This is a perfect example for Black entrepreneurs (entertainers, athletes, politicians) to come together and pool (no pun intended) their money and open up swimming pool facilities so our youth will not have to be dehumanized by such actions like that of this so-called “private” swim club that offers “open” memberships.

It is time for America, for Black America, the descendants of slaves here in the US to stand up once again and make our voices heard. It is time for us to claim our own place in history and understand that we are a unique people and that we are tired of people lumping any person with dark skin together and that we as the descendants of the people responsible for building this country will no longer be a silent minority or be bullied. It is time for us to stand up and assert ourselves and the rights our people have fought so hard to earn do not get lost. Our place in history needs to be accentuated with just as many small successes as well as great deeds. What we do not need is to become the catch all excuse or the silly typical examples of what not to be. As it was so many years ago education is still a primary key to the success of us as a people. There are only so many places for sports stars and only so many will be famous musicians but all of us can be educated.

After reading so many of theses comments I have to say that it doesn’t matter if you are up north, south, midwest, east or west coast, racism still exists. It is very unforunate and sad that it continues at this day and age but it does. It will never go away, no matter how much progress we as a people have made, there is still the underlying fact the some not all believe they are a more superior race. Living in the midwest I, myself and my son experience this on a day to day basis. I teach my child to treat everyone with respect no matter the color of their skin. Life is to short and not promised to any one. There is no need for racism when you never know the race of the person that might save your life.

Someone didn’t do their advance work properly to know that these kids in these numbers were not going to be received well. I agree with a lot of the other posters that they should have frequented a YMCA, Boys and Girls Club or other pool closer to home where they and their money would have been appreciated.

I would like to explain the title of my comment. When this pool was being built there were probaly the most minorities you have ever seen on the jobsite in the middle of the summer time giving their blood, sweat, and heart to the ideal that this place was just another place kids and adults alike can come relax and cool down on a hot day. More than likely our brother and sisters from the latin background helped build this place. It has to be a beautiful place because we minorities (latin, african-american, etc.) work hard and don’t slack. We can’t afford to. The owner of the contracting company that hires cheap labor knew the whole deal. You have to know because you have meetings to finalize plans and sketches before you even build a road to get to the site. Irony is that certain people love our hard work ethic, our strength, and our passion. Irony is also evil because you will hire a group of people with a smile on your face and knife clutched in your hand behind your back. Irony is that you knew you didn’t want us there but was more than willing to have us build it GRAND for you. Sad thing is that as soon as the complex was built there was joy. The minority workers that built it thought it was because of another masterpiece produced by strong hands. But it was a feeling of joy that the first thing they built before they even built the complex was a fence. What really still shocks me is the evil that people have, on the surface or below. The all of a sudden change of heart doesn’t come because these children are sincerely being accepted and embraced, it comes from the fear of such a massive lawsuit settlement that “The Valley Swim Club” can’t afford (maybe they should have just taken the $1900). I agree..There are alot of african-americans out there who think white is better. I don’t look at skin color. I think all people are beautiful, but as a business owner I see the hatred of my (black) customers once they find out the owner is black and its me. This pool incident is a reminder that ignorance is at your front door. I hope they decide to go with the other facilities that offer the swim programs. Let GOD deal with them. GOD will be their vindicator. He’s already done it by having this incident become public. The publicity will allow the proper actions to be taken. And if not, I am sure there are some members that don’t agree with it and don’t want to be affiliated with the club any more. Their membership attendance will drop. I’m so very pissed off and everyone who hear’s about this should be too.We’re in the year 2009 and still dealing with racist attitudes?We need to start a movement anytime things like this happens everyone can afford sending in $1.00 to repesent those kids and send it to Ms. Alethea Wright, The Creative Steps Day Camp, to help build a bigger center plus swimming pool and park in their neighborhood.I’m sending my dollar to Mrs. Wright so I know exactly that it’s going straight for their use towards building their new center, pool and park.So I’m challenging everyone to do there part,represent these kids, do the same and show their power–show these kids some Love.This should have never happened not in the year of change with our newly elected African American President.And this is suppose to be the city of brotherly love.I don’t think so!

This is just appalling, I wouldn’t stand for something like this to happen in my community.

The enemy plans was to hurt those children, but God is turning it around, the tables will turn around. God said let the first be last and the last shall be first. I know that the lord is going to bless those children and the camp with something great maybe their own pool or more. Where Vally pool messed up is they are funded meaning your funds can stop, the children should not have to suffer because of the ignorance of these people. The white children probably would have continued to swim with no problem because children don’t see color. It’s the adults who are planting that seed of fear and hate.
Thats why it is important to teach your children about God and how to love themselves.
