I have Asthma and I dont have insurance because I was cut off when I was 18 years old. I had a back up plan because I know how these things work and I stay on top of my game because I can afford to pay. However, I know that some people arent as bless to afford the meds. Its 200 for a disc, over 1,000 for the equipment every year (that includes if it breaks and hads to be replaced) and depends on inhalers its starts from 150 on up. So dont ride on the mother and make it seem like she was in the wrong for not trying hard enough. She did all what she could think of…and that free clinic..they will only cover part of the meds depending on the cost and the type. If he was on the simple meds, she might have not known that there was a thing about a free clinic.

I know how that is. because they have done it to me.i have two boys ages 1 and 5 both of them have asthma.For the past 5 months i have had to take them to the ER just to get an inhaler in my hand. because I was turned down at walgreens.

Two of my kids have asthma and so do I. We went a month without medical insurance and let me tell you, I was NEVER more than 10 minutes away from a Urgent Care or ER. People thought I was crazy but I don’t play with me or my kids health, so we stayed in familiar territory at all times. And yes, she could have gone to a free clinic or county facility (I’m not sure how Denver does it but there should be something). There are even drug companies now that will give you medications for free if you can’t afford them. The sad thing is…..all of this was out there and his mother just didn’t know about it.

This story is very sad and I totally sympathize with the family, but let’s be honest, no one in this country gets a break. Many people have been allowed to come to this country but have not learned its ways because they have allowed the government to lull them into a false sense of security. Terrible story! I have insurance and my co-pays are high enough. My place of employment decided to switch companies and the one we’re with now is horrible also! I know someone who pays a co-pay of $658 for a single perscription that he has to have for seizures! Healthcare needs to change!

I am thankful that I have worked my way out of depending on the state. I remember when I did though. There were a few times I had to take off work and go to DHS and refuse to leave until something was done. I wasn’t hateful or rude but when it comes to my boys, I will do whatever. Sometimes you have to sit on those people and when you do they will make the phone calls to ensure you get what you need just so they don’t have to deal with you anymore. My prayers go out to this poor family, especially that mother.

This is not the first time this has happened. I live in Michigan and my foster brother died in my mother’s arms from a severe asthma attack. Medicaid refused to cover the combination of medication and his inhaler even though that was the only thing that worked for him. Something needs to be done to keep this from happening.

That’s real F-Up when kids can’t get care but let’s spend a billion on some fuking plane. Get your own biz people and keep yourself and family covered. Its a lot easy than most people think.

The State of Colorado did not error none whatsoever, they knew exactly what they were doing and someone within the confines of this mess denied this child this because of the Illness and they know it.

How long does it take for an error to be corrected, they knew what they were doing, now this Family should hire attorneys to represent them and seek redress for this mess.

Now for those who do not know this, this happens all the time, and also this type of system places people on this when they are affluent enough to afford Health Insurance without a problem.

I will stand on my head in HELL, if I am wrong about this, but someone within this system in the STATE OF COLORADO, and close to this case pull the coverage on this child. I have seen this happen too many times, but when you back them in a corner, this is when you find the truth.

If anybody is really reading this, get someone with real authority to investigate this starting with the CASE Worker, and move up the ladder, I will bet you a dime to a dozen that someone familiar with this case had something to do with the coverage being terminated.

All of the children on my caseloads had Medicaid and whenever it was time to renew it, we could see it in the system or in their file while we were updating it and even though the parents receive letters outlining when they are scheduled to come in and handle that, we would tell them what to do to get that done or help them do it despite other work we had to do every day. That was never an exception, especially since most families could and do easily qualify for that and other services to ensure that the medical, nutritional, and developmental needs of their children are being met. News like this makes the people who actually do their job look bad and have to tripple check their work and the work of others so that the State doesn’t have to come in and review all workers and their files…

If I stand on a corner handing out sandwiches and you don’t get one, are you going to sue me if your child dies of starvation? The problem is dependency. Instead of demanding free health care from the government, we should be demanding fair trade (not merely from outside sources but American products as well) and a repeal on tax shelters for corporations that ship jobs overseas. I can not beleive that Nubian just said that. I am so shocked that you would look at a life loss and blame it on the person who took the time and persistance to obtain coverage for a child that suffers. How could you say that it is her fault for her child not getting medicine to continue his beautiful life. IT IS THIER FAULT! Having worked in the Medicaid system myself I have faught for people who do not appear to need the help but the papers say other wise. If she was able to afford the medicine wether she not pay a bill or not then she would not be on medicaid DUH! As well as even if you are employed FYI you are still eligible for medicaid so long as you fall within the proverty level. If not you pay a premium amount.

As far as taking care of her responsibilites.. you know what that child is my responsibilty as well if I was in that state because my taxes would pay to make sure that child is taken care of. Let ask your parents how hard it was to take care of you every day before you left home. And how will it be when and if you have children on your own. Lets see if your are married and and have children and God forbid your partner either leaves or is not alive anymore and you cant hold job down and you need help what then?

As far as not costing as much as rent. There is not just one medicine that he would have to take. there will be multiple as well as you will have to see the doctor before you can get a Rx many times to asses your progress or lack of if any. So if he has no insurance then no visit no visit no Rx not Rx not meds NO MEDS NO SURVIVE!

What’s even more sad, is the fact that we live in a country where doctors would rather watch a little child die because his medicine is not covered, versus just giving him the medication that is going to save his life and then charging his mother or Medicaid to pay it later. Although I am so proud to even know that there are some VERY FEW doctors that are giving up their big practices to help those who have no insurance as well as that time where there were those who were still residents that went to the dome to help those with out insurance but they ran out of supplies and had to end it.. but that was great!

This woman had no insurance for this child for 5 months KNOWING here son had life threatening asthma. I know that w/ asthma there are several meds that need to be taken but in 5 months, in the United States there is no reason why she could not ATLEAST get the medicine that her son needed in case of a severe attack. COME ON!!! This woman was being lazy!!! This is asthma. She has no excuse. This question is for everyone reading this…….Now if you know your child has life threatening asthma, your medicaid is cut off, you’re going to sit there and wait for medicaid to pay??? Or are you going to make moves and get your child the medicine your child needs to LIVE?

Withing 5 months that child would have died… So of course she did something. She got meds from somewhere but the ongoing attention that the child needed was not received. As far as the ER you wont get that much help in there patch it up and you are out. NOW the Government also knew that her child had a life threating condition and umm they are the ones who put the “approval” in the system which can take 24 hours to update in the system and be pulled up anywhere. They did not keep up with their end and she called and called. IF she needs the help she should get it! There are some case workers who drop the ball and here is the result. The doctors knew and the caseworkers knew!

Itwas not her fault alone or at all as a matter of fact it is the system that failed.

There is no excuse and the blame is on the government.
AS far as the longevity of the medicine to be taken it can go on for even longer depending on your living conditions as well as stress.

I always say that there are many levels to a story so we do not know the whole story but by what im seeing it is not her fault.It is the same with the boy who died because of a tooth ache that did not get attention due to not having insurance.

And take a look at her children she was far from being lazy she takes care of those children as best as possible you can see that in the picture of the little boy as well as his sister. I dont care i am happy that my taxes are going to people who are struggling.

It would had been plain common sense to use to make this happen for
the child to receive medication until the error in paperwork cleared.
Matter the reason the mother didn’t or couldn’t come to the plate in this,
the immediate attention of the kid was needed,and take care of the menance
of the thing later. 5 months was enough for everybody to be involved and even pass a donation basket around….no excuse….and for the doctor’s
to know a medication for inflamatory of lungs was needed….they should
had kept that report to thier self…Doctor’s have access to even,medicine
samples to had helped the child in emergency. As a parent we defnitly have
to kick ass through doors for help,but on the behalf of “professionals”
a bit of humanitarian comapassion and social work come along with the
title they walk around with. The so-called friendly neighbrhood pharmacy
could had got involved too.

Nubian_Honey_Kiss…Its apparant that YOU’VE never had to purchase any medicine before. A bottle of 20 quality aspirin will run you $8 nowadays. How do you know the medicine he needed didn’t cost as much as her rent? What if he need a metered inhaler which can cost upward of $200 bucks? And I hear the prices of the medicine itself is astronomical! So maybe the medicines HE needed WERE the price of rent. And even if they weren’t, again, how can YOU say she could have afford it? Its not like you have the option of “being short on the rent”. Don’t pay $20 of your rent next month and see if your landlord just “lets it go” cause your son has asthma.

This woman was being LAZY? So are the other millions of unemployed americans who have been LAID OFF also lazy? Nevermind that most companies are DOWNSIZING. Those 10,000 employees at Verizon that are also being laid off SURELY are the laziest of them all!

Did you even READ the article? The way you responded, you’d think old girl was driving an Escalade and just didnt WANT to buy the medicine cause the felt the state should pay for it. There’s a such thing as “just not having the means to do anything about it.” Its all over American. Its called “poverty.” Not everyone uses silk trash bags like you.

You know, to all those who DON’T live in Colorado and ARE NOT on Medicaid- don’t talk about how someone is “lazy’ or ” why not pawn something” until you can understand what the drama with Colorado is. i live in Colorado and my daughter and I are both on Medicaid. I have a job, I have an education and I take care of my family the best way i can with what little i am given. Unless you are in the Military, or retired or married to military, medical coverage is NOT guaranteed. My daughter and I have been kicked off a few times for reasons such as my income is too much or my daughter’s income is too much…she’s 6! where is she working and why she ain’t payin any bills!
So before you speak, understand. And when that time comes for you to understand, you are on the phone leaving a message for your case worker, for the 12th time, asking why he hasn’t called back and why do you not have medical coverage.

I have a 12 year old with Juvinile diabetes. And for the 2 kinds of insulin she takes its 107.00 per bottle. I also have 2 other children-I work 2 jobs. And I still have to depend on medicaid. The way the the case workers shift the cases around, Its Crazy! Ive had to her Doctor call cause they said she was using to much Insulin. How is that possable? Ive been through it all. And it can drain a person. So unless you lived it, dont put that mother down. Try helping those mothers get better results!!!! I say a prayer for that women, that cant bring her son back… Cause NO ONE CARED ABOUT WHAT HAPPEN TO HER SON!!!! Also just a word of advise. Me, I found going through a little neighborhood Pharmacy was alot better then a Walgreens or CVS. More personal and caring. Theyeven bent the rules here and thier to make sure my baby was ok!

I am so sadden by this, but I know just what his mother was going thru. My child who is now an adult has has asthma all her life. You cant even begin to count the cost, not only in your and your child’s emotional health, but financially, maybe even your job if you dont have someone who can stay with them in the hospital and the list goes on and on and on. personally speaking people are cowards, if you represent that particular agency, stand up and assure the provider of something. People are so afraid to make a common sense judgement these days that they will let your love one die before they will do what’s right. Like my daddy use to say “use some common judgement, which meant use some common sense.

This story brought tears to my eyes. It is sad that in America our kids are allowed to suffer and die because healthcare isnt available to them. His parents must hurt a bit more knowing that their son died and he didnt have to. He wasnt in a car accident or got hit riding his bike, his death was absolutely preventable and that is saddest thing.

This is a damn shame, more proof we need healthcare reform. Personally if my child has a life threatening disease I would sell my body if I needed to, in order to afford their prescriptions.

Yeah sorry, but I kind of agree with Nubian_Honey_Kiss. Where was his father? Even on the commercials for the drug comapanies they say if you need help paying for prescriptions they are also willing to help. There are free clinics and churches that can help as well. Was it totally the parents fault their son died? No, but this is a lesson to other parents that you can’t sit there and twiddle your thumbs and wait for help to come to you.

Even more reason to pass this healthcare bill…Our country is really SAD, we use RACE n GENDER to justify everything.

It is not the governments job to take care of people. Contrary to what many people believe.

The government is too inefficient, too big to catch all cases and cannot generate that cash flow needed to take care of everyone that needs its support.

Like other governments that have tried to do this, and failed. Such as NAZI Germany with Hitler and USSR with Stalin…

Ultimately weeding out the weak that drag down the government become the option that is used to make the program work.

It is very noble, but no matter how much everyone on here want the government to do this, it cannot.

Rarely do I choose to respond to hurtful and insensitve messages but I decided to respond to yours because I want you to really THINK the next time you chose to hurt a grieving mother, who has lost a YOUNG CHILD, especially without having all of the facts. I guess it really caught my eye that you profess to be a part of the medical community. Now I wonder if you truly are. I am really trying to refrain from being as judgmental as you, but when I saw your profile I wondered how you can be part of the medical community, yet not realize that an asthmatic child who died from the disease was likely on MANY different, expensive medicines. I wondered how you missed the fact that he indeed had his rescue meds but his condition reqiuired that he ALSO take expensive daily medications. You asked how she could not “at least” get the medicaiton he needed for a severe asthma attack. Honey, SHE DID!!! She HAD THE MEDS FOR SEVERE ASTHMA ATTACKS.Did you miss that part of the story? If you are in the medical field then you know that there are MANY other factors involved that would result in an asthma attack taking the life of a child. ANY asthma can be life-threatening – (didn’t you know that?)She was NOT, (as you indicated) “sitting there and waiting.” SHE WAS A WORKING MOTHER. Her salary was barely enough to pay for rent and bills. Apparently she decided that she better at least keep a roof over her children. She went to agency after agency, and pharmacy after pharmacy. She went to the mayor. She went to her Congressmen. She went to Human Services and was sent away. (No one would talk to her except to tell her she had to call the Medicaid hotline. Guess what? The all said that the problem should be solved in a week. When it became apparent that the system was not getting fixed, caring people chipped in to buy some of the medications. But I’m sure you know that if your asthma meds are interuppted for even a few weeks that your system is weakened until you get back on the dailys. He didn’t go without his daily meds for “5 months” as you erroneously stated in your post. Even though he was back on the dailys the interruption proved to be too much and he didn’t recover. He had asthma for 9 years. I’m sure he probably had a few interruptions before. And didn’t die. And I will let you in on a little secret. A mother NEVER expects her child to die. Especially if (as was the case of this child) he is laughing and playing just days before. And he is Back on his medicine as this child was (remember he got samples from the ER. With asthma (as you should know) thiings can change VERY quickly.

Nubian, I hope that you have the compassion to think before you chastise another mother and blame her for the death of HER CHILD. I know this mother personally. I don’t know of any other mother who would have done all of the things that she did to try to help her child. Nobody believed her because her child “didn’t look that sick.”

Somehow, I doubt if this note will make ANY difference in the hardness of your seemingly unfeeling heart. But you should truly hang your head in shame for having bashed a mother who has JUST LOST A CHILD. Especially a Black mother, because you look (and I know looks are deceiving) like someone who would know about many of the roadblocks in the Black Community. This mother is trying very hard to get through all of the horrible comments and just focus on that fact that she knows that she did EVERYTHING that she could. Her simple wish is to bring to light the seriousness of asthma so that next time people are taken seriously when they need PREVENTATIVE meds, and to impress upon Colorado that people with disabilities or on medicaid or medicare need a better system to quickly remedy the situation when someone counts on their medical insurance to reflect their (true) eligibility.
