From the New York Daily News

The hot-button issue of whether radio should pay performance royalties to artists for playing their music has split Michigan Democrat John Conyers from some of his long-time allies in the civil rights movement.

As head of the House Judiciary Committee, Conyers has scheduled a session Wednesday for the committee to “mark up” the Performance Rights Act and send it to the full House for action.

The Rev. Al Sharpton and the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council, among others, have warned its impact would be “devastating” to minority stations, because they can’t afford more expenses in these hard times.

I don’t know about this protest..ON the one hand, this probably hurts black radio, but don’t the artists have the right to be paid for their airplay? I mean, these stations make money on the backs of music played…So unless their is some back door, under the table, insidious program going on that we don’t know about, I say those artists deserve to be paid!

If I had a radio staion..I wouldnt pay an artist to play. That doesnt make any sense. If the station dont play, who the hell will hear that song you love 50x a day and go buy it. It used to be PAYOLA where the label would pay the station to get into rotation, now they want to be paid …..Ummmm NO!

No they dont deserved to be paid!! Artist sell records on the strength of Airplay they get on the radios, thats how it always worked, if they had to pay a fee for everytime you heard a beyonce record, they would go outta business, Hence, NO BLACK RADIO STATIONS, you’d be stuck wit the TOP 40 radio stations, And you see how often they play black music.

As an artist, I believe they do deserve to be paid for performance. The artist is always the first to pay for everything, from recording to promotion, and the artist is always the last to be paid, if they’re paid. Artists don’t make money off record sales (They do, but it’s usually maybe 80 cents for every $15 if they’re on a major label). Radio stations need to stop playing the same 5 songs. I always thought though that they would get performance royalties that are paid by the PROs (look it up) which come from the radio stations who buy licenses to play their music

It seems that Conyers may propose a $500 annual blanket royalty fee as a part of the bill. Small radio stations should be able to afford that BUT… It creates a slippery slope!!!! You know when you give this corrupt business an inch…
This is all about these greedy labels finding ways to make money despite dwindling sales due to music sharing mixed with a bad economy.
All they’re doing is making me want to stop buying music even MORE!!!

The artists need not to be paid because it is like advertisement for them. Besides I only listen to the oldies pop stations or talk radio. Todays R and B stinks. I like the R and B, hip hop , pop music of the 70′s, 80′s and early 90′s. I like todays country. You need to check out country you may like it

Why would a radio station pay an artist to play his or her music, it make no sense to me. I would not pay artists because both sides are benefiting from this business venture.

The truth is we don’t have enough info about either to comment. Radio station for years have been involve in getting paid to play, we haven’t always been owners of our stations, just like black search engine not being own by blacks. We need to began to organize within our own communties and get some knowledge what we talk about because we still make statements without references or relative information. When we began to own our own entities and began to function as a wholesome community we will see a drastic change in how we do business and respond to civilize society.
