As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, INC. and a dedicated soror to my bruhs of A PHI A I regret that one bad apple has spoiled the bunch. People going through hazing just to belong to something like a group has always bothered me. Its like people have low self esteem and need for others to make them feel welcome, liked, and accepted. I mean to people allow themselves to be abused in some fashion, cross over, then say…now i feel special, i belong? Depressing cause you must’ve had issues from the start. Peer pressure on the collegiate level. This story is a very sad story but unfortunately for many individuals who have attended colleges and universities all across America this story is not unheard of. Why does any fraternity or sorority feel the need to practice such behavior? I want it to be known that we should not judge every fraternity or sorority chapter strictly based off of another fraternity or sorority chapter’s behavior. Why should anyone have to undergo abuse in order to prove themselves worthy of being apart of an organization that is ridiculous. Let alone deal with humiliation and abuse. I think the president made a wise and couragoues decision when addressing the incident to all Alpha Phi Alpha chapters across America. Unfortunately when an incident such as this occurs every chapter of A Phi A is being scrutinized for their practices. I decided to not be apart of any sorority because it was not for me but if an individual chooses to be apart of a fraternity or sorority they must know that hazing of any kind should not be tolerated. I am sure these organizations were not built or created for the purpose of abuse and humiliation but to bring people together who are in agreeance with a common motto what ever that may be for example: community and education.

Bottom line, ask ANY older member (50+ years of age) the signifcance of the rituals of ANY Black Greek organization(although they wont tell you what they actually were) and how some mental and/or physical challenges were presented to initiates (or pledgess), and they will inform you as to how they were relevant to what was being taught to them was PERTINENT to their understanding of not only the fraternity/sorority, but the African American culture and struggle as a whole.

I am currently going to a black university and this kind of story is not unusual unforunately.I know members of Alpha and supporters of the black fraterntity/sorority experience and this an embarassment to everyone in involved nationwide.I’m glad on one hand, that the President of Alpha Phi Alpha has halted intake processes so no further situations can occur and could lead to further controversy. But on the other hand, I feel sorry for the intakes who may be in limbo due to the fact of this ruling. With past situautions involving hazing still fresh in peoples in minds, this is a reminder that this issue has to be resolved so that no further embarassment of any organization will be inflicted due to some of their members acting irresponsibly.

I agree MsBossLady. As a Black Greek also, I am disappointed and frustrated that our Greek Organizations still have to “Haze” our future brothers and sisters. I get so mad when the bruhs tell Interests that “We dont haze here at such and such we just pledge hard.” That’s there way of getting by by saying they pledge and not haze when in reality its hazing that’s actually taking place. I’ve seen so many potential great brothers drop from the process due to the hostile activities that take place. At the end of the day fraternities want respect from other fraternities so that accusations of SKATING and PAPER don’t surface. That is basically what it is and has come down to. I just hope all Black Greek organizations straighten up sooner or later.

Here are the facts:
1. We Black Greeks, particularly the Divine 9, have to be more accountable for our actions and the actions of our brothers and sisters. That’s why we joined these esteemed organizations, to uplift our fellow Black folks as well as communities-at-large. I applaud Skip for making a big deal of this.

2. The Divine 9 is one of the most effective and powerful social and professional networks in the WORLD. Look at the notable members of ALL of our organizations. Look, also, at college campuses across America where roughly 30% of the student leadership may be provided by organizations (Divine 9 organizations) that make up less than 1% of the entire student population.

3. A wealth of community service projects in the Black community are often conducted by members of the Divine 9, as chapters or individuals (active or not). This includes valuable hours logged tutoring and mentoring youth.

4. Every organization, including the Nation of Islam, the Masons, Eastern Stars, etc. has its fair share of embarrassing members. Yet those organizations should still be honored for what they stand for, and the great members should always be held as the gold standards.

5. You can’t police everybody (as much as leaders wish they could). From a leadership standpoint, you can only take appropriate actions to keep your respective organization on a productive course. I think that’s what Skip is doing.

When policies and procedures are broken by these renegades who refuse to accept fraternity guidelines, should we blame the entire organization for it or should we punish the culprits. I have witnessed the change from pledging to membership intake…and the same things are still there. At the end of the day there is a great divide between the “Black Greek” and the non-affiliated. The divide comes from the fact that there is a bigger picture that most can not/will not see. Now while in any organization (church, school, frat, club, etc., etc.) there are bound to be those who are less desirable and bring shame, the overwhelming majority are there to pass the light that is knowledge from man to man, woman to woman, and ultimately with the world. Bleak Greek Letter organizations (BGLO’s) have stood as a way for us to combat what 400+ years of discrimination and exclusion have brought to our doorstep. W.E.B. Dubois spoke of this in The Talented Tenth, and from what I have read here I can say confidently that none of us matches his genius. Is he a follower, or a leader of the highest caliber? You see we as a people have become so enamored with being independent and standing on our own that we have forgotten the age old and far more important wisdom of interdependence. You see it’s not about just the letters, colors, parties, and seeming popularity. The real deal is being part of something that is greater than oneself. The legacy of the illustrious members of the BGLO’s drives already ambitious men and women to do more, reach higher, and dig deeper. which in turn means that society ultimately benefits from our presence. Where would we as a people be without the legacy of a Dubois, MLK, Marshall, Ellington, or Dunbar? All of whom were educated, guided, formed, and shaped due to their experiences as members of their respective BGLO’s who’s members overwhelmingly stand bestride the great chasm of darkness carrying light. How can a black person be a “black Greek” when blacks do not originate from Europe.

The “Black Greek” system was designed to parallel the original system that would not allow blacks to join because of segregation laws and social acceptance of racism. Why would educated black people feel compelled to imitate a European based system? Why not parallel a African based brotherhood or sisterhood system?

Are them members of the “Black Greek” organizations aware the Greek culture produced, nurtured and accepted the practice of homosexuality, pediaphilia and lesbianism? Why would upright , conscious blacks want to imitate a culture that produced these ideas?

It’s simply laughable and sad that in the 21st Century these clowns are still trying to segregate themselves from the rest of the Black community by attempting to model and emulate an organizational framework based on a history and culture that is not theirs, that comes from a people who would not let them join in the first place because of racism.

2)For the record the Greeks copied us, not the other way around. We reclaim that legacy. Our schools of natural and esoteric knowledge are the basis for their growth and expansion.

4)You just aren’t looking hard enough. Have you contacted any of the respective organizations and offered your assistance collecting food, clothes, and other essentials for the needy? How many individuals have you registered to vote? How many have you tutored? Do you have a mentor program that helps you work with high school seniors giving them tours of colleges and letting them hang out on campus for a weekend while giving seminars on entrance requirements? How much money have you donated to scholarships for books? I’m pretty confident that if your parents are educated it’s because of some of the programs that BGLO’s had in place to encourage it in our community (APA’s go to school, go to college campaigns are an excellent example of this)A lot of what we do is behind the scenes because we don’t need publicity and credit.

The answer to your question is yes. The overwhelming majority of initiates today do not go through any hazing as required by law. And for you who keep asking the question about African rituals, they require the same type of ritual scarring to prove your “manhood/womanhood” Don’t you people get National Geographic? And also for the record, most chapters have a high GPA requirement. Some of the oldest chapters require a B average before you will be “tapped.”

LMAO yall are funny. I had the same mentality to an extent. I was in the military, survived bootcamp and the military police academy. I went to college and felt as though pledging was some buls**t and these young niggas couldnt teach me jack. Then I found PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY INC and after researching it, my hart was passionate for Sigma. I didnt need clout, I was gettin azz on the yard ya dig but the Sigma Beta Club (our youth mentoring program), Sigmas Waging War Against Cancer, Sigmas Against Teenage Pregnancy and other things the organization does drove me to want to become a member and the fact the the only person to really help me in the financial aide office is a Sigma.
WHile pledging I can honestly say I learned a hell of alot, things that continues to help me as a BLACK MAN. My older bruh influenced me to go for things I would mostl likely have never thought of. I ran 3 Sigma Beta Clubs and this experience and drive pushed me to become not only a mentor but an Educator. I”ve gained brothers that I wil die for and vice versa. There arent many professional black men in the hood. Sigma helped me think and look outside of the box of the hood and shoot for the stars. We were the first to have chapters in Africa and 3 of our members were African Presidents.
People will always have their opinions etc and thats fine. If you never pledged and are not in a frat or sorority than I wouldnt expect you to understand.
Hazing to the extent of putting soemone in the hospital and/or death is really messed up. I persoally blame the factt hat pledging is done underground AND old heads dont go back to keep the bruhs on the yard in line. There needs to be a strong sense of accountability.

Oh my goodness…I just can not believe the behavior of the fraternity members these days. I honestly feel that they have gone too far and this suspension should make all fraternity members understand that this sort of behavior will not be tolerated. It is so had that it had to result to this…I still wonder how many other stories remain to be untold.I have many male friends who are members of the Alpha Phi Alpha…but they fail to share their story of their hazing.

I know that many people have to pay their dues to claim theirs rightfully in front of other peers. I have my fair share of stories from BCT with the Army in ’07. It’s a real shame that things can go that far. So what about those who want to pledge and just havent done so yet? I mean people get motivated and encouraged and respresent things in a high and professional manner, but how motivated can a person be to be possibly facing terrible injuries or possibly death??? As far as im concerned no frat or soror are fighting in a war, so no one should be gettin killed. Gettin hurt….thats a different story, unfortunately sometimes things happen.

The problem with hazing is because it not only physical but psychological emotional and i have a big problem with psychological reformation. i have a few friends that got bloody, it’s not what you think but i won’t do into detail and i watch my friends change over night. The problem i see is it is a big image thing. I have seen people who do what they have to do to get in and they didn’t and seen people skate. Dudes with 2.2 get in the the gpa requirements are 2.7 and above. So when you have a buddy system then you aren’t fully doing what’s right and then you get people pledging people like a gang initiation. No matter what, you have to go into a probation period with any subgroup to prove yourself worthy. I wanted to be apart of a divine nine fraternity, but it isn’t about that. It wasn’t for me to do than. Understand you have an 21 years old immature pledging a group of people 19 to 25 in most cases and you can’t honestly I’m not against the greek life i’m against harming people in every way. Good job APhiA and investigate each situation and correct all behaviors.

KATrotter…i’m not Greek but there’s no way i can believe your answer to CaliFemme23′s question. everyone knows hazing still goes on…people ignore the law (and you know this)! and it’s not as big of a secret as you may think…Greeks do tell us about the paddling and sodomy (amongst other things), and the branding is visible of course. all of that stuff is hazing, in case you didn’t know. do you know of one person who refused to participate in the activities involved in pledging, yet still was able to cross (not including buddies or family members of prophytes)? if so, do tell.

Many Greek members on here may say “You can’t speak about what you don’t know,” but I can. It’s not that I don’t know what occurs during the intake process of a Greek organization because I do. A few years ago, I was a “pledge” during an intake process. I wanted to join a certain sorority because I was so inspired by the many influential women in my life that had helped cultivate me. The way my female high school teachers carried themselves and cared so deeply for their communities and their students made me aspire to be like them. I wanted to join the organization that they were a part of because certainly, that organization was destined to perform tasks to better communities and even the world. I researched that particular sorority and others, and I made the decision that I wanted to join that sorority in order to do great things as well. The founders were inspiring to me. They were strong women, headed for great things. They were the epitome of what a young girl who has had struggles in her life would want to reflect. I started the mission, and I was invited to join that particular sorority. So, I began the process. Little did I know, the process that I went through was nothing CLOSE to what I expected. The “pledges” were degraded, verbally abused, insulted and belittled, and ridiculed. I couldn’t understand how an organization that was supposed to uplift and empower women was doing the exact opposite. I watched my “sisters” suffer from sleep depravation, drastic weight losses, chronic fatigue and delirium. After several events that transpired and just days from that anticipated program/presentation, I decided that the organization that I so desperately wanted to join for it’s committment to community service was no longer what I visioned. The young Greeks were nothing like the ones I wanted to pattern myself after. I decided to drop that line. Of course, I felt really bad afterwards because many, many people didn’t like me for the action that I had done. After a while, I didn’t care anymore though.

I applaud all Greek organizational chapters that actually do all the things they stand for. I, in no way, am putting down all Greeks, but sometimes it takes going through something to know if it isn’t or is for you.

That was not for me. I’m still doing all of the things I vowed to do during my interview for that sorority . Everyday I’m responsible for 140 of God’s little angels. I love my students dearly and pray for them every morning. I go to work with a smile on my face hoping to encourage a young person and make them realize that they can achieve their wildest and most unimaginable dreams if they only believe in themselves. I have to remember that even on my worst day, I may be some child’s best hope.

So, for some of you that are offended and say us non-Greeks don’t know anything, you’re wrong, and for those of you Greeks that are doing what you vowed to do, my sisters and my brothers I applaud you.

As a member of a Divine Nine Org..I’m very disappointed to see this happening. I agree with everything Pres. Mason has stated and is doing to clean up this mess. I’ve seen this happen on my campus just recently with another Sorority (which is now off the yard). But, I wish the best for my brothers and know they’ll get their act together.

All this “hazing is illegal” crap is just to stop lawsuits and help insurance costs. Most times when someone doesn’t pledge i.e. get hazed they get treated differently within the organization. So it’s not just a few individuals. Like I said its a disease running rampant in these orgs because if it was just a “few” there would be no need to stop intake altogether correct?

I am a college graduate and pledging was not for myself. I have sisters and a huge family that did not break me down by making me cook, clean, running arrands, beatings or embrassing me(except for meeting my boyfriend). For some they needed and want that but not the kid. Hazing has been going on since these organizations began thats how they weed out the weak. Ppl do go overboard and if ppl spoke up sooner none of this would continue. I will be honest hazing exist, it always has and sadly enough it always will. When I pledged I built friendship that has lasted over 2 decades. I have bonded and felowshiped with greeks of every organization. I am an Alpha and I am proud to be one…now let me say i read alot of your post and let me say the misconception of black fraternalism is still incredibly overpowering…First allow me to bring this to attention…It has been pretty glossed over that hazing takes place outside the black greek community. Nobody mentioned the white greeks and people just didnt have much to say about the armed forces and their hazing rituals and nobody cares, they only cares when it happens in our orgs, now thats not my point of this point but I felt I should mention that. So much is said about our orgs and hazing but why do people subject themselves to it. How many people besides the 2 or 3 Alphas that posted on here actually know the details of what happened to the boy..I do..do you? probably not, all you know is what you read. Now I am not defending what happended to him, I think those responsible should be suspended from school the fraternity and tried in a criminal court. But lets be real, what was the boy thinking to allow that to happen to him? Commonsense tells you something aint right and the bells should of been going off for him.

Now I pledged and I said as long as what i went through didnt belittle me as a man or put me in a hospital I was fine with it…And I made it through wit my lbs (line brothers). I wasnt and didnt subject myself to anything dangerous or gross or gay to become a member of Alpha. It really aint that deep.

Cali: I believe one of your main things is why have pledging at all? Let me ask you this, dont you have to try out for a sports team, interview for a job? You have to show you want it right? Then pledge. When i say pledge I mean it in the old way it was used orginally, not about beating the hell out of somebody or belittling them as an individual. If you came to me and said “I wanna be an Alpha” and I said “why” u said “because I like the history, legacy, and I agree with the objectives and aims of the organization” and I said “well if you like em so much you should memorize em”..Technically thats hazing, but does that make sense. I mean if you really wanna be a member then shouldnt you want to learn those things and learn their origins and why our founders originally chose those things over the wealth of other knowledge available to them? This is something you represent forever, not just for college.

I guess my biggest thing though is perception. a good process in any organization will teach you that perception is everything. Once you cross you will be know forever as “John the Alpha” you are no longer “John Carter.” My prophytes told me when I was online that “Any and everything you do will be magnified once you cross, but the bad will be magnified ten times over.” When you do something great, you end up on page 32 of the paper, when you do something bad you are the front page cover story. When my chapter did our annual homeless program in which we slept outside in 25 degree weather in attempt to raise homeless awareness in our community, did you hear about that? When we got 100 people to sign up for the national bone marrow registry in one day did you hear about that? NO. And you didnt care to hear about it either. Most of yall have greek chapters in yall cities doing great things right now but yall dont and wont help. But let allegation of hazing get out, then everybody has an opinion on “these black orgs”..

How chapters have you heard about hazing and lawsuits throughout your life? 5, 10, 15, 25, heck 50! Guess what..there are over 700 chapters of Alpha alone! that doesnt even include the number of chapters of from the other 8 major frats and sororities. So your tails of 50 hazing incidents represent a literal pinch of black greek life amongst its thousands of chapters. Which is why I now digress, and many of you can say all you want that you dont care or never wanted to be greek but some of you have literally posted for days in response to what others have said about a topic “you dont care about” lol it so funny you would dedicate your time to something you dont care about, I am Alpha so I have an interest invested here, Why do you care? For the tall romantic guy… I see you tried to be cleaver and explain what you were feeling, but it was quite dumb. Commonsense and understanding the complexity of an organization are two totally different things. You expressed your ability to understand commonsense scenarios and you did a really, really good job! Yaaaaay! But you lack any and all understanding of the complexity of Greek life, history and culture. Most would call you a Greek hater, but I’ll keep an open mind. Simply put, a non-Greek understanding Greek culture is like a white female understanding the life of a black man in America.

Now on to the article…

First of all lets get the facts straight. The boy who was hospitalized was a diabetic suffering from kidney failure due to his condition. Second, the guy who was charged with aggravated assault was later released and the charges were dropped (Couldn‘t build a case). AND THRID, President Skip Mason pledged, was hazed (under the current law on what hazing is) and the consulting doctor is considered his BIG SISTER. Meaning she had a hand in Skip’s pledging process. (Probably more so than he had liked). Lets also state that mercer university’s Alphas were also under investigation because one of the new members died of swine flu. It was reported on the local news as a fatality due to swine flu and was later assumed by skip mason and others to be an act of foul play. (Sounds to me like Skip is fishing for a reason to start a ruckus)

As for hazing itself. It has always existed. Prominent members of society such as Dr. King (member of a phi a) went through a process. (He has a line name for a reason look it up)Even in the beginning a process was used to weed people out. It has always been there, whether it was the use of pain, humiliation, or any other form of over the top punishment…It was and will always be there. Black Greeks, white Greeks, military, athletic teams, masons, and beyond. They all have processes and it will never go away. Does anyone here think that someone who hasn’t earned their letters will get the respect of those who have? NO! If you can’t take the heat… well you know the rest. And for people who aren’t Greek, your opinion is your own but please try to understand the situation a little better before making assumptions.

Oh and the bottom line… I almost forgot. Skip Mason came into office with the banner of a hazing free organization blah blah blah (even though he clearly was hazed and was active in hazing after he crossed). Now he’s taking this situation and running with it to make a name for himself. THE PRESIDENT WHO PUT AN END TO HAZING. We’ll remember him as the president who put an end to Alpha. Great job Skipper.

The funniest thing about this discussion is how we have so many college educated blacks who still say “If you are not Greek , you will not understand”. How can you be black and be Greek? Greece is a country in Europe inhabited by Europeans. The level of brainwashing many of you have been exposed to is alarming. To have you willingly accept another culture as your own, while the actual Greeks will not accept you as a member of their culture is a great accomplishment by the power structure. I infer that many of you are ashamed to be black , that is why you cling to a European structure so hard.

The birth of my fraternity is rooted in social, economical, and intellectual equality. My founders didn’t seek to become Greek or white for that matter. What’s in a name? What’s in a label? Why is lil wayne, lil wayne…Why is GZA, GZA. Why is Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha… You’ve never taken one step in the shoes of GZA. You know nothing of the reasoning behind the artists name other than what he has revealed. You know little about Alpha, why it’s a Greek letter organization, why it was named as such or even why it exist. So how can you understand its culture if you have yet to personally witness it.

And it’s importance varies from person to person from generation to generation. I wish we could ask MLK why he joined, or is he too much of an uncle tom for his answer to be valid? Brainwashing is hardly the issue, my founders had their reasons… those reasons are still valid today. I have my own reasons and those are still valid to me and I don’t see myself compromising. Your question, why is it so important, raise many other questions. Why have groups, organizations, clicks, friends, teams or anything that excludes others? I didn’t pledge to feel important, or to feel like I was better than you or anyone else. I was recognized as the Alpha, but I didn’t spending every waking moment living by it. I don’t worship it, or feel as if I owe it more than it has given me. Let me tell you what hurts us more than anything and that’s division. The thought that I am better than you divides us as well as you thinking that I’m thinking that I’m better than you. Your paranoia divides us. Your assumptions divide us. Maybe the lack of understanding between Greeks (members of Greek letter organization since you wanna be so specific about it) and non Greeks divides us. But families have secrets, friends have secrets, you have secrets, I have secrets, alpha phi alpha has secrets, phi beta sigma has secrets, omega psi phi has secrets and so on. Those secrets and reasoning are lost on you because you are not apart of these organizations. So I could never explain it to you properly, without breaking my silence. That’s why you will never understand.

raventakayama, I don’t want to understand, you have the freedom to belong to whatever structure you want to. I don’t want to understand why black men will follow the example set by men who loved to have sex with young boys. I belong to an organization that does not accept homosexuals or homosexual behavior so we will probably never see eye to eye. i am a member of a black greek letter organization. i have been one for over thirty years. jazzpass, your hypothesis that weak minded people are selected for black greek letter organizations is invalid to be diplomatic. i came from very a very strong black family. i am one of the originators of the black student union, being in and active in the organization when it was an outlawed organization and had to meet off campus, sometimes secretly. i have maintainded membership in radical movements during college and beyond. my list of friendships include angela davis, kwame tourre and a list of other people who have spent a lifetime in service to the black community. i teach in inner city schools as my way of giving back to the people. there are many members of black greek letter organizations who are involved in service in many organizations, including gay organizations. one of my good friends who is a delta just friended me on facebook. she is an activist for black glbt issues nationwide, and i am proud to have her as a lifelong friend and fellow “greek”.

you make statements about the charitible activities but most activity is done directly through the fraternities and sororities themselves. the black community as a whole has been dissatisfied with the return on our time and monitary investments in charities like the united way. that is why a black people started to investigate way in which our monies could be reinvested directly back into out communities. kappa alpha psi has institued scholarship administered directly by the national and local chapters themselves. this way money collected can be kept form being diverted away from the intended target. this is not unique to kappa, as all the rest of the members of the black pan-hellenic have done the same. it is very easy to research the charitable activity of black greek organizations. they all list them proudly. my daughter received a scholarship from the local alpha phi alpha graduate chapter.

black greek letter organization were started during a time in american history when having organizations with then provacative names like the black student union was not going to happen on caucasian college and university campuses. the universities were just starting to have black student unions about three years before i got on campus. in order to have a organization where african americans could gather to relax and enjoy each other’s company, study group, or even for self protection the organizations took advantage of the rules governing organizations and chose to incorporate as greek letter organizations. black greek letter organizations did not found ourselves on the same principals as, or do they exist for the same reasons as caucasian greek letter organization. our whole existance is different than theirs. that is why contrary to how caucasian greek letter organizations tend to not have the lifelong sense of community as black greek letter organizations we maintain lifelong ties.

as far as serving the community we do so largely in invisible but significant ways. we are you teachers, counselors, and principals. we are your preachers and pastors. we are your older community organizers. we are your doctors, optometrists, dentists, lawyers and local elected politicians. we are your mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandmothers and grandfathers. the low profile roles are as significant as the more high profile roles, probably even more so

we are the people who fought the battles on college and university campuses that did not want african americans as students. we are the first persons in many familes to go to college or university thus leading the way for younger siblings, other relatives or even younger neighbors who looked up to us. we were the ones spent many lonely days in colleges and universities facing open hostilities, and i do mean hostilities with a “s”. we were the members and officers in the black student or pan african student unions.
we bring hundreds if not thousands of black children onto campuses.

and even by throwing parties on campuses we encouraged younger members of the community to come onto college and university campuses to be exposed to what they were.
