In a surprising twist, the Beaver Ridge Elementary School teacher who used examples of slavery in math equations has quit, a Gwinnett County Schools spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

Sloan Roach, the same official who defended the assignment as merely  “bad” questions and had quite a bit to say about the situation when the story made national headlines last Friday, has been given a new song to sing by the school district:

The principal will move forward immediately to fill the vacancy created by this resignation, Roach said in a statement. As this is a personnel matter, the district will not elaborate further.

A teacher created the racially insensitive questions that were used in four classrooms. After an unexpected uproar from parents and activists in the community, the district decided to finally do their job and conduct an investigation that concluded Thursday.

The racist nature of the questions were shocking to some, because 88 percent of students at Beaver Ridge are either Black or Hispanic. The school also has a multicultural staff that reflects their student body, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

We are working to ensure that this does not happen again, said Beaver Ridge Principal Jose DeJesus on the school’s website.

Even though public school textbooks go through extensive review, it seems as if the more mundane task of checking behind teachers for “cultural sensitivity” often gets lost in the shuffle of the day.

Calvine Rollins, president of the Georgia Association of Educators, says that teachers are under a lot of pressure and it’s easy for them to miss things:

Teachers are under the gun to do a whole lot. Sometimes, assignments get pushed out without a glance.

The AJC reports that this is not the first time that racially tinged questions have made their way into Georgia’s curriculum.

Last school year, a third-grade teacher at Chesney Elementary in Gwinnett assigned a reading packet that contained the story “What Is an Illegal Alien?” It had not been reviewed first.

In September, Cobb County students were asked to write about dress codes and read a fictional two-page letter written by a 20-year-old Saudi Arabian woman who spoke approvingly of her fiance’s multiple wives and the law of Sharia.”

Neither of these assignments had undergone review.

While Rollins hypothesizes that teachers are “under the gun,” that does not suffice as an explanation for the blatant disregard shown by four so-called “educators” in distributing insensitive racial information to 8-year-olds devoid of any context or frame of reference.

How callous is it to throw out numbers without giving voice to the the enormity of the subjugation that African slaves faced? How absolutely heinous is it to have children count beatings in their head, diminishing African people to mere human chattel in 2012?

If we’re going to talk about math, let’s talk about all the wealth that was stolen from future generations of the African-American community during slavery, where every back-breaking second, minute, and hour of work translated into profits for white America while our families were beaten, murdered, raped, and torn apart.

If African Americans were allowed to accumulate wealth during slavery, would we still face the highest levels of poverty and unemployment in the country? Why aren’t our future leaders examining that mathematical equation?

While it is a good thing that the teacher resigned, it is unfortunate that he or she was allowed to do so anonymously, with their dignity intact.

Clearly, they were not concerned with the dignity of the students entrusted to their care.

The office staff at Beaver Ridge Elementary were not authorized to answer any questions concerning this matter when contacted by NewsOne, nor were they able to confirm the fate of the three other teachers that used the questions. NewsOne also left a message for Spokesperson Sloan Roach, who had not returned our call by press time.

Gotta love the internet…We amplify drama so quickly that there are immediate resolutions…or, is that resignations.

  • One Man Posse

With the internet we hear about things like this in days rather than years. Eventually black people are going to be exposed to so many stories like this that they won’t be able to stick their head in the sand. Once enough black people understand what the problem is we will be able to come up with a solution. Not enough black people think there is a problem. They believe that these are just isolated events.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/2Queens11434/ 2Queens11434

Yeah, all of a sudden beat downs are associated with blacks.

The teacher should be named. A sociopath like this should not be allowed to be anonymous

That teacher is a product of an education that leaned towards teaching that Slavery wasn’t anything but just another small thing, that happened in America so not to worry,it has no residue effect on any of you so don’t feel bad.

I sorry, but I think most people have it wrong on this. This was probably a cross-curricular lesson on the The Civil War and Slavery. Each teacher, regardless of the subject matter they teach, must incorporate this theme in the lesson so that students are better able to connect to the lesson and retain what they learn. This method is preferred over the English teacher reading a book on slavery, but the history teacher is teaching about world history. The science and math teachers also find a way to include the theme.

Also the fact that this teacher quit—was not fired, and the so called other four or three teachers are still teaching, further lets me know this is the case. And finally, if the school is made up of as many minority students, and the staff is diverse as well, I do NOT think four teachers would have agreed or had the guts to disperse racist material in class.

I appreciate the responses that have been made, but let’s now channel that energy and be active about teaching our children about African American history by volunteering to tutor or mentor students at your local school. Signed, a teacher

Here’s a real like math problem. How many paychecks can an out of work math teacher miss before, they have to pick oranges like a slave?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shbkyn/ shbkyn

Oh no, all these teachers, and principal, need to go! I read on HP, it was a black who made the worksheets. Now, it is no way in heck this person should be teaching black children, and all of them need to go, I am talking about the principal as well. Material that is made up by teachers, to be presented to the students, wasn’t screened? That person, need to head the pack, right out the schoolhouse door. If it was a black person, obviously, they see themselves as a slave. If I lived there, I would occupy the school board until they are all gone. Nobody wants to hear these watered down excuses. Here is a good example, of who is dumbing down Americans. Old school teachers and principals, your time is up. I am running around here in my racist state, trying to get African Centered Curriculum in a few Charter Schools, this kind of stuff make you feel bad. Certainly, we need to learn and know the history of slavery, but they cannot present it like that, making it seem like slavery was okay They have been getting away with it, every since we started going to school, in the curriiculum, it is presented as if it wasn’t so bad, just a little over-worked, and a few lashes. Slavery was the greatest Human Rights Violation ever in the history of the world. Blacks are still suffering.

Factoring in the pay most teachers make, I’d say about three paychecks.

ummm. I agree with most of your post. But just so you know, the principle does not review the teachers worksheets. They may come by the class from time to time to have a “look in” or they will ask for lesson plans sometimes, but for the most part, a teacher is pretty much left alone to teach in the manor that he or she sees fit. So this type of foolishness could easily happen without anyone in administration knowing about it.

Right. I don’t care if the person who made these worksheets is black—we all know that there are some ignorant and self-loathing black folks walking this earth, so they don’t get an exception. Hell, they ought to get an ass-whipping.

Then any lessons that must incorporate certain themes or historical points SHOULD BE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN examined for levels of dumb-assedness like this (and yes, I made up that word).

The teacher may have quit, but it could have been a forced resignation…so that to me doesn’t say much at this time since I don’t know all the details of his or her quitting. However, who in the hell would think to incorporate slavery into math without understanding the implications?? Crazy!

  • Anonymous

If those questions had been about the Holocaust the whole administration would have been fired.

    Oh, HALE No!

There’ s no explanation for this other then the obvious!! There’s no need trying to justify it or ‘smooth’ over what has been done. Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles can see this wasn’t right!! Those (Educated / College grad) ‘TEACHERS’ knew good & darn well what they were sending home with those kids! Probably thinking that no parent would notice or that they wouldn’t even care! Probably placed monetary bets on when the ‘back lash’ from the homework assignment would be felt or if any at all!! This really stinks! I live in Ohio and can smell it all the way over here! This type of shyt happens every day!! THEY say little comments ‘thinking’ that you will not catch on… or THEY’ll make reference to you or your belongings and associate it with some type of ‘jungle’ comment… I’m sorry yawl, I’m venting right now cuz I’ve seen this happen way too many times and then had it explained as if it’s nothing!! or not THAT serious. Somebody call the NAACP, Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson!! or better yet, President Obama! This school would be a good place to start a movement if you ask me! It’s bad enough that being an ADULT in 2012, we STILL have to face this shyt, now they are ((( OPENLY ))) attacking our kids with this mess!! Thank GOD for Terrance Barnett !! KUDOS to you my brutha!! Had it been me? and I saw that homework assignment? (I mean this figuratively) There would be smoke in the city tonight!! talk about Occupy Wall Street? It would be more like Occupy “cross-curricular activity” with a can of whoop AZZ!! … and when I say ‘Whoop AZZ” I say that to mean, a report to the Board of Education or HR. I’ll be sure to keep tabs on this story… Would LOVE to see how it unfolds. I can only HOPE at this time that more of those parents would take this as far as it will go!! and not just let it fizzle out. In my opinion, it’s not a ‘Gwinnett County’ thing, it’s NATION wide!!!

    Enough is ENOUGH!!

What do you think is being implied?? And, is it just ok to discuss slavery in History and math. The last I checked, economics (math) played a huge role in chattel slavery?

  • http://twitter.com/barberguy72 barberguy72

The issue of our failing African American children is less about math & science, but more about history/social studies. This is confirmed by dedicating one month of the year to Africans contribution to society. Slavery was more about 18th, 19thcentury economics “means or factors of production.” This process is called the “dialectic process” which is an algebraic formula designed to keep African Americans enslaved mentally centuries beyond, old tactics had run its course. Whether you accept it or not, the job market and prisons are a form of slavery serving the same purpose as 19th century philosophy. The education industry is the training fields. Our education system grooms African American children for the job market and prisons, they don’t educate. Most of African American children drop out of school or graduate into poverty; it’s by design. They are trained, even in most colleges, how to produce for others rather than creating for themselves. If a teacher attempts to educate, then there’s a problem. Consciousness is raised with truth, not lies and deception. If we are honest with our children economically, the past parallels with 21st century tactics. It’s designed to keep African Americans on bottom being a servant for the oppressor. As a result, African Americans fight harder to preserve someone else’s culture instead of their own. It’s a reason the teacher wasn’t fired, their intentions weren’t brought into question, only their judgment. Charter schools are doing the same thing, their independent, allowing them to teach. If African American children were actually taught their story, math and science would be a breeze; their ancestors are responsible for the discovery of both. Africans were the first civilization; they are a people of order not confusion. African Americans have been convinced otherwise. My wife is a special Ed and science teacher. She isn’t really allowed to teach, but she puts forth her best effort by showing compassion, having their best interest at heart. Every other culture can teach its history, it’s un-American for African Americans to teach their story. Their purpose is to keep African Americans disconnected from Africa which eventually leads to the demise of African American and Africans abroad. Once African Americans have combined their training with true African principles, all African descendants will overcome. First, African Americans must quit fighting themselves and denying the truth. Trust me; media creates more psychological damage to our children. History is harsh, but so are the conditions of Africans and African Americans. Part of the reason for our conditions is that every generation has progressed further from its truth, resorting more to slave training. Every generation is responsible, which explains the trouble of African American youth; Santa Claus and Call of Duty 3 are a bigger problem than the teacher. The word slavery restricts ones optimism. The term “economics” gives you a broader sense of poor people’s role in society’s past, present, and future. Economics has several stratifications, starting with socio-economics.

He wanted to quit but with his logic, this was his only way out. That’s how I see this. No one in their right mind would do this an expect people to be okay with it.

If Billy-Jo slept with his four daughters, and they each bore him two children, how many kids would Billy-Jo have? Bonus question: What is the collective average of the distance between the eyes of each enbread child?—lololol…This question is not timed…

I just don’t think, as evidenced by this type of math lesson, that slavery should be discussed in this manner–not in a MATH class!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/forsakemenot/ forsakemenot

booo…Slavery is not a “theme” to be incorporated into a lesson. Slavery is the epitome of the atrocities of Mankind. Can we incorporate sex-ed and condoms into an English or Math Assignment? “Question: If Tanya(at 14) was raped, molested and beat four times a day, then…” what kind of logic is that? Is it all that Black History is known for in America, “Slavery”? Is that the only “lessons” we have to teach our youth about blacks? No one talks about Africa anymore or Egypt or Kush. Black are just people that used to be slaves right? This is not the first failure of the Education System for blacks. It wont be the last. We have seen the product of these so-called educators for some time know. Geez! Just say n****r and get it over with…

Lol,I agree. But, I guess I am always a bit rattled when I see outrage about what’s going on in schools, but that outrage does not shed light or offer solutions to the real problems that plague our schools. The negative depictions and misinformation, is only the tip of the iceberg. The real problems lie with the lack of motivation to learn and standardized education that values quantity (high test scores) over quality (relevant, useful lessons). In comparison to the injustice and oppression I have seen in schools, this controversy make me yawn.

  • Anonymous

Here is the solution to THIS particular problem: don’t have lessons like this. Second solution: monitor curriculum that is outside the standard guidelines. thirdly, teach the teacher.

Sorry that this controversy makes you yawn. You sound like you’ve become jaded! :(
