While I can certainly see how one would see this as insinuating that black women have bushy “lawns” (a racial connection was made when we see the asian woman trimming what looked like a large version of a bonsai tree), more than anything, this spot is just another indicator of society attempting to dictate to us what is socially acceptable. By indicating that “bushiness” is problem or a negative thing, the makers of this product want us to believe that we’re inadequate in some way if we don’t posess a perfectly trimmed pubic region and that we NEED this product. They are just doing their job, and they will likely be very successful. Shame.

Before the commercial completed it’s run, I was thinking…This looks like a commerical seen in europe. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think if you look at it through the eyes of a european, they will not think much of it. Ive been trying to understand the cause of the current global financial crises and possible solutions. Then, in the first part of the ad, the black woman’s hair is everywhere, but AFTER the “lawn” is mowed, it’s in a semblance of order. You have got to be kidding!!! contrasted by a black girl ( very cute I might add..)with big bushy hair…using big huge hedge cutters to demonstrate how she wacks down her “big bush”. Out of all the black girls with smooth, silky hair they COULD have cast, they chose this girl because her bushy hair was intended to be the comedic focus of the ad.

Also pay attention to how the shots are led into , lit, and framed. The white and asian actors are brought into our view with smooth and sweeping,well-lit shots.
No shadows interfere with our view as they use their faces to communicate their modesty. They mock trim what appear to be already well-manicured artistic pieces.
Jump cut to our black girl now….half obscured by shadow…. with her contorted, goggled face. She’s not modest like the other girls…her comedic action now is way over the top. Actually now you should pause on this shot to compare how poorly lit it is in relation to the rest of the commercial….it’s amazing!
Also she has now graduated from a big hedge trimmer to a full blown buzz saw…wow…
And she’s not mock trimming like the other girls…but now with trembling mane, she’s ACTUALLY cutting a clearly unkempt and poorly framed bush. The writer and director of this commercial left no doubt in the viewer’s mind as to who has the more difficult task at hand.
Am I playng the race card? Or is really a good example of how subtle but powerful subliminal suggestions are used to reinforce negative stereotypes?

I watched the commercial about five times, and I do not see racism. I must be slow or something. The overall message is to shave the v****a. I thought the video was funny and stupid at the same time. I paid close attention to the African-American female. I saw the female had the scissor close to her throat…Ummm, and like someone already said, in the commercial they said something about rough around the edges and then it showed the African-American woman (and apparently the lady has a natural)…but it didn’t mean anything… In Lena William’s book, It’s the Little Things: The Everyday Interactions That Get Under the Skin of Blacks and Whites, ( a great book and I think everyone should read it), she said that people throw little things out of context and think that it is racism. I think this article is a small thing. This commercial is not racism……..

Each one of the girls in this commercial NO DOUBT were just ONE of 300 to 400 actors the casting directors auditioned for these parts. In other words, they would’nt have just cast an asian girl with big wild thick asian hair…..or a redhead with huge curly frizzy locks. They had a very specific idea they were tyring to convey. I know first hand… the casting calls are very,very specific..even down to the TYPE OF HAIR…infact, now that I think of it…..I’d bet ANYTHING THIS particular casting notice called for a black girl with bushyhair!

To you it may just be a casual coincidence…but trust me..the people who make these commercials have a very specific focus on who they want for the hero and who the want for the chump.I submit that you go back and look AGAIN….pay attention to how the shots are ordered, lit and framed… and how each image is synched with the lyrics of the song. On the shot where the black girl is using the buzz saw ..they didn’t even fully light the shot!NO back lighting! Youdon’t even do that in commercials! There are a lot of play on words…but I mainly saw this as more of a subtle stereotype than racism…for instance: the asian woman is cutting a large bonsai tree while, the woman of color was cutting a large bushy hedge; and the caucasian woman had a small hedge with two tulips (centuries ago, tulips was the most popular flower with Europeans…tulips generally meant the perfect love) You can connect from there. I think the questions was can you spot the racial undertone…and by virtue of the stereotypes, there are racial undertones…but not enough to rally around; especially since there are more direct racial undertones like Delonas cartoons in the Wed Feb 18th 2009 edition of the NY Post. There are some earlier posts re: the McDonald’s commercials…ppl are tired of them or have a problem with them. I’d like to point out that McDonald’s is one of very few major corporations that HIRE Black actors on a CONSISTENT basis. I think its more of a false advertisement that racist. Schick quattro was not made for black hair anywhere!! Aside from the black girl saying, “bush” which is a slang word used by a lot of races and the asian girl with her bonsai tree i don’t see any racial undertone. Maybe I’m missing it but what kinda bush are white people supposed to trim to be singled out.

I just finish conversing with my father about living outside the “lens of white folk”; conclusion… prepare for loneliness and dealing with the harshness of life at a base level. This may or may not occur for every black-(there exist an idea/ideal called possibilities)- but for the average self-identifier life is difficult. To me, acknowledging such stereotypes only indicates how far we are [as Black Folk] from truly living a life created from Black self-perception… but such acknowledgment is needed in the sphere of White hegemony. Trust me I speak from experience, I just dropped out of grad school-(University of Illinois at Chicago)- substantially due to my unwillingness to allow ‘White Thought’ to control my experience. Self-identification is what that is needed for us all, however it is an existential experience that cuts to the bone… and its’ consequences means dealing with life’s indifference without the perceived security of White unselfishness. If we [Blacks] attempted to be creators, there’s no ending to the good potential the generations after us will reap. I think your point was that the Black woman’s “bush” was big (which is one of those negative sexual stereotypes some people have of Black women in regards to our “parts”; big means over-used and not desirable)…while the Asian woman talks about her “garden” being small. (I can’t tell you how many stories I have heard of our brothers coming here with dreams of sleeping with a Japanese woman because they believe that hype as well! Too funny!!). Also the word BUSH carries images of Africa, does it not? The other ‘plants’ being trimmed in the ad were dainty; only the sister’s was some over-grown, untidy/unkept thing that we wouldn’t dare want to be bothered with. I got it (as I was a Journalism major back in the days!!)…but as they say, ignorance is just that.

People are going to try to dehumanize us as a race as long as we are on this earth. We shouldn’t expect much from companies that insist on using such insensitive tactics to sell products. Yes, I saw some racism. Three girls, different ethnic backgrounds, playing the role that society has given to each. The black girl, with the wild bushy bush, with hair to match, grinning wide and showing all 32 whites, with a bush neatly shaped in the end as a triangle. The white girl has the petite potted plant topiary and the straight up and down bush and the Asian girl with a bonsai transformed to a heart. If each bush shape represented what was in the bikini area…the triangle suggests black women have big loose v’s, white women are tight and Asian women know how to make men love them (the Geisha girl concept). I don’t really care bout that video I’ve seen the commercial with a caucasian female on the bike with the long haired arm pits.If I wanted to find something racist it would probably be that they got you with that straight hair and light skin that is clearly not what i would call black but indian (from india) or somewhere like that to do a story about blacks but not on the racism that is felt by the Indian community in this country as well. O.K. There are WAY too many factors to consider on this. First of all, This commercial was written by and for the U.K. market. American culture and the way we look at race is COMPLETELY different than the way the rest of the world does. Slavery and segregation in America have shaped our views on what is P.C. and what is not.

Now on to the bush…

The message was very subtle. I got it the first time but the girl was very pretty so I did not get offended till I watched the second time. Then it came to me… SO WHAT!? it’s one of those things… It’s a racial stereotype but not “racist”. Racist could be cried if she had said… “some bushes be nappy as hell!” or one of the white girls saying “some bushes can be quite kinky” while pointing to the black girl (LOL, Al Sharpton would be banning Shick razors on that one)!

I find it funny that certain racial (not racist)stereotypes are ok (like big p***ses and athletic superiority), but a big bush is gawked at. IT’S JUST A BUSH! You can shave that sh*t off! People need to lighten up and embrace what makes us different, even the big bush. Don’t be afraid of it, or mad that someone brings it up like it’s bad.

That is not to say that ALL black women have big bushes… That, like all other things vary. But, when people cry racism over silly stuff like this, it dumbs down the real issues and examples of racism.

Well, I’m not seeing the racism here. I see a lot of innuendo and suggestive icons (the triangular bush) for an ad suggesting that women “mow their bush. The fact that the black woman had poofy hair,that was in a style, natural for some and not natural for others, did not indicate racism, but another innuendo saying, “hey, if you didn’t get it, we’re not talking about grass but hair” which I think is why the same “bushy” haired woman was placed in front of the triangular bush indicating a continuum of the bushy hair concept to, “the bushy haired triangular bush” Ok, you get it now?
