Black Farmers Win $1.25 Billion In Discrimination Suit

WASHINGTON – Thousands of black farmers who were discriminated against by the U.S. Agriculture Department will be eligible to receive $1.25 billion in a settlement, the government said on Thursday.

The settlement of the case, known as Pigford II, is contingent on Congress approving $1.15 billion for the farmers, in addition to $100 million already provided in the Farm Bill.

For decades, black farmers said they were unjustly being denied farm loans or subjected to longer waits for loan approval because of racism, and accused the USDA of not responding to their complaints.

The original Pigford lawsuit, named after North Carolina farmer Timothy Pigford, was filed against the USDA in 1997, and settled two years later when the government compensated black farmers left out of USDA loan and assistance programs.

    This case has indeed been going on for years… all the big people from the Justice Department defended this case. Loads of discovery and loads of black farmers were discriminated while white farmers were getting major loans to finance their operations. I’m lovin’ it! Take that Federal Programs Branch!

    Before corks are popped remember, the devil is in the details. I would urge people to follow up on this story (on your own of course, because BP won’t do it for you) at a later date to see how things really turn out. Cases such as these, seem to always have a way of having some loophole or ridiculous string attached, that turn these “wins” into empty victories.

    Maybe this will open the doors to what is owed to we Native Americans……Bravo!!!!! Unfortunately some of the farmers will be taking the $12,00 to $50,000 quick payment plus tax deductions instead of the $250,000 and more payment which will take longer tally because of the complexity of the suit………….

    It’s about time the Black Farmers got a settlement agreement. I’m sure some have died waiting. The avg. white farmer has received hundreds to a million in assistance in comparison to the avg. black farmer who only received an average of $200.

    The USDA waited long enough so enough black farmers would die off so there would be less to pay off. The Govt does military veterans and their families THE SAME EXACT WAY!!!EXACTLY WHEN ARE THE FARMERS AND THEIR SURVIVORS GOING TO START SEEING THEIR PAYMENTS? (IF the survivors even think about getting paid, duh). And we’re supposed to trust them with our meats? WE need to check what’s going through them into our grocery stores!
    But what do I know?
