BlackBarbie

From TheGrio.com:

Kelly Motzko didn’t set out to court controversy when she entered a Target to find a gift for a four-year-old girl. Naturally she found herself in the toy aisle but she was not at all pleased by what she encountered. Among the many Barbies of various races in that toy aisle, there was a black Barbie that stood out for all the wrong reasons.

Her dress was cut down the front to accentuate her noticeable cleavage. According to Motzko, a St. Paul, Minn.-based behavioral specialist, there were Barbies of other ethnicities on the aisle but the African-American Barbie was the only one that appeared highly sexualized.

“The only Barbie wearing such revealing clothing was the black Barbie,” says Motzko, who is white. “I found that upsetting. I was offended. It was just an offensive thing for the Barbie to be dressed like that [in the first place] and, then to be the only one of that skin color, I found that offensive.”

The White barbie doll is just as sexualized as this Black one (all the outfits, cars, houses, etc), but when you put a beautiful Black one, it’s sexual…can you say B-I-A-S-E-D???? I knew you could….

…I fail to see the problem. Thats a very nice outfit. I’d wear it in a heartbeat. If you are looking for Barbie as a moral guidline, you need to reasses your parenting approach…Immediately.

I was at Toys R Us this past weekend with a friend when I noticed this same Blabk Barbie. I was telling her why is she the only one dressed like this?? When looking at this picture above as well as thinking of past Barbies, one would not think it was too bad of an image. Yet, for the line or theme of Barbie dolls for this collection yes the Black Barbie does stand out in a sexual way. A picture of the other Barbie next to the black barbie would put the whole image in perspective. The other Barbie dolls of each different skin tone wears a different outfit. If they were all wearing the same one then one cannot pinpoint which Barbie is ‘sexualized’. If all of the other Barbies have the same outfits within their box- then it would be different as well. For the only dark-skinned representation of Matel’s Barbie to be dressed in such a manner, one can only ask what is this company trying to convey to society/ little girls about what dark-skinned women represents in today’s society?

You don’t have to buy the barbies if you don’t want to. didn’t Beyonce’s company shoot an ad with a black baby surrounded by white Dolls or the other ad, where there are three girls, two white in the front, and the black girl in the back, way in the back.

It’s not that bad and I don’t see what the fuss is all about. I guess they wanted to make the doll as realistic as possible because only a “sistah” could rock an outfit like that. However, parents ultimately have to be the judge of what toys they get their children including dolls.

dayum can we black folks do something without criticism.. jeez we give the black doll a little boobies and people go wild.. u give the white doll the car, the house, the dog, ken, and a bikini on shes alright.. how bout we will think its to sexual when the black babrie have a pimp named kenny,a cadillac, a crib, a pittbull, and foodstamps in her shopping cart.. other than that theres nohing wrong with the doll.. and plus black folks know how to sew, so if we think she needs a little cover up will sew a rag between her dress.

wytechocco, “Damn at least there is a black barbie!!!!”

See its that thinking right there that is the problem! I could really care less about Barbie with some cleavage. Barbie has always been a highly trampish ‘toy’. BUT when it comes to black and anything….”Atleast there is one!!!!” Is NEVER a good approach.
That sounds like settling, and I think we have done enough of that…

I don’t think that the outfit is appropriate for little girl to have on a doll period, the color of the doll is irrelevant. I am concerned about the young girl who is going to grow up with this doll and when she overdevelops at the age of 13 will think that it is ok to dress with her cleavage out. I hate to say it but when it comes to things like this I am happy I have sons

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrmanners/ mrmanners

    Just a little research.

Barbie Basic is a collector edition not geared for children really. You can look at the doll and know, how many little girls would want to play with a barbie in a dark coloured business suit?

Why do we have to show skin? our beauty within, our faces and clothes… aren’t they pretty enough to be noticed and accepted? we are encouraging our children to show their bodies off to anyone. we teach them that our pin numbers to our banking accounts are more worthy to be safeguarded..
just another time we are playing follow the “leader”..its just so sad that the leaders are lost and are following the followers..and round and round we go…

Here’s my 2 cents…. I think it’s wrong for any toymaker to market toys for young children with the figure dressed so provocatively. If i did have daughters, I would not want them playing with a toy who has their cleavage all out there. Children visualize things very easily. The boys playing with G.I. Joes envision themselves in the role of Duke or Snake Eyes. And girls playing with a Barbie toy with her chest all flaunted are going to envision themselves in the same thing. While I am glad there is an African-American Barbie toy out there, i think the toymaker could have dressed her in a more appropriate outfit.

So the black doll was set to look more s**tty, or were they all looking the same? People who have a stereotype of blacks, will use that stereotype and relate it to the doll. If white girls are so pure, then why would they even make these s**tty Barbie’s, who symbolize bimbos who marry rich men and spend a lot on shopping? Isn’t that what Sex and the City bimbos are based on? If it’s good to sell to that image of white women, then the black ones are equal to them, and there is the problem- unless you’re arguing about the portrayal of women, as a whole, in this manner. The black stereotype, mixed with the real meaning of Barbie, is the only time people connect the dots about what Barbie symbolizes? What a shame!

@ Kelly Motzko where have you been at…the white Barbie dolls have had the same making of the black barbie doll for years now. They change the dress code with the year and style. So for you to go off on the deep end of the black doll is what I would say is ashame. Did you you go off the deep end when the WHITE barbie did the same dress code and with Ken? And on top of that you got alot of dolls out here that look worse than the BLACK barbie. So I hope you took the time to address them as well. Either way 85% of little girls don’t play with neither race of barbie dolls anyway. Some have their own baby to play with…maybe the age group from 2yrs to 10 might still play with them.(JMO)

There’s something about the black body especially a female one. Black women have been exoticized since the beginning of history, their proportions making them fetishes and objects. The barbie is just yet another way of objectifying the black body. The sad thing is that no one sees anything wrong with it, showing just how internalized this systematic objectification has become. Like racism it doesn’t blatantly hit you in the face it subtly exists and supported by those it affects. Its a shame.

Okay, not all “black” barbie dolls are like this. When I was a girl, all my dad allowed me to buy was black barbie dolls, and not once did I see clevage, or anything sexual. They were fully cloth. But to be truthful, I can understand where some people might have found this crazy, but Its not offensive.(not to me) If I had a little girl, I wouldnt but this doll for her, just because of the simple fact that her boobs are out. And I wouldnt want her to think its okay for women to be putting themselves out there like that, because kids do mimic everything. I would buy my child another black doll, just not this one..

Kelly please get a life seriously there is much more things in the world to worry about other than a freaking doll. Its not like you cant just purchase additional clothes for the darn doll anyway. There is over millions of boots, tops, dresses, pants, watches, handbags, and accessories to give the doll. Personally you are taking this more to a personal issue as if your jealous of the doll having a better figure than you or something is that what it is your taking this personal against the BLACK barbie because it has more figure than you do?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Nefertiti313/ Nefertiti313

To tell you the truth, this is the first time that I’ve seen a black doll that really looks someone I know. This black Barbie is reminiscent of Kenya Moore, the former Miss USA — who I personally think is one of the most gorgeous women (black or white) in the world. This Barbie also reminds me of my cousin. The complexion is realistic — as are the features. Both of the women that this doll reminds me of have real hair that is as long as this doll’s.

It’s really too bad that Mattel decided to make the dress so dramatically low-cut. Without the plunging neckline, the dress is a simple basic black dress with lovely satorical lines — a classic that every woman should have in her wardrobe.

Instead of double D cups, Mattel should have proportioned the doll for a 34-B cup. Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures for white women. We don’t need our children being negatively influenced into thinking that huge breasts are the only way that they can be beautiful or sensual. Big breasts are not something that most black women desire, so we don’t need anything to create new issues.

With a few tweaks (breast reduction and a higher neckline), I think this doll is fine.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/brandip77/ brandip77

I personally think all Barbies are too provocatively dressed for the young girls who play with them. This Barbie’s cleavage is too much for even some adults. lol But I like that this Barbie has a darker complexion. Our little girls are growing up to think that white or lighter complected dolls and humans are more attractive. I just hope girls would not grow up thinking attractiveness is all physical. Character, mentality and intellect weigh just as heavily as outer aesthetics.

WELL WE MUST ADMIT THAT TIMES ARE NOT HOW THEY USED TO BE. LOTS OF THINGS HAVE CHANGED. EVEN INNOCENT CHILD LIKE CARTOONS AND SHOWS ARE GEARED TOWARDS EITHER SEX, FOOD, OR MONEY…AND SOMETIMES ALL THREE AT ONCE. THIS IS WHERE GOOD PARENTING COMES INTO PLAY. YOU TEACH YOUR CHILD ABOUT VALUES AND BEING APPROPRIATE. SHE IS DRESSED SEXY I MUST ADMIT, BUT WHEN YOU INSTILL IN YOUR OWN CHILD THAT THINGS ALONG THOSE LINES ARE NOT PERMITTED AND THAT IT IS FABRICATED TO LOOK GOOD THEN…I DONT SEE THE ISSUE. NO I WOULDNT GO OUT AND BUY THAT FOR A SMALL CHILD. NOR WOULD I BUY THE PREGNANT BARBIE, OR ANYTHING ALONG THOSE LINES FOR MY FOUR YEAR OLD. TO ME THIS IS NOT ABOUT A BARBIE BEING DRESSED SEXY, BECAUSE THE WHITE BARBIE HAS BEEN WEARING MINI SKIRTS SINCE FOREVER, WITHOUT ANY UNDIES IF YOU WANNA GET TECHNICAL. THIS ALL BOILS DOWN TO SKIN COLOR. HAD IT BEEN A WHITE DOLL I WILL BET MY LAST DOLLAR, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT THAT FAR. PERSONALLY I LOVE THE OUTFIT. WOULD I BUY IT FOR A CHILD NO. ALTHO HER CLEVAGE IS SHOWING, HER SKIRT IS AT A NICE LENGHT, AND SHES STANDING CONFIDENT. BARBIE IS TECHNICALLY AN ADULT. DRESSED IN LATEST FASHIONS AND STYLES. BLACK, WHITE, PLAID, POLKA DOT OR STRIPE, BARBIE CAN BE PLACED IN ANY TYPE OUTFIT THE MAKERS DECIDE FOR HER TO WEAR. GET OVER IT LADY WITH THE PROBLEM. THINK ABOUT THE TRUE REALITY BEFORE YOU GO BASHING SOMETHING SO PETTY AND UNREALISTIC. THE OUTFIT IS SEXY BUT YET STILL PROFESSIONALLY FIT.

In any case every barbie should make a young girl appreciate being beautiful. However they went a bit tooooo far with the black one. I feel the boobs are showing a lot more than they show on the other ethnic backgrounds of barbies.
I don’t like us being portrayed like this. I am educated and I have held asst. coordinator positions and I am now a life relations counselor through a faith based organization. I certainly did not show my boobs to get this job. I don’t want young black or white or any color girls to feel that they have to dress like this to get a good position. PUT SOME CLOTHES ON BARBIE. KEEP HER SEXY, but tone it down a bit!!!

And what else is new? White people always want others to think that we are inhumane creatures. This takes the blame off them. They are the real devils. Anytime one race of people can enslave another race and say it’s for their own good while profiting from it, that’s demonic mentality working.

This doll and the whole Basics Collection are for adult collectors. She’s just sold in chain stores. Yeah, paying $19.95 for a Barbie isn’t bad but $14 for the clothes for a child? Um… no. I swear bisexual women are worse than 15 yo boys…. the doll is in-phucking-appropriate! Why would I want my 7yo child playing with and looking up to the image of a s**ttishly dressed woman?
And, reinforcing the stereotypes of black women is again in-phucking-appropriate! Especially in the hands of young girl!
And here is the sad part: so many women on BP chose to have the picture that represents them, the image that want the world to see of them, is of them posing “seductively” (I used quotations because they fail at this) dressed in some low dress or blouse showing their cleavage, or bent over showing their arse.
    It is pathetic!

Kids reflect their parents (or the adults that raise them), not a barbie. If little Uniqua or Lakesha thinks Black Barbie is ugly it cuz mamma told her she wuz ugly and not because Mattel is pushing some secret hidden code/agenda. Why it is called barbie anyway? Shouldt it be called Ufabia or Laquesha? should it be dressed in authentic(?) Afrcian (?) garb? Shouldnt the box be lettered in Zulu script and the plastic made in the box pumped only from Nigerian wells? After all, its so important for kids, sespecially black ones, to be exposed to their culture through their toys. its not like they have families where they can pick it up….the mass media is responsible for that, isnt it ?

N-Please. When y’all gonna take responsibility for your selves and your own damn kids and stop looking for your problems outside yourself ?

how can anyone else take us serious?
Do you see a Asian Barbie with Chopsticks?
Do you see a Mexican Barbie with having a Fiesta?
Do you see a Korean Barbie being portrayed cooking DOG?

The issue is that the black barbie is the only doll that is sexed up with cleavage. I saw these dolls while in the toy aisle at Target and was highly offended. Adult collector or not, Mattel should be held accountable for why they chose only one doll (out of about 12) to be sexy and that one doll was the black. They have been in the business long enough to me mindful of the messages and images they put out and that was a very foolish (or perhaps calculated) decision. Instead of griping on message boards, how about emailing the CEO. Off to write my letter now!

So what? all it is is a doll that is all nothing else, if anyone can get turned on by a doll then they have some very serious problems and if they came up with a white doll instead of a black one then everyone would be saying OH, I’m so offended they don’t think that black people are sexy only white people and one more thing if you don’t want your kids to play with it then don’t buy it for them.

I’m confused. How did the story START off as one woman’s anger…only to end up as a PLUG for another’s organizational PLUG–just because it happens to be black and deal with dolls!?! WDF??? Damn! I’m still sitting here pissed at the fact that this doll is being sold in the children’s section…but then again…where the hell else do you FIND Barbie being sold?!? How many GROWN A$$ED black women do you know actually buys and collects Barbie’s UNLESS it’s some SPECIAL edition? Then again, this boobilicious doll does go into that category. Just throw a ball gown on her and say she’s a “lady in waiting!”

A message to all smart black people and not these negrow types
Stop buying these white owned and produced dolls.
Since they owned the companies, they will depict black people, black
females anyway they want and get away with it.
Instead of buying some black barbie BS.
Go find some sister’s who make black dolls that have our women
looking normal and some clothes on.
    Not this contemporary non-sense.
That’s why you negrows are confused now, trying to fit into this insane
white world. Know your real culture and history and forget some black barbie. Black women dressing up with this phony, cheesy barbie look.
Then they wonder why folks see a vast % of as crazy.
Black women need to wear afrika and forget a barbie.

After reading this article, I too was prepared to write a letter to Mattel expressing my disgust at this blatant mis representation of my fellow sisters. But then thanks to ShawtiiSexxxiiThick who posted the link: http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&ic=48_0&search_query=barbie+basics&Find.x=0&Find.y=0&Find=Find , I was able to see the entire Barbie Basic Black Label Collection. Now after seeing the entire collection, I’m not as offended. I see where they were going with that specific African American Barbie (There are 2 other African American Barbies in the line as well). I am almost 100% positive that the dressing of this specific AA Barbie was not done maliciously or with the intent to “tar” the image of African American women. People lets save our energy for the real culprits. Now do i think ANY of these Barbies should be marketed to children? hell to the naw. If they are adult collectors then they need to do just that.

    • We should definitely support businesses that demonstrate a real commitment (i.e., investment and action) to serving ALL of their customers, taking into account the culture and preferences of identifiable groups within their customer base. Our support should include feedback that gives these businesses the information they need, minus any categorical assumptions, name calling, or UN-necessary drama (I emphasize “UNnecessary” because sometimes the drama IS necessary).

Based on the comments that Ms. Motzko reportedly gave the reporter and in light of her line of work (behavioral science), it appears that her distaste for the Black Barbie wasn’t because the doll is Black or because she thought it was improper for Mattel to invest in a Black Barbie product line. It seems she was concerned that although there were, in her words, “other ethnicities on the aisle ….. the African-American Barbie was the only Barbie that appeared highly sexualized.”

She went on to say in the interview that she found it “offensive … for the Barbie to be dressed like that [in the kids' section of the store] and, then to be the only one of that skin color [dressed in that manner].”

I don’t think it’s fair to mock Ms. Motzko to scorn merely because her complaint involved a Black doll. I think we should look at the character and intent of her — which, again, based on the text of the story that was reported (the video was deleted by the time I read the article) — seemed sincerely aimed at criticizing Mattel’s failure to see how the doll’s sexualized attire might affect the self esteem of little Black girls.

So as for Ms. Motzko’s complaint to Mattel? I Tax_Dat As ordinary income to Mattel, which should see more business and purchases of the doll from younger audiences as a result of the knowledge that Ms. Motzko dropped on them about that audience.

Thats part of the whole. Discrimination takes an ugly turn when you speak about Black women, so I expected for them to make a Black Barbie, AND for her to be either ugly, or hootchie just because. I think that until Black people make our own things, idiots will continue to show passive aggressive signs of stereotyping and racism. BTW,I never thought Barbie was cute anyway!

Misz_pink you’re stupid, why can’t she just be offended? Pisses me off when people put stuff on race like that, first people b***h because they think the person is black and complaining now b***h because the woman is white lay the f**k off. People complain about dolls wearing in appropriate clothing all the time, OF ALL COLORS! How do I know? I collect dolls, people b***hed about Bratz dolls because they were wearing thongs under their clothes for goodness sakes, the white barbie has been critisized for they way she dresses as well. And it wasn’t because people didn’t want the white dolls looking sexier than them, it was because it was too sexual for a CHILD!

They system is racist in this country because I actually went around some department and toy stores and find that ALL the white dolls especially the blonde hair ones were stocked up and ALL the black dolls either packed in another sections where you won’t see unless you walk to the BACK OF THE STORES AND SOMETIMES THE BLACK DOLLS ARE IN THE STOCKROOMS!

I called one toy stores out for that because The Princess and the Frog dolls were all in the stockrooms while white dolls was there for all to see. Mind you it’s the rage to buy and own The Princess and the Frog dolls yet this particular stores which was in a black/brown community mixed of english and spanish speaking people. As far as I’m concerned putting black dolls in the back or stockrooms is a reminder of the days when black people have to sit in the back of buses! America seriously got a LONG way to go and I thinks it’s time the parents, grandparents and whomever make a stand to these stores stop this emotionally and mentally racism! Oh, the manager of the store made some bs excuses and I said to them you’re brown and you telling me this bs excuses why the black dolls stay in back of store/stockroom? Now everybody I KNOW boycotting the stores that do these kind of things.

Hello??? Has anyone seen the really dark-skinned Barbie with the super-short cropped cut that’s in this line as well? This doll is gorgeous. As a matter of fact, I bought one and I didn’t have to wait for anyone to pull it out of the back stockroom (not saying that this does not occur because I know that it does but I live in a predominately White area). Aside from the scantily clad Barbie, I think that Mattel is doing a great job in representing the different shades and color variations of African-American/Black American dolls in this line. Big ups to Mattel!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/i-know1/ i-know1

How sad. Black women claim they want to be respected as strong, smart independent people and not as sexual playgrounds. Well guess what…this doll represents overt sexual overtones. But, I agree with the toy maker’s decision to market the doll in this manner…after all, isn’t this how Black women prefer to dress. This doll’s image only reinforces the stereotype within Black girls that their primary value in society is to provide sexual pleasure. The sad part is Black women overwhelmingly agree with the low cut, cleavage showing fashion statement then, they pretend to be appalled when men approach them with sexual intentions.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pie001/ pie001

    Thank you Miss Problackfirst;
That’s exactly what all blacks should do, is seek out products and businesses that are black owned. And it’s sad that they make dolls that look like this black barbie. Children are smart and absorbant. It has to make you wonder what a little innocent child thinks when she see a doll that looks like this! We need to go back to the old school as far as not letting our children grow up too fast.
