Last night, this commercial appeared during the broadcast of American Idol on Fox 5. We, here at the office, have all had mixed reactions.

What do you think? Is it racist? Should we be offended? Just curious…

CHECK OUT MY OPINION BELOW!!!!

WATCH it here:

Ok, so I don’t ACTUALLY think this Old Navy commercial is racist. But let’s just pick this apart for a moment.

All this talk about us being a post-racial society now that we have a Black president is clearly a load of BS. Everyone knows it. Obviously, it’s a major step in the right direction that we were able to elect Barack Obama to the presidency. But our work is not done. In fact, it’s only really just begun, as the prez never fails to remind us.

That said, the racist, black-white society we live in has trained us (by “us” I mean all people who are not white) to be a little skeptical. When it remains in the recent collective memory that Black folks couldn’t vote, couldn’t ride in the front of the bus, and couldn’t drink at the same water fountains as white people, it’s sort of expected no? When your own government, the same government who exploited and abused you and was now institutionalizing the discriminatory practices that STILL AFFECT US TODAY, and remains hostile towards you for generations, it’s hard not to give a side-eye to things like an otherwise benign Old Navy commercial.

Yea, it’s obnoxious and counterproductive to cry “RACE” every time something like this makes an appearance. Buying into what has become a profitable enterprise for most major media outlets, stoking public outrage, is useless and not at all revolutionary. I hear you, BlackPlanet.

But honestly, a naked Black female mannequin?

Among the many vitriolic stereotypes leveraged against the African-American community, one of the most incendiary has been the hypersexualization of Black men and women. Black men are always portrayed as the savage, sexually-superior antithesis to all things decent about white men. Black women are thought of as subhuman, irresponsible, and promiscuous. This is not MY opinion, bear in mind. There is a well-documented historical context to these assumptions. Why do you think one of the most infamous cases coming out of the Post-Reconstruction South was the Scottsboro case, where eight young Black males were accused of gang-raping two white women? Of course, after over 40 years of controversy, the truth was finally revealed that the women made up the whole accusation. It was precisely that deep-seated notion that Black men and women were capable of such lewd and sexual crimes, the idea that it was in their nature to be so oversexualized that a crime like this could not be put past them, that forced these men to wear the Scarlet letter for most of their adult lives.

So when a Black woman sees a mannequin meant to resemble her, from the hairstyle to skin color, to the twangy regional dialect, it’s hard to separate the mannequin from what it represents. It becomes difficult to understand why she is stripped of her clothing and left standing there with her “plastic” unmentionables censored. It just seems a little unnecessary doesn’t it? Why even go there?

Additionally, the bizarre way in which the white man and barking dog respond to the suddenly naked wife and mother raises an eyebrow. How interestingly cryptic that the “predator” is now the white man and the Black man is trying to protect his wife from his roving eye. This smacks of a “Black body as spectacle” mentality, something we used to see a lot more of when the Negritude movement was all the rage, which then influenced the Harlem Renaissance, etc.

Anyway, my bottomline here is that, while I personally am not going to read too much into this commercial, I can understand completely why Black women viewing this ad might feel at best, uncomfortable, and at worst, outraged.

I completely agree with Qui_23…I laughed my ass off when i saw this…It’s a little risque seeing that children watch tv, but that’s a whole nother conversation for another day…but It’s really not that serious…I love all of these commercials especially this one..Live, Love LAUGH!!! Laughing is the key to happiness!!! Lets laugh at things people…

The commercial is using dummies…when ppl look at everything as racists its sad. Black ppl need to stop “looking” for something to “protest” about. When Lil Kim was doing the commercials was that racists too? BTW Fugg Old Navy anyway!

I don’t want to read too much into this commercial but I can see how black women would be offended by it. Old Navy made the commercial just for laughs and it’s funny, but they’re not thinking about the negative message that some people might not find funny at all.

OMG TALK ABOUT TAKING SOMETHING WAYYYYYY 2 SERIOUSLY AND LOOKING WAYYYYY 2 DEEP INTO IT
THE MAN AND THE DOG DID NOT REACT BIZARRELY..THE MAN REACTED HOW A MAN WOULD REACT IF HE SAW A NAKED WOMAN PERIOD…REGARDLESS OF WHAT SKIN COLOR THE CHICK WAS
SO SHE’S A WIFE AND MOTHER? AND? SHE’S STILL A WOMAN..
AND IF THE BLACK MAN WAS THE ONE PROTECTING HER AND THE WHITE MAN WAS THE ONE BEING DIRTY
THEN HOW COULD IT POSSIBLY BE ABOUT RACE
IT’S MEANT TO BE FUNNY THAT’S WHY THEY DID IT..I’M PRETTY SURE IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH SKIN COLOR
NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND SHOULD BE OUTRAGED BY A 30 SECOND COMMERCIAL MEANT FOR HUMOR..IN MY OPINION

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/femme-i-am/ femme-i-am

With comedy you can make fun of another race and escape being called a racist. I guess Old Navy believes if you can’t laugh at racial jokes then you’re just an uptight person. The commercial could be just “racial humor” and not meant to be racist in an insulting way, but some racial humor are disguised as “subtle racism” which is a hidden type of offensive racism. Negative stereotypes show how little has changed when it comes to racism. I don’t want to read too much into the commercial but I understand black women who find it offensive. Like the article says, it’s hard to understand why the black mannequin is the only one stripped of her clothing and left standing there with her “plastic” unmentionables censored. It does seem a bit unnecessary and negative stereotype.

How the hell is this racist?
You’re looking to deep, thinking to hard. its like you’re expecting to see negative so you assume there is a negative.
This commercial has nothing to do w/ race.
This is commercial based on sales and profit, not degrading the African American mannequin.

You end this blog with “not looking to much into the commercial” however you did. Even by making a blog on a public popular site, you made to much of it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Yes_Im_Fabulous/ Yes_Im_Fabulous

I think blogs like this is why we are idled on racism in todays society. I’m not saying racism is non-existent but when you pick apart something that was obviously meant to entertain you have a self-absorbed grudge looking for a fight. If this was a white mannequin someone somewhere would comment on why there wasn’t any black mannequins. I have this feeling that ever since Obama has been President, I’ve heard so much more about racism than ever before. I thought his election would help (not totally eliminate) and bring us up out of this. Let’s get it together people! I believe we are a much stronger unity to let something so minor set us back.

it can be seen as racist but this commercial is more sexually charged. i see it as more sexually charged than racist. maybe its both because one of the many stereotypes is black people are sex obsessed. i can see why this can be viewed as racist.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/the_quillmatic/ the_quillmatic

you know, you guys are all right. maybe it IS a waste of time to look into it.

but me writing a blog like this isn’t the reason racism exists. us NOT talking about racism and its mechanisms, and thinking it’s just going to go away by NOT talking about it, is a really bad strategy.

i think it’s fair to at least CONSIDER the implications of a commercial like this.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BlueTiger21/ BlueTiger21

First off, it’s stupid to think this commercial is racially motivated. If anything, it should have been a compliment that the shopper thought the Black Mannequin’s outfit was the best. Stop YELLIN’ RACISM every time you see a mixed race ad and the black people get more attention than the other races. I admit there are racist things going on, but choose the more blatant ones to go after first. I was actually more offended by the accusation than by the commercial itself. You want to attack a racist problem? Let’s attack the tabloids that seem to keep trying to spread negative news about Obama. If we say we’re on HIS side, then let’s act like it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Gods_Princess86/ Gods_Princess86

Blah blah blah!! I am so sick of everyone yelling racist this and offense that. Yesterday BP was talking about the new Disney character and how she is black but has a white husband. Whatever, its time to get over it and move on. Slavery was how many years ago, that’s the problem with our community and our race as black ppl we can’t move on from the past. Every race has been in bondage, did everyone forget that Jews were the first slaves and have always been targets?? Read the Bible and find out what I’m talking about. There is no hidden meaning in any of this crap. If it was a Latin woman or Indian woman no one would be saying this, get over it!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/surrender09/ surrender09

No it’s not racist, I just didn’t see the purpose of them striping the lady. At least give her some panties and a bra to cover up with instead of those black stripes. Plus I have been seeing this commercial for some time now I never notice they did this, but it’s not racist, they shouldve just not snatched her to the bucked naked.

I dont understand how this could be seen as racist. Me personally? I started laughin. Sometimes I think we do use racism or see a lot of negative in things instead of what they were meant to portray, but im in no way saying that racism doesnt exist cause it always will, but i dont think just cause these people used a black mannequin this time, it should be considered racist cause i can bet someone out there was sayin “where’s the black one?” u know how we do.

i even SAID in my piece that i DO NOT think this ad is racist. BUT, it is a point of entry into a discussion about race.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/P-CITY-MAMI/ P-CITY-MAMI

I actually thought that the commercial was cute. But then again, I don’t focus on race. It was just an ad for a dress, one that I did consider buying before I saw the commercial. I may still buy it.
Why was there no outcry for the previous Old Navy ad where the mannequin was proposed to and her finger broke? People could say the ad makes it seem as if women are desperate to get married. Or you could pick apart any commercial to analyze racial and sexual overtones…
Too much time on our hands?

See I feel that many here don’t get it. Sure its funny or whatever but let me pose a question. Could you imagine this commercial with a white or other ethnicity standing naked in a public place? In the last commercial before this one was it an african american who was acting foolish or was overwight reaching for some fast food with a greedy look on their face? Or the last movie you saw. Was it an african american who was killed first meanwhile surrounded by others. This is the second layer of racial issues. This commercial isn’t racist as much as it is racial. It points more to the underlying perceptions as was mentioned in the article of africans as hyer sexual, comedic to the obsurd, disposable and more important, not valued. See the greatest trick that was ever pulled wat the devil convincing people that he didn’t exist. The second is that racism, descrimination and prejudice no longer exist.

I agree with the blogger, I don’t actually think its racist. But when you break it down it does make you go hmm. But in doing so, it brings in overanalyized judgement the commerical. And racism is alive and well; but everything isn’t a racist stereotype towards African Amerians. I do also understand we can’t just be asleep to what the media decides to protray as images of our communites.

My jerk reaction when I initially say this commercial was: How dare they! Another example of using a black woman to exploit sexualality. She was put on “Display”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_kimberli_/ _kimberli_

Your whole article about this commercial is a raging contradiction. First you start off by adding fuel to the embers of racism by asking “should ‘we’ be offended?”; then you give us the commercial to view after you raise our flags of suspicion; then you back track and say “Okay, so I don’t actually think it’s racist.”; but then you insist on ‘picking it apart’ to prove your racism theory with an ‘it’s buried somewhere in there’ attitude.
I find this article to be a mild case of ‘the boy who cried wolf’. You have taken what most people would have considered a funny commercial and turned it into an X-files episode.
Yes racism is still alive and harming our nation. But the worst offenders aren’t those outside the black community. Its those of us who insist that we question everything, leaving nothing to simply enjoy. Would it have been better to have the white mannequin stripped with her white husband and dog protecting her honor? Perhaps you would have considered that racist yet again because black men were killed for even looking at white women and the white mannequin obviously used the dog as a weapon against the black man.
This article didn’t uncover a mystery. It didn’t solve any problems and it didn’t raise awareness. If anything, it forces us as black people to adopt the ‘they’re out to get you’ mentality which is far more dangerous than ignorance. Fearful people will kill and we don’t need our own people trying to make us fearful.
You should write about something else.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AkilSharp/ AkilSharp

I don’t think it’s racist. Yes it’s curious as to why out of all the women there, the Black Woman’s clothes were snatched off. But on the flip side, Black Women are rarely depicted as sexy in a mainstream TV spot so…
Personally, I’m not mad at this.

what i dont get is how they can censor a naked mannequin. i mean do plastic women now have real tits and c**ts? no! furthermore, waht are they afraid of, taht people will get aroused by a fake woman? she doesnt even have black womens features for cryin out loud. what black woman has flat lips, no hips, no breasts, natually straight hair and a narrow nose? its clearly a “white” figurine with brown paint. if anyone takes this seriously and thinks its racist, theyre crazy as a mad cow.

I’ve “seen” this commercial a number of times for the past few days, but it wasnt until I actually “watched” this commercial last night that I noticed it did sting a little. I don’t think this commercial had the intent of being racist- but it made me wonder how easy of a decision it was to the marketing professionals to expose the black mannequin as opposed to the latin/white ones. It pokes a little fun that you’d wished you could see mannequins have, but at the same time uppercuts and continues to demoralize the “norm” placed on the “hypersexualized” black woman. What would have been the after-thought or giddiness of this commercial if the latin or white mannequin have been exposed?

Actually, I think they are trying to promote something positive……beautiful shapely black woman(even if its plastic), and the fact that a white plastic man thought enough to say “sweet” to also acknowledge her near perfect body. The person snatching the dress appears after the white plastic said that the dresses were going to “fly” out of here.

I don’t see anything racist about it.

The only issue I see is that sex and sexuality is used to grab attention and to promote a product.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GoodgameII/ GoodgameII

The commercial is just a commercial. I didn’t even think about the mannequin being black until I read this article. If we are ever going to get to a point where we’re all equal, we have to eventually begin to believe that the rest of the world isn’t out to get us. Over-analyzing things like this just seems to further promote an inferiority complex that people of other races already feel we have.

I take this as a compliment. Who’s nude body would you rather see, someone with nice boobs and a nice fat ass. Or someone with no boobs, no ass probably flat in the front as well as the back, think about it. Even the white man was trying to get a peek.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sunshyne_defined/ Sunshyne_defined

IDk, whether it’s racist or not, but I do question why they had the black woman lose her clothing. It seems to reinforce the overly sexualized image of the black woman, especially since I don’t remember black people playing a major part in other Old Navy commercials similar to this [correct me if i'm wrong.] Also, her reaction seems to say its no big deal to be viewed naked. You just gotta wonder, though, if its serious, since its about mannequins.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/eazyE/ eazyE

i am offended. being a white male who is very knowledgeable abt the world it troubles me….why is the black woman naked? why not the white woman?. it is subtle but there is a message. people need to see the bigger picture. the creators of the ad knew they could create it and get away with it. white people are clueless when it comes to a real discussion abt race….just like attny gen holder stated “we are a nation of cowards when it comes to race”…..the creators of the ad could have nevergotten away with it if it was a naked white woman……white women are still “protected” in american society. white women are given the benefit of the doubt but black women are not… some of these comments are misguided. there is a racial component to everything here in america….race matters in everything…… and some of the people that have commented seem to have forgotten that or dont wanna understand it or are brainwashed and believe and trust white people. that white people have ur best interest at heart. most do not. just ask the indians that are now on reservations….lol

Damn people give me a break… that commercial is not racist. Yes I am a white woman but my daughter and granddaughter are not…. what damn difference does it make. If the white woman was naked then the black man would have been doing the looking and u would have said something about that…DAMN!!! Yes there is racism out there very much but don’t go looking for it… when there is none. I think they made the black woman naked to show they weren’t racist that she is beautiful and all men want to look at her.. you see the white boy looking huh?????

Man, first Resident Evil 5, now this commercial. Racism is beginning to lose its true meaning when this nonsense is attributed to it. I’m guessing if the mannequin that loss its closed was white, and the black men got his eyes covered, you’d be complaining about that..for the love, it’s never ending.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/two2_cute/ two2_cute

My 2 cents? The commercial is not racist.HOWEVER…,and I’m not too sure if I’m just noticing it or what,Old Navy’s commercials have a tendency to be stereotypical .Why did the black little girl have to say”Go mooom” in that “Shaniqua-tone, instead of “Mom you look nice in that dress” and why did the white girl have to say “Crazy cute” in that valley girl air-head voice? The commercial was supposed to be about how the dresses were so hot that people were yanking them off the mannequins to get them. The joke revolved around how they were dummies with nothing to cover and no way to do so,”..I can’t,your fingers don’t close.” Those are the things I noticed.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Adore_Ford/ Adore_Ford

the way the girl said go mom was kinda sterotypical her tone was like kinda sterotypical but not racists lol

Wow people are really trying to use any obstacle to say something is racist. Its a clothing commerical. IF there the manaquine wasn’t black, and there was no black people in commercials, then you would be saying that its racist because there isn’t any black people. ALSO ADVERSITMENTS AREN”T REAL. THEY USE PERSUASION techniques to make you think about the real situtions. Its not real. Just like movies that are no doc**entaries. Lets not act dense people. I don’t belive everything I see or read about just because a national paper published it. Information can sometimes be inaqurate.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/eazyE/ eazyE

why even go there?? that what i mean….a white woman wouldnt be in that position to begin with.. dont some of u get it??? it didnt need to be created like that in the 1st place……. see what i mean? some people are clueless when it comes to race relations……..lol people need to look deep into stuff and just dont on the surface…lol there are always hidden messages when it comes to race.. its no accident……

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/daishaniqua_nic/ daishaniqua_nic

I think this is more sexual innuendo than needed old navy needed in the commercial…however I can definitely see how it could be argued as race…considering the continued hypersexualization of Black women. Not only from a historical standpoint of slavery but also how sexual images of Black women are contrasted against purity of the White woman. However, im not gonna make a big stink over this commercial either…cause subtle images are around us everyday.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackarchangel1/ blackarchangel1

To subscribe to the ideology that there is more than one (human)RACE is the EPITOME of RACISM…with that said…this commercial smacks of BIGOTRY and OBJECTIFICATION as well as “subliminally” alienating the black mannequin from the clothed white ones and inferring promiscuity and ludeness. Minute daily images and messages such as this are meant to slowly and systematically erode our esteem and promote disdain and “separatism” amongst other ethnicities.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/dheads/ dheads

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I am like wow there are black mannequins in this commercial. At least black is beautiful. Then they take her clothes. Part of me wants to dismiss it as a joke. I guess they are trying to say they are going fast. However I am pretty sure they thought about this commercial. They got people that review these commercials for offensive material and yet they decided to leave that part in. The fact that they could have made several small changes to get the point across without removing her clothes is disappointing. Actually, I would say it is expected. I feel like they made black the center of the commercial only to stripper her down. I think the message is subtle. In my opinion black people need to be hyper-sensitive with how we are portrayed in the media, on TV, in the newspaper. We got an image problem that needs a lot of work. So even if this commercial is harmless, it could be harmful. I wish the media was more sensitive to the plight of the black image.

I am personally not offended by this commercial at all. I laughed when I saw it because the removal of the dress was very unexpected. I was more concerned about the sexual innuendo in the commercial rather than the races that were involved within the commercial. I feel the commercial isn’t that deep.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Luv2prettyblack/ Luv2prettyblack

When I first saw the commercial it kinda raised my eyebrow a little. Okay yes, they have Black mannequins in the commercial, but we as African Americans need to start looking deeper into things. If you pay attention to the other Old Navy ads none of the other mannequins are pictured naked, why would they do one starring the “black folks” with no clothes on??
I’m not big on hollering ‘RACE” everytime there is an issue, I just grew up socially aware because my father used to be an activist in his younger days. There are things called subliminal messages that are flowing through the television, radio and other media outlets that most people are not aware of, but I won’t go deep into that. But we as a race need to educate ourselves more so that we would be able to pinpoint these undercover messages that white America is sending out.

This is racist!! And its soo funny b/c i saw this commercial a couple of times without even thinking about it. Look at the picture– all of the white people are clothed and the black man has no power to protect his wife. Sound familiar? Come on. Why does it have to be the black female to get her clothes pulled off????? This is not just a coincidence. if you ask me, why even do a commercial like this in the first place….

I THINK ALL BLACKS SHOULD DEFINETLY BOYCOTT THEIR STORES AND SEE HOW THEIR STOCK FALLS AND THEY’LL BE CLOSING THEIR DOORS SOON. THAT WAS TOTALLY WRONG AND THEY VIEW THEIR COMMERCIALS BEFORE THEY ARE RELEASED SO THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING. SO YES THAT WAS VERY VERY RACIAL. APOLOGIZING ISN’T ENOUGH BECAUSE IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE. THEIR APOLOGY WONT MEAN ANYTHING BECAUSE BELIEVE ME IT WOULDN’T BE SINCERE.

This is not a racist commercial. I do understand about the struggle our brothers and sisters have gone through, but this is just a commercial. The thing I liked about it was the black mannequin was proud of her body and that the white man found even attractive. When need to stop trying to read so much into things and just move on. I am proud of what we have accomplished so far as a black community and I am trying to teach our young black ladies that it is not all about what everyone thinks you are it is what you think you are will help you live a succesful life.

hands down this commercial is innocently hilarious! i took it as a compliment. white man(nnequin) not being able to take his eyes off of a black woman. she got a lil plastic booty back there too!

if you look closer, there’s what appears to be a Spanish mannequin. so no matter who was naked it seems like someone would have been “offended” and want to raise torches at this commercial…

on the other hand, and this goes to Nazneen, the writer, STOP TRYING TO STIR UP TROUBLE and write about something worthwhile.

I mean this as offensively as possible: Do they have a whole room of a-holes to write these articles, tearing to pieces every bit of pop culture until they find something that they hope can rile us up into believing it’s offensive? First resident evil games & now an Old Navy commercial. An effin Old Navy commercial?!? Uh how’s atmosphere where these writers reside? Here’s an open invite back down to planet EARTH. Get serious. “Mami Jezebel Dichotomy”?? And we’re the idiots? ha, get serious. My God.Would you have a dichotomy if the mannequin were Asian or Latino? Or how about they just take ALL Black people out of the media and people can STFU with the nitpicking. Why do people post things like this article up anyway? We have more important things to be worrying about rather than whether a freaking Old Navy commercial is being racist! I watched it, I didn’t see anything wrong, and even if it WAS being racist, what could we do about it? Petition? Force them to take the commercial off the television? No, we just have to keep it pushing because the truth of the matter is, there are going to be all kinds of racist individuals who just don’t know any better and those are the people that you have to put out of your mind so that YOU can stay focused on whatever it is that you’re trying to achieve. Some (of the very few that actually have a problem with this AD) question, “Why is the Black Woman the only one Nude?”

Well…first of all if everyone was Nude (even though they’re mannequins that would be too risky of an AD to air to the masses)…Second (and far more importantly)…

Would you really be okay with a “White Nude Female Mannequin” and the “Black Male” was trying to sneak a peek?!?!?!

    Would you?

Let’s just not allow Blacks (real or otherwise) to be represented in “any” humorous, provocative or creative commercials…because this “fanning of the flames” is “gettng” (sorry, has been for a long time) ridiculous!!!

If you wanna post a thought provoking question about racism how about the underscored tone the media is portraying as “Barack Obama being the usher of the post racial era” while simultaneously showing video after video of “white cop beating the sh!t out of black male and then blowing his fukkin head off…AND While crying racism over a f**k!n song that Young Jeezy and Jay-Z recorded last september…

Yet we see “video vixens” in music videos shakin everything jesus gave them half naked. so we’re suppose to riot at the fact of this commerical? not all black women are sexually irresponsible, we are not all one thing. and it’s a mannqeuin ! you havent been shopping if you havent ran into a naked mannequin at jcpenny’s or anywhere else for that matter. it’s too many other things goin on in our society that we can talk about, instead of an old navy commerical.

It was a bad judgment call to release this ad. Is it racist, well, covertly, yes. It does nothing more show the devaluation of the black familial structure. The bad thing is that with white mannequins who aren’t married and don’t have kids in the ad, as opposed to the black mannequin family, it would have been more respectful, considerate and understandable to strip on of the paler mannequins. The stripping idea is bad in any capacity though.

The commercial is not racist, had nothing in the world to do with race, period. But if you would have looked a little more at the commercial instead of looking at the race, you would have saw that the black mannequin is not the only WOMAN OF COLOR, the mannequin standing directly next to her would be considered as BLACK also. But you didn’t that did you?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/artsytabby/ artsytabby

wow…racist? really? i think it’s just a commercial. here’s my question…if the mannequin that got naked was white and all the others were black, would it then be racist because the white mannequin was the one with the “lead” part???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Amy_Baby09/ Amy_Baby09

its only racist if you are

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/amy_920/ amy_920

It seems as though parts of this population LOOK for reasons & look for an argument & WANT something to be about race, just to keep the race issue going. If you want it to end, stop jumping on the “Race Card Bandwagon”!! If the mannequin would have been Puerto Rican or Asian would there have been a debate?? ALL people endure racism, not just the black population of this world, so it’s sad for the race card to be used for EVERYTHING & sorry to see it used as an excuse for EVERY situation. And rather than ask if this is offensive to the black population, how about we ask if this is offensive to ALL women, period?? It seems more of a sex issue than race to me, especially since the mannequin next to the naked one is also of color too!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lil_mizz_Lena/ lil_mizz_Lena

i cant really say whether its racist or not, that mannequin happened to be wearing the cutest dress so of course hers would be snatched off, i doubt it was an intentional lets see how we can exploit this black mannequin, i think too often it happens that we turn nothin into somethin it doesnt have to be that way we all just need to chill out

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/marciawhi/ marciawhi

I believe it is a little crude that the black mannequin would be naked, although their is a mannequin standing next to the darker mannequin. The darker mannequin represents something and, before I saw this post everytime I saw the commercial I’m like “what the f**k is this about?” the commercial makes no sense, why would they rip the clothes off one of the mannequins and not all, why would the white man look at the black mannequin when her husbands standing right there. People have to look at all of these images…White “masters” raped black women when their “husbands” were looking, would just come in and have sexual relations with the “wife.” Also darker women are seen as more lascivious than a black women of lighter complexion. Look at the experiement with Huttentot Venus and how they destroyed her body just to experiement on the size of her thighs, labia, and large breast. Sexual racism in African American socities still exist and black women are still being ideolized in negative aspects, this commercial does not help at all with the “step” the future generation is trying to make as a whole.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Bwann26/ Bwann26

This cartoon is completely innapropriate not to mention it is extremely offensive. As an African-American woman, the media often vies us to be sexualized objects who are extremely boistreous. And we are not like that!!!!! Old Navy could have come up with a BETTER ad than that especially a better portrayl of black women! To me, I envision Old Navy to be geared towards fashion for today’s modern families including young children & teens. So knowing this, why run an ad such as this when most of its viewers are young children? What message are we sending about black women when we see a commercial such as this??? You tell me!!!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mem613w/ mem613w

honestly, i won’t lie. i felt offended by simply because…even tho they’re fake…but they had the manniquin exposed nude in front of children and the woman stood there as if she just had on bra and panties or a slip to cover herself. Is this the way they think we parade around our children. I was more concerned about the children more so than the race thing. Children should not be exposed to such vulgarity and it seems like we meaning black and white people are losing our damn minds by the second. This commercial is aired not only at night but during the day when children are wide awake to see that. And for the race thing. I have 2 views. It was kinda racist to have that one black woman exposed around the white people and then again someone would have complained that why do the white woman have to exposed…why they can’t show the black lady sometimes on stuff like. it’s alway 2 sides to a story. old navy seriously needs to come out with a statement to address this issue.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Heart_Mender67/ Heart_Mender67

Why are we the brunt of all that is racist?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sambo_2k1/ sambo_2k1

Once again i must open ur eys to what this is say. Remeber that this is a black married couple and the husband cannot defind his wife from a master undressing her in public on the auction block(see)or stop master from locking at her can’t close his hand (see)to a closed fist to defend her but the worst part on top of that is it show his daughter smile as mommy baggs about her body. if to tell her that this is how back women are treated and it’s cool jst ask mom she is not upset. willie lynich all over the ad. remember we have a black president so don’t be offended or cry racism but if it’s not sexist or child abuse(cause who cares about how the black man is being demascallated) then it just cute look at how the white women laugh it off and the white master(doesn’t turn his head in respect of the black man or woman but basicly say look at that azz lol well that what i see but hey there won’t be no o navy boycott or anything cause i can see the same thing in a video with just black people in it and white people producing it and they just keepin it real lmao

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Idratherbeme/ Idratherbeme

Seriously?! Why is this even a topic of discussion?! I am the first person to be outraged when something overtly racist and malicious is printed in newspaper or aired on t.v. but come on people aren’t we becoming just a tad too sensitive? Can’t a black person be the focus of a harmless joke without us drudging up painful memories of the past that really have no connection to the joke in question? If the white manequin had her clothes ripped off and the black man made a comment, that would have been racist too right?! “Oh they’re trying to say that all black men love white women!” Gimme a break. I mean we want society to move beyond seeing color but we cry racism at the drop of a dime. Now I’m not saying that Old Navy absolutely didn’t have malicious intent with this ad. I don’t know what was in their mind when they created it. But from my point of view they are guilty of not being sensitive to how fast some black people will cry racism at best. If we want people to take our need to talk about race in a meaningful way seriously, we have to stop trying to find racist undertones in EVERYTHING we see that involves a black person. It’s like a person who swears or yells too much…after a while it loses it’s effect. Let’s fight the battles that are worth fighting.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MizZ_FlyYneZz/ MizZ_FlyYneZz

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Keeshy10/ Keeshy10

It’s just a commercial, not such a big deal. If the white mannequin got robbed of its dress, this wouldn’t even be up for discussion… stop being so sensitive and crying racism all the time. I would be among the 1st to have something to say if it was something that was outright racist and degrading… but it’s just a commercial saying that the dresses are flying off the rack and since there weren’t anymore left, some girl took it off the mannequin… calm down

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/true2thetymes/ true2thetymes

it’s funny, even tha white man can’t get enough her sexy blackness. the ripping off of dress proves black ppl can sport anything, and get ppl’s attention, no matter real or plastic. she’s an image of black ppl’s ability to shine no matter the occasion. it’s ironic out of all the female outfits, she made a sell, the other ones were jealous; so laugh at how even in a commercial, our cultural strengths are sought after to sell merchandise.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Hollywood-Publicist/ Hollywood-Publicist

This commercial isn’t racist. I think since Obama took office, America at whole is starting to acknowledge how beautiful black people. Obviously corporate America is starting to put “Black” in their agenda. Plus there’s nothing more gorgeous than a sista, better yet a naked sista. That black mannequin coulda got it. If I see her ass in the club without her husband its going downnnn!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Idratherbeme/ Idratherbeme

p.s. Whoever came up with the ad is a marketing GENIUS!!! It’s attention grabbing enough to get people talking about it but not controversial enough to have a negative impact on their message. GENIUS!!! Well done…I’ll bet sales at Old Navy will increase as a direct result of the discussion this commercial has sparked.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/JodeciDeion/ JodeciDeion

I wouldn’t call it racist, but I agree totally with the article. With moments like Janet and Justin at the Super Bowl. Where we are told we should frown down on them. To do something like this is strange. Why even censor out the mannequin if that is what is really suppose to be.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Heart_Mender67/ Heart_Mender67

Sales increase? Drop in sales, maybe.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/__ash___/ __ash___

i agree. as a mass communications student i spend a lot of time thinking about images of black women in the media. i hadn’t seen this particular commercial, but had seen otheres in the series, and couldn’t figure out exactly why it upset me until now. is it racist? no way. is it offensive? yes.

i wish people would wake up and quit letting the media control their thoughts. just becuase there are positive images of blacks in the media (due in large part to Obama’s presidency), doesn’t mean that there are not still many cultural and racial problems here in america. i think it’s insensitive of Old Navy, but who could blame them? They’re a business, set out to make profit. If everyone’s going to buy into the hype and pretend like there’s no problem with race anymore, why not make some money from it? kudos to them, i guess.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BigBadBat/ BigBadBat

I agree inasmuch as the commercial is not specifically racist; I do expect that opportunity’s previously unavailable will now be open to African-American’s will now be more available. This will most likely be evident in entertainment (TV,movies), but we’ll also see an increase in business in other environments.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/__ash___/ __ash___

and people please read the entire article before you give your oh-so clever opinion… she made it very clear that she did not think the commercial was racist.

slapping “racist” on things is the problem we have now. something can be insensitive or offensive without being racist. you don’t have to hate me to disrect me. pay attention to what’s going on and the messages behind the words.

Oh my goodness, you’ve already looked too much into this. I am a black woman and proud of it, but I have to say that this article just continues to drudge up our past when so many of us just want to move forward. Of course America is not finished with racism, but like you said we’ve all made a step in the right direction. As much as I hate racism, I hate when we can’t let go enough to allow change to happen. Change isn’t change until we change! That goes for all of us, not just white folk! We can’t continue with this disease of “here we go again being picked on…” and expect for change to take place. We complain when there are not people in commercials depicting us; when they are we complain that they don’t look like us; when they do we complain that we’re being ostracisized or made an object in some sort of way. Commercials of this nature made about white people too. As a matter of fact, wait on it, and I bet Old Navy will release one soon. C’mon, ease up and laugh at this silly commercial! Let’s concentrate efforts like your article on when there are real instances of racism happening. TGIF!

Lame, although I must admit, I am a bit flattered that they realize they have to step their propaganda game up lol. “Congratulations BP , we realize its going to take more than just shallow inflamatory remarks to push our point of view down your throats! • http://www.blackplanet.com/jonesnyc/ jonesnyc

I think that’s it just another reminder of how far we haven’t came, And the portrayal of black women is just disresptful, What if that were a white woman or if the roles were reversed, there would be an outcry of womens rights group shouting to have that commercial pull off the air. Subbliminal messages are all around us, Look at Abbercrombie and Fitch, look at their adds, Have you ever seen a Black man in any of their adds and they all have a young white on super large display bourds in the store and on billbourds reminds of something of Nazi germany with Hitler or white power. That’s why I’ve never shopped there. RACIST STORE. But back to the story white boys want black women and believe it or not I think if they could they’d get rid of all us black men and have our women as they’re little sexual toys on the side.

Because the media will keep on pushing the White man/Black woman fad until all of our Black sistas turn on us and sell out to let the Black community to die off. Screw Old navy. Makes me wonder if that was the best idea they came up with to express the notion that the dresses are going fast. not to mention the white man gauking at her like that, but hey she was standing their naked, lots of people would stare and wonder. but i still wonder if there was a better way to get the message out.

Once again it is showing how those white folks view us especially black women for there all out attack on her sexual and that is why she shown naked. Another subliminal suggestion is being made is to have her and by any means necessary including abduction into black market sexual slavery by no other than those need her for reproduction and body parts. This is not a joke, and there black market slavery going on and there is no media coverage on the matter for now because it is only affecting us and black women in particular because our hypersexualization in hip hop videos plays a big part in this because the way our black women are being portray misrepresented to the world at large as nothing but loose, promiscuous females that would do anything to the make some money which include taking off her clothes to get it. At least one thing is being made here also that the black man role of protector of the black woman only physically yet mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and her image to the world at large, too.

I think it is inappropriate. Black doll or white doll. What the heck is going on? They put ANYTHING on TV these days. Everybody’s gone wild. People get closer to God. Block the negativity out of your lives and minds as much as possible. That’s all you can do.

ok ok ok.. this is inappropriate. American idol is inappropriate. I really think the McDonalds Chicken Mcnuggets commercials are more stereotypically racist than this one.

I THINK THAT THIS COMMERICAL IS A BIT TOO MUCH BECAUSE OLD NAVY COULD HAVE COME UP WITH A BETTER WAY TO PROMOTE THE DRESSES.AND WHAT REALLY DOESNT SIT WELL WITH ME IS THAT SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH HER DRESS BEING SNACHED OFF JUST CUZ SHE’S PLASTIC THATS JUST LIKE SAYING SHE SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE WITH IT CUZ SHE IS BLACK. JUST CUZ SHE’S THE ONLY BLACK MANAQUIN SHE HAS TO BE EXPOSED LIKE THAT?!

I’m not so much concerned with the race thing, it’s the fact that is shows during daytime while me and my 9yr old daughter are watching t.v is what concerns me. It just seems way over the top just to promote clothing. They could have did it another way.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Va-Shortie/ Va-Shortie

Oh..my..Goodness people, it is a commercial with mannequins, and some people are actually offended because she got her dress ripped off? ok… if you want to look at it from the ‘black female as a historically sexualized object’ point of view, then really, arent white women splashed all across our tvs and magazines (even invading black men’s publications now) and everywhere else because they are seen as the form to be conformed to?? So when a black woman gets put in the same shine, why get upset? As mentioned in the article, we as black people are a bit set in the way of getting offended in a heartbeat, because true, we’ve been given reason to. But everything can’t keep goin back to racism. We have to be aware that unfortunately, yes its still out there..but I feel we will know something racist when we hear/see it example, Kramer from Seinfeld at that comedy club or Don Imus and his nappy headed hoes statement…just keep ya eyes and ears open and fall back a lil please

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/1suaveguy/ 1suaveguy

I found it to be offensive, but this is the way things are now…and truth be told, if you don’t slow up and point things out now (like this article), most black people don’t even notice offensive things anymore…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MrPCredit/ MrPCredit

It is far too common in our current society to view women, of all races, as sex objects. I think the commercial re-iterates the fact that Black women in America are viewed as no more than a desirable object of lust for white America and once again she is stripped naked and left to hang out all on her on with a subliminally racist underlying message.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ButtaP3can/ ButtaP3can

Please read the entire article before posting your comments. She clearly says she doesn’t find it racist.
My 1st reaction was, “what in the world.” Then I saw it again. It it got me thinking, are we suppose to feel comfortable in our skin? Well if that’s the case why buy the dress? I have learned to really LOOK at TV (movies, commercials, news, etc) and the fact is television along with so many other things can be offensive to “people”. Meaning anyone. This Old Navy commercial is offensive to women, yes. We too often view TV and miss the hidden message. That is that some brilliant team of unknown people who clearly had reason to come up with a skit such as this to promote a line of clothing and to demonstrate the underminding role of a black woman, wife & mother. We should always ask ourselves, “who’s behind this idea, scene or production,” If it had been the white woman being stripped I would’ve still felt disrespected or even the little girls. There are messages in these programs we watch. There are reasons why they chose the black woman over the latino, white, men & children. But Hey, so what, she’s plastic, right?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mzkitten_06/ mzkitten_06

First of I just thought the commercial was kinda funny, just a little over the top for tv. But I think people are just wanting this commercial to be something more then what it really is. Because if it was a white women that this was done to you wouldnt have heard them complaining at all. Like i always say is that black people are sensative and when they feel nothing puts us in a postive light even if nothing is wrong with it we got to complain.

…when the black mannequin not even implies, but blatantly makes a statement to the white mannequin that the jeans make her look like “even she’s” got a booty?…now that’s a bit racist, by definition…I mean, not a big deal to me, but I’m black…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/poetryman03/ poetryman03

Mz Nazneen….its not blatant….but i do wonder why they chose the black mannequin to be the one to have her dress Snatched off of her and the white male manequin can’t seem to take his eyes off of her….but you see real suttle mess like that all time on commercials….i’m glad you brought it up…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Makeluv2thesoul/ Makeluv2thesoul

I think it may have racial overtones….but who cares? There is racism everywhere and there will always be racism….mainly because there will always be races. As long as we have different cultures, backgrounds, religions, socio-economic factors, etc….there will be stereotypes and prejudices brought on by those factors. It doesn’t offend me…it just confirms what we already know…that black women are beautiful and desired by EVERYONE.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ANDROID1957/ ANDROID1957

Hi ! After seeing the commercial I can see your point, while I don’t think its intended as a racial commercial I could see where it can be taken that way. At the very least its bad judgement. I am of the position that as far as racial tolerence goes we still have a long ways to go however I am also aware that the media enjoys making the racial climate in this country twice as bad as it actually is.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ratedWWxxx/ ratedWWxxx

Wow!! who cares..? Thats why things are still the way they are. too many people dont care. No white women, whites period would not blog, complain or lift an eyelash cause they have not walked in our shoes. They have not experienced the actions or the attitudes that SHOULD make this untollerable to all blacks not just black women. We keep our eyes open for racisim and prejudice cause of what we been through and what we still go through. This wasnt made up, we arent paranoid. We were made this way. I would love to walk around in a totally racist and prejudice free society but thats not realistic now is it? Also you wouldnt see anyone snatch the clothes off a white woman on tv.

All I can do is shake my head and say see, that’s why I’m glad I’ve never spent one red cent in that store. Frankly I’ve had my own personal boycott against a large percentage of the “White” establishment stores. I’m very picky where I spend my money. Anyway the Old Navy and the writers, producers, the idiots at that station should face charges from the Federal Communications Commission,(FCC) and have to consider career changes for allowing ignorant mess like that to air as a commercial. A public apology is in order. It’s obvious the writers didn’t consult with the “Black Community” before writing and producing that junk and for Old Navy to sign the contract agreement to run it. WTF were they thinking? Who at Old Navy, or Fox, thought this commercial met or exceeded the standard for broadcasting? Then for that TV network to air that crap during a highly rated show where I’m sure the largest demographic group (all ages)is watching. They’ve expressed their stupidity worldwide. They seem to think it’s okay to run commercials during prime-time of a black woman mannequin being stripped of her clothes. Did they think this was funny? Comedy is really DANGEROUS if your “joke” is NOT funny; especially if you’re trying to generate emotions about a product(s) you actually want people to run out and buy. All parties involved in the process of writing & airing this commercial drastically need mandatory CONSIDERATION TRAINING. The only rating they get from me is their commercial was very inconsiderate: lacking consideration for other people or for consequences. All parties involved in the process took ownership of the money that exchanged hands. Now they can take ownership of the backlash. Maybe in the future they’ll think more clearly when it comes to research and development regarding their target-market. Target market: a group of customers considered likely to buy a particular product or service. If the account execs. etc. were playing darts…guess what? You all missed not just the “Mark/Bullseye.” You missed the ENTIRE board. They’re behavior is so tragic.

Now I can get with the black one bgeing the only one to get her dress pulled off. Then the fact that they had her standing there proud like something disturbing had not just happened. All the other mannequins’ facial expressions changed but hers. I definately did not like that. Then for it to be done in front of her child is just wrong! Old Navy needs to yank that off the air. It gives the impression that black women feel no shame in incidents such as this.

Yes..I feel that this is very insensitive and prejudice. Of course, I do not know if it was intentional, but with the amount of money and time that is spent on an advertising campaign, you would assume that something like this would be test-screened before being aired. What were they thinking?

I don’t think that there were racist intentions in the making of this commercial, but I think there was lack of consideration for the various ways it could be received.

I think the blogger’s perspective about it being a bad choice to have a black woman stripped and being inadequately protected by a black man from a white man makes good sense. However, I do believe in recognizing the difference between someone’s intention and their reception.

sooo … it’s not an off moment. you really do post stuff like this all of the time.

it’s a MANNEQUIN. they didn’t call the mannequin a n*gger b*tch, they didn’t whip or hang it, it wasn’t spat on, and it didn’t get arrested for not letting the white mannequin sit in it’s place.

you try to start sh*t, and that pisses me off. people call me a radical – and that’s ok! i’ll be that. but i don’t go around crying RACIST every chance i get.
hell, you could have said something about an over photoshopped celebrity or model on tv or in a magazine … but you’re talking about a freaking mannequin modeling a $15 dress.

I don’t know about any one else that has viewed this ad, but I felt the same as she, it is highly inappropriate. Why weren’t the other mannequins naked, or shall I say ‘stripped in an instant’, and how come the lewd reactions were stated such as “oohhhh sweet,” with a dog barking (and the dress being pulled off BY A WHITE WOMAN!…..god I hate race issues, why cant people just see that e’re in this s**t together and noone is going anywhere.) From what I recall, dogs aren’t to much into sexually crossing of species. Even if it does at all either it from an instinct of a want to ‘bust that preverbial nut’ or it’s donned on by a person to desperate to even stoop to such a disgracing, yet quite disgusting act such as beastiality. I was bothered by there being races portrayed by mannequins to make it ‘easier for the viewer to except’ when clearly this should’ve been banned, if not looked into in a more defined scope. I myself know that stores dont keep naked mannequins in the store out in the open. the clothing on a mannequin is for ‘display only’ and if the clothes happened to be sold, it is taken down and reclothed with more clothing if not put into storage.(I do commercials and worked retail, so I’m giving this opinion in stride of experience.) Ms. Patel may be tripping on some other things, and I’m mixed with too much s**t to be racist or even racial in any issue, (I see people as people until you prove yourself to be an ass….) but I know that if it were the mannequin portrayed to be white, there would’ve been all types of news cast and negative banter on the ad. Didn’t the other have on the same dress explain to me why only hers was snatched off. I mean seriously think about how easy it has become to except a black woman to be naked in an undignified manner wether it is portrayed in any subject, ‘stripped’ or stripping as opposed to any other race having the dignity to ‘roost’ over such advertisments and things of any manner, keeping hush hush lifstyles of stippers and white ‘video hoes’, but the black woman is idealised and objectified as sex and nothing else, (if not the one they hire for diversity to have someone to look at and call all their buddies over to make bid on who hits it first.’) With saying this I wish everyone can see the retardedness in the ad and come to a conclusion of better judgment on such things, including Ms. Patel, (cuz you do be trippin’ sometimes! lol) and everyone have a wondrful day.

The black manequin was the STAR of the commercial and just had something FUNNY happen to her. There would have been nothing wrong with this commercial if it would have been a white mannequin. There IS nothing wrong with this commercial. If this bothers people so much then commercials such as these should be kept white and neutral!
