A black female patientA recent study shows that when suffering from stroke- like symptoms, African Americans are more likely to call a friend instead of 911.

Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington D.C. interviewed 100 acute stroke patients or those who accompanied them to the hospital and found that 75 percent said they called someone else first instead of 911 when they realized something was wrong.   Even more reported they waited a significant amount of time before seeking any medical attention.

The Washington Post reports:

Although stroke patients were asked whether concerns about the District’s emergency medical response system was a reason for not calling 911, [Amie Hsia, medical director at the Washington Hospital Stroke Center], said it was not a primary reason people gave. That concern surfaced in later interviews with focus groups, where respondents also spoke of fear that ambulances might not find their way to a particular neighborhood quickly enough, embarrassment if an ambulance showed up and concern about the cost of emergency services, she said.

According to the American Stroke Association someone in the United States is having a stroke every 40 seconds.  It is the third-leading cause of death in the United States.

In the United States, the rate of first strokes in African Americans is almost double that of whites, researchers say, because of higher incidences of risk factors such as high blood pressure and obesity. And strokes tend to occur earlier in life for African Americans. Studies have also shown that fewer blacks than whites receive a treatment that breaks up the blood clot in the brain causing the stroke, in part because blacks are not getting to the hospital in time.

The Congressional Black Caucus and American Heart Association announced on Thursday they would be joining together in a campaign to inspire people to make healthier choices and to educate people on best practices if they or someone they know is having a stroke.

My mom did the same when she had her stroke 3 years ago and the paramedics got to her 20 minutes later and my we got there 10 minutes before them. She’s alive and well, but it was a shock that she was living a healthy life, eating right and exercising AND the paramedics were late!

medics don’t always respond timely in the neighborhoods where people of color live (for various reasons, some of which are the direct result of inappropriate EMS usage, increased strain on staff due to higher crime, lower budgets, and so forth and so on). …

…it’s a “safer” bet for some to call their friend, and get to and ER in a predictable (but perhaps longer) time-frame.

yeah I can see why that is. I don’t think many quickly think of cost, when they’re dying, since many don’t care about cost of things, while they’re living. I think it’s the whole culture of 991 being a joke in some area. Who really trusts the medics will come on time, to the hood? White people know they’ll be right on by quickly, though, they have that confidence.

I don’t know why we, African Americans, are always highlighted in anything that has to do with something bad; but if an article talks about morbid obesity, then black people suffer from it more than any other race on the planet. The reason why we have higher rates of strokes is because of our high fat high sodium high calorie diets. So many of us are shaped like eggs with our stomachs hanging over our belt buckles, and this has become the norm.

It’s really no earthly way to sugarcoat the morbid obesity in America. When a car is about to slam into a friend, you don’t whisper “Get out of the way.” You scream at the top of your lungs for your friend to get out of the way. I’m screaming now because I’m seeing black people that cannot fit into the extra large seats at the movie theaters; they cannot comfortably walk up a flight of stairs. I’m seeing teenagers that have to p***k their fingers to test their blood sugar. I never thought I’d see the day where so many young black kids would have type 2 diabetes, but that day is today.

Over the weekend, I had to go to Walmart to get some food items for Mother’s Day. My wife wanted to make some Spinach Dip that’s about 400 calories per serving, but I had already decided that I wouldn’t be eating any of it. Her family loves the stuff, but it’s too much sodium in it for my blood, and I’m a man that knows his limits. My mother suffers from high blood pressure, along with two of my brothers, so I decided to take action early in life, and limit the amount of sodium I eat per day. I do partake of junk food every now and again, but I was already going to have a hot-link, hamburger, and some potato salad that was full of sodium, so I decided that the spinach dip was too much.

When I walked through the front door of the Walmart, a younger African American male stood next to the entranceway, and he looked like he weighed around 350 pounds. After about thirty minutes in the store, I realized that every African American person that I saw had a pear shaped frame, a look that signified a bad diet with little physical activity. Let’s not just make this into an African American problem because the white people were just as fat, and I live in a predominantly white part of town. At the end of the day, the majority of people will say, my obesity is my problem not your problem, and that’s true except for the simple fact that we teach obesity to our kids, and they teach it to their kids, and over time obesity can hinder us from having kids. Your obesity will shorten your life and bankrupt our country. Our health care system cannot sustain itself at the rate we’re going. There isn’t a diet plan or exercise routine that can curve America’s obesity problem. It’s much more deeper than that. The average male only needs 1800 calories a day to live while the average female only needs 1300 calories a day to live, but it takes a lot of hard work to train your mind and body to consume so little when it’s used to eating so much. Good luck.
