For those of you who don’t know, Publishers’ Weekly is a weekly trade magazine for literary agents, book publishers and librarians. In recent years, its primary focus has been book reviews.

All good, so far. This week, the week of December 14, 2009, PW released an issue focused on book reviews and trends in African-American publishing. I mean, why not, right? There’s been a lot going on in the Black literary world recently. Still good.

But here is where things start to unravel. This is the cover that finally made it to print:

PW-cover-12-14-091-600x798As I often feel when these sorts of questionable images end up on covers of magazines, I am bewildered. I mean, I’m a media person. I know how many meetings and discussions happen before anything is solidified in print. We hash things out, we argue about the relevancy, we discuss the appropriateness of any imagery we choose.

Sure, everyone makes mistakes. But sometimes, the mistake can be so obvious that it’s hard to let it slide. This PW cover happens to fall in that category.

To be honest, I’m not sure how I actually feel about it. At first glance, it seems completely offensive and negatively stereotypical. I mean, the only thing missing is Farrakhan in the background. But after polling a few co-workers, it seems some Black people don’t really see anything wrong with it.

So, enlighten me, here: Is a cover like this an example of bad editorial judgment? Or is it really not that big of a deal?

This snafu started one hell of a Twitter controversy, so there must be some weight to it all, no?

Its not as offensive as it is unnerving…reminds me of lil sambo with a watermelon….and all the little berets in her hair. I believe if you dont find something wrong with this then your either blissfully ignorant or…dont feel your black so it doesnt apply to you. Overall though it was a terrrible decision…someone should be fired.

i don’t see anything really wrong wit this image…seems whoever came up wit the concept tried to focus on black pride and thats coo with me. If it is stereotypical, it’s not a bad or degrading one.

I dont see how it is a terrible decision nor do i feel offended by it. I think it was extremely creative and chances are judging from the looks of it a black person probably came up with the idea. Black people need to stop being overly sensitive. The picks are in the shape of an afro and they are what………..picks. and the subject matter is afro picks how could that possibly be offensive. white people don’t use picks so how is it stereotypical? Its creative and interesting. In my opinion this nothing to complain about……

    Nothing offensive about it.

“We hash things out, we argue about the relevancy, we discuss the appropriateness of any imagery we choose.” This obviously doesn’t apply to NewsOne.

Im with 7th letter..I dont see anything wrong with it….I’m pro-black but just not THAT sensitive to every LITTLE thing…I mean it was just imagery to a play on words “Afro-Picks”…And how can black folks be angry about the image, when WE are the ones that started wearing afro’s and sticking the ‘black power fist’ pick at the back…We started this to represent US, now we’re mad because someone used it to represent….US….

Gods_chosen….Maybe you should explain to us how we should be offended. Im not blissfully ignorant..Nor do I consider myself NOT black…I am black and not ignorant…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/devilsgirl00/ devilsgirl00

It’s just simple word play, doesn’t mean anything than what it says, afro picks. People take things out of content all the damn time, talk about something important like global warming or kids getting killed in large numbers in chicago.

Its the white mans conspiracy to make Black people think about there Hair more than the struggle of the Blackman trying to make it in this rap game.Don’t listen to it, blind them with the “Bling Bling” and go slap a hoe. LMAO I’m J/K don’t hate me!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/VicNic/ VicNic

Interesting and creative, I think the picks represent the books one can now chose to read…..

Wondering to myself if her head feels heavy from having all those pick in her hair nuff said just an artistic ways of expressing AA choices of story, now if they had her eating some watermelon and sippin on the gin n juice while having those in her hair than we’d have to talk lol…

I like this image! But I love art so maybe that has an effect on my perspective but I wouldn’t mind having one of those picks for myself :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/antwhyte/ antwhyte

Nothing offensive. Maybe I’m desensitized but i was considering more the work as a piece of art. The group of pics appears like sea shell or corral, no?

Black is Bueatiful, Baby. The afro-picks are just a play on words, and I personaly don,t see nothing wrong with this picture, because we do use afro picks to pick out our glorious crows. and that,s the way it is Baby

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MzLyric_B/ MzLyric_B

i agree that it’s just a play on word and it’s kind of funny. besides it was probably a black person’s ides any way

    Artfully depicting the hair pick?
    No problem….it’s beautiful !!!
We are NOT wearing Afro hair styles ENOUGH…!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GAPEACH1966/ GAPEACH1966

Love it…I love the little fist on the end, for some odd reason it make me think about the black panthers and the 70s all our struggles but yet we made it…soul to my brother/sister…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Luxurious_02/ Luxurious_02

Only a close minded uncle tom type would find this offensive.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Lovingme4once/ Lovingme4once

I feel it is very nice imagery. There is such a thing as being “too black”, everything is not offensive. Remember that movie “CB4″ and the light skinned guy went all “African” and made that “I’m black” song???…”I’m black and I’m black and I’m black and I’m black and I’m back yall”……just looking tooooo deep into it. I will be the first to say I am “Afrocentric” and I love my beautiful black self. I have a natural fro and I think it’s super cool that they are showing the fro in a popular light (in close relation to reading and education) right up my alley actually.

    Very cool magazine cover. Did anyone see the last “Monk” show? I’m going to miss Monk.{smile}

I don’t see anything wrong with it. As a woman with natural hair, I think its creative. I was expecting to see something alot worse…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TASTYCHOCOLATE317/ TASTYCHOCOLATE317

I am a brown person. I don’t really care for the term black. Black is the color of a tire and that I am not. I personally don’t see anything wrong with this picture!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/calmedcooled/ calmedcooled

it’s a creative picture…but i’m not feeling it in relation to black literary works. i mean…really?? that’s the best image they could come up with? black fist picks and call call it Afro-picks? clever nonetheless…but no, not for this. and black employees see nothing wrong with it. black people are still slaves in America to a certain extent.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/No_Time_4_it/ No_Time_4_it

i dont see nothing offensive about this if ur offended by this its only becuz ur piss of ur hair isnt st8….we have fros so i see nothin wrong

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/misseskisses23/ misseskisses23

this was like a really bad joke that wasn’t funny…is that all they could come up with for a title and picture….it was a nice play on words but but not funny or cute.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sirmccoy/ sirmccoy

I do believe it is our right to be called by what we are our ancestors came from either Africa or a African nation so therefore we should be called african or Afro-american

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/saartjie/ saartjie

Nice play on words with the photo but does not seem like a nice “pic” for the front cover and is really distracting not not even relevant to the actually topic. If they were going for an attention grabber on this one it worked wouldn’t you say!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Nightowl358/ Nightowl358

    Looks fine. . . .what’s the problem?

Oh, just some blacks being overly sensitive YET AGAIN I guess. . . .

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gatekeepa/ Gatekeepa

I think its cool.. we gotta be careful and THINK for a second ..who is to say that the ideal was not created by an african american who is employed by PW? If so..then would you say its racist?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mynetworker/ mynetworker

OK VERY CREATIVE, BUT I THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN MORE CREATIVE FOR A FRONT COVER. MAYBE SHOWING ALL THE DIFFERENT AFRICAN STYLES WE CAN DO WITH OUR HAIR.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jimmy-Spice-Curry/ Jimmy-Spice-Curry

What’s wrong with the ad. Maybe folks are more insulted by the very African/Ethnic flavor. Come on get real and move on.

A fist on the afro pick.
I’m going to sit back and call it ART!
Yea, it got my attention, but at the same time it makes me think back in time.. It’s cool.
