From Newsweek:

At the Children’s Research Lab at the University of Texas, a database is kept on thousands of families in the Austin area who have volunteered to be available for scholarly research. In 2006 Birgitte Vittrup recruited from the database about a hundred families, all of whom were Caucasian with a child 5 to 7 years old.

The goal of Vittrup’s study was to learn if typical children’s videos with multicultural storylines have any beneficial effect on children’s racial attitudes. Her first step was to give the children a Racial Attitude Measure, which asked such questions as:

How many White people are nice?
(Almost all) (A lot) (Some) (Not many) (None)

How many Black people are nice?
(Almost all) (A lot) (Some) (Not many) (None)

During the test, the descriptive adjective “nice” was replaced with more than 20 other adjectives, like “dishonest,” “pretty,” “curious,” and “snobby.”

Vittrup sent a third of the families home with multiculturally themed videos for a week, such as an episode of Sesame Street in which characters visit an African-American family’s home, and an episode of Little Bill, where the entire neighborhood comes together to clean the local park.

In truth, Vittrup didn’t expect that children’s racial attitudes would change very much just from watching these videos. Prior research had shown that multicultural curricula in schools have far less impact than we intend them to—largely because the implicit message “We’re all friends” is too vague for young children to understand that it refers to skin color.

Yet Vittrup figured explicit conversations with parents could change that. So a second group of families got the videos, and Vittrup told these parents to use them as the jumping-off point for a discussion about interracial friendship. She provided a checklist of points to make, echoing the shows’ themes. “I really believed it was going to work,” Vittrup recalls.

The last third were also given the checklist of topics, but no videos. These parents were to discuss racial equality on their own, every night for five nights.

At this point, something interesting happened. Five families in the last group abruptly quit the study. Two directly told Vittrup, “We don’t want to have these conversations with our child. We don’t want to point out skin color.”

Vittrup was taken aback—these families volunteered knowing full well it was a study of children’s racial attitudes. Yet once they were aware that the study required talking openly about race, they started dropping out.

The research was done on 5-7 year olds but the caption says babies. Look at the number of parents that dropped out when asked to talk to their children. Could it be true that white folks don’t know how to discuss being prejudice or bigotted to their children. Because they know that white folks in general are racist.

    1. There is a narrow window of opportunity we have to mold a child’s subliminal thinking/learning..that’s up till the age of 4-5. They are mimicking your habits, language, and the people you hang around, the environment you put them in. It becomes instinct. Cultural/racial education is just that, education. It won’t make anyone change their preference of friends. This goes back thousands of years. When whites were in a certain part of the world, blacks were in a certain part of the world, asians…etc. The world has gotten bigger and INSTINCT tells us to stay with our own kind. We just have to learn to respect each other as fellow HOMOSAPIENS. Just because we are higher up on the food chain, doesn’t mean we can defeat our natural instincts. There are too many ignorant people in every race that will always try to break the harmony that MOST people try to bring between our cultures. In the end, we have to understand that each race has it’s strong points and weak points…based on the environment in which we came. Blacks have dark skin because we were created in a region rich in sunlight/heat…so our skin had to survive that environment…we had to live a certain way…..whites don’t need to be in that environment as evident of the number of skin cancer directly related to over exposure to the sun…and they have a large amount of hair (men on their body and women on their head) to survive the harsh winters of europe….different environment…different cultures…education is the key we don’t need to take it beyond that…don’t need to force living together…just need to understand our differences.

I always said racists are made, not born. Nobody is born with views like that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Shes_Back/ Shes_Back

Sefub…that was a big assumption…I think that PEOPLE in general are racist, not necessarily jus “white” people. I’m sure that if this study was done on any group of children; white, black, hispanic, asian, etc…there would be a similar attitute among those children. Like the study says, children that young don’t understand subtle messages of equality, it has to be OUT there and blunt. Do we know if this study was done on children who grew up in all (or mostly) white neighborhoods without much interaction with people of different races? Kids are very honest, especially at that age. If they see someone “different” on the outside, that they aren’t used to seeing, it’s a given that they are going to say so. Notice that I didn’t even TOUCH the subject of parents teaching their kids racist behavior, because that is a whole other (long) dicussion. But, other races and cultures can be just as hateful towards people of different races/cultures as some whites can be….

For fun white babies being taught to discriminate against black babies.now white children are being taught as babies to prejudge black babies based on skin color.” Why “. As if white parents teaching their children as 4 and 5 year olds to hate and persecute, look down on, that they are inferior and to do what ever they can to hurt them because they are n****rs,aint enough now they want their kids to know and despise the blacks because of skin difference.that why sometimes when black pepople are out and in the midst of whites their children show that they are afraid of blacks.

We need to do a study on our own people!! We blacks are the most racist of anyone, we even have intra-racism….Black people do not treat light skinned people very nice, observe!! Maybe because there is a preconceived notion that they are stuck on themselves….Yes we “Blacks” are discriminated on at times, but I don’t think as much as we discriminate…we make people wanna be us…nothing is wrong with that but, come on…let’s look at s**t like it really is,, You have to have a Black Swag, you can’t talk too proper, you gotta have thick lips, and a fattt asss, or else you get laughed at….WE WILL TALK ABOUT YO’ ASSS BADDD!!!! THE WHITES IN THIS COUNTRY ARE SOOO AFROCENTRIC…HAHAHA…LOOK AT WHITES ANYWHERE ELESE IN THE WORLD…THIS S**T IS A NOVELTY THICK LIPS FAT ASS TANNNED WHITE WOMEN…THEY DOING SOMETHING ON THE LOW TO THEMSELVES…WE NEED TO GET A GRIP ON DIS S**TT…THE SAME ISSUES WE HAVE OTHER CULTURES GOT WORST…WE ARE ON TOP OF THE WORLD AND WE NEED TO START ACTING LIKE IT, NO ONE OWES US A HOT DAM THANG, I KNOW IM OFF TOPIC BUT IT NEED TO BE SAID….and as always if you wana fight, fight my dick and nutz in da back of ya throat, ya heard me!!!!

I saw a similar study done a few years back where children of all races were asked to point out the ‘Bad’ or ‘Good’ baby doll out of 2 (one black, one white) and guess what??.. Of course, virtually all of them pointed at the Black Doll as the ‘Bad’ one. I’m sure videos of that study can be found at YouTube or elsewhere online. If I find a link, I’m gonna post it here for all to see. It’s truly a symbol of the manufactured zeitgeist that is embedded into our sub-conscience throughout our lives. We have many political hurdles to overcome (The Bush Clan, Obama, The Bilderberg Group & the Banking Elites) before thing will even begin to improve in that area. ;-)

People preach hate, people practice hate, children see hate, hear hate and of course they become hateful. blacks, whites, Asians etc discriminate against their own people on a daily basis. if you are not white and christian you are dumb and trailer trash. If you are not a negro of the people you are a uncle tom.If you are bright-skinned high yellow, you are of white descent you are not black you are shunned and assumed a snob treated differently etc. In Asian society if you are not well taught as a man, (forget the girls because they should be silent and know their place)you are not worthy. They prefer to educate and have sons vs. daughters. No one race is different, it’s just how society views it. People treat you how you want to be treated, you act like a ni**er guess what they think you are garbage hence they treat you that way. In the end everyone consciously or sub-consciously wants to be someone else, or possess what they have. White girls, wanting full lips, bigger butts darker skin. Blacks girls wearing long weave, getting surgery, dying their hair blonde, getting blue contacts. People won’t be satisfied in what they have because they want what they cannot have, they’ll changed themselves until their is nothing left to do. It is very sad no one has no respect for themselves thus no respect for no one else. Until everyone knows their place the better off we will be. I mean people can be with whomever they want do whatever they want, just remember who they are. People should not be judged by no other man or woman and let alone a child. Only one person has the right to judge and people ought to remember that.

It really doesn’t matter what a 6 mo old or 8 year old or any year old THINKS about people of different races. What matters is can they take their actual experiences and relate to people, instead of what they initially percieve…..

IOW,this is about the dumbest articles I’ve read on race in my life….

    LOL

    RE: XL_611

If you watched FOX Business about the time you were leaving this comment, They pointed out a story about how SEVERELY important those years are (6 mo – 8 yrs) during a childs development. They can teach us a lot if we pay attention because they don’t have the ability to blindly follow someones GOOFY opinions.

All this talk about race is not just whether the news is interesting, It’s the fact that we begin to discuss the issue amongst ourselves. (Psych 101)

P.S. I wonder about the artistry of the photographer who took the pictures of the twins in this article. They are sitting on concrete leaning against splintered wood! The darker one actually has his hand in dirt (Potentially DANGEROUS GERMS for an undeveloped immune system). I LOVE CHILDREN, so I noticed. Did you?

the title is a bit misleading . Of course babies can tell the difference between different skin colors. You don’t need to do a study to prove that. Just because they looked at a picture longer doesn’t mean they are going to grow up to be racist.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Refreshingone/ Refreshingone

Babies dont discriminate adults do. That is a learned behavior.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/bgktynatx/ bgktynatx

With me working with children of all races, I must say the racism within any child comes from the parents. If a white child only sees white children, plays with white childen, and their parent keeps them in their little circle what else is expected. I played Baby Einstein for 2 babies of mixed nationalities, and they were fine with any baby that was not black. I noticed that the babies would stop smiling, and became expressionless when a black baby came across the tv, so I rewound the video, and the same thing happened again. I live in Austin,Tx., and this is not rare. I get stares from little white kids all the time. Matter of fact that ranch in Tx. where every white person was related, they all thought black ppl had tails, and that was what they were taught by the adults. Things that make you go HMMMMMMMM.

THIS is the most enlightening I’ve read today: “We don’t want to have these conversations with our child. We don’t want to point out skin color.”

I know from experience that babies/children do not discrimante based on race (as adults often do). They “discriminate” based on what is familiar to them.

Through the early years, if the parents do not expose them to other races, then yes, they can become too familier with one particular race – on a sidenote, if the parents are racist, they will teach them the same.

My grandmother had a neighbor that trained her dogs to bark at Blacks. Not comparing here, but like animals, children can be trained by their parents, be it positive or negative to have the same attitudes and beliefs as they do – until they grow and experience their own interactions with those different from them.

Come on people, everything is not about race…

btw – alpha111906 – you are on point w/your comment.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Leon, the only REAL issue with childhood development has to do with how much change are you going to have to go through as an adult, in order to be functional, successful or dynamical.

So, how one was raised is of little value to an adult, if one needs to change in order to be in one of the above categories. However, one can change. That’s what being an adult is all about.

So, any idea of someone not being able to change because that’s how they were raised is ludicrous.

Another thing is, it’s even irrelevant during being raised as to what impact the environment has on a person. My mother was contemptuous of any variety of races when I was young. I had no idea of what she was talking about and could never relate to her about anything. Still can’t. And many children make the very same claims about their parents.

So, it’s not a matter of nature vs nurture. It’s how they work together for one thing.

But even then the fact of self determinism serves to do nothing but make non-sense of it all.

Thus, the only one to blame for any given behavior, is the one blaming……

    LOL

I am An African American woman and a mother of a daughter who will be 21 this year. My daughter is very fair skin with brownish/blonde hair. My husband is from a mix family but olive complexion, myself brown. I was always questioned about her nationality (mix) and she is still questioned today.

My daughter grew up around my family, which my father was dark complexed who she adored. My brother dark skin and other siblings, nieces and nephews dark to brown skin. I always brought her dolls of color because she was so fair skinned and I wanted her to know it was all shades of people. Well to make along story short, when she was around 18 -24 months when I noticed that when we were in public she would shy away from black people and would be more excepting to white’s. I didn’t understand why and would constantly talk to her about her actions, and tell her she should speak to all people. Oneday we was in the grocery store and an older african american woman spoke and smiled at her and she inturn said hi. She than turned to me and said see mommy I spoke to the black lady, I was so embarrassed.

Today it is still puzzled about where her racism came from ….lol

    to nwashjones:

From the time black (and white) kids are 2 to 3 years old, most folks sit their kids in front of the TV set, and what do they see? A wonderful world that is 99% white, with white Harry Potters, white magicians, white people doing all kinds of wonderful things. How often do they see black people in positive ways?

There is all kind of coded racism and programming in the media. For example, there was a video given to black kindergartners about cute with white donkeys and big mean-looking brown donkeys. Draw your own conclusions about the hidden messages.

Until we understand that we live in a white supremacy system that programs ALL of us to think white is superior, we will keep scratching our heads, asking, “Where did they learn racism from?” Also, too many black people show their preference (and pride) when their children have “white features” (hair, skin, eyes) and then wonder why whiter-looking children feel superior and darker-skinned children feel “inferior.” WE ARE TEACHING THEM and WE black adults need to GET REAL with about it…
