It is ridiculous. However, I rather for the black children have a wonderful time at their own prom than to be somewhere that might be trouble. Yes, it is nice for the races to mix and mingle but when dealing with persons that do not feel that way, just leave them to be with their own opinions and do not allow ignorance stop you from being happy and doing as you please. when i graduated high school 10 years ago………our school was SUPER mixed. a lil bit of every race. of course the black students wanted things our way. and everybody else wanted things their own way. when it came down to planning prom, no one wanted it to be boring and dreary. i kinda wish that we could have had 2 proms………

instead, we had one, a lame dj, AWFUL food– far off in the boondocks at a country club…..

most of my friends that went to different schools with more black students went to prom at a hotel downtown, ate steak and chicken and had dj’s that played the music that we all like, not just soft pop and light rock…..

i guess my point is simply that sometimes segregation isnt just racial- its easier to plan 2 seperate events than to try to make everyone happy at one.

That is so sad parts of america are still like that. I am a white man who likes black women and if I lived down there I could probably take a black woman to the black prom and not have a problem, but if I took a black woman to the white prom there would probably be a lot of hatered there. I took a black woman to prom and there was no problem because of where I lived, I have a black navy buddy from missippi who I went to visit in an all black area and I was treated like family, These down south white people for the most part are ignorant crackers. If I lived down there and was married to a black woman and had a mixed daughter I would definately encourage her to go to the black prom.

I think that this is a misnomer. what I mean is: was the “white” prom white only? Was the “black” prom black only? I am sure that there were whites at the black prom… only because these were the people that they hung out with…. same with the “white” prom. I think it all has to do with culture and music…
But I think it is sad that people feel as if they have to separate from each other during a rite of passage like this…

I think that all these students have gone to school all these years together and see each other everyday so they should be allowed to have their prom together. I do not believe “we” are oblivious to the fact that racism is still alive and well in America. I think the fact that something such as a Senior Prom falls into the segregation category in 2009 is what has so many of us flabbergasted. I know that there are still places that have not REMOVED the “COLORED HERE” signs but many of those places have no blacks one way or another. I am not naive to the tunnel vision of some of the older generations but one would think… High school kids having private proms because the parents are stuck in the 50′s and 60′s and don’t want to integrate them. Begs the question of how old are these parents? It not just Mississippi, the article states this happened in Georgia.

I do agree all of the kids are victims here. They spent many days with these same kids to get to this point and should be able to share it with them, not apart from them. Is the Commencement segregated as well? Oh! It is SCHOOL SPONSORED no segregation there.

Another prime example of ignorance at its best.I hate hearing about this type of thing. I myself was raised in a town that had one other black family besides my own. I did not have to go through these types of things and others should not have to either. We as a people need to open our minds and close our mouths and let our children make certain decisions for themselves. Senior prom is the chance to have all the seniors together having fun and enjoying themselves. You dont get another fun time like that as seniors. To separate the white from the black is unconstitutional. If the people of Mississippi think that this is morally right then they are morally stupid. When I went to Dublin High School we had a all Black Prom and a all white prom on the same night, You know what some of friends went to there prom and they came to ours we decided that after we graduated we had a party with all races together and it was wonderful we all had a ball. Just goes to show its not always the student sometimes its the parents. We made sure that the class of 1986 would not be separated by race!!! The next class of 1987 had there prom together!! Everyone I told that we had a black and a white prom said that where I was from was so racist I mean we sat separate at lunch whites on ones side and the blacks on the other but I just always sat with the people I enjoyed and they were my black friends. Back then I never thought so much about it but now I know that it should have been that way!!

I dont need to be accepted by anyone to feel good inside. However I do “Feel” and as an individual should be treated as one who does. There was a time where human rights were violated and where a different culture of human were not accepted. I think the solution cant be found until the problem is totally acknowledged. “Whites” were mostly at fault and totally ignorant to equal rights. There are “Blacks” that now prefer to be segregated and you cant blame them really. After several hundred years you cant expect total acceptance after several decades of an seemingly unapologetic compliance of equal rights. Many believe that slavery still exist through other carefully thought out forms. Who would want continuously to be apart of something or someone who has a history of not accepting anything or anyone as equal and will ensue dominance any way possible. But all anger aside for our children and their children’s sake, both white and black need to at least come to more sincere terms and live together if we are to prosper worldly as a people. That prom just promotes old racism to new ears.

Do we not have the right to choose who we associate with. I choose the people i want around me don’t you. So what if we have separate dances and activities is that a portent of other things. Not all want to mix so accept it. Just do it out of choice and not hatred.

Educational institutions provide not only academic but training in the principles of ethics & social engineering. Schools if any place should not be segregated in no way shape form or fashion. We’re putting them ‘into’ the main streams of society. You know, like the work place.

Wake up my people and quit being so f**king ignorant. It is one thing to attend an event and then only socialize with your peeps. It is another for someone to hold a separate event with one being whites only and another black only. People we are too willing to settle for anything and find justification for all the injustices done to us. It is not okay to have segregated proms, and any of you who think so must not have ever faced racism. If you think a segregated prom is okay I wish that you could travel back around 50 years ago to when you couldnt eat in restaurants, had separate bathrooms and water fountains, and could only enter in the back door. Whether you are in my crowd or not we should be able to attend an the same event. Segregation and free choice are two very different things. Our ignorance is what is destroying us people. We need to unite, educate, and elevate. For those who say America sucks, I think it is not America that sucks it is the attitude of some of us ignorant ass Americans. It is really sad that whites are so ignorant, but I am really sad that so many of us blacks are still so ignorant and tolerant.

That dont want too “Accept”, the concept of change. People want too live with the color change only. But, failed too realized the importance of conceptual changes are need right now, too accomplished shared growth. Share growth is just what it means “Shared”. Meaning All People From Every Background. The America, that we live in today, is concised of every “Nationality” That Exist. And this is the reality of those that are opposed too change, and has no broaden horizions. The are living in the “Dark Ages”. That is Why it is so important, that everyone person needs too Read & Write, so that that can continue the necessary growth patterns that Are Much Needed Too “Undermise”, these kind of people that are in authoriative positions. Especially, the African-Americans, because, we are in a new targeting zone. And now, we are going too see the faces that so many people that were lost or hidden. The truth of the matter is that people self segregate anyway. So, you have a prom with everyone at once and…guess what? Take a look around. The Black kids are doing their thing, the white kids are doing theirs and the one or two Asian/Indian people are some where on their own or trying to blend in with either the whites or the Blacks. I mean, in this age of political correctness, the LAST thing people want to hear is that people actually ENJOY being around and engaging in activities with people who share their cultural experience. It’s NATURAL. I would have an issue with it being mandated, but nature will always take its course anyway. Every person on this planet is drawn to people they share the most commonalities with. If any other group of people got together and decided to have a prom or event separate from other people, I would find it quite the opposite of offensive. And furthermore, at what point are we going to stop trying be included in some shyt that the “others” don’t want us in and create our own?! I mean REALLY. Some days it just hurts me to be white.
It’s extremely hard to explain to my beautiful and intelligent interracial daughter that this behavior still goes on in our world and our neighborhood. Like most parents, regardless of the color of their skin, I am trying my best to raise her to feel equal. To stand up for herself against ANYONE that tries to make her feel inferior. I want her to feel as if she owns the world and that there is no limit to what she can accomplish. I want her to feel free to go anywhere she pleases. But unlike most parents, sometimes I wonder if she will ever blame me, or look at me differently because I am white, for not doing more to stop this fear and hatred. My best effort is to educate her and speak out against these injustices. Stories like this one make me fear for her and all of us and my heart breaks.
I was raised up north in the 60′s and 70′s and bussed clear across town to go to school with the other white kids. Now we live in the south 40 damn years later and this still goes on. Our children deserve more. Our children know better.
We should fear NO MORE! Segregation was wrong back in my day and it’s wrong now! How can we as a nation and a world heal the old wounds as long as places like Montgomery County, Georgia allow the old way of thinking to rule. To simply say
” that’s just how it’s done here ” is no longer acceptable. My baby girl will attend her senior prom in 3 short years. I don’t want to be reading another story about segregation then, UNLESS it is HISTORY.

This has been happening for years. There’s even a movie about it and apparently another movie about it is in the works. The prom is not held by the school but is instead put together by the students and their parents. People would love to believe things like this don’t happen but segregation is still a problem. By law, the schools can’t be segregated so instead, at least in this small town, private schools are opened where only the white people in this town can afford to send their kids. The public schools are 90%black.

People of all races stop shopping at the store, after months of reclining business, the store closed. CHANGE CAN COME! It’s time for a change! Think about it and you will come up with a solution to this problem. I guess my question is, Do they have clesses together? Play sport together? Take buses together? Have lunch together? Maybe the white parents are sleep on what is really going on, and just need to wake up! I’m sorry that in 2009 students have still got to deal with racsim and segregation, but we all just need to realize that racsim and segregation, HAS, IS, and WILL be part of our world no matter what year we are in, because the ignorance of people.

I don’t think segregated proms are right. I live in Ga. and my teenage girls are in a program called M to M (Minority to Majority). They are bussed from South Fulton to North Fulton. I wanted them to interact with as many nationalities as possible like we did when we were in New York. One year they were going to have separate proms but the students protested against the committee, who were upper-class whites, and it never happened. We have to learn to get along. It’s not hard to do, we have to open up the lines of communication. Communication is the key.

What is the reason for the segregate prom? Is it due to the fear of interracial interactions or it is based on then music selection? I would get it if there was a “hip-hop” room and a “dance music/rock” room, b/c that’s not racially based. I get people like some music, and want to dance to what they like. It would be like the clubs that have different rooms for different genres. I truly see no problem with that b/c everyone is free to mingle. I am not advocating segregation at all, so don’t even go there with me. But then again, it’s prom. They all go to high together anyway, so have fun during this evening. This is completely ridiculous. You have integrated schools, and segregated proms. SMH @ Mississippi. I tell folks not to mess with that state. Someone needs to tell them it’s not 1955 anymore.

I don’t for a second believe that the students would be so docile and “sad” were they not under media scrutiny… it’s just a pity-act. If the “black only” prom were better organized, held at the Marriot, during a white-only one poorly organized in a warehouse then any proud black wouldn’t complain about being apart from their oh-so-dear-white-friends who deem them enough of a friend to shake their hand in public. Frankly, the rejected black students come off as sycophantic “Uncle Toms”. Look at all the black events/institutions in our country that exclude other people and cultures. Do the excluded people care? – No.

Does a normal man harass and chase a woman just because she isn’t interested in him? No, it would unduely elevate her. He instead brushes it off as her loss and looks elsewhere for love.

This prom question is just a case of have’s and have-nots. If said black students put together something desirable, then they could do the segregating for a change. One may coin the phrase “get your own sh*t”. Now assemble a more desirable event without patronising elements of white, western culture (i.e. the concept or title of “prom”) and segregate your event. Wait and see how many whites get upset, just don’t hold your breath.
