Police in Philadelphia say a white officer who came to work with cornrows was ordered by a black superior to get a haircut because the braids violated department standards. The Philadelphia Daily News reported Monday that Officer Thomas Strain was put on desk duty this month because of the braids, even though the paper reported dozens of black officers wear cornrows.

Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore says Strain’s boss told the officer to cut his hair to look more “professional.”

Vanore says officers’ hats must fit “in a military manner” over their hair, and that Strain’s hat did not. Strain got a haircut; he declined comment to the paper.

Vanore recalled only one black officer with braids in the past several years. He says that officer also was told to get a haircut.

I wonder if Rush will call this reverse discrimination..,

Msg to NewsOne…There are a lot of interesting things going on in the world so there is no real need for you to be constantly supplying these stupid stories!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/2daTopnonStop/ 2daTopnonStop

They look good~ but if the department has a dress code than follow it~

what does race have to do w/ it?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/2good2bsingle/ 2good2bsingle

@ 2DaTopNonStop.. It’s NOT just a ‘Dress Code’ problem!! There are Black Cops at the very same Police Dept. wearing that hair style!! They (the Black Officers) are ALLOWED to wear them!! The Police superior over the White Cop demanded that HE remove HIS Cornrows!! THAT’S where the problem came in!! @ _A_.. YES! This MAY just be referred to as ‘Reverse Racism’ because it IS a REVERSE of traditional Racism! Racism is a BAD THING no matter WHO upholds it against WHO!! It really trips me out the way OUR people get so worked up over Racism against US, but then turn right around and get worked up over White people’s responses to US displaying Racial Tension towards THEM! ;-)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Truth3244/ Truth3244

To clarify – there is no reverse racism! The term in itself is a contridiction. By calling any action reverse racism you are saying that a racist action(s) didn’t happen. This is racism pure and simple. The only difference is a member of the minority ethnic group (Black) is being discriminatory to a member of the majority ethnic group (White). It’s still racism and is still disgusting to say the least.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

@2good2bsingle and Truth3244, my comment about reverse discrimination was a joke, that’s why I threw Rush (limbaugh) in there, I can see him taking the discussion in that direction. THIS IS HARDLY racism and 2good2bsingle, you need to get a clearer definition and better understanding of what racism is, if you think this foolishness falls into that category!

Seriously how the hell is this even a story? Doesn’t it say he told a black dude to cut his braids also, and if they are supposed to be based on a military haircut you cannot have braids. You guys need to find better sories for real

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blkpuddn/ blkpuddn

EVEN THO MOST CRACKERS MAKE ME SICK…I WILL SAY IF THEY ALLOW OTHER PPL WHETHER BLK OR NOT TO WEAR CORNROWS THEN IT’S ONLY RIGHT TO ALLOW THIS MAN TO WEAR HIS. LOL THEY SAY IMMITATION IS THE SINCERIST FORM OF FLATTERY. I DON’T THINK IT’S PROFESSIONAL FOR ANY POLICE TO WEAR CORNROWS…CLOSE CUT, CLOSE SHAVE…SHOULD BE MANDATORY!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sexy_man_mixed/ sexy_man_mixed

    Thank you Truth3244.
I can’t stand the idiotic term called “reverse racism”.
It suggests that standard racism is when the offender is White and the victim, or discriminated subject is Black.

Racism, is racism. Forward, backward, all directions.
Racism from a Black person to a White person is a “reverse” of nothing!
The whole stupid phrase “reverse racism” also suggests that Blacks as a race are the standard victim of racial discrimination, thus needing to put a special title on the brand of racism; when it is inflicted from a Black to a White person.
That propagates the notion of Blacks being weak and victimized, as opposed to the ever-growing, strengthening force that the Black community has become, and is ever-evolving into; within the U.S. and abroad.
So to answer the topic’s original question: No, this is not reverse racism.Because reverse racism does not exist.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sylkiifeather/ sylkiifeather

again…another story that is sure to divide blacks yet again over some whitey…who cares first of all when ONE lil bad thing happens to “them” compared to what blacks go through on a daily. plus, this isnt even racism because the article stated that a black guy was also told to cut his braids. what is the point of puttin up an article that is supposed to be about racism and then providing evidence within that article that shows that it wasnt even racism lol.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/COFDOG/ COFDOG

This is reverse racism. If you allow the black officers to wear cornrows u must allow all male officers the same opportunity. And to Lifeiswutumakit you are no better than the KKK when you make statements like, “Stupid f*ckin’ cracker”. See people that make statements like that BLACK or WHITE add fuel to a fire that has needed to be put out. Please don’t get it twisted we all have some sense of racism in us, it’s called pride for or own, but to make negative statements against another race or your own for that manner (MY NI@@A) it is very degrading and should not be used at all.

okay….firstly….WHAT IN THE HELL IS REVERSE RACISM??? there is no such thing….racism is racism is racism!! which means “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.” and point is…wtf did this have to do with racism…or REVERSE racism as the author of this article put it…Sorry..but the title makes no sense what-so-ever.. Now! with that said….what ever his superior’s intent was, as far as telling him to get rid of the braids really doesnt matter, because as a police officer you’re suppose to dress a certain way, just like in the military..MEN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR BRAIDS!!! ITS NOT PROFESSIONAL!! its as simple as that..im all for being on the objective point of view of things…but damn…please pick your battles and pick them wisely!! this article, honestly should not have even hit the ink jets this morning! I would like to speak to whoever is this cats boss…

@SoularFlarez: AGREED! “VIOLATED DEPARTMENT STANDARDS” KEY WORDS PPL!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jus-2_chill/ jus-2_chill

first of all, should’nt no grown man over 30 (if he is over 30) be trying to rocks some damn cornrows. grow up! unless a man over thirty is wearing braids for a practical reason like for scalp stimulation or to keep hair growing and stuff of that nature but to be rocking them for fashion, hell no. secondly, if a certain level of cultural freedom is allowed on the job then understand that cornrows belong to all races. we are different, but evrything about us aint that damn different. personally, i am a racist, but under certain circ**stances and for different reasons, but i am not a hater and i will become an extremist if the situation demands for me to be that way. being a policeman is one of the jobs where everyone is suppose to be uniform with eachother. i don’t think there should be room for cultural freedom on the police force because the police are suppose to be without favor for anyone. they are suppose to be a separate entity with their own law enforcing culture and since everyone wants our country to be this big ass melting pot of people, the police have to stand out. so if one is going to have braids, they all should. they all wear the same uniforms drive the same color cars, etc. but i expect this because police are out of order anyway. stuff like this let you know.

Yeah unless they undercover or vice all cops have to maintain certain standards. This is only good for comedic value but this isn’t any worthy news at all. Newsone needs to hire some new blood cause this aint no real news.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Agility/ Agility

This is not a story. Most jobs these days have some kind of standard for appearance; being a cop is not an exception. You don’t get to just do whatever you want.

I don’t automatically hold anything against people with cornrows, but just like I wouldn’t expect an officer to be sagging his trousers or wearing a fitted (unless he was uc), I wouldn’t expect to see him in cornrows, either. I live in NYC and see unprofessional looking cops all the time – because it seems they will hire any kid off the street these days and give him or her a badge and a gun – and it’s kind of sad. All officers who do their job honestly and legally deserve respect, but looking like a hoodlum doesn’t do much to inspire it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sexysofia23/ sexysofia23

I feel that it wasn’t fair that Strain Had to cut his hair. I think his superior officer is full of Bulls**t because Obomma is in Office Doesn’t make it right to treat someone of another race with disrespect cause if that was the case, Mexicans should cut their hair too for their profession.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Fuller219/ Fuller219

first off.we have to figure out why on one day, did this officer come into work with cornrows?.(was it to be funny or is that just “his style”)….but either way to put this article out is f**king stupid and a waist of valuable news…….Y?
why would you care for a crying white male who’s calling reverse racist?.(a *white or black* superior tells a *white or black* officer to cut your hair because of ‘department standards.’)…your superior is saying “your not about to come in my domain and break codes.(not racist just strict and honors his job)
2nd. the superior(black, don’t forget),responded to this wimpy ass conflict by saying he recalled only one officer with braids in the past several years. He says that officer also was told to get a haircut….(hmmm guess what… that one officer in those past years was a ..black officer)..

THIS IS NO STORY,just some stupid ass dude *white or black, dosent matter* showing off his ignorance..how the f**k something like this pop up on BP…Give us some real f**king stories to discuss!!! :) whats popn ladies ;)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/babytonnie/ babytonnie

racism? This sounds to me like a professional matter. Who goes to work in corn rows? How many police officers do we know of black or otherwise go to work in corn rows. Whoever is trying to dig for racism in this issue needs to give it a rest. There is nothing that points to racism in this situation except for the little fact that the superior officer was black.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/brandip77/ brandip77

What’s with the term “reverse racism?” Racism is racism, no matter what race commits it.

On that note, there is nothing racist about him having to cut his cornrows. White or black, if the rules require a certain hairstyle or hair cut, he needs to abide.

This article is a waste of valuable news space. There are real relevant issues to the African American community that need airing.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/brandip77/ brandip77

Plus, I’m not a fan of when white people wear their hair in braids or cornrows. I would laugh at a white dude I saw with cornrows.

Well whatever……no racism there I don’t think. If it is policy that you can’t have cornrows then sorry buddy- either get a haircut or a new job. So i think he did the right thang to get a haircut. He too old for cornrows anyway.

    BrandiP77,

I completely agree. This article is the type of non-news fluff that appeals to those who do not want the real issues dealt with. It is obtuse to say the least. A police (or military) regulation is just that. If it is ENFORCED differently for different races, then that is another story. However, this is just a matter of someone too bored or too disdainful of the average Newsone readership to provide us with actual fodder for thought, and discussion. It now becomes the very presence of the article that becomes the focal point for the depth and breadth of inanity that permeates our “Black News Culture”

it aint racism-white people have been copying us for years. regardless of if its policy or not. besides, racism is about power and what power do black people have except for what whites allow us to have. white people have had the power ever since they stole this land from the indians and formed a racist system of government in the so called name of christianity (how God-like is that?) that excluded everyone that didnt look like them and forced another race of people into the most inhumane form of forced labor in the history of the world? if the commanding or superior officer that told the other officer to cut his cornrows was white-their would be no discussion about this issue. black people cant have nothing for themselves unlike others-everything we get they gotta get in on it, steal it or we let them dominate whats ours culturally or by right. its not about hate or being seperate but damn-cant black folks have something for ourselves without white people involved?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/aladyofclass/ aladyofclass

I didn’t think there was a thing called reversed racism. Racism is racism no matter who it’s coming from. I can understand them tellin him he can’t wear his hair that way because it doesn’t look professional, but I mean come on people. It’s just jealousy. Get over it and let the man be. Who is he hurting by having them? Hell, he probably paid a black female to get them done. Support black business! it’s not that serious. Its a hairstyle.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GaThickGurl2006/ GaThickGurl2006

This is so funny, as soon as a black man is superior its an issue that he cant tell his own officer (Forget about the fact that he’s white!!!) to take his braids out. I totally agree with the superior because that is not professional, never have I seen a black or white police officer have braids nor locs in their head, and for someone to say that black police officers wear cornrows all the time…. That’s a bunch of crap…. This is no where near racist. The next thing that’s going to come up is a black man tells a white women to shut up, is that going to be racist too. Everything is an racist issue to everyone and that is ridiculous. Ya’ll just need to get a life.

Uniformed is Uniformed. Black or white. You are in a professional setting and should look the part. Granted the corn rows allowed the hat to fit on the head. But the only time corn rows should be allowed is if the officer is serving in an undercover role. You are in the public eye everyday and should not do anything to draw any attention to you as a civil servant. but that is just my opinion as someone who has worked both in law enforcement and serving in the military.

I have worked in the Public Safety Field for over 20 years. I now wear locks, but I did have to battle with my Safety Director over this very issue…….. I prevailed. Police Dept’s use the Military Dress Code as a model when It comes to hair stlye and length but there are ways around it. Most policies will state that the hair must not extend below the shirt collar or the middle of the ear but when it comes to female officers this policy doesnt seem to be enforced so there we have a double standard which is against the law, furthemore most policyies address length and bulk so as long as your hair is above the collar and middle ear your protected from most police dept’s dress code policies. He should have challenged his Lt.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sweetwilly41/ sweetwilly41

I come here many times and read the comments on various issues and i recall reading one blogger comment that this site is own by a white dude(person). Whether thats true of not there is nothing uplifting about most of the stories on here. I like interacting with my Black people and i have a love all people but comfort is comfort.

The stories on here are all demeaning to people of African descent and is aimed at maintain the metal imprisonment. How much do we gain from reading on this site that Police beat black male? To me this type of reporting sets off a chain reaction that seeks to imprison us more in the hatred of the Police and white people. I would assume that after three weeks of having these kinds of reporting on this site that BP would have formed a support group to address these injustices against black men and would have been one of the leading voices on this issue.

Another issue is how blacks stars are being protrayed? 90% of the times they only make the news in a negative way and this is not uplifting at all for the younger people you join this social networking site.

Race, racial, racism, light skin – dark skin are all hot topics on this site thats seek to play on the fears and memories of black people. This in itself should be a crime.

The many profiles i have browse since i have been a member of this site does not in anyway reflect the crap i see as reporting by this site’s editor. Most people, i speak for women here, have some college work, associate, bachelors, masters degree and i will assume lot of brothers do too. So we are not a dunce bunch yet we allow the owner of this site to play on our emotions.

I am Guyanese – West Indian and like all black people especially those of us who are direct decendants of enslaved Africans know we have a proud history second to none. We have built a brand new culture thats includes food, art, music, dance ( Yeah there is a new one every month), religion, music instruments, language, fashion (we dress different to every other), etc. Many has profited off of our creativity but thats life there should be no hate in that.

Part of my family is from a village on the coast of Guyana called Buxton. This village was bought by free slaves like many through the reach of Guyana. They did this not by tearing each other down, not by hating others but by coming together to fight a system and to leave a place for future generations. The many slave revolts, rebellions, passive resistance(We practise this 300 years before Ghandi) in The Caribbean (I don’t know African American history that much) are a testament to our many struggles. We need to stop allowing ourselvesf to be manipulated by others as it is with the owner of this site. We need to demand more from, not only from our leaders, but from everyone of us. Ask your hip-hop stars to conduct themselves in an uplifting manner; you can practise your art and you can also set a good example.

As i conclude i think this story is a none issue and only seeks to raise or maintain the tensions between whites and blacks. As far as i am concern if it is policy then he should cut his hair and it has nothing to do with racism or discrimination. However, I think if this is policy it is a stupid one. The White dude looks cool with cornrow thats that. I see White Rasta, Asian Rasta, Indian Ratsa and it always puzzle me as West Indian if there no Exactly what Rastafarian means but then again not every dread is a Rasta. Smile

Word of caution to my white peeps, stop using the phrase “reverse racism” because you are actually saying first and foremost that you are a racist bunch of people by nature. Racism is Racism and nothing more. There is no forward or reverse racism. The person who coin that phrase is a dunce.

    Peace.

Could the Web Administrator of this site please work on your Pattern Matching codes/script. You can’t just match “A”S”S” because it will mess up words like A”S”Sume by replacing it with *. So a better match would be to look for white spaces before and after the word then sensor it or something like that or more complex. But what you have there is sloppy programming. However, The sad fact is this story is so Weak I almost didn’t want to comment on it But, when I read your response sylkiifeather… I felt that totally… Yet, My Thing is this though… When will We as “Black People” accept the fact that we are what every one else wants to be… We influence every single aspect of The worlds daily lives… Be it from the way people dress to the way they talk, Even how they get up and go about their day… They refuse to admit to this… And will deny it to death if questioned on it… Yet, if you Sit back… Be Quite… “Watch” & “Listen” to whats going on out here… You’ll see just how much of us is in Them.

i didnt want to comment at first either because i felt that the story kind of contradicted itself. i didnt see the racism in this in the first place. but even if it was racism, what am i supposed to do feel sorry, when this happens to blacks all the time. but what you say is true, that we do influence alot of what goes on in the world today. but someone one time on another site (italianmami to give credit lol) stated that blacks, particularly black women, get alot of influence from whites too. how black women wear weaves for example. i dont know, just something to throw out there, even though i agree with you.

but someone else on another story (cant remember the name to give credit) said that blacks and other ethnic groups cannot be racist. because to be racist means you hate someone specifically for the color of their skin. and black people cant be racist because if a black person dislikes a white person, they have a legitimate reason for not liking them, other than skin color. for example, because of past and present injustices around the world. i kind of see the point in what that person was saying, but im wondering what other people may think of that idea….

I don’t see the problem here. If the standard dress code says that the hat has to fit in a military fashion, this dude couldn’t go find a better hat? Perhaps this was an instance of racism(not reverse racism that so many people say, but makes no sense). Even if it were, the white officer found himself in the same predicament a black officer would have–either being forced to prove he was discriminated against or being labeled as being too stupid to buy a hat that would have fitted. I for one applaud the guy for having the effort and balls to wear a hair style that many blacks are persecuted for wearing. Maybe if more whites strated wearing more cornrows and dread locks, they would limit their use of racial epithets such as mop head, because they would be criticizing themselves.

I’m going to tell you like this. I don’t care at all who told who what! I can’t stand cops. Let pigs deal with pig stuff. I just want them to stop beating us and pulling us over for stupid stuff and asking us if the car is ours. I can’t stand cops and black cop is and oxymoron.

Since when did a hair style disrupt or stopped a person from doing their job? Yeah i can agree some white folks don’t look good in braids but if he is doing his job then he is doing his job.

BLAH BLAH BLAH. PIGS ARE PIGS. SWINE IS SWINE. BUT IT IS MESSED UP. LET THE MAN LOOK A FOOL IF HE WANTS TO….

I myself read the articles posted by this site. I find them to be very informing. Those braids look damn good on this officer. I seen some black dudes on look pitiful, and nasty. Times have changed. I realize that the officer has a code of dress, but I also know that officers have to be able to keep up with times. They don’t have to be superior looking to be an officer and wear cornrows. I applaud him. What about the under cover officer who dress like a dumb bum, and drug dealer and he’s really not. What about the young ladies and old particular black women who “are” wearing the straigt hair styles that white women have always worn. Many of the styles that we see on our black movie stars are styles that white women have worn down thru the years. Now all women are wearing the styles, star and everyday people. Hair styles don’t belong to any race or set of people. If you got hair on your head you are free to do whatever you want to with that hair, as long as it does not endanger a person(s). He’s not the first white person I have seen with cornrows. Further more he doesn’t look like a fool. The police department need to concentrate on getting some of the drug dealers, murders, missing people, drunks, molesters, protecting our children, protecting the elderly, and the many other visible crimes that are plauging our country and community. Maybe they should arrest those ugly, pants dragging, butt showing young men, who are trying to be as ugly as they can, and are wearing ugly, out of order cornrows. As long as he keeps his hairstyle neat and clean I see nothing wrong with his cornrow.
To the person who hates all cops and police: I hope you see how much crime is going on in our country with police. What do you think it would be like if there were no police. Looks like you missed your calling. Should have been a police but messed up.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackrg32/ blackrg32

To everyone: We are not born racist. When God made us he made us perfect, make no mistake. That something we learn from time born and forward. And yes there are a lot of blacks who hates whites and everyone else. This is learned behavior. Behavior we are taught. We have promoted love for one another black, white, green, or yellow instead of hate, this country would excell into another “century” fast. We hold our ownselves back with all this mess. We need to show our governments that we are a ‘UNITED PEOPLE”.

This has nothing to do with with race. Im US Army retired. Cornrolls in a military uniform or Para military uniform such as the police is out of regulations and a disgrace to the uniform. Wanna wear cornrolls get off the force. We once had a soldier that claims that he didnt understand the regs and he came to the unit with cornrolls, we informed him he was out of uniform and to get a haircut, and yes he was black. I saw a cop in cornrolls and he really looked unprofessional. Its all about being professional. Try going to a job interview with a law firm with tatoos all over your face and see if you get the job.

IM SORRY BUT BLACK OR WHITE,IF I GET PULLED OVER BY A COP WITH CORNROWS, IM PULLING OFF!!! WHITE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TRYING THEIR ASSES OFF TO PULL THE RACE CARD LATELY, I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE SEEN A COP WEAR HIS UNIFORM WITH CORNROWS. THE SUPERVISOR WAS RIGHT TO TELL HIS DUMBASS TO GET RID OF THEM.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DAMIEN_SIX/ DAMIEN_SIX

whoever did his hair got skill tho you know white biys got thin hair.lol but seriously it’s notta race issue its an ethics issue if a cop is indercover thats one thing, but in uniform you have 2 be clean shaven and have a proper haircut if a cop pulled you over in braids or a mohawk would you take them seriously? regulations are regulations and vanilla ice shoulda known that before he came 2 work lookin like malibus most wanted. Its not reverse racism thats probly what he wanted people 2 think when he knew hed be told 2 get it cut.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LastManStandingTall/ LastManStandingTall

Cornrows are tacky, whether you are black or white. It’s a jailhouse hairstyle, and I can’t take anybody with hair like that seriously, especially a wigger cop. He should stop trying to fit in with the black race, particularly the low-end. Cut it off or go be in a hip-hop video (LOL).

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/xplosivewordzz/ xplosivewordzz

Cornrolls have been around longer than jails. They may not be for you, but they also aren’t a representation of “low-end” blacks. My family has rocked cornrolls for generations and we are far from “low-end”. The fact that you would have the audacity to state that anyone that wears cornrolls are “low-end” tells me that you have a few self-esteem issues that you need to resolve. Anyone that allows such stupidity to come out of their mouths is someone that I can’t take seriously.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/100th_Monkey/ 100th_Monkey

Cornrows look ridiculous. They looked ridiculous in the 70′s and 80′s, they looked ridiculous on Snoop, ridiculous on my cousin Peanut, they look ridiculous on white girls, they look ridiculous on black girls. They look ridiculous on Asian people. I’ve even seen them on Latin people and guess what? They still look ridiculous! Look at the photo once more of this cop, look at his scalp – he looks damn ridiculous! Cornrows might look cute on a little 3 year old black boy but then again, even that is ridiculous! I’m not taking any professional adult seriously if they appear before me with cornrows. How would like to go to court facing time and your attorney representing you shows up in cornrows? Would ya’ll like that? How about you hop on a flight from New York to Denver and on your way to your seat 7E, you look back and happen to glance in the c**kpit and your pilot is sitting there with cornrows? It’s ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as this topic. This is insanity!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blackrocksista/ blackrocksista

Wow, the ignorance on here would be amusing if it weren’t so sad. It’s obvious that way too many black people are unaware that cornrows predate jailhouses and rappers by CENTURIES and are still word PROUDLY by many in the African diaspora. I work in a very large and professional law firm and several of the attorneys and not a few of the black support staff wear their hair natural–including cornrows and they always look neat. Do your homework–even the Ancient Egyptians wore braids and cornrows and considered them an art form. I will NEVER chemically-straighten my hair in order to fit some Eurocentric standard of beauty.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/100th_Monkey/ 100th_Monkey

    Now this is interesting!

I don’t think anyone (including myself) is debating the historical significance of cornrows. I, personally know it’s rich history dating back to Egyptian culture (pre-Hyksos dynastic period), ancient Sumeria, Babylonian hair attire, as well as the Pueblo Americans Indians in which the term originated, actually known as, “Pelo Maze.” I can’t speak for anyone else in here but I’m debating two things, 1. It’s cultural significance and ethnic interpretation (simulation) by that of an Aryan individual, and 2. It’s general lack of practical use in today’s “corporate” society (and we can debate that later) regardless of it’s historical context!

So I, for one sista, am not ignorant . . . perhaps a bit unforgiving at times of silliness (i.e. a white cop wearing cornrows to simulate in a culture that would otherwise remain foreign to him if it had not been for ethnic assimilation.) It’s also safe to say that anyone wearing cornrows today would care less of it’s historical significance, it’s art, it’s insinuation of past royalty and glory or any other attempt at self empowerment based on what we, “were” instead of what we ARE!

I applaud you for not falling into the programming of Eurocentricm (in which there is no such thing), beauty standards. However, some of us are allowed to see cornrows as non-conducive, without being labeled as, “ignorant.” Some of us act as though we do not conform to the “Euro” society simply because we choose to not relax our hair, yet other attributes about us (style of dress, possession of various goods and items) says otherwise. You can’t pick and choose what you want to be Eurocentric and Afrocentric about, not while pointing the finger at others that is.

We have to stop thinking that just because something has it’s roots in Africa, that it should be adopted by us. There are many things in Africa that should not be adopted by us (polygamy in some tribes, nakedness, cannibalism, incest, etc.) I love it when people try to convince me that I’m not “true” or “real” or “Afrocentric” because I choose not to adopt something from the motherland. That doesn’t make you blacker sister. It just makes you and picker and chooser.

to my black brother 100th_Monkey on your comment i did wirte a drawn out response but i had diffculties in saving it a person choice to represent theirself is entirely upto them but to inject your comment is ridiculous when you choose to call yourself 100th_Monkey its a person right to express their individual thought upon themselves yes in some aspects of life it may not be acceptable but in other who care we crossed many bridges just in the recent half century and some of our own people tear us down more than other races we walk with our noses up high instead of helping but ima end it on this like it was said its a dumb article anyway complete waste of time who cares

If not, well . . . have a good night my brother.
