I read an article the other day where an 18 year old had committed a DUI type crime. When I read that he was referred to as a ‘teen’ and tried in juvenile court, that told me something. But had he been described as an 18 year old ‘man’ and tried in adult court, that would have told me something else.

This is got to be the craziest story I ever read. How do you set someone on fire and then they get charged? Even if he did hit that punk it was in self defense. This is a horrible tragedy, they should definitely charge the culprits with some jailtime. What the GOP is afraid of is a judge that would balance the scale, leveling the playing field so that justice is real for that boy, for all of us.
In lieu of the Supreme Court confirmation of Justice Sotomayor cases such as this need to be exposed to the forefront.
In this climate it shouldn’t be difficult to find decent legal representation but only if this case gets more exposure.

On a personal level actually living in Missouri there is A LOT of Racism here. However, this is what I don’t understand how can setting someone on fire be an assault? Oh yea, unfortunately it appears that in the US, setting someone on fire which seems to happen often enough is charged as assault with intent (to harm or commit murder) unlike Canada where it is straight up attempted murder.

So while it technically fits the definition of attempted murder, prosecutors have leeway in deciding what to charge. If you look at the law, and not just in the US, all these charges have lots of room which is why someone can break into your house, fall and hurt himself and YOU get charged.
