As Food Stamp Use Soars, Stigma Fades

MARTINSVILLE, Ohio — With food stamp use at record highs and climbing every month, a program once scorned as a failed welfare scheme now helps feed one in eight Americans and one in four children.
It has grown so rapidly in places so diverse that it is becoming nearly as ordinary as the groceries it buys. More than 36 million people use inconspicuous plastic cards for staples like milk, bread and cheese, swiping them at counters in blighted cities and in suburbs pocked with foreclosure signs.

Virtually all have incomes near or below the federal poverty line, but their eclectic ranks testify to the range of people struggling with basic needs. They include single mothers and married couples, the newly jobless and the chronically poor, longtime recipients of welfare checks and workers whose reduced hours or slender wages leave pantries bare.

While the numbers have soared during the recession, the path was cleared in better times when the Bush administration led a campaign to erase the program’s stigma, calling food stamps “nutritional aid” instead of welfare, and made it easier to apply. That bipartisan effort capped an extraordinary reversal from the 1990s, when some conservatives tried to abolish the program, Congress enacted large cuts and bureaucratic hurdles chased many needy people away.

i have no problem if you are on food stamps and you are working hard and just need the extra little bit of money to help you out each month, but what i am sick of seeing is all these people poppin out 10 kids, they aint working, and they keep getting all this money for food…half the time they just buy junk food…im sorry but i dont support that lifestyle and my tax dollars shouldnt either…i work at a grocery store and 99 percent of our customers on food stamps buy chips, soda, candy, prepared sandwiches, donuts etc. they dont buy fresh fruits or vegetables, they dont buy loaves of bread and lunch meat, all because good for you food is too expensive for people that are receiving FREE MONEY each month. they wanna know why people are so damn fat now days…well here is the problem. WIC is a wonderful program that provides for single mothers and children…and it regulates what you can buy, why cant food stamps do that? Im a hard working person and im tired of seeing all my hard earned money going to all these people that dont deserve it and dont know how to appreciate it. Literally on a daily basis i hear people complain about not having enough money on their ebt cards to purchase that extra 2 liter of soda or that bag of doritos…seriously? i wish i could complain about not having enough free money. Or the people that buy steak on lobster on their ebt cards. I make good money and i cant even afford that crap. the food stamp program is good for people who deserve and appreciate it, but it needs to be changed. there needs to be regulation on what people can buy, and there needs to be a cut off for certain people.

I am a single male, but I have been jobless since October of this year. I go to job interviews, but cant go on an empty stomach. I finally applied for the EBT recently just to keep a few things in my pantry, I could care less if some old rich people look over my shoulder. I am going to get those hotdogs and bread, and call it a day. My taxes paid for that.
