I just sat down and listened to the entire news report on this and I could not move. I actually felt like crying. This young lady and her family needs help badly on this one. The KKK has already put their bid on it and this is trying to destroy this girls medical career before she can even get started with it. The prosecutor is a white man who is as crooked as the KKK in that town and he is bullying this woman into a confession about something that she did not do. I completely agree with “Where is the parking lot and in store tape?” No one has said anything about that. I am deeply saddened by this report. I am also praying for the family and this young lady intensely. This could happen to any one of us. Racism is still alive. I still can not believe they manhandled her like that. What did beating her head on a police squad car have anything to do with her “cursing” ?!???!!!???

I have to partially agree with 1divine_soul on this one..We need to stop being so loud, disrespectful and in cases “ghetto acting”..This type of behavior gives these cops the excuse to mishandle us and we know how it goes, as soon as they use words like belligerent and loud in reports, you are going to be automatically labeled guilty in the court of public opinion. The fact is, we have marched, protested, prayed in, sat in, for almost 60yrs against this behavior and it obviously isn’t working. The headline is inaccurate! Heather Ellis was loud and belligerent in the store, and that’s why she’s in trouble with the law. Cutting in line is not illegal alone. It was her reaction that got her azz caught with a case. She’s not facing 15 years for BEING a black woman. She’s facing prison time for ACTING like a NICCA…(LOL). I have seen all shades of people SAVE a space in line for their shopping partner and I, myself had no qualms about the person stepping in front of me. Make note that she was reported by an EMPLOYEE and not the other customers which we could conclude it was ok with same customers and trouble did not start until the manger incited the incident. As for the charges: Police always CONTRIVE added charges in order to justify their actions—in this case slamming her head against the car etc. If I were she, I too would not plea and would fight the charges—Now if they want to give her 15 years, that in and of itself is an injustice. All of this is just another form of rairoading Blacks/minorities because they are the ones who are least likely to afford quality representation. Apparently many of you are blind as to the injustice of the justice system and how there is an inequity in the application of the law, from the police on up to the judges.

When some little boys down in Jena got the fighting and were faced with injustice you were ready to back them. We all were men and women. I live near kennett and believe me this sounds about right. The police tried to arrest me for vagrancy cause I was walking to work without any ID. If my Aunt wasn’t a police officer I would have been in big trouble. I asked for his badge number and he threatened to run me in for resisting arrest. You can’t say amything to cop around here if you African American cause they can carry a grudge. I had to find another job because they started harrassing me everytime I walked to work and they would pull over any car they saw me in going to work. They even walked up on me at work and tried to say I was trespassing cause I was waiting on my ride out of uniform. I once lived in Indiana and watched the KKK have a parade but the racism down hear in the boothill of Missouri is beyond anything I have ever expercienced in my life. By the way there are no black radio stations for hundreds of miles and I live about 15 minutes away from kennett and this story didn’t even appear in our local papers. My heart goes out to her and my prayers will be with her. This is definitely not an issue about a time and a place to shut your mouth. When did freedom of speech say anything to Americans about doing that. The young lady was not actually being verbally abusive as much as she was placed in an uncompromising situation, whereby her form of speech (cursing),just as many of us often do when we are so afraid and disoriented, can’t find the words to say something using a “Pretty” vocabulary. There are quite a lot of bad police officers in our society today. Unfortunately for this young black woman, she was introduced to him by the beating he did to her by means of assault to her. This officer of the law, whom we as citizens put our trust and faith in to serve our communities and to protect us, is the main ones that are hurting us right in our own back doors. What did this young lady have to do exactly? Kiss his feet and talk softly and sexily to this white officer to convince him to listen to him? To respect him? To believe her version of the story? As simple as I can put it on the topic of “just” the officer issue in this story, He definitely qualifies for anger management and a strong control issue meltdown assessment before he is put off of the police force. This officer is the seed that has been planted a particularly bad seed in representation for not only police but also to that city overall. Wake up America. The police have charged people with resisiting arrest in the local area for crying and one guy was actually charged with resisiting and assult on an officer while having a seizure which he is currently suing for.
For the person who made the comment that African americans are more likely to have these kinds of problems with the authorities. This is true but the way the police handle it is diffrent with african americans because they know they are more likely to get away with treating blacks abusively. My personal experience has shown me that. My best friend cursed an officer out, refused to show him the items in her bag, and knocked his hand down when he attempted to take her bag from her shoulder but I am sure that her platinum blonde hair, blue eyes, and lily white skin didn’t have nothing to do with the fact that he let her go with a warning about her attitude. GET REAL. Just because there is a black president don’t mean that rascim is not alive and kicking. There is even a study that show that Black women stress about race and racism so much that it puts them in danger of having low birth wieght and premature babies even among middle class educated women with excellent healthcare before after and during pregnancy. In the end, Heather Ellis received a conviction on her criminal record. She should’ve filed a lawsuit and sued the city’s pants off. Police officers have to be policed themselves. If the city won’t do it, the community has to do it.

We had a case in Des Moines involving a young woman, her boyfriend and a fracas outside a nightclub. The woman just watched her boyfriend (at the time) get hit with a nightstick. He went into a seizure inside the paddywagon. She came to my side and gave me information on what happened. She asked for my pen. I gave it to her. She wrote down her phone number because she needed a witness. An officer grabbed her wrist, dropping the pen, and said that she assaulted him. She was thrown against the wall and handcuffed.

Two months later, I testified in court to what I saw. Basically, all the charges were dropped.

The young lady, according to the article states that her little cousin was already in the line..she came from another line to join him because he was actually up to the register to have the items checked out. I believe we should respect authority, however, this isn’t Stalinist Russia or Nazi Germany, yet. Once authority crosses the line, people have a right to defend themselves. As I understand this article, and the fact that the state wants to drop all the charges by disturbing the peace which means the assaulting a police officer probably didn’t happen, or they would have kept the resisting arrest, the cops crossed the line the second they put their hands on a citizen. It reminds me of Dr. Gates. These cops hate when their authority is challenged in word, and they proceed to use force because often the words that are being said can’t be argued. How much less likely are authorities to sit back and debate this situations with a citizen in a country with a history of these officers dawning the sheets and pulling out the rope? What remains interesting about this case is two things, one the cops didn’t offer up charges, the State did which means after the heat of the moment an “objective” third party not in the situation said I want 20% of her life. The second thing that really stands out here is the daughter’s head being smashed repeatedly against a window. What does it take to cuff a woman and place her in the back of a car? Nothing. “Smashing” her head against a window was punitive for her “disrespect” for the badge. What is so hard for these “peace officers” to understand, they get no respect because they bash womens’ heads into windows? They get no respect because the side of the cars say service and protect while historically they are the first to lynch a brother. Police officers have work to do to EARN the respect of the people they are supposed to be protecting because their track record has only earned them distrust and disrespect.

These types of stories happen everyday and are becoming more increasingly prevalent. We need an Attorney General and a President with backbone to make a change. Someone needs to go through all the cases with the key tags “resisting arrest” and “assault on a peace officer”, these tags are usually for bulls**t cases. We bypassed an opportunity for exposure and dialogue of racist cop actions when Professor Gates was arrested in his home. This couldve been a time for change and a landmark case/victory. Instead we had a “teacheable moment” (Beer at the whitehouse and a cover up/swept under the rug situation. One day the black voice will not be silent. One day someone in power will really weild their power to make change. Until that time we are going to continue to go to court over racist bulls**t situations in which we are always labeled loud. belligerent and obstructive. When most of the time we do nothing wrong except fail to yield to any actions of white people. I have had a similiar experience which ended up with pleas and deals and me paying money for nothing. I just pray that one day we will have someone in a position of power to have the courage to say “enough” and take a real stand. The Department of Justice should go back and review these keytag cases in every state. They will be suprised at the number of BS cases and the extraordinary waste of tax dollars used to jail, imprison (control) persons of color. Its a damn shame to send someone to jail or prison for alleged “cutting line” at a walmart. We need leadership and I am sorry to say but we have no leadership. All too often black folks always jump straight to racism, the way this woman behaved was uncalled for. If you are in line at walmart you aren’t going to be happy if someone, regardless of race, jumps in line in front of you. We all got places to go and if you can’t wait in line they have self check out lanes…utilize them, that’s what they’re there for.

Racism isn’t going to fade away if we black folks practice racism as well. In any situation being the bigger, better person is the best bet. If she would have said she was wrong and moved to the rear of the line where she should have been initially, she wouldn’t have a story to tell. In my community,there were many questions raised sayin that he only went to prison because he was black.However, the measures that were taken for something as small as this is ridiculous, and there is no other word for it. To be completely honest, it is not even an extreme form of breaking. From reading, her cousin was already in line. True, its HER cousin and not her, but if she really wanted to pay for her stuff and leave she could have just given it to her cousin and technically she would not have been breaking. I shop all the time and there are plenty of times when wives and husbands part because something was forgotten while shopping, and they find their place back in line, its second nature. To further elaborate, there is no article that I have read that has said anything about the customer complaint, all eyes are focused on the associate. My thing is, your job description as an associate/ cashier is to ring the groceries not regulate the line. If someone breaks in line, it is not your place to tell them to move because that is not what you get paid for. “ghetto” is a term that is often referred to black people, and in some cases there are individuals who display such behavior. However, when you are accused to the extreme for something so petty, then the “GHETTO” as you say comes out!Put yourself into the position…what if your daughter niece sister brother came to break line in front of you because you had temporarily split and it caused such an upror???Just put yourself into the position is all I’m saying. Why do we insist on reinforcing ignorant and inappropriate behavior. This lady was clearly in the wrong and got what she deserved. However, we attempt to remove accountability from her by suggesting that this incident was motivated by racism as opposed to from ignorance.

What I find most disturbing is that in 2010 with all the enemies we have all over the world that the United States, it seems, is more divided now than I can remember and I am 51 years old. The danger of it now is it is hidden and suppressed until it is exhibited in such demeaning ways. The actions of a few is attributed to many. In my opinion if you have hate in this day and age it is a reflection of self hate. I have dislikes but at the end of the day I still pray for us all. We all need it.

MANY MANY of us will split lines in the grocery stores, in supermarkets, or whatever just to see which one moves the quickest. IT IS NOT CUTTING LINE. It is a way to affect our productivity and efficiency measures. LOL!

This story should not be shocking, although it is clearly frustrating, and illegal. There are several factors here that are directly related: 1) A black victim is usually victimized purely because the system (rogue cops who have clearance to abuse blacks, Walmart who abuse the poor all around the world, fellow customers who know that “beat up on blacks” is accepted in America. 2) The role played by a society that vilified Africa, thus anyone that closely resembles African nationals, is vilified in racist systems.

The question is: How long will it take Black/Brown people to wakeup to the fact that 99% of Black organizations, politicians and leaders that claim to be working for them are actually working with the system to keep them down !?!?!
