT..if everyone had a HATER wouldnt that make us all haters?? think about it…SOME PPL SEE TRUTH SOME PPL SEE MAKE BELIEVE! We’re all different ppl who are in different parts of the world, so its pleasing for some of u to see diversity OH U JUST LOVE IT…because some of u black ppl dont feel important until a white persons giving u attention…sounds stupid, but i find it to be very true WELL IM IN TX, WHERE RACISM WILL FOREVER “GO STRONG” so I view stuff like this DIFFERENTLY !!! I’m not racist but i’m no JACKASS EITHER ;) WOULD WE SEE A BLACK WOMAN WIN @ A AN ALL WHITE SCHOOL??? I’D HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT
BUT WHO AM I???? OH JUST ANOTHER BLACK WOMAN WHO HATES A WHITE WOMAN..CUZ BLACK MEN LOVE HER??? LMFAO @ THAT GET OUTTA HEA

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzpast/ jazzpast

Im loving this article because there’s so much coating to peel off. We need to understand that HBCU are not really a BLACK UNIVERSITIES. They are ran by the elites(white folks) who donated their money for all of those schools to stay open. Hence, the people that ran those universities are chosen boules who promote and protect the elite’s ideals. Why do you think they promote GREEK lifestyle so much? When was the last time youve seen black Greeks in Greece?

Therefore, dont be suprise when more and more white folks start getting awards and taking executive positions at HBCU’s.For example, a white woman winning a pageant. Yes, she is white.Shes not Hawaiian nor an Islander. If you stop munching up this country’s lies as the truth then maybe youll learn that the true Hawaiian and Islanders are black and brown.Remember white people conquered and colonized the world, so dont act suprise that people can feel your pain and struggle. Hawaii is the most expensive state to live in thats why white people populated the islands after trowing out, pillage and massacred the Hawaiian Kingdom of King Kamehameha. Therefore, white people claim that they are Hawaiian or whatever else, but they are not and never will be.

I do agree with some of the comments that the hatred towards the white girl are coming from the sisters. But theres nothing wrong with that because heres a platform that a black woman can be put in a pedestal and be admired. However, its a two edge sword because that admiration that sisters seek from black men or men period is superficial. Black women has to go back to how it was back in the day when they demand admiration as strong black queens and not some materialistic independent feminist harlots. Sisters need to stop wanting the same pedestal of the white women because a pedestal is small and can be knock off.Now a thrown are for queens and no one can take that away from you unless your black king let that happened.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzpast/ jazzpast

Also, Black and Brown people cannot be racist because to be racist you had to have created the idea of racism. You have to have the power that comes with that responsibility(oxymoron) of being a racist. Last time I check Black and Brown people is not the dominant culture. Therefore, we cannot be racist, but we can be prejudice.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MissJoi737/ MissJoi737

First lets not use the word “Racist”. Racism is the power to oppress a group of people because of a pre-conceived hatred and I do not believe that Black people have that power..Now Prejudice…OF Course!!! and this whole foolishness of not wanting to accept a white Miss Hampton is absolutely ridiculous and is NOT how HBCU should be shown in the media..I am a product of an HBCU (Spelman College). We have to understand that although we are black historically and a huge part of our education is based on historical traditions which help to shape the beauty and uniqueness of our holistic education, we (HBCUs are competing in a global market..where we are trying to recruit the top students, REGARDLESS OF RACE! Therefore, if they are accepted into our institutions, lets please not treat them like outcasts..Besides, we should know all too well what that feels like!

The issue I got with this is that the student body didn’t vote for her. I was 2 school administrators, a bank president and other prominent figures in the school. A saw a news story and it didn’t say anything about the students getting to vote. Now if all that’s true then I got a major problem with this, because they PICKED somebody who doesn’t represent the majority of the school its a HBCU after all. Not if the new story was wrong and the student body did vote for her them people need to let it go. On a personal level though I don’t like the idea of a white chick being the face of a mainly black school.

In response to Loveli17, most, if not all, HBCUs have beauty pageants, it’s nothing new. They pick young women and men to represent the best of what their school has to offer. And Yes it is racist to hate on Ms. Hampton because she is white. I know personally at least one contestant in that pageant, and she’s talented, but obviously the white girl was better than her. If she is the young woman that is going to represent Hampton University the best, then everybody needs to get off her clit and just be happy for her, period.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rei777/ Rei777

Are you serious? Yeah, it’s freaking racist! First off, is a beauty contest really necessary in college? Don’t we have studying to do? Secondly, HISTORICALLY Black Colleges and Universities. Meaning that stuff was in the past. How about we come out of the dark ages and open our minds a bit. Third, we just assume that she won because she was white. Couldn’t have possibly been because she was a better candidate. How could she have been?! This is an HBCU! There were black girls up there!!! She should’ve gotten last place!!! Grown up, people. The girl won fair and square. Besides, this is probably why we don’t need to be having beauty pageants in the first place. People get their little feeling hurt when it doesn’t work they way the think it should…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/browneye_sista/ browneye_sista

We act as if Black folks are over-represented, and shouldnt be upset about opportunity’s that are traditionally open to us that are slowly being turned over to others, under the accusation of reverse racism.

I would believe that if Black men and women were stars of every t.v. show, ran corporations, and were on the covers of every magazine.

    But thats not the case.

The thing is that this story opens up a bigger problem.

All the “I hate Black women” people had to come out, and as usual call the Black women out as less beautiful, ghetto, and who knows what else they have assumed in their minds.

and all the reverse racism proclaimers are jumping all over this like flys on shyt.

Now that we have a Black president, we wanna pull the Obama card every time there is an instance where Black folks wanna speak up about discrimination or biased treatment and scream reverse racism…lmao

Progress does not equal accepting “others” into the Black community. It means excepting OURSELVES.

This is a historical Black college, and I dont think its unreasonable to expect Mr. OR Mrs. HU to Be Black.

THeres no reverse racism/ hypocrisy involved because those that arent happy with it arent going to be able to keep her from a job, gentrify her neighborhood, or pull her over and search the car over a broken tail light.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/panamaniak/ panamaniak

Yep. I agree with Rei777. It is racist and counter-productive. Why do you think it is so hard nowadays when Blacks cry “racism” on LEGITIMATE cases of racism? There can be NO DOUBLE STANDARD. If this was a young Black women Al Sharpton (who I USED to admire, many, many moons ago)and Rev.Jackson would be out in force with their troops. Let this lady live her life and show people we are a lot fairer and tougher than this BS. Peace.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/browneye_sista/ browneye_sista

Its hardly a DOUBLE STANDARD when racism is a one sided deal.

Two parties cant equally oppress each other…racism is one sided.

The people that are oppressed (wherever they may be on the planet) have the right to do what THEY think is necessary to big themselves up without being accused of reverse racism.

Yes it is. If we want to be taken seriously, we have to take others seriously. Two wrongs don’t make a right. There are some things that racists feel are their domain. Racist whites think politics and Wall Street are their domain and they don’t accept many blacks. Racist blacks feel the entertainment and food industry is their domain and they don’t accept many whites.

All depends why you’re hatin’ on her. For me, I think she is scrawny and has a flat butt – not attractive. Not attractive = Not a beauty queen. Put a Black woman up on the pedestal with the same bod and I’ll say the same thing. That’s not racist at all. It’s a beauty pageant, question the scoring and the judges, more power to her if she can win it while lookin’ like that.

I am also hearing that Hampton did this a as a ploy to get some national attention… However I think it backfired, the only attention they are getting is from black media not national media…. all i can say is… I’m so glad I went to Howard U… and not the institute!!!

And black people wonder why we don’t get taken seriously with respect to real incidents of racism *smh at people actually making a big deal over this nonsense*. I’m sorry but a damn beauty competition is hardly a big thing with all the other serious issues effecting black people in this country.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Poetical_Genius/ Poetical_Genius

It seems pretty racist to me. Especialy the comments about it being a historicaly black college so the winner should be black. What if there where historicaly white colleges? Would that be racist? And what if one of those historicaly white colleges had a black woman win a pageant like that, would that be racist or would that be considered a victory? And for the person who made the comment that its not possible for reverse racism to exist, that just shows how ignorant you are. Being white and black I have experienced racism from both sides. I went to a predominently black high school and dealt with racial slurs and hate crimes against the white race almost my whole life. And in fact I have experienced much more racism coming from blacks against me becuz of my white roots than I have experienced from white people against my black roots. Just becuz u feel opppressed doesnt make it right to try and oppress others to your “one up”.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rei777/ Rei777

See, I know what it is. Some black people feel like because we were actually oppressed and, in some cases, still are, we’re entitled to special treatment. We’re supposed to just win certain things because of everything that happened in the 60′s and Hurricane Katrina and any other time black people didn’t come out on top. That’s nonsense. I don’t believe in having anything handed to me. I work my behind off for every inch I get. I don’t want to be like some people who just have everything just because and I don’t want to be someone who just cries because I feel like I should’ve gotten something I didn’t. I don’t need anyone (black or white) to hand me a damn thing. Nor do I feel like we as black are just due special treatment because the past or the present state we’re in. I want to be treated as a freaking human, not based on what color I am, regardless of whether that treatment is good or bad. Those black girls were not anymore entitled to win Miss Hampton because they are black than they are to get a job because they are black or get their cars searched because they’re black. If bad special treatment is wrong, then so is good special treatment. Stop being a crybaby and hustle for what you want. Because even if someone else does play racism on you, someone eventually will notice your hustle…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/PtahUsirII/ PtahUsirII

Why would you be dumb enough to hate on this young woman? For what?
White women are obviously “in” this year. It’s a trend. Hopefully next year it’ll be a “dying trend”. But for now, hell I might have to find me one to help out my swag a little!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Splash_Waters253/ Splash_Waters253

All these comments being made about black women being upset she’s a non-black and how we been upset because they are dating black men….blah blah. Some of you fail to realize those non blacks have the most unattractive black men out there. So just to let you all know that are full of themselves “WE” black women aren’t upset like u think about your choices. I find it funny that u all are so quick to state that this is reverse racism when its clear she wasn’t a student of Hampton. Whites have their own thing where they don’t want blacks involved and now that there is an issue with a prodominantly BLACK school people act like they don’t have the right to be upset. Why is that? Its an all BLACK school, so why shouldn’t have a black winner. There are all or prodominantly whites schools out there so what makes this any different. Why are some of you acting brandnew about this issue? It goes hand in hand with the house N!gger mentality, kissing massa’s a.ss for a meal, and living in their headquarters. Damn shame! I’m so glad I don’t surround myself with individuals that would think this is acceptable.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rei777/ Rei777

Is this person really serious? She wasn’t a student? It’s an all black school (obviously not)? Did she just walk in out of the suburbs and say, “Let me be Miss Hampton!”? House n-gger mentality? You know what? I think I’d rather be a house n-gga than to be this dumb and believe that I’m actually sounding intelligent…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Rei777/ Rei777

Also, I think that “reverse racism” is a term used by very ignorant people. It implies that only blacks can be the victims of direct racism and that whites are always the perpetrators of racism, both of which are untrue. Racism is the belief that a certain group of people is better or worse than others and deserves different treatment, positive or negative, because of their race. As such, there’s no such thing as reverse racism. It’s either racism or it’s not. And, coming against this young woman, without any proof that she did anything immoral or unfair to win the contest, simply because she’s not black or because she is white, is racism and it’s wrong. Point blank…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Poetical_Genius/ Poetical_Genius

I think it’s pretty funny that people are making comments like becuz this is an “all BLACK” skool that the winner should be black. I feel like the whole concept of a predominatly black or white school is at it’s heart racism and segregation. And I really don’t understand how its acceptable for a school to boast that it is predominatly black, and thats supposed to be a good thing. But you full well that if a school decided to boast that it was predominatly white and geared for white students, then there would be a huge uproar and probly a protest. but it’s okay for black people to want special treatment and to want to segregate white people, but if it was the other way around it would be civil injustice. All people are just that, people, no one deserves anything more or less than anyone else, especialy just becuz of the there ethnic heritage. so would it be okay if I was to win, I’m half black, half white, wuld it be okay cuz im black, or wrong cuz im white?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Zeru25/ Zeru25

Those other women in the picture minus one dont look too happy.. Yeah its racist to hate on her for winning the award. There are some whites that are born or raised in black neighborhoods that dont get a fair shake because of who and what they are. Some get beat up and the people around them feel justified in doing so. But the truth is. It is what it is.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GOODFIND55/ GOODFIND55

Are you people for real. Martin Luther King gave his life so that things like this would go away. Hampton University would not be here had it not been for foward thinking white and black people. If a white university did this we would be ready to march with torches and sue then for being racist. The young lady in question is a student of Hampton and should be afforded the same rights as any other. Maybe I’m wrong but there is a brother sitting in the white house because white voters helped put him there, and not long ago in the Staten of VA, we elected the first Black Govenor. Get over yourselves. maybe the people who thought the should have won should have prepared themselves a little better and stopped thinking they are entitled to it because they are black..Sounds like racist thinking to me.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sotiag/ sotiag

Well i all i can say is if the university was white there would definitely be a lot of controversy but because of the ignorance and the belief that white is right they will make sure this situation will not become an issue but because black people can be sometimes to welcoming that leaves us with situations like this that to an extent just a reminder from them to you at the end of the day who runs this and who is in control and you will never be unless no whites were in this pageant. I love everybody but views on this life are corrupted with prejudice every where you go. I believe in karma whole heartedly. It wouldn’t be a problem if i know that events like this would except a black woman winning in an prodominetly white college but im pretty sure they wouldnt allow this to happen if they did they will definitly give him/her a hard time, bring up there past life or even use events that werent good on campus to take it away without making it appear that its not bacause your black.HUH? Who do you think your fooling?

Hating on this young lady is such a waste of time. Instead of focusing on her being Homecoming Queen, students should be focusing on real racism that persist daily in our society. When you graduate from your instituion of higher learning you’re going to run racism in your work place, etc. The students should be enlightened and educated about the racism, hating that President Obama is getting from the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaughs of the world. Where is your outrage to the increased overt racism that we see now?

I think the problem with this situation is that some people may see this as the panel’s way of saying “black isnt beautiful”. People are offended that in a society where black women have to, in a sense, fight for the word beautiful, and are constantly told their hair isnt strait enough or their skin is too dark- to see a white girl win sends a subtle message that even at a HBCU the standard of beauty is light skin, long hair.
It may give the wrong message to black women struggling with self-esteem…

    perhaps…

or maybe their just jealous they didnt win? lol.

either way, she won. so nothing we can do. congratulate her- or dont.

I also want to say that people like missstrings43, Da_J_Rok & ESPECIALLY Jazzpast bring shame on themselfs by being so ignorant, arrogant and RACIST in their comments!

the fact that this even became an issue proves that it IS indeed racism, if it were not it wouldnt be talked about at all since it were no breaking of rules!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Allie2Blaq/ Allie2Blaq

Honestly, I don’t like the idea of a white contestant winning this kind of pageant but on the flip side if she won fair and square that the way it is. I know this is really black of me to say but white folks always have their hands in everything. Black folks are to touchy on things like this because we need to be able to embrace and identity ourselves in the world. We are still planting our feet in the ground but the thing is that we need to reach out on deeper levels than pageants. And when it comes to black beauty, this is not a measurement of our worth but on the same note this kind of situation sure tell a bigger story of what beauty is in the U.S. Black beauty is not represented enough and I believe that this pageant should be a platform for black beauty. The black woman is not in high regard enough in beauty or stature. These little things because bigger ones. I know people love to blur the racial line but the line is a lot thicker than believed to be. I believe first blacks need to progress before any racial line will be blurred. Some would argue that this is progress, not in my opinion this is simple a whisper saying “the black woman will never rise before a white one”. I’m sure the young lady never thought that this would be such an issue or if she did, I don’t believe she considered all factors. Just my thoughts, I don’t know ask Jesus about it.

america the beautiful. some things shouldn’t even be important; this is one of them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/miche_miche/ miche_miche

While I don’t condone any kind of racism or exclusion, we cannot deny the degredation of black people by whites that prompted us to create environments of inclusion for ourselves. When white America wouldn’t educate us, we educated ourselves. When they wouldn’t sell to us we built our own stores. When they worked our ancestors to kill their spirits they created songs to lift them up. When their beauty magazines didn’t think black was beautiful we created our own publishing giants. When broadcasting companies didn’t have programming representative of us we started our own networks.

All of these were not created to exclude whites or non-blacks. They were created out of necessity for the welfare, viabilty, advancement and even celebration of black people. We embrace non-blacks that have come to truly love and adore our culture, music and history. We welcome those individuals that want to share in our legacy, our history and help tell our stories to the masses. We don’t want to exclude anyone but we don’t want to be taken over either. The real sentiment is this, whites have plenty of mainstream places where they are celebrated, welcomed and revered. Blacks were force to created those same environments. enviroments that are for us, by us and about us. And what we are saying to whites are, come on in and enjoy the celebration but understand we are celebrating us.

You don’t find other races and cultures being invaded and robbed like blacks. Asians and Latinos don’t carry the same burdends of race that blacks do. They don’t know what’s it like to be considered inhuman. We had to fight to prove that we were just that. The thought of that seems perpsoterous today but that is a gross reality of slavery. Dogs were valuedore than we were. So to understand this is to understand the importance of why we now celebrate us. If we don’t, no one else will. To all the white emcees, gospel singers, hairdressers, etc, etc, etc, that live and breathe inside black culture we see you, we welcome you and celebrate you.

This issue has been both the curse and legacy of a racially divided United States of America. We are rarely included and when we are, we have to be exceptional to be so. Yet average white Americans excel all the time, i.e, George Bush. I’m not hating on “W” because initially I supported him. Don’t get me wrong, excellence should always supercede mediocrity regardless of color. However the reality is that this nation is not 100% percent unequivocally based on merit. The deeply rooted fears, hate and lies of racism have yet to be buried and replaced by love, respect and truth. Until this happens there will always need to arena for blacks to celebrate ourselves, our heroes, our achievements and our accomplishments. The same holds true for other races as well. It’s just that other races typically don’t experience the disparaging effects of racism as blacks do. We are excited to have any persons join in our celebration of ourselves, heritage and culture. That’s part of what makes this country great.

But let’s not put this all off on white Americans. We have a lot of prejudice within the black community. Fairer skinned blacks have been favored predominently throughout our own history and by our own people. And while this does stem from the legacy of slavery, we continue to perpetuate the notion even to this day. So until EVERYONE begins to ignore the color lines of race there will always be divisions among our United States of America.

I truly believe the bigger issue here with the white beauty queen, verses the white validictorian, is the subjectiveness of the pageant. Scholastic merit cannot be refuted. It’s black and white, pun intended. Beauty is subjective and given the history of what America views as beautiful, it’s definitely not representative of our nation’s diversity. Crowning a white beauty queen at an HBCU begs the question, did she truly win or was it something else? Did the judges want her to feel embraced by the university or have those old mainstream streotypes of American beauty come back to rear their ugly head and in the hands of our own? That would be disgraceful.
